Chapter 2

Three days into my marriage, I met the man who started everything.

Grandpa Marshall was already at the breakfast table when I walked in — short, barrel-chested, with the kind of sharp eyes that had probably closed a hundred deals before most men finished their coffee. He pushed himself out of his chair the moment he saw me. Not a slow, elderly rise. A decisive one.

'There she is.' He took both my hands before I could say a word. His grip was warm and dry and absolute. 'Ava Castillo Marshall. I've been waiting for you.'

I smiled, because what else do you do. 'Good morning, Mr. Marshall.'

Trey was already at the table, coffee cup halfway to his mouth. He caught my eye and something flickered across his face — amusement, maybe. He said nothing.

Grandpa Marshall held my hand a moment longer before releasing it. He looked me over the way my father looks at acquisition paperwork — thorough, approving, final.

'Best thing to happen to this family in fifteen years,' he announced. 'I mean that.'

'Thank you,' I said carefully.

'I turn eighty in March.' He sat back down and reached for his orange juice. 'I'd like great-grandchildren before that. Two, minimum. Three would be better.'

I choked on my coffee.

Trey set down his cup. He pressed two fingers to his mouth. His eyes were very warm.

'Grandpa,' he said mildly.

'I'm just being clear about my timeline,' the old man said, completely unbothered. 'She seems like a practical woman. Practical women appreciate clarity.' He looked at me. 'Don't you, Ava?'

I dabbed my mouth with a linen napkin and collected every scrap of dignity I had left. 'Extremely practical,' I said. 'March does feel a little aggressive, though.'

Grandpa Marshall laughed — a real laugh, loud and delighted. He pointed at me across the table. 'I like her,' he told Trey. 'I like her very much.'

Trey's eyes stayed on me. 'So do I,' he said quietly.

I reached for my coffee and looked away.

The call from Elena came that afternoon. Cole and Daphne were making their debut. The Metropolitan Club, a charity gala, tonight — already confirmed in Serena Voss's column with a photograph taken outside a SoHo restaurant, Daphne in a dress I recognized from the back of my own closet.

I stood at the window of my new bedroom and read the column twice.

Then I opened my closet.

Then I looked at Daphne.

I took Trey's arm.

We walked out.

In the car, neither of us spoke for a block. Then Trey said, 'How do you feel?'

I looked out the window at the city moving past. 'Like myself,' I said. 'For the first time in a week.'

He didn't say anything. But when I looked over, he was watching me with that expression I still hadn't learned to name.

Page Six ran the photo the next morning. Someone had caught us at the entrance — Trey's hand at the small of my back, my chin up, both of us mid-step. The headline read: *MRS. MARSHALL.*

I read it three times over breakfast. I told myself the warmth in my chest was victory.

My mother stopped mid-sentence.

I had never, in my entire life, seen Elena Castillo stop mid-sentence.

Trey took her hand — not a handshake, but a proper, two-handed greeting, the old-world kind — and guided her toward the sitting room with the practiced ease of a man who has been navigating formidable women his entire life. I followed at a distance, quiet, watching.

The Cartier bracelet appeared somewhere around the fifteen-minute mark. Not showy. Just placed on the table beside her tea, its pale blue box already open, with a brief and perfectly calibrated acknowledgment that the disruption to her plans had been significant and that the Marshall family was grateful for her grace.

My mother looked at the bracelet. Then at Trey. Then at the bracelet again.

She picked it up.

'The formal reception,' she said. 'I was thinking the Plaza, obviously, but I wonder if you have thoughts on the table arrangement—'

'I defer entirely to your judgment on the room,' Trey said, 'but I did have one thought about the flowers.'

Elena leaned forward.

I stood in the doorway and watched my mother — the most immovable social force of my childhood — become, in the space of one hour, Trey Marshall's most ferocious ally.

I wasn't sure whether to laugh or to be afraid.

Trey glanced over his shoulder, just briefly, and caught my eye.

He was smiling.

Chapter 3

The basket was sitting on the kitchen island when I came down for coffee.

It was a good basket. Woven, cream-colored, with a ribbon tied around the handle in a bow that was somehow not embarrassing. I stood in the doorway and looked at it.

It moved.

A small white head pushed up through the ribbon — round ears, black button nose, fur like something you'd see on a cloud if clouds were soft enough to be worth touching. It blinked at me. Then it made a sound that was not quite a bark and not quite a squeak, but landed somewhere between the two in a register that did something involuntary to my chest.

I looked at Trey.

He was leaning in the doorway to the hall, coffee already in hand, watching me with an expression I almost caught before he adjusted it into something more neutral. Almost.

'What is this,' I said. Not a question, exactly.

'Samoyed,' he said. 'Eight weeks old.'

The puppy put both front paws on the edge of the basket and wobbled. I crossed the kitchen before I made a decision about it and lifted him out, and he immediately climbed up my arm and settled into the crook of my elbow with the absolute confidence of an animal who had already determined where he belonged.

He was warm. He was impossibly soft. He smelled like something clean and new.

