My Husband Tried to Murder Me for His Mistress Chapter 1

I was seven weeks pregnant when I found the messages.

Brendan was in the shower. The steam crept under the bathroom door, smelling like his sandalwood soap. His phone buzzed on the nightstand. Once. Then four times in a row.

I picked it up to silence it.

The screen stayed lit. The name on the banner was Daisy Diaz.

Daisy was the darling daughter of Diaz Enterprises, the conglomerate where I had worked for five years. She was Julian Diaz’s younger sister—pampered, fragile, and untouchable.

I unlocked the phone. His passcode was our anniversary.

The thread went back eight months. Pictures of hotel rooms. Plane tickets to Aspen. And then, a text sent at midnight:

*When are you going to tell her? I’m tired of hiding.*

Brendan’s reply came two minutes later:

*She suspects nothing. Don't worry, baby. She'll be handled soon.*

I sat on the edge of our bed. My hands were completely still. Inside my chest, something vital turned cold and died. I didn’t cry. I didn’t scream. I laid the phone back on the nightstand, angled exactly as he had left it, and walked into the kitchen.

I didn't get the chance to confront him.

At seven the next morning, I stepped onto the sidewalk outside our building. A black SUV slammed to a halt at the curb. Before I could turn, two men grabbed me. A heavy sack dropped over my head. Plastic zip-ties bit deep into my wrists. I was thrown onto the floorboards, an engine roaring in my ears.

When the hood was ripped away, the smell of damp concrete and rust filled my nose.

We were in an abandoned warehouse. Dust motes floated in the dim light. In front of me stood Julian Diaz.

Julian was my boss. The man who had scouted me out of nowhere and promoted me three times. He looked immaculate in a charcoal wool coat. He adjusted his cuffs, his face wearing the mild, polite sorrow he used when firing an executive.

"Julian," I rasped, my throat raw. "What is this?"

"A necessary adjustment," he said calmly. "Daisy loves Brendan. And whatever Daisy wants, Daisy gets."

My stomach lurched. "You know? You know about them?"

"I arranged their introduction, Elena," he said. He sighed, checking his watch. "You're a brilliant girl. Diligent. Capable. But you’re an inconvenience. Daisy’s health is frail, and she doesn't need a messy divorce scandal." He stepped closer, looking down at me with cold pity. "Don't take it personally. You were never supposed to be in this story."

He turned to his men. "Finish it cleanly."

Julian’s phone rang. He glanced at the display, frowned, and walked toward the far exit to answer it.

Two men remained. One held a crowbar. The other stood back near the rusted support pillars.

I looked at the second man.

A jagged scar crossed his jaw. His shoulders were slightly hunched.

Derek.

Five years ago, I spent every Saturday volunteering at a deaf outreach center in Queens. Derek Solis had been one of my regulars. He had lost his hearing at twelve. When other volunteers ignored him because his signs were jerky and rough, I sat with him for hours over stale coffee.

I shifted my hands behind my back, turning toward him. My wrists ached against the plastic ties, but my fingers moved.

*Derek.* I spelled out his name in American Sign Language.

His eyes widened. He gripped his belt.

*It's Elena,* I signed, keeping my face blank so the other man wouldn't notice. *Queens. Saturday mornings. Please. I am pregnant.*

Derek glanced at his partner, then at the open bay doors where Julian was talking. A muscle jumped in his jaw.

"Hey," Derek grunted, tapping his partner's arm. He pointed at the breaker box across the room, mimicking a flicker with his hands.

The other thug cursed. "Go check it, idiot."

Derek walked behind me. He knelt, pretending to check my ankles. In one swift motion, a pocket blade flicked out. He sliced the nylon ties between my wrists.

"Be fast," he whispered, his voice thick and rusted from disuse.

I didn't hesitate.

I grabbed a loose iron pipe off the floor and swung with everything I had. The heavy iron struck the back of the first thug's skull. He crumpled like wet cardboard.

Julian spun around by the entrance, his eyes wide. "What the hell—"

I lunged forward. Julian tried to run, but I slammed the heavy rolling fire door shut, dropping the rusted iron latch into place.

"Elena! Open this door!" he roared, pounding against the corrugated steel.

Behind the grate, high above him, the ancient construction scaffolding began to buckle under the sudden vibration.

A groan of twisting metal echoed through the warehouse.

Then came the crash.

Tons of steel pipes collapsed directly onto Julian. His shriek tore through the silence. A stack of industrial chemical drums tipped over, rupturing across the concrete floor. White, acrid fumes hissed up into the air.

Julian’s screams turned shrill, animalistic. "My eyes! My legs! God, my eyes!"

I didn't look back. I slipped out the side exit into the freezing New York rain.

My knuckles were bloody. My coat was torn. I stood on the wet curb, my hand resting protectively over my flat stomach.

A yellow cab pulled up. I slid into the back seat.

"Mount Sinai," I told the driver. My voice didn't shake.

Under the dim streetlights, I looked down at my left hand. The diamond ring Brendan had given me caught the yellow glare. I pulled it off. I didn't throw it. I just placed it quietly on the torn vinyl seat and left it there.

An hour later, I was in a hospital bed on the fifth floor.

I told the nurse I had tripped and fallen on the subway stairs. She checked the baby's heartbeat. Strong. Steady.

I lay back against the thin pillow, staring at the white ceiling tiles.

I didn't call the police. I didn't call Brendan.

Julian’s voice echoed in my head, over and over, cutting through the sterile hum of the room:

*You were never supposed to be in this story.*

I closed my eyes.

That wasn't an insult. It was a clue.
