Erased by the CEO: My Vengeful Return Chapter 1

Chapter 1

The basement lab of Vance Innovations was a sanctuary of silence, broken only by the rhythmic hum of servers and the frantic clicking of Clara Hayes’s keyboard. At twenty-six, Clara was the invisible spine of the company, the ghost in the machine. While the world saw her husband as a visionary titan of luxury tech, Clara was the one actually writing the code, soldering the circuits, and breathing life into the metal.

She rubbed her tired eyes, pushing a stray lock of messy brown hair behind her ear. On the secondary monitor, the live feed of the annual Vance Innovations Charity Gala played on mute. She hadn’t gone. Julian had told her it was a 'fluff piece' event, that he needed her here, perfecting the Vanguard algorithm before the upcoming merger talks.

*“You’re my secret weapon, Clara,”* he had whispered that morning, kissing her forehead. *“We keep our marriage quiet just a little longer, just until the board approves the Croft Industries merger. Then, we take over the world together.”*

Clara smiled softly at the memory, her fingers reaching up to trace the silver wedding band she wore on a chain hidden beneath her oversized MIT sweatshirt. Five years of secrecy. Five years of being a ghost. But it was for their future.

She leaned forward to grab her coffee mug, accidentally brushing her mouse. The volume on the livestream unmuted.

“...and so, it is with the utmost joy that I stand before you tonight not just as a CEO, but as a man who has finally found his equal.”

Julian Vance’s voice filled the lab. Clara paused, her coffee cup suspended mid-air. On screen, Julian looked devastatingly handsome in his custom Tom Ford tuxedo, his charismatic smile blinding the flashing cameras.

“A king needs his queen,” Julian continued, his voice smooth and commanding. “And I am thrilled to announce that Vance Innovations will not only be merging with Croft Industries, but our families will be merging as well. She said yes.”

Clara’s heart stopped.

Julian reached out his hand. Stepping into the spotlight was Seraphina Croft. The heiress was a vision in crimson silk, her blonde hair perfectly coiffed, her smile a practiced beacon of aristocratic entitlement. But it wasn’t Seraphina’s dress that made Clara drop her coffee mug.

It was the massive, eight-carat diamond ring glittering on Seraphina’s left hand.

“Thank you, Julian,” Seraphina purred into the microphone, leaning into him. “We are so excited to build our future together. A true partnership.”

The mug shattered against the linoleum floor. Hot coffee splattered across Clara’s sneakers, but she didn’t feel it. She couldn’t breathe. The walls of the windowless lab suddenly felt like a tomb.

*He’s engaged?*

“No,” Clara whispered, her voice trembling. “No, that’s a joke. It’s a PR stunt. It has to be.”

But as Julian leaned down and kissed Seraphina passionately on live television, the truth hit Clara with the force of a freight train.

She didn’t think. She just ran.

Clara sprinted out of the basement, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. She didn’t stop for her coat, didn’t care that she was wearing faded jeans and a grease-stained sweatshirt. She bolted through the empty corporate corridors, burst out the side exit, and hailed a cab in the freezing rain.

Fifteen minutes later, Clara pushed through the revolving doors of the St. Regis Hotel. The grand ballroom was a sea of glittering gowns and tailored suits. Champagne flowed like water. Laughter echoed off the crystal chandeliers.

“Miss, you can’t be in here,” a burly security guard said, stepping in front of her.

“Get out of my way,” Clara snapped, ducking under his arm.

She shoved her way through the crowd of billionaires, tech moguls, and socialites. People gasped and muttered as she bumped into them, but Clara’s eyes were locked on the stage. Julian and Seraphina were stepping down the stairs, surrounded by a swarm of reporters.

“Julian!” Clara screamed. Her voice tore through the elegant hum of the ballroom like a siren.

The cameras stopped flashing. The string quartet faltered. Hundreds of heads turned to stare at the disheveled woman standing in the center of the room, panting and dripping with rain.

Julian froze. For a fraction of a second, Clara saw genuine panic flash in his dark eyes. But it vanished so quickly she almost thought she imagined it, replaced instantly by a mask of polite confusion.

“Julian, what is this?” Clara demanded, marching toward him. “What the hell is going on?”

