Mother-in-Law Got Cancer — I Walked Away Chapter 1

The day my mother-in-law was diagnosed with stomach cancer, the whole family pressured my mom to sell her house to save her life.

“She’s alone anyway—what does it matter where she lives?”

“Yeah, what’s more important, money or a life?”

Afraid of making things difficult for me, my mom quietly sold her house and moved back into our leaking old farmhouse in rural Montana.

On a stormy night, the old house collapsed. Covered in injuries, she dragged herself to my front door and knocked.

My in-laws locked the door and sneered, “You’re covered in blood—bad luck!”

She didn’t make it to the hospital in time and died right outside my home.

I set the house on fire, taking those scumbags with me.

When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the day I’d just finished my physical exam.

This time, I told them first—my mom had stomach cancer.

The day my husband finally got his wish and divorced me, my mother-in-law got a call from the hospital.

In my last life, right after Helen Carter’s diagnosis, Michael Carter’s family had forced my mom to sell her house to pay for her treatment.

Mom didn’t want me caught in the middle, so she transferred the money straight to Michael.

The surgery was expensive, but Helen had employer-provided health insurance that could reimburse a large portion.

Almost all the proceeds from the house sale went to Michael, covering the surgery and various expenses.

I kept thinking that once the insurance reimbursement came through, I could at least get a portion back—enough for my mom to rent a slightly better place.

Months later, the reimbursement finally arrived—over $15,000.

The money was deposited directly into Helen’s medical account.

I cautiously brought it up:

“Mom, the insurance reimbursement came through. You see, my mom covered the full surgery cost upfront—shouldn’t this reimbursement…”

“What?” Helen’s face immediately darkened.

“This money was reimbursed for my medical expenses! Of course it’s ours—to use for follow-up visits, supplements, and recovery. Your mom selling her house saved my life, and we’re grateful, but this reimbursement is a completely separate matter!”

“Separate?” I could hardly believe my ears.

“If my mom hadn’t sold her house, the surgery couldn’t have even happened! The insurance reimbursed actual medical expenses—without that upfront payment, there’d be nothing to reimburse!”

“That’s some nerve you’ve got!” Emily Carter’s sharp voice cut in.

“Sis-in-law, why are you so petty? Money, money, money! Can you put a price on my mom’s life? This reimbursement is government policy meant to compensate my mom! What’s it got to do with your mom? Or do you plan to take my mom’s life-saving money for yourself?”

I was shaking with rage.

“Enough, Grace,” Robert Carter interrupted. “Don’t bring this up again. This money stays for your mother-in-law’s care. No one touches it.”

“Then bring my mom here to live with us!”

I turned to Michael, hoping he’d say something fair.

He avoided my gaze and muttered, “Grace, now’s really not the time. Mom’s health comes first. Your mom… maybe just visit her more, and ask her to wait a little longer?”

That’s when I knew—they were all heartless.

I wanted to argue, but my mom stopped me.

“Sweetheart, don’t be upset. I’m old and don’t need much money. Back home, I can grow vegetables and raise a few chickens.”

I watched her leave with tears in my eyes. I never imagined that just days later, on another stormy night, the old farmhouse would collapse.

Covered in wounds, she knocked on my door again.

Michael locked the bedroom door and wouldn’t let me out.

She died outside my home before she could get to a hospital.

I set the house on fire, ending it with those scumbags.

When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the day I’d just had my physical.

Remembering every detail from my previous life, I picked up my phone and called a highly reputable local real estate agency.
