My Husband Harvested My Bone Marrow for His Wife Chapter 1

The kitchen smelled like brown butter and cinnamon, the way Evander liked his pancakes. Five years I'd made them this way, every anniversary morning, standing at this same marble island in this house his family had owned since before I was born. I wiped my hands on the dish towel and checked the clock. Six forty. He'd wake soon.

Next to the stove sat the gift I'd spent three weeks making — a leather journal, hand-stitched, his initials burned into the cover. E.S. I'd pricked my fingers a dozen times getting the stitches even. I wanted it perfect. Five years deserved perfect.

I went to twist my ring, the habit I'd had since the day he slid it on my finger. It caught on my knuckle wrong, and when I pulled it free to fix it, the morning light hit the inside of the band. I'd never really looked there before. Why would I? A ring is a ring. You wear it, you don't examine it like a jeweler.

But there were letters. Small, cursive, engraved deep into the gold.

*P.C.*

Not I.C. Not Iyla Campbell.

I stood there a long time, turning the ring under the light, telling myself it was nothing. A mistake at the shop. A leftover mold from another piece. My chest didn't believe it, though. My chest had already gone cold, the way it does right before you're sick.

I walked to Evander's study. His laptop was open on the desk, the way he always left it, too confident that no one in his own house would ever look. My hands weren't steady. I typed the county registry address anyway. I typed his full name.

*Evander James Sullivan.*

The page loaded slow, the little wheel spinning, and I remember thinking, absurdly, that I should turn back now, close it, go finish the pancakes. But I didn't.

Spouse of record: Paris Campbell.

I read it four times. I read it until the letters stopped looking like letters and just looked like shapes, black shapes on a white screen that didn't mean anything, that couldn't mean anything, because I had a certificate. I had it upstairs, in a velvet pouch in my nightstand, the one we signed together at the courthouse five years ago, the one with my name on it in his handwriting.

I went and got it. I don't remember climbing the stairs. I remember sitting on the edge of the bed with the paper in my lap, running my thumb over my own signature, and understanding, slowly, the way cold water finds every gap in your clothes, that the paper was fake. That somewhere, someone had made this for me. That I had spent five years married to a lie with my own name typed neatly at the bottom of it.

I carried both things back down to the kitchen — the ring, the certificate — and sat at the table across from the plate I'd made him. It went cold in front of me. I didn't cry. I kept waiting to, and it didn't come. Instead my mind did something strange and clinical, like a hand going down a checklist. My scholarship, gone, because a wife doesn't need one, he'd said, we'll take care of you. My friends from school, gone, because physical therapy schedules don't leave room for coffee dates. My twenties, gone. My body, worn down at the edges from five years of lifting a grown man in and out of a wheelchair, of hands that used to be soft now calloused from grip bars and gait belts. All of it spent on a man who was never, on paper, mine.

I heard him on the stairs before I saw him. Evander walked without the cane now — I'd taught him that, hour by hour, week by week — and some old reflex in me still felt proud of the sound of his steps. He came into the kitchen in his robe, glanced at the plate, and didn't sit down.

"Something's come up," he said. He wasn't looking at me. He was looking at his phone. "I have to cancel tonight."

"Cancel — the dinner?" My voice came out smaller than I meant it to.

"Paris is sick." He said her name the way other men say a prayer. "They called from London. I'm flying her home this morning."

I sat very still. My hands were folded in my lap so he wouldn't see them shake. "Evander — it's our anniversary."

"I know what day it is, Iyla." He finally looked up, but not at me — past me, at something in his own head. "This is Paris. You understand."

I didn't say anything else. There was nothing left in me shaped like an argument.

He left without touching the plate. I heard the front door, then the car in the drive, then nothing — just the hum of the refrigerator and my own breathing, too loud in the empty kitchen. I sat with the ring in one hand and the fake certificate in the other, staring at a breakfast growing cold for a man who had never, not for one single day, actually been my husband.