Seraphina Croft raised a perfectly sculpted eyebrow, clutching Julian’s arm tighter. “Julian, darling. Who on earth is this bedraggled creature? Did someone let the kitchen staff wander out?”

“I am not the kitchen staff,” Clara snarled, her hands shaking as she stopped a few feet from them. She looked directly at Julian, pleading with her eyes. “Julian, tell her. Tell them who I am.”

Julian let out a heavy, patronizing sigh. He looked at the crowd, offering a sympathetic, practiced smile. “Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for the interruption. This is Clara Hayes. She’s one of the junior engineers in our basement labs.”

*Junior engineer?* Clara felt like she had been slapped. “Junior? I wrote the entire architecture for the Vanguard release! And I am your—”

“Clara, please,” Julian interrupted, his voice dripping with condescension. He took a step toward her, holding his hands up as if calming a wild animal. “We’ve talked about this. The long hours in the lab are taking a toll on your mental health. You’re having another episode.”

“An episode?” Clara gasped, her chest heaving. “You’re telling these people I’m crazy? Julian, we’ve been married for five years!”

A collective gasp echoed through the ballroom. The reporters frantically raised their cameras, hungry for the scandal.

Seraphina let out a sharp, mocking laugh. “Married? Julian, is this woman delusional?”

“Profoundly,” Julian said, shaking his head with a sorrowful expression. “Clara, this obsession of yours has gone too far. I’ve tried to be accommodating because of your contributions to the company, but claiming we are married? This is unhinged, even for you.”

“Obsession?” Clara’s voice broke. She reached up, her fingers fumbling with the silver chain around her neck. She pulled it free, the silver wedding band dangling in the chandelier light. “I have the ring, Julian! The one you gave me in City Hall when we promised we’d build this empire together!”

Julian didn’t even flinch. He looked at the ring, then back to the crowd. “A cheap silver band anyone can buy at a pawn shop. Honestly, Clara, I am deeply concerned for you. You’ve fabricated an entire relationship in your head because I praised your coding once.”

“You liar!” Clara screamed, stepping toward him. “I gave you everything! I ghost-wrote your patents! I built your entire luxury line while you took the credit!”

“That is enough,” Julian’s voice hardened, the velvet dropping to reveal the cold steel underneath. He signaled to the security guards rushing across the floor. “Escort Miss Hayes off the premises. And call a psychiatric facility. She clearly poses a danger to herself and others.”

“Don’t touch me!” Clara thrashed as two massive guards grabbed her arms. “Julian, you can’t do this! You can’t just erase me!”

Seraphina stepped closer, her eyes raking over Clara with absolute disgust. “Take the trash out, gentlemen. It’s ruining my engagement party.”

“Julian!” Clara cried out, her heels slipping on the polished marble as the guards began to drag her backward. “Julian, look at me!”

Julian walked toward her slowly. He gestured for the guards to pause for a moment. He leaned in close, his face mere inches from hers. The crowd saw a compassionate CEO checking on a sick employee.

But Clara saw the dead, shark-like emptiness in his eyes.

“You wanted to be seen, Clara?” Julian whispered, his breath hot against her ear, his voice so low only she could hear it. “Now everyone sees you. A crazy, pathetic stalker. Screaming about a marriage no one will ever believe.”

“I’ll show them the certificates,” she hissed back, tears of pure rage burning her eyes. “I’ll show them the lab footage.”

Julian smiled, a terrifying, triumphant smirk. “You won’t show them anything. While you were throwing your little tantrum here, I had security clear out your desk. Your keycards are deactivated. You are locked out of the lab, locked out of the servers, and locked out of my life.”

Clara’s blood ran cold. “My work… my father’s prototype…”

“Mine now,” Julian whispered. He stood up straight, adjusting his cuffs, and looked at the guards. “Get this lunatic out of my sight.”

“No! No, Julian!” Clara screamed, fighting with everything she had, but the guards were too strong. They hauled her backward, her voice drowning in the sudden surge of the string quartet starting up again on Julian’s command.

Through the blur of her tears, Clara watched her husband pull Seraphina Croft into his arms for another kiss, laughing as if Clara had never existed at all.
