At six in the morning, the penthouse was a hush of pale gray light. The marble under my bare feet was cold. I sat on the edge of the bathtub with the test stick in my hand and watched the second pink line darken until there was no more pretending.
Eight weeks. Maybe nine.
My thumb found the inside of my left wrist and pressed there. A small habit. A way to hold myself in one piece. I did it without thinking, the way some people pray.
I looked up at the mirror across from me. The woman in it had hair still damp at the temples, no makeup, a face two years older than the one Dutton Kelly married. I tried to picture telling him. I tried to picture his face when he saw the test, when he saw the small black-and-white printout I would tuck inside a card. He liked that little Italian place on Sixty-Third with the candles in old wine bottles. I could book the corner table. I could wear the navy dress he once said suited me.
For a moment I let myself believe it.
The thing I had built with him was hollow. I knew that better than anyone. But maybe a child could fill it. Maybe a real, living thing could grow inside the shape of what we pretended to be, and the pretending could become true. People said it happened. People wrote songs about it.
I laid my hand flat on my stomach. Still flat. Still mine.
'Hi,' I whispered. The word felt foolish in the marble quiet. I said it again anyway.
Dutton's side of the bed was already empty when I came out. It had been empty when I went to sleep too. I told myself he had an early flight.

He didn't come home that night. Or the next. Or the one after that.
I called the office on the second day. Adele Young picked up on the first ring, the way she always does. Her voice is the same temperature as bottled water.
'Mrs. Kelly. Mr. Kelly is in meetings until late. He asked me to drop off the Henderson files at the penthouse. Is seven all right.'
It wasn't a question. Not really. Adele doesn't ask questions.
'Seven is fine,' I said.
She came at seven exactly. She is always exact. She wore a charcoal blazer and the kind of low heels that make no sound on hardwood. She set the folder on the entryway console, slipped the blazer off her shoulders because the foyer was warm, and laid it over the back of the chair while she fished a second envelope out of her bag.
'These need his signature by Friday,' she said. 'I've flagged the pages.'
'Thank you.'
'Goodnight, Mrs. Kelly.'
She left. The blazer stayed.
I stood in the foyer for a long minute after the elevator chimed shut. Then I walked over and picked it up, meaning to hang it for her. The fabric was warm where her body had been. And under the warm there was a smell.
Dutton's cologne. The cedar one. The one I bought him in Milan two Christmases ago because he said he liked how it lingered.
It clung to the inside of her collar like it had been there a while.
I didn't move for a moment. I just stood with the blazer in my hands and let the foyer light catch on the seams.
Then I folded it. Carefully. The way I'd been taught to fold things in college, sleeves in first, then the bottom up to meet the shoulders. I set it on the chair in a neat square. I didn't smell it again. I didn't need to.
I pressed my thumb to my wrist and walked into the kitchen and poured a glass of water I didn't drink.

On the fourth night the elevator opened and Dutton came in with his coat still on and his keys still in his hand.
I was in the living room. I had not turned on the lamps yet. The city threw enough light through the windows to see by, that bruised blue glow that New York gets just before it commits to dark.
He didn't take his coat off. That was the first thing. In two years he had never once spoken to me with his coat still on.
'Raya.'
'Dutton.'
His face was the face I fell for at that corporate gala two and a half years ago. The line of his jaw. The small mole below his left eye that I had spent months pretending not to look at. He stood in the foyer the way he stood in his boardroom, weight even, hands loose. A man about to restructure something.
'I want a divorce,' he said.
The sentence had no buildup. He delivered it the way he delivered quarterly numbers.
'Arabella's back in the city,' he said. 'She's not well. She needs me.'
He did not sit down. He did not come closer. He did not look once at my stomach, which was still flat and held a secret eight weeks old that I had been planning, just yesterday, to wrap in a card.
My thumb went to my wrist. Pressed.
I watched him from the dim half of the room and waited for the part of me that was supposed to break. It didn't come. What came instead was a strange, level clearness, like the moment after a glass falls and before it hits the floor.
'All right,' I said.
He blinked. Just once. He had been ready for something else.
'I have one condition,' I said.
'Name it.'
'Sole custody. Of any child.'
His mouth moved into the small, dismissive shape it makes when a clause is too easy to argue. 'Raya, there is no child.'
'Hypothetically.'
'Fine.' He waved his hand once, the way he waves away a line item. 'Of course. Yes.'
He was already somewhere else. I could see it in him. He had said the hard sentence and the rest was logistics.
'I'll have my attorney look at the papers,' I said.
'Good.' He paused, as if he might say something more, and didn't. He turned back toward the elevator. His coat had not come off the entire time.
The doors closed. The penthouse hummed in his absence the way empty rooms do.
I stayed where I was for a long time. Then I walked into the bedroom and opened the drawer and took out the small white card I had bought yesterday afternoon. Cream paper. Gold edges. I had not written in it yet.
I tore it once down the middle. Then again. I dropped the pieces into the wastebasket without watching them land.

