Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the Crescent Moon Pack house glittered with crystal chandeliers and silver decorations. I smoothed down the front of my ceremonial white dress—the one I'd spent weeks selecting for this moment. Tonight was supposed to be everything I'd waited five years for.

"Luna Elowyn," I whispered to myself, practicing the title I'd soon bear. "Finally."

My wolf, Aria, stirred inside me. *We deserve this. We've earned this.*

I took a deep breath and stepped through the massive oak doors. The crowd parted as I entered, and I felt their eyes upon me—some sympathetic, others curious, a few even hopeful. Five years as Damien's fated mate without an official marking ceremony had left the pack unsettled. Tonight, that would finally change.

But as I made my way toward the high table where Damien sat in his Alpha throne, my steps faltered. Something was wrong.

Aviana Wheeler stood beside him.

She wore a flowing emerald gown that highlighted her curves, her golden hair cascading down her back in perfect waves. Her hand rested possessively on the back of Damien's chair, and her lips curved into a smile that didn't reach her eyes.

"Elowyn," Damien nodded, his expression unreadable. "You're late."

I swallowed hard, forcing myself to continue forward. "I apologize, Alpha. I wanted everything to be perfect."

Aviana's laugh tinkled like breaking glass. "Oh, it already is perfect."

The pack members shifted uncomfortably, their confusion evident. This wasn't how a Luna Presentation was supposed to begin.

"Damien," I whispered, using our mind-link. "What's happening? Why is she here?"

His response was cold, distant. *Be patient, Elowyn. All will be explained.*

Before I could respond, Aviana stepped forward and tapped on the microphone at the center of the high table.

"Attention, everyone," she announced, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "I have an exciting announcement to make."

The room fell silent. I froze, my heart pounding painfully against my ribs.

"As many of you know," Aviana continued, her eyes finding mine across the room, "Damien and I have been... close... for many years."

My stomach twisted. Close didn't begin to describe their relationship.

"And now," she placed her hand dramatically over her stomach, "I'm pleased to announce that I'm carrying Alpha Damien's heir!"

The room erupted in gasps and murmurs. My vision blurred, the edges darkening as if I might faint.

*No,* Aria growled inside me. *This can't be happening.*

I stumbled forward, my legs barely supporting me. "That's not possible," I said, my voice cracking. "Damien, tell them it's not true."

Damien's eyes flashed amber as his wolf surfaced. The air in the room thickened with his Alpha aura.

"Enough," he commanded, his Alpha tone vibrating through my bones.

My knees buckled instantly. The weight of his command crushed down on me, forcing me to the floor. Pain lanced through my chest as Aria fought against the compulsion.

"Don't cause a scene," Damien continued coldly, looking down at me from his throne. "Accept Aviana's new status."

The pack watched in horrified silence as their Alpha forced his fated mate to her knees. No one moved to help me. No one dared.

"Damien," I gasped, tears streaming down my face. "How could you?"

Aviana's laughter echoed through the hall. "Oh, darling. Did you really think he would choose you? After everything?"

Something inside me snapped. Five years of waiting, of enduring her "pranks," of being pushed aside and dismissed—it all crystallized into a single moment of clarity.

I reached for the nearest table and grabbed a glass of ceremonial wine—the one laced with wolfsbane meant to symbolize the bitter trials of love.

With strength I didn't know I possessed, I stood up despite Damien's command and threw the contents directly into Aviana's smug face.

She screamed as the wolfsbane burned her skin, but I barely heard it over the roaring in my ears.

"Elowyn!" Damien growled, his Alpha tone intensifying.

But something had changed inside me. The pain of his command was still there, but I could fight it now.

I turned to face him, my body trembling with the effort to remain standing.

"I've spent five years waiting for you to honor our bond," I said, my voice shaking but clear. "Five years enduring her cruelty while you looked the other way."

Damien stood, his aura pulsing dangerously. "You don't understand what's happening."

"I understand perfectly," I replied, stepping closer despite the agony of fighting his command. "And I'm done."

I took a deep breath, feeling Aria surge forward in support.

"I, Elowyn Hamilton," I began, the ancient rejection words rising to my lips as if I'd always known them, "reject you, Alpha Damien Morgan, as my fated mate."

The pain was immediate and overwhelming—like having my soul torn in half. But beneath it was something else: a fierce, liberating anger.

Without waiting for his response, I turned and fled the banquet hall, leaving behind the shattered remains of what should have been my future.

