My Alpha Mate Chose His Mistress Over Our Daughter Chapter 1

The barricade hit Ellie at 2:47 in the afternoon.

I know the exact time because I was checking my phone when the wood cracked. The sound was wrong—too loud, splintering in a way that made my wolf stir before my brain caught up. I looked up. The heavy training barricade, knocked loose by a warrior's misdirected strike, was already falling. Ellie stood directly in its path, Greystone clutched to her chest, her mouth open in a shape that hadn't yet become a scream.

I was running before it hit her. Before her small body crumpled. Before the dust settled and the ceremonial grounds went silent in that terrible way that means something has gone very, very wrong.

She didn't make a sound when she fell. That was worse than screaming.

I dropped to my knees in the dirt beside her, my hands going to her side where blood was already soaking through her dress. Her ribs felt wrong under my palms—too soft, too yielding. Her breathing was shallow and fast. Her eyes found mine, wide and frightened, and I forced my voice steady.

"I've got you, baby. Mama's got you."

I opened the mate bond mind-link. Holden's presence flared to life on the other end—alert, active, somewhere across the territory. Relief flooded through me for half a second. He would come. He had to come.

"Holden." My voice through the bond was raw. "Ellie's hurt. The training barricade—she's bleeding, her ribs are broken, I need you here now—"

There was a pause. Long enough that I felt it like a physical weight.

Then his voice came back through the link, flat and faintly annoyed. "Let the Healer handle it. That's what she's there for."

The connection closed.

I stared down at my daughter's blood on my hands. At her small face going paler. At Greystone lying in the dirt beside her, one button eye staring up at the sky.

Something in my chest moved. Not my wolf—not yet—but something deeper. Something that had been holding very still for a very long time.

I pressed my right thumb into the center of my left palm. Held it there for three seconds. Then I slid my arms under Ellie's body, lifted her as carefully as I could, and carried her to Maren's healing den myself.

The pack warriors watched me walk past. No one offered to help.

---

Maren worked through the night. I sat in the corner of the sterile recovery den and watched her hands move—precise, unhurried, saving my daughter's life while Holden did not answer a single one of my calls.

By dawn, Ellie was breathing steadily. Maren had moved her into the pack's only sterile recovery room, the one kept free of environmental contaminants for critical cases. An IV line ran into Ellie's small wrist. Greystone was tucked under her arm, one ear flattened from being clutched too hard.

Maren met my eyes across the room. She didn't say anything. She didn't need to.

I opened my journal—the worn leather one I'd kept for five years—and wrote the date. The time of the injury. The exact wording of Holden's response through the bond. The names of the four warriors who had watched me carry Ellie alone.

Then I wrote: *He chose not to come.*

My hand was steady.

---

Holden arrived midmorning. I heard his voice in the hallway before I saw him—low, warm, the tone he used when he wanted to be charming.

He wasn't alone.

I stood in the doorway of Ellie's recovery room and watched him greet Giselle Fox at the entrance to the healing wing. She was dressed in soft gray, her dark hair loose, Caspian standing beside her looking cold in a jacket too thin for the weather. Holden's hand touched the small of her back. Just briefly. Just enough.

He didn't look toward Ellie's room first.

He looked at Giselle.

Something in my chest moved again. Bigger this time. A low, furious vibration pressing against the inside of my ribs, trying to get out.

I pressed my thumb into my palm. I did not move. I watched.

Giselle saw me and smiled. It was a gentle smile, full of concern. "Sloane," she said softly. "I heard about Ellie. I wanted to bring Caspian to visit. He's been so worried."

Caspian looked up at his mother. He didn't look worried. He looked tired.

Holden finally turned toward me. His expression was neutral, unreadable. "How is she?"

"Stable," I said. My voice came out even. "Maren says she'll recover."

"Good." He nodded once, then gestured toward Giselle. "I told Giselle she could bring Caspian in for a few minutes. It's important for the pups to support each other."

I looked at my mate. At the man who had hung up on me while our daughter bled. At the hand that had touched another woman's back before checking on his own child.

"Of course," I said.

I stepped aside and let them into my daughter's sterile recovery room.

Behind me, through the open door, I heard Ellie's small voice. Sleepy, confused.

"Mama?"

I turned back toward her. Giselle was already inside, Caspian trailing behind her. Holden stood in the hallway, checking his phone.

I walked back to my daughter's bedside and took her hand.

And I started counting.