A week later I sat across from my attorney in a glass-walled office on Madison and signed my name on each tabbed page. My handwriting did not shake. My attorney was a careful woman in her fifties with reading glasses on a chain.
'Raya,' she said, when I reached the last page. 'Are you certain.'
'Yes.'
She waited. She let the pen rest.
'I have to ask one more time,' she said gently. 'Are you certain.'
'Yes.'
I handed the pages back. I pressed my thumb to my wrist under the table where she could not see, and I felt, very faintly, the place where a heartbeat that wasn't mine had begun to keep its own time.
I heard about Arabella from Savannah, who heard it from someone at the Kelly Group's PR firm, who mentioned it the way people mention weather — casually, as though it wasn't a grenade.
She had moved into the guest suite. Temporarily, the word going around said. Due to her condition.
I was sitting at my desk when Savannah told me. I kept my eyes on my screen. I clicked through three emails I didn't read.
'Temporarily,' Savannah repeated, her voice doing the thing it does when she is deciding how loudly to be angry. 'In his apartment. Where you still legally live.'
'I'm aware of where I live.'
'Raya.'
'I'm handling it,' I said.
She let it sit for a moment. Then: 'Okay.'
She didn't believe me. She was right not to.
I thought about the guest bathroom. The one with the rainfall showerhead Dutton had installed two years ago because I mentioned once, offhand, that I liked them. I thought about someone else's toiletries on that shelf. Someone else's silk robe on the hook behind the door. I thought about Arabella Watson standing in Dutton's kitchen in the morning, barefoot, like a woman who had always been there and was only now letting herself be seen.

The view of the park, the marble floors, the particular quality of silence that expensive buildings have — all of it had always belonged to him. I had only ever been a guest who forgot to act like one.
I took my books. I took the coffee mug from the kitchen cabinet — the plain white one I'd bought myself at a drugstore on Lexington because the set Dutton owned felt too heavy in my hands. I took the photograph from behind my phone case and held it for a moment before I put it in the front pocket of my carry-on, where I could not see it accidentally.
I did not leave a note. There was nothing to say that the empty closet didn't say better.
The elevator came. I stepped in with my two suitcases and my books in a tote bag and my coffee mug wrapped in a sweater so it wouldn't break. The doors closed on the penthouse and I watched the floor numbers count down and I did not look up at the mirrored ceiling.
I did not cry in the lobby. I did not cry in the car.
I pressed my thumb to my wrist the whole way to Brooklyn and watched the bridge cables pass overhead like the bars of something I was finally on the right side of.

