Chapter 1

I stared at my reflection in the full-length mirror, smoothing down the white ceremonial dress for the third time. The delicate silver embroidery along the neckline caught the light as I moved, shimmering like moonlight on water. My hands trembled slightly as I fastened the last silver clasp.

"Are you ready, Luna?" Elena asked from the doorway, her eyes bright with anticipation. "The pack is already gathering."

"I think so," I replied, taking a deep breath. Three years. Three years of waiting for this moment, for Giovanni to finally complete our mate ceremony and make me his Luna in truth as well as name.

My wolf, Sarah, stirred within me. *He'll come through this time,* she whispered. *He has to.*

I wanted to believe her. I'd wanted to believe every time.

The ceremonial hall was decorated with silver lanterns and white flowers, pack members already seated in neat rows. I could feel their eyes on me as I walked down the center aisle, my head held high despite the whispers that followed in my wake.

"The Alpha hasn't arrived yet."

"This is the third time..."

"Poor Beta Cecilia..."

I kept my expression neutral, though each whisper cut like a knife. As Beta of the Silver Moon Pack, I'd earned my position through skill and dedication, not just because I was Giovanni's mate. Yet here I stood, waiting once again for an Alpha who couldn't seem to prioritize his own mate ceremony.

"Luna Cecilia," Derek, our head of security, approached with a grim expression. "Alpha Giovanni has sent word."

My heart sank before he even finished speaking.

"He says there's urgent pack business at the borders that requires his immediate attention. The ceremony is... postponed."

The hall fell silent. I felt dozens of eyes boring into my back, waiting for my reaction. Three years of dignity couldn't crumble now.

"Thank you, Derek," I said evenly. "Please inform the pack that we'll reschedule when Alpha Giovanni's schedule permits."

As the hall emptied, Elena appeared at my side. "Cecilia, this is unacceptable. Even for an Alpha—"

"I need to change," I cut her off, my voice tight. "And then I need to check something."

Sarah growled within me. *Follow his scent. We deserve the truth.*

I slipped into my jeans and boots, ignoring Elena's concerned protests. If Giovanni was truly at the borders handling pack business, I would find him there.

The forest was quiet as I tracked his scent, fresh and unmistakable. My wolf guided me forward, her anger fueling my determination. The scent grew stronger as I approached the northern border of our territory.

Then I heard it—laughter. Soft, feminine laughter followed by a deeper chuckle I knew all too well.

I moved silently between the trees until I had a clear view of the ancient oak that marked our territorial boundary. My breath caught in my throat.

Giovanni stood with his back against the tree trunk, his powerful arms wrapped around a petite blonde woman. Aileen Miller—a she-wolf who'd joined our pack six months ago. Their bodies were pressed together intimately, his lips claiming hers in a passionate kiss that spoke of familiarity rather than novelty.

"He canceled again, didn't he?" Aileen murmured against his mouth, her fingers tracing patterns on his chest. "Poor little Luna Cecilia."

"Pack business," Giovanni replied smoothly, the same excuse he'd given me. "She'll understand."

*Like hell I will,* Sarah snarled within me.

I stepped forward, unable to contain myself any longer. "Is this your urgent pack business, Alpha?"

They sprang apart, Giovanni's expression shifting from shock to anger in an instant. Aileen's lips curved into a satisfied smirk behind his back.

"Cecilia," Giovanni growled, "what are you doing here?"

I opened our mind-link, needing to hear his thoughts as well as his words. "I'm supposed to be your Luna today. Instead, I found you here with her."

"You're spying on me?" His mental voice was cold with fury. "I don't have time for your paranoid delusions."

"Paranoid?" I stepped closer, my Beta authority lending strength to my voice. "Explain this, Giovanni. Explain why you're kissing another woman while your mate waits in her ceremonial dress."

"You don't question me!" he roared, his Alpha aura flaring dangerously. "I am your Alpha before I am your mate. You forget yourself, Beta Cecilia."

Aileen's smirk widened as she pressed herself against Giovanni's back protectively. "She's clearly unstable, Gio. Maybe she needs help."

Giovanni's eyes flashed dangerously. "If you continue to stalk me and undermine my authority, I'll have no choice but to strip you of your Beta position. Is that clear?"

Sarah howled with rage inside me, but I kept my face impassive. "Crystal clear, Alpha."

As I turned to leave, Aileen's triumphant gaze followed me, and something cold and determined settled in my chest. This wasn't over. Not by a long shot.