Chapter 2

I barely made it to the pack clinic before Damien's hand clamped around my wrist, yanking me backward with such force that I stumbled against the wall. My chest heaved with sobs, the rejection ritual still burning through my veins like acid.

"You think you can just walk away?" he snarled, his amber eyes blazing with fury. "After what you did?"

I tried to pull free, but his grip tightened. "Let me go, Damien."

"Never." The word hung between us, heavy with five years of broken promises.

He dragged me through the clinic doors, his massive frame blocking any escape route. The antiseptic smell made my stomach turn, reminding me of all the times I'd been treated here after Aviana's "pranks."

"Everyone's watching," I hissed, aware of the staff and patients staring at us.

"Let them watch," he replied coldly. "You've embarrassed me for the last time."

The clinic receptionist, a young Delta named Lily, stepped forward hesitantly. "Alpha, perhaps—"

"Perhaps nothing," Damien cut her off with a glare. "I need space. Now."

Lily retreated quickly, and the other wolves followed suit, leaving us alone in the waiting area. Damien released my wrist only to grasp my shoulders, his touch bruising.

"Take it back," he demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous growl. "The rejection. Take it back now."

Aria whimpered inside me, the pain of the severed bond still raw. But something else was rising—anger, hot and clarifying.

"No," I said, meeting his gaze steadily.

Before Damien could respond, the clinic door swung open. Aviana swept in, her face partially red and blistered from the wolfsbane wine. Despite her injuries, her eyes gleamed with triumph.

"Darling," she cooed to Damien, completely ignoring my presence. "I thought we might need a peace offering."

She reached into her designer purse and withdrew something long and slender, wrapped in black leather. With theatrical flourish, she unwrapped it—a training cane with a silver tip gleaming wickedly under the fluorescent lights.

My blood turned to ice.

"Do you remember this?" Aviana asked softly, running her fingers along the silver tip. "I had it specially made. Just for you, Elowyn."

The room tilted sideways as memories crashed over me—high school hallways, ranked wolves circling me, the silver-tipped canes they used to test if I was truly "wolfless." The burn of silver against my skin, the laughter...

"No," I whispered, my body freezing in place. "No, no, no..."

Aviana's lips curved into a cruel smile as she extended the cane toward me. "Don't you want to thank me?"

I couldn't breathe. Couldn't move. The silver tip seemed to grow larger, more menacing with each passing second.

"Elowyn?" Damien's voice sounded distant. "What's wrong with you?"

I looked up at him, silently pleading for understanding or protection—anything.

Instead, he sighed impatiently. "Aviana is trying to make peace. Stop acting so weak."

"She's triggering me," I managed to gasp. "The silver—you know what it does to me."

Damien's expression hardened. "You're a wolf now. You're stronger than this."

But I wasn't stronger. Not here, not now, not with the mate bond still bleeding inside me and silver gleaming inches from my face.

"Take it," Aviana insisted, thrusting the cane closer.

I flinched backward, my spine hitting the wall. "Please, don't."

"Enough!" Damien snapped, grabbing the cane from Aviana's hand. "This is ridiculous."

For one hopeful moment, I thought he'd finally understood. Finally chosen me.

Instead, he handed the cane back to Aviana with a reassuring smile. "Maybe another time."

They left me there, trembling against the wall, while they whispered together by the door. Their voices carried just enough for me to hear.

"She'll come around," Damien murmured. "The bond is still there. She can't resist it forever."

Aviana's laugh was like shattered glass. "And if she continues to be difficult?"

"Then we'll deal with her properly," he replied, his tone chilling me to the bone.

---

Midnight found me slipping through the shadows of the pack house, my heart pounding against my ribs. The clinic was quiet now, most staff gone home for the night. Only the security system remained—and I knew exactly how to bypass it.

My fingers flew over the keyboard at the reception desk, accessing the network through a backdoor I'd discovered months ago. The screen glowed blue in the darkness as I navigated deeper into the system.

"Come on," I whispered, sweat beading on my forehead. "Just a little further."

The Pack Healer's private database required additional authentication, but I'd been watching Marcus Stone enter his credentials for weeks. Four more keystrokes and I was in.

File after file scrolled past as I searched for Damien's medical records. And then—

"There you are," I breathed, opening the most recent examination report.

My eyes widened as I read the diagnosis: severe oligospermia, sperm count virtually nonexistent, wolf practically sterile.

