My Dying Husband Used Our Son to Ruin Me Chapter 1

I got home at eleven. The house was dark except for one lamp in the living room. It threw long shadows across the marble floor.

Colter sat in the armchair by the window. He didn't turn when I came in. Just sat there, hands gripping the armrests, shoulders hunched forward like he was bracing against something invisible.

I set my bag down. Took off my coat. Waited.

"Where is she?" His voice came out rough. Thin.

I didn't need to ask who. We'd had this conversation four times in the past two weeks. "I don't know, Colter."

"Liar." He turned his head. The lamplight caught the hollows under his cheekbones. Six months ago he'd been a hundred and eighty pounds of confidence in tailored suits. Now he looked like something the cancer was wearing. "You paid her off. You know exactly where she is."

My thumb found the inside of my left wrist. Pressed hard. "I don't."

"I'm dying, Valentina." He stood up too fast. Swayed. Caught himself on the chair. "I have maybe six months. Maybe less. And you won't even give me this one thing."

"I can't give you something I don't have."

"You drove her away!" His voice cracked. Sixteen years of marriage and I'd never heard him sound like that—raw and young and completely unmoored. "She loved me. We were supposed to—" He stopped. Breathed hard through his nose. "You couldn't stand it. You couldn't stand that I loved someone before you."

I looked at him. Really looked. At the man I'd spent sixteen years building an empire beside. The man whose strategies I'd drafted, whose investors I'd courted, whose household I'd run while he took meetings and credit and the spotlight. The man who was standing in our living room accusing me of destroying something that had never existed in the first place.

Something cold and clear settled in my chest. Like glass. Like certainty.

"I didn't drive anyone away," I said quietly. "She left because she wanted to. That's what people do when they're done with you."

His face twisted. "You don't know anything about what we had."

"No," I agreed. "I don't."

He stared at me. Waiting for me to say more. To defend myself or beg him to stop or break down so he could feel like this was a fight instead of what it actually was.

I didn't give him any of it.

He turned suddenly. Lurched toward the mantelpiece. His hand closed around the small gold locket sitting there—the one my mother had worn every day of my childhood, the one I'd kept in a box for eight years after she died before I could stand to look at it again.

"Colter." My voice came out flat. "Put it down."

He held it up to the light. Turned it over in his palm. "This is all you care about, isn't it? Your perfect dead mother and her perfect memory. You hold onto the past like it's a religion."

"Put. It. Down."

"You want to keep things from me?" His fingers tightened around it. "Fine. Let's see how it feels."

He threw it.

The locket hit the marble floor and shattered. The sound was small. Delicate. Final.

I stood very still.

Pieces of gold scattered across the white stone. The tiny photograph inside—my mother's face, younger than I'd ever known her—slid free and landed face-down three feet away.

Colter was breathing hard. Staring at me. Waiting for the reaction. The tears. The anger. Something he could use.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist until I felt the bone.

Then I walked forward. Stepped over the broken pieces. Walked past him like he wasn't there.

I went to my study. Closed the door. Sat down in the dark.

I didn't cry.

I sat there and felt the cold thing in my chest spread outward. Through my ribs. Down my spine. Into my hands.

After a while I heard him in the hallway. His uneven footsteps. The pause outside my door.

He didn't knock.

Eventually he went upstairs. I heard the bedroom door close.

I stayed in the dark.

---

In the morning, I got up at six. Made coffee. Let it go cold on the counter.

I went into the living room. Crouched down on the marble floor in my work clothes. Collected every fragment of gold I could find. The chain. The clasp. The tiny bent hinge. The photograph—creased now, but intact.

I put all of it in the small velvet pouch I used to keep earrings in. Pulled the drawstring tight. Set it in my bag.

Colter didn't come downstairs.

At the office, I set the pouch on my desk. Looked at it for a long time.

Then I opened my sketchbook. Drew a locket broken cleanly in two—the halves separated, but the chain still whole between them.

I didn't know why I was drawing it. Just that I needed to.

I closed the sketchbook. Pulled up the files for my promotion presentation. Three weeks away. Three months of work. The biggest pitch of my career.

I straightened my spine. Started reviewing the slides.

My phone buzzed at four. Colter's oncologist. Dr. Mehta.

*He's booked a flight to Aspen. Against my explicit orders. Tried to talk him out of it. He won't listen. Thought you should know.*

I stared at the text.

Then I looked out the window. The city was bright and indifferent. Traffic moved. People walked. The world continued.

I didn't call Colter. Didn't text. Didn't chase.

I went home that evening. Made tea. Sat by the window with the cup going cold in my hands.

Waited.