Chapter 2

The evening shadows stretched across the pack house as I sat in my office, reviewing territory reports with a headache pounding behind my eyes. I'd spent the afternoon in a patrol meeting, trying to maintain my composure while pack members exchanged pitying glances. The humiliation of the canceled ceremony still clung to me like a second skin.

A commotion in the hallway pulled me from my thoughts. Raised voices, then a feminine sob that seemed to echo through the corridors.

"He was going to kill me, Gio! I've never been so scared!"

I recognized that voice instantly. Aileen. Setting down my pen, I moved to the door, my wolf stirring restlessly within me.

Sarah growled. *She's lying.*

The main hall was already gathering pack members, drawn by the drama unfolding at the center. Aileen stood with her face buried against Giovanni's chest, her shoulders shaking with theatrical sobs. Her blonde hair cascaded over his arm as he held her protectively.

"What happened?" Giovanni demanded, his voice carrying that Alpha authority that made everyone straighten. His eyes scanned the crowd, finally landing on me as I descended the stairs.

"She needs to tell you," Aileen whimpered, looking up with perfectly timed tears streaming down her cheeks. "Some of your pack members... they cornered me by the eastern cabins. They said I didn't belong here... that I was trying to take someone's place."

Giovanni's expression darkened as he looked around the gathering crowd. "Who dared threaten a member of this pack?"

I stepped forward, keeping my voice steady. "Perhaps if you asked why they might feel that way—"

"Are you defending them?" Giovanni cut me off, his eyes flashing dangerously.

"I'm suggesting there might be context—"

"No context justifies threats," Aileen interrupted, her voice trembling perfectly. "I just want to feel safe here."

Giovanni pulled her closer, his hand stroking her hair in a gesture so intimate it made my stomach twist. "You're safe now. I won't let anyone hurt you."

I watched as he comforted his chosen mate instead of addressing his true mate's pain. The message couldn't have been clearer to everyone watching: Aileen was under his protection. I was on my own.

---

The next morning, I arrived at the security office for our regular patrol briefing, only to find Derek already seated at the head of the table.

"Morning, Beta Cecilia," he said, looking uncomfortable. "Alpha Giovanni asked me to take over patrol duties effective immediately."

I froze in the doorway. "Excuse me?"

"He said you needed to focus on... personal matters." Derek couldn't meet my eyes. "I'm sorry, I thought you knew."

Sarah snarled within me. *He's stripping away our authority piece by piece.*

I maintained my composure as I turned to leave. "Thank you for letting me know, Derek."

In the corridor, I nearly collided with Elena.

"Did you hear?" she whispered, pulling me aside. "Giovanni's moved your strategy meeting with the neighboring packs to next week. Gamma James will be handling it instead."

"He can't just—"

"He's the Alpha," Elena reminded me gently. "And he's telling everyone you need time to... what did he say? 'Focus on personal growth.'"

By lunchtime, the pattern was unmistakable. Every Beta duty I'd carefully built over three years was being systematically reassigned. When I entered the pack dining hall, conversations hushed momentarily before resuming in forced casual tones.

At the head table sat Giovanni, with Aileen beside him in what should have been my seat. She wore a demure blue dress that matched his eyes perfectly.

"Ah, Cecilia," Giovanni called out, his voice carrying across the room. "I see you've heard about the new arrangements."

"New arrangements?" I kept my voice level despite Sarah's rage building inside me.

"For your benefit, of course." His smile didn't reach his eyes. "Beta Cecilia needs time to focus on personal matters. The pack will manage while you... recover."

Aileen placed her hand over his, her eyes wide with false concern. "We just want what's best for you, Cecilia."

---

By the end of the week, whispers followed me everywhere. Pack members who once greeted me with respect now averted their eyes or offered tight smiles.

"I heard she had a violent outburst in the training grounds," someone murmured as I passed.

"Alpha Giovanni's worried she's becoming unstable," another voice added.

I turned to confront them, but they scattered like startled birds. In the kitchen, I found Elena arguing with two younger pack members.

"She's not dangerous!" Elena insisted. "I've known Cecilia for years!"

"Then why is she acting so erratic?" one of them asked. "Aileen says she's been having episodes..."

My blood ran cold. Of course. Aileen.

I stepped into view, causing both younger wolves to shrink back. "Aileen says a lot of things that aren't true."

Later that night, I caught Aileen in the library, whispering to a group of female pack members. Her eyes met mine over their heads, and for just a moment, her mask slipped.

"Did you see how she looked at us?" she stage-whispered. "That's exactly what I'm talking about."

The women turned to stare at me with newfound wariness.

