My Groom’s Mistress Wanted the Wedding I Paid For Chapter 1

I was kneeling on my living room floor with a seating chart spread out like a battle map when the doorbell rang. Eleven days. That's how much time I had left before the wedding. Eleven days until I walked into The Glasshouse in the dress hanging in my closet and married the man whose rent I'd paid three weeks ago because his stipend came up short again.

I thought it was the florist. I'd been waiting for sample bouquets all afternoon.

I opened the door and found Mrs. Castillo.

She stood in the hallway with her coat still buttoned, purse clutched against her ribs like she was bracing for impact. Her face was set in that expression I'd learned to recognize over three years—the one that meant she'd already made a decision and was here to inform me of it.

Behind her, Matias.

He didn't look at me. His eyes were fixed somewhere near the floor, hands shoved deep in his coat pockets. He looked like a man waiting for a bus he didn't want to catch.

"Talia," Mrs. Castillo said. Not a greeting. A statement.

I stepped back. "Come in. Is everything okay?"

She didn't move. "We won't be staying."

Something cold slid down my spine. I looked past her at Matias again. He still wouldn't meet my eyes.

"The wedding is off," Mrs. Castillo said.

The words didn't land right. They felt like something I'd misheard, like a sentence in a language I almost understood but not quite.

"What?"

"Matias has accepted a position at the Institute for Strategic Policy Research in Washington." She said it the way you'd recite an address. Flat. Factual. "It's a significant opportunity. He'll be working directly with senior fellows on federal advisory projects."

I stared at her. Then at him.

He adjusted his collar. A tiny movement. His eyes stayed down.

"Okay," I said slowly. "That's—that's amazing. But I don't understand. We can figure out D.C. I can run the business from anywhere. We talked about this. If you got the job, we'd—"

"No." Mrs. Castillo's voice cut clean through mine. "You're not understanding me. The wedding is off. Matias needs to be with someone who complements his professional trajectory. Someone with the right credentials. You run a little Etsy shop, Talia. That's fine for you, but it's not a suitable match for someone in his position."

The air in the hallway felt thin.

"A little Etsy shop," I repeated.

She nodded. "I'm sure you've worked very hard. But this is about Matias's future. He needs a partner who moves in the same circles. Someone appropriate."

I looked at Matias again. Waited for him to say something. Anything.

He cleared his throat. Adjusted his collar again. Said nothing.

"Matias." My voice came out quieter than I meant it to. "Look at me."

He didn't.

Mrs. Castillo sighed like I was being difficult. "There's no point in dragging this out. Matias has already been seeing someone more suitable. Kenna Stewart. She's a junior analyst at the institute. They've been getting to know each other for a few weeks now. It's a much better fit."

The floor tilted.

"A few weeks," I said.

She waved her hand. "This is simply how life works, dear. People grow. Priorities shift. You'll understand someday."

I felt something sharp and bright rising in my chest, but my voice stayed level. "What about the deposits?"

"I'm sorry?"

"The twenty-five thousand dollars in non-refundable deposits I've already paid. The venue. The catering. The florist. The photographer. What about that?"

Mrs. Castillo's face didn't change. "That's unfortunate, but it's not our responsibility. You made those arrangements. These things happen."

"I made those arrangements for our wedding."

"And now there isn't a wedding." She adjusted her purse strap. "Consider it a life lesson, honey."

She turned. Matias turned with her, still silent, still looking at the floor.

They walked toward the elevator.

I stood in my doorway and watched them go. Matias pressed the button. The doors opened. They stepped inside.

He never looked back.

The doors closed.

I went back into my apartment and shut the door. The seating chart was still on the floor. Table assignments written in careful handwriting. His family on the left. Mine on the right. A dance floor in the middle where we were supposed to have our first dance to the song he'd picked.

I sat down on the couch.

The rehearsal dinner dress hung on the closet door. White silk. Simple and perfect. I'd imagined his face when he saw it.

I didn't cry.

I sat there for a long time, looking at the seating chart, the vendor contracts stacked on the coffee table, the binder with the timeline I'd built down to the minute.

Twenty-four hours passed.

I didn't call anyone. Didn't post anything. Didn't move except to drink water and stare at the wall.

The next morning, I made myself a pour-over coffee. Slow. Methodical. The way I always did. I sat down at my desk and opened my business dashboard.

Revenue: $847,000 year-to-date. Inventory: fully stocked. Q4 product launch: on schedule.

I pulled up my bank statements. Rent payments to Matias's landlord. Venmo transfers. The MacBook Pro I bought him in September. The car insurance I paid in October. The money I sent his mother for her dental work in August.

I opened a new spreadsheet.

I started adding it up.
