My Mate Chose His Mistress Over Our Dying Daughter Chapter 1

Lakelyn's fourth seizure hit at 2:47 in the morning, her small body arching off the mattress like something was trying to pull her out of her own skin. I had her hand in both of mine, and I felt every convulsion travel up through her fingers into my wrist.

"Slow-acting wolfsbane," Elena said, not looking up from the readings on Lakelyn's pulse. "Sustained doses. Weeks, maybe longer." Her voice was flat, the way healers get flat when the truth is unbearable and has to be delivered anyway. "There's one option. A blood-bonded ritual. It draws on your life-force to burn the poison out of her."

I was already pushing up my sleeve. "Then start."

"Caroline, the cost—"

"Start, Elena."

She began chalking the circle. I pressed my thumb hard against the pulse point of my wrist, the way I always do when the ground under me stops feeling solid, and I watched my daughter breathe in short, wrong little pulls.

The door slammed open before Elena finished the second line.

Blake filled the frame, and behind him, Rayna, her face arranged in the particular calm she wears when she has already decided something and is simply waiting for the room to catch up. Blake's Alpha aura rolled down the corridor like a pressure front, thick enough to make the healer's supply jars rattle.

"Before this ritual proceeds," he said, in the voice he uses for pack law, not for a father standing over a dying child, "I need a signature. You relinquish your Luna bond-rights to Shadowvale's territory. Witnessed. Now."

"She's dying, Blake."

"Then sign quickly."

I stared at him. "There's no time for this."

"Make time."

He didn't move from the doorway. Rayna didn't move either. I turned to Elena, whose hands had gone still over the chalk. "Why do you need my signature for a ritual you should already be authorized to perform? Where is the moonpetal root? It stabilizes without the blood cost — why aren't we using it?"

Elena's eyes flicked to Blake, then away. I asked again, quieter, which is how I get when I already suspect the answer will end something in me.

"The reserve was requisitioned five days ago," Elena said. "On the Alpha's order. Sent to Shelby Henderson. For a scar. On her neck." A breath. "So his mark would take cleanly."

The corridor went silent enough that I could hear Lakelyn's uneven breath through the open door behind me.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. I stood there for three full seconds, thumb pressed so hard into my wrist I'd have a bruise there for a week, looking at the man whose mark I had carried for five years like it meant something.

Then I walked past him to Elena's shelf, closed my hand around a vial of concentrated wolfsbane, crossed the corridor, and pressed it to Rayna's throat.

"Caroline." Blake's voice cracked into full Alpha tone, meant to drop me to the floor.

My spine didn't bend. Whatever was left of my wolf held.

"Thirty seconds," I said, so quiet Elena had to lean in to hear it. "Or your mother learns what this tastes like from the inside."

His aura flared white-hot against my skin. I didn't flinch. Twenty seconds later, he said, "Do it," to Elena, and turned away like he hadn't just decided something.

Elena finished the ritual. Lakelyn's fever broke under my hands, her small chest evening out into real sleep. She would live. I felt that certainty settle into my bones one breath before I felt something else — my wolf, already caged for years, shudder once and go dark. Not sleeping. Gone quiet in a way that had a bottom to it.

I sat on the healer's floor, shaking, my daughter breathing steadily above me, and understood the trade I'd just made.

Outside the door, low and deliberate, I heard Blake already talking to someone through the mind-link.

They summoned me to the great hall before I could stand without Elena's arm under mine. Every ranked wolf in Shadowvale stood assembled. Shelby stood behind Blake, her throat bare and unscarred, wearing his fresh mark like a trophy.

"I, Blake Turner, Alpha of Shadowvale Pack," he said, loud enough to carry to the rafters, "reject you, Caroline Nichols, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold first. Then hollow. Then it burned with a pain that had no source, like a door closing on an empty room. My cracked aura split wide open in front of two hundred wolves, and I went down on my knees — not submission, just a body giving out under the exact weight of five years tearing loose at once.

Blake didn't look at me. "Wolfless. Rankless. A danger to this pack." He turned to the Deltas flanking the hall. "Remove her from Shadowvale territory by dawn."

He never once said Lakelyn's name.

The Deltas lifted me by the arms. I didn't beg. I pressed my thumb to my wrist and counted my own heartbeat all the way to the door, while behind me Shelby's laugh, low and satisfied, followed me out into the dark.
