After he left, I wheeled myself out.
The revocation process was very quick. After that was done, I went to the law firm where my best friend, Olivia Davis, worked at.
When she heard what I wanted to do, Olivia’s eyes widened in shock. “You want to get a divorce? Why? Everyone knows that Joe dotes on you very much!”
I smiled bitterly. “What if he only treats me well because he’s the one who made me lose my leg?”
Olivia’s face turned pale. “What do you mean?”
I told Olivia everything I had overheard yesterday. She froze and then teared up. “These monsters! They must pay for what they did to you! If you need any help, just tell me!”
I hugged her. “Thank you.”
On the way to the hospital, I saw the latest news article.
[The Genius Ballet Dancer, Gabriella, Has Returned To The Country.]
I clicked on the article and saw that Gabriella had a performance in the city theater hall at night.
I smiled mockingly.
Joe would probably make up another excuse to watch her performance.
At the hospital, by using my title as Joe’s wife, I successfully retrieved my hospital records from five years ago, as well as the on-site incident report regarding the first-aid rescue.
When I left, I heard the nurses discussing something. I heard a mention of Joe’s name.
“She’s so beautiful and elegant!”
“Is she Joe’s wife?”
“I heard Joe loves his wife very much. Do you see how he looks at his wife? His eyes are always filled with love!”
Following their gaze, I saw Gabriella.
She was wearing a tight dress, and her hair was tied up in a neat bun. She was leaning against Joe’s desk.
The two of them were deep in conversation. Joe, who was usually calm, was already blushing. He stared at Gabriella with barely restrained affection.
I wheeled myself closer.
I heard Joe ask her, “How have you been? Does he treat you well?”
Gabriella nodded. “He treats me very well.”
A hint of disappointment flashed across Joe’s face. “That’s good…”
I felt disgusted. When I was about to leave, a rushing nurse bumped into my wheelchair.
“I’m sorry!”
When the nurse apologized to me, Gabriella looked up and saw me.
“Fiona? Is that you? It is! Are you here to look for Joe?”
Joe looked somewhat guilty. “Fiona, why are you here? Gabriella had an old injury on her ankle. She was looking for me to seek medical advice. Please don’t misunderstand.”
I nodded graciously. I took out a key and passed it to Joe. “Don’t worry. I didn’t misunderstand anything. You didn’t bring your key, so I came to drop it here.”
Gabriella walked toward me in her heels. “It’s been so long! It’s been five years since your accident, right?”
She looked down at me as her gaze shifted from my face to my leg.
“What a… tragedy.”
She leaned in close to whisper, so only I could hear her.
“Fiona, how does it feel to be crippled?
“Since you wanted to snatch what’s mine, you had to pay for it.”
I did not want to say anything to her, but she was not willing to let me go. “Fiona, I have a show tonight. Do come and watch! Even though you can no longer dance, you can still clap for me in the audience.”
She grabbed my hand and did not let go. I could not free myself. From the corner of my eye, I saw Joe look up.
I had a bad feeling about this.
Just when I was about to shout for Joe, she suddenly fell to the floor.
“Fiona, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to anger you…”
Gabriella looked like she had been mistreated.
Joe immediately rushed forward and pulled Gabriella into his arms. “Are you alright?”
Then, he glared at me. “Fiona, why are you doing this? Gabriella has a performance later tonight. What if she hurts her legs? Don’t you know how important legs are to a ballet dancer?”
‘Don’t you know how important legs are to a ballet dancer?’ I felt my blood turn cold as those words rang in my mind.
Were my legs less important than Gabriella’s?
“I didn’t do anything.”
I struggled to stand up to explain myself.
Gabriella was on the verge of tears. “It’s all my fault. I invited Fiona to my performance just now. Maybe I triggered her…”
Joe frowned and glanced at me. “You… disappoint me.”
“I really didn’t do anything!” I instinctively grabbed Joe’s sleeve, but he pushed me aside.
I stumbled and fell to the floor. My right prosthetic leg came off from the impact.
“Ahh! That’s so scary!”
“Her right leg is fake! No wonder she’s in a wheelchair!”
“She’s so pretty. What a shame she’s a cripple and evil too!”
Everyone pointed at me accusingly, but Joe was not paying attention at all.
He carried Gabriella in his arms and placed her on the hospital bed, so he could carefully examine her supposed injuries.
He did not even spare me a glance.
I was left alone outside his office. I felt very upset as I struggled to get up on my own.
Finally, a nurse, who was passing by, helped me up and put my prosthetic back on.
Joe was not even faking it anymore.
The supposed love that was only for me in the past five years had vanished.
After I got home, I started to pack my things.
I packed all the things that reminded me of Joe and left them in the trash.
I removed and tore the wedding photo that had previously hung in our living room.
It was evening when I received a text message from Joe.
[Fiona, it was my fault today. I’m sorry. I have work tonight, so I can’t have dinner with you. I’ll make it up to you tomorrow.]
‘Work?’ I sneered.
I bet he was attending Gabriella’s performance.
I did not reply. Instead, I signed the divorce papers.
I took out the photocopies of my records that I had gotten from the hospital that day. Every one of them detailed the fact that I had only suffered a minor fracture in my right leg five years ago. If it had been treated correctly, I would not even have had any long-term side effects.
It definitely did not require an amputation.
I sent these photocopied documents and the divorce papers to Joe’s hospital.
With my luggage in tow, I left the house that I lived in for five years.
When I landed in a foreign country, I received a confirmation of my identity revocation.
...
Joe had just reached his office.
He did not return home after watching the performance and attending the after-party. He had to figure out an explanation for Fiona.
He had already bought a gift and made a reservation at a restaurant for their fifth wedding anniversary.
Joe thought that Fiona was very easily comforted. He would apologize to her at night, and she would no longer be mad at him.
His thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door. A nurse passed him a file.
