My Husband Drugged Me to Stop Our Baby Chapter 1

Seven days of silence in a penthouse that used to feel like home.

Ares and I hadn't spoken since last Tuesday. Not a real word, anyway. Just the sounds of two people moving around each other in a space that had grown too small and too large at the same time. I cooked. He ate or he didn't. I slept on my side of the bed. He came in late and left early. Seven days of that.

I was standing at the kitchen counter when he walked in that evening. No greeting. He dropped a glossy boutique bag next to my cutting board like it was mail he'd been meaning to forward.

I looked at it. Pink ribbon. Expensive paper. Tags still attached inside.

I recognized the lingerie before I even finished unfolding the tissue. Black silk, ivory trim, the little embroidered detail at the strap. I'd seen it four days ago on Dani Nguyen's Instagram—a now-deleted post, screenshot-saved by three different people in our social circle before she took it down. The caption had been *cute but not my style 💅.*

What his mistress didn't want, he brought home to his wife.

I set it down on the counter. My hands were steady. I don't know how.

'Ares.' My voice came out quieter than I intended.

He wasn't looking at me. He was already walking toward the living room, toward the mantelpiece where I kept my father's pocket watch. The one thing I'd asked to keep after the estate settled. Silver case, initials engraved on the back, the glass slightly scratched from the day my father dropped it on a hiking trail when I was nine. He'd laughed about that scratch. Said it gave it character.

Ares picked it up. Turned it over once. Slid it into his jacket pocket.

'That's my father's watch.' The words came out flat.

'Dani mentioned she liked it.' He said it the way you'd say *I grabbed milk on the way home.* 'I told her I'd bring it by.'

Something moved through my chest. Not anger. Something older and colder than anger.

'That's the only thing I have left of him.'

Ares finally looked at me. His eyes were calm. Patient, almost, the way someone is patient when they're explaining something obvious to someone slow.

'Your mother's ICU bill is due on the fifteenth,' he said. 'Shall I cancel the payment?'

The room went very quiet.

I picked up the gift bag. Set it back down. Walked to the bedroom and closed the door.

I didn't slam it. I didn't have the energy for that, and I knew it wouldn't matter anyway.

I sat on the edge of the bed in the dark for a long time. My phone had been lighting up for weeks with notifications I'd been ignoring. I don't know what made me open them that night. Maybe I just needed to know the full shape of it.

Seventeen Venmo transactions. All from Dani Nguyen. All for one cent.

*tip for the housewife 😘*

*thanks for keeping his bed warm for me*

*don't spend it all in one place babe*

Every single one public. Visible to our friends, our colleagues, the people we'd had to dinner in this apartment. I scrolled through all seventeen. Then I took screenshots of each one, set my phone face-down on the nightstand, and lay back on the pillow.

I stared at the ceiling until the light changed.

The next morning I told Ares I was going to have my ring cleaned. He didn't look up from his phone.

The jeweler on Fifth Avenue was a small, careful man with silver-framed glasses. He took my ring, held it under his loupe, and went very still. He examined it for longer than a cleaning consultation required. Then he set it on the velvet pad between us and folded his hands.

'Mrs. Stone.' He paused. 'I want to be straightforward with you. This stone is cubic zirconia. Retail value, perhaps—' another pause, '—one hundred and eighty dollars.'

I sat in the velvet chair and did not move.

'The setting is real gold,' he added, as though that would help.

I picked up my phone. Opened Instagram. Scrolled to a photo Dani had posted three months ago. Her hand resting on the stem of a champagne flute, angled just so, the way you angle a hand when the point is the ring.

Three carats. The real one. The one I'd watched Ares pick out seven years ago in this same neighborhood, two blocks from here, while I stood beside him and thought I was watching him choose something for me.

The caption read: *He has excellent taste. 💎*

I put my phone back in my bag. I thanked the jeweler. I walked out into the November air and stood on the sidewalk while the city moved around me.

My left hand felt like something I didn't recognize.

I had been wearing a lie for seven years and calling it a marriage.