I looked down at him. He looked up at me. We reached an understanding.

'Why a Samoyed,' I said.

Trey considered this for a moment. 'They're very loyal,' he said. 'To the right person.'

I looked at the puppy. Not at Trey.

'He's adequate,' I said.

I did not put Biscuit down for the rest of the morning.

Trey told me we had plans for the weekend. No further details. I had learned, in four days of marriage, that pressing him for details was an exercise in receiving beautifully constructed non-answers delivered with complete warmth, so I stopped asking and went to pack a bag.

Bergdorf's was closed. Privately, for us, the floor lit up and every sales associate knowing his name before he said it. They brought champagne I didn't ask for and Birkins I didn't have to request — three of them, in colors I would have chosen myself if I'd been given thirty seconds and a catalog. Cognac. Vert Cypress. A limited black I recognized from the waitlist I'd been on for two years.

I ran my thumb along the edge of the black one.

'How did you know,' I said.

'Know what?' He was looking at a display case, apparently very interested in a silk scarf.

I let it go.

The helicopter to the Hamptons took forty minutes. The Marshall estate appeared below us at dusk — white shingle, green hedges, the Atlantic going silver at the edges. I pressed my face to the window like I was twelve years old and then remembered myself and sat back.

Trey was watching me with that expression again. The one I didn't have a name for yet.

Saturday morning, the yacht. Sunday morning, the photographs were everywhere — someone had documented all of it with the practiced invisibility of a person paid to be invisible, and Serena Voss had run the images with a caption that was essentially a sonnet about the Birkins.

I was drinking my coffee when Daphne's Instagram post came through. A restaurant I recognized — the kind with a six-week wait and a tasting menu that started at four hundred dollars — her table dressed up in a way that suggested the expense was casual. The post had seventeen comments. Three of them asked, in different variations, about the handbags I'd been carrying.

I took a sip of my coffee.

I put my phone face-down.

I told myself I was stretching my legs. I took Biscuit off my lap — he made a sound of protest and then went back to sleep on the cushion — and I walked down the hall.

The east room was dark except for the lamp light drifting from the hall. Trey sat at the piano with his back to the door, in a dark shirt with the sleeves pushed up, his shoulders moving slightly with the music. He hadn't heard me.

Biscuit had. The puppy padded past my ankles and crossed the room and sat down directly on Trey's feet with complete, unilateral confidence.

Trey didn't stop playing. He looked down at Biscuit for a moment, and something in the line of his shoulders changed — softened, maybe. He kept playing.

I stood in the doorway and I watched his shoulders and I listened to the music.

I stayed longer than I meant to.

I filed it — the dark room, the melody I didn't recognize, the dog asleep on his feet, the way he'd looked down at Biscuit with an expression no one was supposed to see — into a private archive I had not yet named and was increasingly aware of anyway.

Then I turned and went back to my sofa and my brand files and my cooling coffee.

I did not think about the piano.

I thought about it for a very long time.

Chapter 4

I sent the tip on a Thursday morning, sitting at the kitchen island with my second cup of coffee and Biscuit asleep across my feet.

It wasn't hard. I'd spent three years attending every finance dinner and charity board meeting Cole dragged me to, smiling at the right people, remembering names. You accumulate contacts that way. You accumulate information. I'd never expected to use any of it like this.

He dropped to one knee.

On a SoHo sidewalk, on a Wednesday afternoon, in front of a camera he also wasn't supposed to know was there, Cole Hicks went down on one knee.

I looked at him.

I looked at him for a long, quiet moment. At the coat and the stubble and the careful, constructed sincerity of his expression. At the man who had taken a microphone at The Plaza and said, in front of every person who mattered in my world, that I was something he was done with.

And I laughed.

Not cruel. Genuinely not unkind. I laughed the way you laugh when something finally strikes you as exactly as absurd as it is — clean, honest, completely free of the anger that used to live underneath it.

'You told me,' I said, 'and I'm quoting, that loving me had started to feel like something you were supposed to do rather than something you wanted to.' I watched his jaw tighten. 'You said that into a microphone, Cole. In front of the string quartet.'

He opened his mouth.

'Don't,' I said pleasantly.

I stepped past him.

The black car was at the curb. Trey stood at the open door — one arm resting along the top of it, patient, completely unhurried, the way he always was. He looked at Cole once. Not with hostility. With the calm, total indifference of a man who has already won and sees no reason to perform about it.

From the back seat, Biscuit pressed his nose to the window and produced a low, steady growl with the focused conviction of an animal who has done a thorough assessment and reached a firm conclusion.

I got in.

The door closed.

Trey settled in beside me. The car pulled away. I looked out the window at the city and felt the last of it leave me — the anger, the grief, the careful architecture of humiliation I'd been carrying since The Plaza. Gone. Replaced by something lighter and stranger and considerably more dangerous.

After a moment, Trey said: 'Biscuit has excellent instincts.'

'He does,' I agreed.

I didn't look at Trey. But I was smiling, and I was fairly certain he already knew it.