The room spun around me as realization dawned. Aviana was lying. She had to be.

But if she wasn't carrying Damien's child... whose was she carrying?

And why was Damien pretending to believe her?

Chapter 3

The fluorescent lights of the pack clinic flickered above me as my fingers danced across the keyboard. The midnight silence wrapped around me like a cloak, the only sound the soft clicking of keys and my racing heartbeat.

"Just a little deeper," I whispered to myself, sweat beading on my forehead as I navigated through the encrypted files.

Marcus Stone, our Pack Healer, was meticulous about security—but he'd never anticipated someone like me. Someone with nothing left to lose.

I'd been watching him enter his credentials for weeks now. Four more keystrokes and—

"Bingo," I breathed as the screen flashed green.

The Pack Healer's private database stretched before me like a digital treasure trove. I scrolled past routine checkups and minor injuries until I found what I was looking for.

"Alpha Damien Morgan - Confidential Medical Examination."

My fingers trembled as I clicked on the file. The document that opened before me was stamped with the highest classification: "EYES ONLY - ALPHA COMMAND."

"This can't be right," I whispered, scanning the contents.

But the diagnosis was unmistakable:

"Patient exhibits severe oligospermia with sperm count virtually nonexistent. Wolf appears to be functionally sterile."

The room spun around me as the implications hit like physical blows.

"Aviana's baby..." I whispered, my voice breaking in the empty clinic. "It can't be his."

Aria stirred inside me, her presence a comforting warmth against the ice flooding my veins. *We knew something was wrong. This confirms it.*

"But why would she lie?" I asked aloud, though I already knew the answer.

Power. Position. The Luna title she'd coveted for so long.

I needed more than just the medical report. I needed to hear it for myself.

---

The pack hospital's corridors were eerily quiet as I slipped through them an hour later. I'd spent precious minutes masking my scent—a skill I'd perfected in high school when hiding from bullies became a matter of survival.

A mixture of crushed herbs and a special oil from the pack's apothecary created a neutralizing barrier around my natural scent. As long as I didn't get too close or sweat excessively, I was effectively invisible to werewolf noses.

I spotted Aviana's golden hair through the glass doors of the VIP maternity ward. She was alone, her hand resting protectively over her still-flat stomach as she spoke to a nurse.

"The Alpha will be here shortly," she was saying, her voice carrying that false sweetness I'd grown to despise. "I'll be in the private consultation room."

Perfect.

I slipped into an empty room adjacent to the consultation room, leaving the door cracked just enough to hear their voices when they entered.

"Remember," I whispered to myself, pressing my palm against my racing heart. "Just listen. Don't react."

Minutes later, I heard Damien's heavy footsteps approaching. My body tensed involuntarily—the mate bond, even rejected, still pulled at something deep inside me.

"Is everything prepared?" His voice was low, intimate in a way that made my stomach twist.

"Of course," Aviana replied, her tone syrupy sweet. "I told them we needed privacy for... delicate matters."

Their laughter mingled as they entered the consultation room. I held my breath, straining to hear every word.

"I've been thinking about what you said," Damien's voice came through clearly now. "About Elowyn."

My heart stopped.

"What about her?" Aviana asked, though I could hear the smile in her voice.

"It's time I stopped pretending," Damien said, his voice hardening. "The bond is nothing but biology. I've fulfilled my obligation by keeping her around this long."

Aria whimpered inside me, the pain of his words cutting deeper than any physical wound.

"And now?" Aviana pressed, her voice eager.

"Now I sever it completely," Damien replied. "You're my choice, Aviana. You always have been."

The silence that followed was filled with unspoken promises that shattered what little hope I had left.

"I only kept her around out of duty," Damien continued, his voice dropping lower. "The Moon Goddess's whim means nothing compared to what I want. What we want."

"And the pack?" Aviana asked.

"They'll accept it," he said confidently. "They always do."

I pressed my hand against my mouth to stifle the sob building in my throat. Five years of waiting, of enduring, of believing—all for nothing.

"I've played the dutiful Alpha long enough," Damien said, his voice cold and final. "It's time I chose my own destiny."

I backed away from the door, my legs trembling beneath me. The truth was worse than anything I could have imagined.

He had never intended to honor our bond.

He had never truly wanted me at all.

As I stumbled into the hallway, one thought crystallized in my mind with perfect clarity: This wasn't just about rejection anymore.

This was war.
