My Football Star Betrayed Me, So I Chose His Rival Chapter 1

My boyfriend called me to a hotel at midnight.

He was naked, but he had not been waiting for me.

A famous actress lay beneath his sheets.

The condom had broken because she had bought the wrong size.

He said I knew his body better than anyone.

Then he handed me his wallet and told me to buy another box.

For three full seconds, I stood inside Suite 1807 and heard nothing but the soft hum of the air conditioner.

Twenty-seven-year-old Lucas Grant leaned against the minibar with a towel riding low on his hips. Water still shone on his chest. I knew the small scar under his left rib, the one he had once let me trace with my mouth.

Vanessa Vale watched me from the bed. The award-winning actress had one manicured hand wrapped around the sheet and no embarrassment anywhere on her beautiful face.

Lucas snapped his fingers. “Maya. Did you hear me?”

I looked at the leather wallet in his outstretched hand.

“Vanessa bought regulars,” he said, irritated, as if she had ordered the wrong room service. “Too tight. One tore. You know what I use.”

Vanessa laughed. “Apparently your little assistant knows everything.”

I was not his assistant. I was Harbor City Football Club’s team manager, the person who arranged travel, protected player schedules, calmed sponsors, negotiated appearance obligations, and made sure twenty-six highly paid athletes reached the correct stadium wearing the correct boots. I was twenty-five years old, excellent at my job, and foolish enough to believe the man in front of me loved me.

I took the wallet.

Lucas smiled, already turning back toward the bed. “That’s my girl.”

The words hit harder than if he had slapped me.

At the all-night pharmacy across the street, the clerk recognized me. Her gaze moved from my fitted red dress to the box in my hand, and pity flickered across her face.

I wanted to throw the box into traffic. I wanted to return upstairs and ask Lucas what the last six months had meant. The nights he came to my apartment after away games. The lazy kisses against my kitchen counter. The way he had held me after taking what I had offered only because I believed we were together.

Instead, I bought what he asked for.

That was the last thing I would ever buy him.

When I returned, Lucas opened the door without the towel. I kept my eyes on his face and pushed the paper bag into his chest.

“Thanks.” He caught my wrist before I could turn away. His thumb dragged over the inside of it, a familiar touch that used to make my pulse jump. “Hey. Don’t look like that.”

“Like what?”

“Jealous.” His mouth tilted. “It’s not attractive on you.”

Vanessa called from the bed, “Are we doing this or not?”

I pulled free. “Have a good night.”

The elevator doors closed on his confused expression.

I made it to my car before my hands began shaking.

The worst part was not that Lucas was a playboy. Everyone knew that. Models wore his jersey to fashion week. Influencers posted blurry photographs from his yacht. I had handled enough morning-after press statements to recognize the scent of his cologne on a scandal.

But I had believed I was different.

Two years earlier, when I was still a junior logistics coordinator, a sponsor executive named Martin Hale had cornered me in a stadium storage room after a charity gala. He had locked the door, trapped me between stacked equipment cases, and told me a woman with my body should be more grateful for powerful attention.

Someone had pounded on the door. The lock had opened. A man in a black training jacket had pulled Hale away from me and stayed until my breathing steadied.

The corridor had been dark. I had seen the number seven on the jacket and heard a low voice say, “You’re safe. I won’t let him touch you again.”

The next day Lucas—Harbor City’s number seven at the time—had found me and said, “About last night, you don’t owe me anything.”

I had never forgotten.

When he flirted with me months later, I told myself the tenderness behind his arrogance was real. When he came to my apartment drunk after we lost the cup semifinal, I let him kiss me.

“Maya,” he had murmured, forehead pressed to mine. “You’re the only person who makes the noise stop.”

I should have asked what we were, but I unbuttoned his shirt.

He was gentle that first night. So gentle I mistook care for commitment.

He asked if I was sure, voice low against my ear.

“Tell me if it’s too much,” he murmured. “I’ll stop the second you say so.”

I nodded, already breathless. He kissed every place his hands touched—my throat, the inside of my wrists, the soft skin just above my hips—before he settled between my thighs. When the blunt head of him pressed against my entrance, he paused, eyes searching mine.

“Still okay?”

“Yes.”

He pushed in slowly, inch by careful inch. A sharp pinch of pain made me tense. He stopped immediately, forehead resting against mine.

“Breathe for me,” he whispered, kissing the corner of my mouth. “I’ve got you.” His hand slid between us, thumb circling my clit in slow, steady strokes until the pain eased into something warmer. Only then did he sink the rest of the way in, filling me completely.

I gasped at the stretch. He stayed still, letting me adjust, whispering my name like a promise until my body softened around him.

“You feel… perfect,” he said, almost reverent.

When he finally began to move, it was with long, measured thrusts, never rushed. Every time I clenched or whimpered he slowed again, murmuring soft praise against my skin. “That’s it… just like that… you’re doing so well.”

I came quietly, trembling beneath him, and he followed soon after with a low groan, burying himself deep as he spilled inside me.

Afterward, he tucked me against his chest and traced slow circles on my bare shoulder, still half-hard and warm inside me, as if he couldn’t bear to leave me empty just yet.

I built an entire relationship out of that tenderness.

Lucas never gave it a name, and I never forced him to. He slept in my bed twice a week. When gossip linked him to other women, he said publicity was part of football. Then he would put his mouth against my neck and ask whether I trusted him.

I always said yes.

At three in the morning, I sat on the bathroom floor and deleted every private photograph of us from my phone. I threw away the silk ties he liked to loop around my wrists. I found the emergency contraceptive packet from three months earlier at the back of a drawer and crushed it in my fist.

I had swallowed nausea, headaches, and fear so Lucas could enjoy himself without inconvenience. I had allowed a camera into our bed because he said keeping a piece of me would make away games easier. My face had not been visible in most of the images, but he had one full photograph—my body bare, my eyes covered with black silk, his hand spread possessively over my hip.

At the time, I had thought it was trust.

Now I understood it had only ever been access.

The next morning, I arrived at the training center at seven. Lucas’s newest scandal was contained behind a bland statement about respecting personal privacy.

At nine fifteen, he strolled into my office as though he had not sent me to buy condoms for another woman.

“You left fast.” He shut the door behind him.

“I had work.”

“You always have work.”

He came around my desk. His palm landed on my backside with an easy, proprietary squeeze.

My chair scraped the floor as I stood. “Don’t touch me.”

Lucas blinked. “Seriously?”

“Yes.”

His surprise hardened into offense. “What is this? Punishment because I slept with Vanessa?”

“It’s me correcting a misunderstanding.” I kept my voice steady though my heart was tearing itself raw. “You and I are done.”

“We were never anything to be done.”

The cruelty was casual. That made it worse.

I nodded once. “Then this should be easy.”

He caught my elbow when I moved past him. His grip was firm enough to hurt. Heat flashed between our bodies.

Lucas stared at me, then released me with a scoff. “Please. Women like you don’t climb into my bed for love. You wanted the fame, the face, the access. You got it.”

I looked at the man I had worshipped for saving me.

“You’re right about one thing,” I said. “I got enough.”

I walked out without crying where he could see.