The apartment was small and smelled like fresh paint and someone else's cleaning products. The living room had one window that faced a brick wall and floors that creaked in the same spot every time. I stood in the middle of it with my two suitcases and my tote bag and my wrapped coffee mug and I thought: this is mine.
All of it. The creaking floor and the brick view and the smell. Mine.
I sat down against the wall because there was no furniture yet, and I called Savannah.
She picked up on the second ring. 'Where are you.'
'Brooklyn. I moved out.'
A pause. Then: 'I'm coming. Don't move.'
'Savannah, you don't have to —'
But she had already hung up.
She arrived in forty minutes. She had two bags of takeout from the Thai place on my old block, a bottle of wine tucked under her arm, and her phone in her hand with the screen already lit.
She looked at me sitting on the floor. She looked at the two suitcases. She sat down beside me without a word, set the food between us, and put the wine back in the bag.
'You're not drinking,' she said. It wasn't a question.
'No.'
She nodded once. She didn't ask why. Savannah is the only person I know who understands that some questions are doors, and that sometimes the kindest thing is to leave them closed.
We ate pad thai on the floor of my empty apartment. The city made its sounds outside the window. A bus. Someone's music two floors up. The particular percussion of a place that doesn't know you yet and doesn't care.
'I have something,' Savannah said, after a while. She held up her phone. 'I've been adding to it for about eight months. I'm going to read it to you.'
'What is it.'
'It's a list.' She cleared her throat with great formality. 'Title: Things Dutton Kelly Can Go Do.' She looked at me over the phone. 'There are fourteen entries.'
I looked at her.
'Entry one,' she said. 'He can go do a full restructuring of his entire personality, starting with the part that thinks showing up with his coat still on counts as a conversation.'
Something shifted in my chest. A small, rusty thing.
'Entry two. He can go do a very long think about why his assistant smells like his cologne, and then he can go do whatever comes after that think, preferably somewhere I don't have to hear about it.'
The small rusty thing cracked open.
'Entry three —'
I laughed.
It came out wrong at first, too sharp, like something that had been held in too long. But then it came again, and it was real. It filled the empty room and bounced off the walls and Savannah looked at me with an expression I hadn't seen on her face in weeks — relief, pure and uncomplicated.
'There she is,' she said quietly.
I pressed the back of my hand to my mouth. My eyes were wet. I didn't know when that had happened.
'Keep going,' I said.
She kept going.
We sat on the floor of my empty apartment until the food was gone and the list was finished and the city outside had settled into its late-night register. My back ached from the wall. My face felt strange from laughing, like a muscle I had forgotten I had.
I laid my hand flat on my stomach in the dark, the way I had in the penthouse bathroom with the test stick still in my hand.
'Hi,' I said, very quietly, so only I could hear it.
Savannah was scrolling her phone and didn't look up.
The floor creaked in the same spot when I shifted my weight. The brick wall sat outside the window, patient and indifferent.
Mine.
The text came on a Wednesday night, just after ten.
I was in bed with a book I hadn't been reading, my thumb moving the same paragraph for the third time, when my phone lit up with a number I didn't recognize. I opened it without thinking.
*I hope you're doing well, truly. Dutton worries about you. He says you were always so quiet — he never knew what you were thinking. I suppose that must have been lonely for both of you.*
I read it once. Then again.
The prose style was careful. Soft. The kind of soft that has edges underneath it, the way a towel wrapped around a fist is still a fist. *Truly.* That word doing a lot of work. *Lonely for both of you* — as though she were offering me something. As though she were the generous one.
I set the phone face-down on the mattress and looked at the ceiling.
She had his phone. Or she had been near it. I thought about the kitchen counter in the penthouse, the way Dutton always left his phone charging by the espresso machine when he showered. Two years of watching that habit. She would have learned it in a week.
I picked the phone back up. Deleted the thread. Blocked the number.
Then I lay back and pressed my thumb to the inside of my wrist and listened to the building settle around me and did not think about Arabella Watson sitting in my kitchen, learning my husband's habits, deciding I was worth a text.
I did not tell Savannah. Not yet.