Sarah's voice was deadly calm within me. *This is war, Cecilia. And she just made it personal.*

Chapter 3

The pack dining hall buzzed with conversation as I took my seat at the Beta table, carefully avoiding the head table where Giovanni sat with Aileen by his side. The scent of roasted venison filled the air, but my appetite had vanished days ago.

"Pass the potatoes, please," Elena whispered, nudging me with her elbow.

I handed her the dish, my eyes scanning the room. Pack members were watching us—watching me—with that same mixture of pity and wariness I'd grown accustomed to.

"Attention, everyone," Giovanni's voice cut through the chatter as he stood. "Before we continue with our meal, I'd like to discuss the border patrol schedule."

My spine stiffened. That was my responsibility.

"Specifically," he continued, his eyes finding mine across the room, "the decision to reduce patrols along the eastern ridge."

Sarah growled within me. *That was a strategic decision. The eastern ridge is our strongest natural boundary.*

"I believe," Aileen's voice was soft but carried perfectly through the now-silent hall, "that such reckless choices could endanger pack safety."

All eyes turned to me. I set down my fork carefully.

"The eastern ridge has natural cliff formations that make it nearly impossible to scale," I explained, keeping my voice steady. "We've doubled patrols in the more vulnerable northern sector where three incursions occurred last month."

"Is that so?" Aileen tilted her head innocently. "Because I happen to know that rogues were spotted near the eastern boundary just yesterday."

Giovanni's expression darkened. "Why wasn't I informed of this?"

"Because it was a false report," I replied evenly. "Our scouts confirmed it was simply deer crossing the stream."

Aileen placed her hand on Giovanni's arm, her fingers curling possessively around his bicep. "Gio, I'm just concerned. What if it wasn't deer? What if rogues are using the east ridge because they know we've reduced protection there?"

"Perhaps," Giovanni said, his voice carrying that dangerous edge I'd come to recognize, "our Beta needs to reconsider her priorities."

The challenge hung in the air between us. I could feel pack members shifting uncomfortably in their seats.

"My security decisions are based on three years of border analysis," I said, meeting his gaze directly. "If you'd like to review the data—"

"I trust Aileen's instincts," Giovanni cut me off. "And her concern for pack safety."

Several pack members exchanged glances. This wasn't about border security—it was about undermining my authority.

"Of course," I said finally, my composure intact despite Sarah's rage building inside me. "I'll adjust the patrols accordingly."

Aileen's triumphant smile burned into my retinas as conversation slowly resumed around us.

---

Late that night, I sat alone in my office, the security console glowing softly in the darkness. Sleep had become elusive since discovering Giovanni's betrayal, and tonight was no exception.

"If you can't sleep," Sarah suggested within me, "then let's find something useful to do."

I pulled up the security system interface. "What did you have in mind?"

"Prove them wrong," she growled. "Show everyone that you're still the best Beta this pack has ever had."

My fingers hovered over the keyboard. "How?"

"Start with the security footage. If Aileen's been sneaking around..."

I nodded, navigating to the archive section. The pack house had cameras throughout the perimeter and in common areas—a system I'd personally installed when I first became Beta.

I began with yesterday's footage from the eastern border, where Aileen claimed to have seen rogues. The timestamp showed nothing unusual—just deer crossing the stream exactly as our scouts had reported.

But then I noticed something odd. The camera angle shifted slightly, as if someone had manually adjusted it.

"Someone doesn't want us seeing something," I murmured.

I scrolled through earlier footage, checking dates and times. The eastern border camera had been adjusted three times in the past week.

On impulse, I switched to the forest camera that overlooked the old hunting cabin—a rarely used structure at the edge of our territory.

The timestamp showed three days ago, just after sunset. The footage was grainy in the dim light, but unmistakable: Giovanni and Aileen emerging from the cabin, his hands possessively on her waist as they kissed passionately.

My heart clenched painfully, but I forced myself to continue watching.

"There's more," Sarah urged as I stared at the frozen image.

I scrolled through the archives methodically, finding recording after recording. Giovanni and Aileen in the abandoned training ground. In the forest clearing by the river. In the old storage building after midnight.

Each discovery was another knife twisting in my chest, but also another piece of evidence falling into place.

"They're not just having an affair," I whispered as I watched them meet in the storage building, Aileen handing Giovanni what looked like documents. "She's giving him something."

Sarah's voice was cold with fury. "Or taking something from him."

I leaned closer to the screen, my mind racing as the pieces began falling into place. The border patrol changes. The leaked information. The way Aileen always seemed to know exactly where Giovanni would be.

This wasn't just betrayal. This was something far more dangerous to the entire pack.

And I had the evidence to prove it.