In this case it was Savannah, who had a contact at the Kelly Group's PR firm, who had a contact in the building's night concierge staff, who mentioned it the way people mention things they know they shouldn't know.
Arabella had called Dutton at two in the morning. Her voice barely above a whisper. She had taken too many of her anxiety pills, she said. She wasn't sure how many.
He had gone to the guest suite and found her on the bathroom floor. The prescription bottle beside her, half-empty. Her eyes glassy. He had held her until dawn.
I was standing at my kitchen window with my coffee when Savannah told me this. The brick wall outside was doing what it always did — sitting there, patient, indifferent. I watched a pigeon land on the ledge and immediately leave.
'The pills were melatonin,' Savannah said. Her voice had gone very flat, the way it does when she is furious and choosing precision over volume. 'Someone in the building talked. Apparently she had a prescription bottle she'd refilled with melatonin. He never asked for a tox screen.'
I took a sip of my coffee.
'Raya.'
'I heard you.'
'She staged it. She sat on that bathroom floor with a bottle of sleep supplements and waited for him to come hold her until sunrise, and he did, and he will keep doing it, because he does not want to know the truth badly enough to look for it.'
The pigeon came back. Landed in the same spot. Left again.
'I know,' I said.
Savannah was quiet for a moment. I could hear her breathing, the particular rhythm of someone holding something back.
'Are you angry?' she finally asked.
I thought about it honestly. I stood at my window and I thought about Dutton on the bathroom floor of the guest suite, holding a woman who had swallowed melatonin and called it a crisis, and I waited to feel something sharp.
What I felt instead was tired. And underneath the tired, something quieter. Something that felt almost like pity — not for Arabella, not for Dutton, but for the version of myself that had spent two years in that penthouse believing the hollow thing we had built was worth filling.
'No,' I said. 'Not anymore.'

The twelve-week appointment was on a Thursday morning. Savannah drove. She had insisted on driving since the first appointment, in the particular way she insists on things — not loudly, just completely, so that the alternative stops feeling like an option.
Mount Sinai's OB waiting room smelled like recycled air and hand sanitizer. The chairs were the padded kind that are trying to be comfortable and aren't quite. I filled out the intake form with my new address — the Brooklyn apartment, the creaking floor, the brick wall — and felt something settle in my chest when I wrote it. Mine.
Savannah sat beside me with her phone and her coffee and her running commentary on the waiting room's art choices, which she found personally offensive. I half-listened. The other half of me was doing the quiet arithmetic I had been doing for weeks — twelve weeks, which meant the baby was the size of a lime now, which meant I had approximately six months to figure out the rest of my life.
I was thinking about North Carolina when Savannah went quiet.
Not the gradual quiet of someone distracted. The sudden kind. The kind that has a shape.
I looked up.
She was looking across the lobby. Her coffee cup had stopped halfway to her mouth.
I followed her line of sight.
They were near the elevators. Arabella Watson, in a cream coat, her dark hair loose, her shoulders curved inward in that particular way — smaller than she was, always smaller than she was. And beside her, one hand at the small of her back, Dutton.
He was looking down at her. Not at the elevator panel, not at his phone. At her. The way you look at something you are afraid might break.
I watched for three seconds. Maybe four.
Then I looked back down at my intake form and wrote my emergency contact — Savannah Hunter — in the last blank field.
Savannah said nothing until we were in the car. The appointment had gone well. The heartbeat was strong. Dr. Voss had printed a new ultrasound image, clearer than the last, and I had folded it into my wallet without looking at it too long.
Savannah pulled out of the parking structure and onto Madison and drove two full blocks before she said: 'I saw them.'
'I know.'
'Raya —'
'I know, Savannah.'
She stopped at a red light. Her hands were tight on the wheel. I watched her jaw work through whatever she was deciding not to say first.
'She had her head on his shoulder,' Savannah said. 'In the lobby of the hospital where you just had your prenatal appointment. She had her head on his shoulder like she was the one who needed —' She stopped. Pressed her lips together. 'I'm sorry. I just —'
'It doesn't matter anymore,' I said.
The light changed. Savannah drove.
I laid my hand flat on my stomach, under my coat where she couldn't see, and felt the city move around us — the horns, the crosswalk signals, the particular indifferent noise of a place that doesn't know you and doesn't need to.
It doesn't matter anymore.
I said it again, quietly, inside where it counted.
I was still deciding if it was true.
