Chapter 4

I picked up the glass of cold water on the table and took a sip; a bitter taste rose on my tongue. Neither. Liam 's affair was with a girl named Vanessa who worked at a flower shop on the street corner. She was dark-skinned and thin, with a low ponytail, wearing a faded work dress. Standing in the crowd, she was as ordinary as a speck of dust.

That year, Liam was thirty years old and had already become a legend in the physics world, winning awards left and right, surrounded by various socialites and ladies. But suddenly he lost interest in all of that and instead became obsessed with growing flowers. He transformed his small yard into a garden, bringing home imported tulips, rare blue star flowers, and common sunflowers—anything he found interesting.

His most treasured possession was that patch of irises. The seeds were a gift from me on my eighteenth birthday. I had joked at the time, "These flowers are like you; they look ordinary, but they bloom exceptionally beautifully." He cherished those seeds, personally turning the soil, sowing them, and watering them. Every day, the first thing he did after getting home from get off work was to go to the garden to see them.

“Look,” he once said, holding my hand and pointing to the newly blooming irises, his eyes filled with fascination, “such an inconspicuous seed, under the careful cultivation of people, can bloom into such a beautiful flower. The process is so wonderful, it’s like…like polishing a dusty bead to a shine.”

I didn't understand what he meant at the time. I just thought the flowers were pretty and said with a smile, "Then I'll water the flowers with you every day from now on." But he frowned and said, "You don't understand."

Looking back now, I realize he didn't find the flowers interesting; he found the process of "cultivation" interesting. As for me, I'm no longer the person who could inspire his "desire to cultivate"—I'm too familiar, too complacent, like an old tree in a garden that has already taken its shape, devoid of any surprises.

Vanessa appeared at this time. She was a delivery girl for the florist. The first time she came to deliver flowers, she squatted in the garden, pointed to the irises and said to Liam , " Mr. Liam , you've grown these flowers very well, but you could try using leaf mold. It's more breathable and can extend the flowering period by half a month. Also, irises like a semi-shaded environment, so it's best to provide some shade when the midday sun is too strong."

Liam was stunned. "I've been with him for so many years, and I've never cared what kind of soil his flowers like or how much sunlight they need. I only know he likes them, so I water and fertilize them for him, but I've never thought to understand them. But Vanessa is different. She can describe the habits of every flower, and she can talk to him about everything from photosynthesis to genetic mutations in plants, chatting until late at night without stopping."

At first, I didn't pay much attention, just thinking he'd made a new friend who knew about flowers. Until one day, I came home from work and saw Vanessa squatting in the garden, with Liam standing behind her, holding a handkerchief and gently wiping the sweat from her forehead. The setting sun bathed them in a warm yellow glow, the scene as harmonious as a painting—it was how we used to be.

“ Liam , who is she?” I gripped the shopping basket tightly, my knuckles aching from the pressure.

He turned around and saw me. The gentleness on his face vanished instantly, replaced by his usual calm: " Vanessa works at the florist. She's here to help me look at the flowers."

"Does she need to get this close to see the peanuts? Do you need to wipe her sweat?" I walked closer, my gaze fixed on Vanessa . She hurriedly stood up, awkwardly wringing her hands. "Ms. Jane, I'm sorry, I..."

"Shut up!" I interrupted her, turning to Liam . "Have you forgotten what you said back then? You said you'd never leave me, that I was the most important person to you!"

Liam frowned even more, his tone tinged with impatience: " Clara , can you please stop being so unreasonable? Vanessa and I are just friends. She knows about flowers and can help me a lot."

"A friend?" I laughed, laughing until tears almost came out. "Does a friend need you to text her every day to let her know she's safe? Does she need you to take her to the flower market on weekends, even forgetting my birthday? Does she need you to give her another set of the iris seeds I gave her?"

I took my phone out of my bag, and on the screen was a chat history with him that I had accidentally seen. Vanessa said, "It's a bit cold today," and he immediately replied, "I'll bring you a coat." Vanessa said, "I want to see the stars," and he said, "When I'm done with this busy period, I'll take you to the observatory." The most striking one was the sentence he said, " Vanessa , I only feel alive when I'm with you."

Liam 's expression shifted, but he showed no remorse. Instead, he sighed, " Clara , we've been together for too many years. You're too familiar with me, so familiar that I find you boring. Vanessa is different. She's like a blank canvas, showing me endless possibilities. She understands my pursuits and my ideals. But what about you? Besides the mundane details of daily life, what can you talk to me about?"

"I don't understand your ideals?" I suddenly remembered that when he first started graduate school, he didn't have money to buy experimental equipment, and I worked three jobs to raise the money for him; when he stayed up all night writing his thesis, I got up every morning to cook him a midnight snack; when his supervisor questioned him, I stayed up with him in the lab all night after night. He had forgotten all of this.

“You only understand my life, not my soul.” Liam ’s words were like an ice pick, piercing my heart. “ Clara , we are no longer from the same world.”

That day, I stood in the garden all night, looking at the blooming irises, and suddenly felt a deep irony. Years ago, I gave him the seeds to tell him that we were like these flowers; if we worked together, we could bloom in our most beautiful form. But I never imagined that in the end, he would use those flowers to nourish someone else's love.

Lila was filled with righteous indignation. She grabbed the rolling pin on the table, ready to slam it down: "That Liam is such a scoundrel! Clara , why didn't you slap him back then? This kind of ungrateful bastard deserves to be ruined!"

I gently shook my head and opened the notebook in the wooden box. The first page was written in Liam 's handwriting, still carrying the naivety of youth: " Clara gave me a hand warmer today, the first gift I've ever received in my life. I will study hard, earn lots of money in the future, buy her the best things, and protect her forever."

Behind the writing was a crooked little figure drawing a hand leading another even smaller figure, with the words " Clara and me" written next to it.

My fingertips traced the words, and my eyes slowly welled up with tears. Back then , Liam truly wanted to protect me forever. But later, he flew too high, too far, leaving all those promises behind in the wind.

"And then?" Lila leaned closer, her voice softening. "You just divorced him like that?"

I closed my notebook and looked out the window. The sun was shining brightly, steam rose from the steamed bun shop, and children's laughter drifted from afar. "No," I paused, my voice a little hoarse, "I was the one who initiated the divorce, but before that, I went through something far more painful than the divorce itself—I got pregnant with his child, and then I fell down the stairs while he was on a date with Vanessa ."

Chapter 5

“ Liam is right, I love this feeling of ‘control’.” Vanessa squatted in front of the iris bushes, her fingertips gently brushing the petals, a shy yet proud smile blooming on her dark face. “Whether the flowers grow well or not depends entirely on how much care the gardener puts in. Look at this one, I watched over it every day when it was forming buds, afraid of insects and wind, taking better care of it than I would of myself—it’s blooming so beautifully, all thanks to me.”

Liam stood behind her, sunlight filtering through the leaves and falling softly on his face. He bent down and gently brushed the fallen leaves from Vanessa's hair, a natural and intimate gesture—a gesture that used to be reserved only for me. Back then, when he picked willow catkins from my hair, he would smile and say, " Clara's hair is soft, don't let these things get itchy." But now, the way he looked at Vanessa was more focused than when he looked at carefully cultivated flowers.

“With this kind of dedication, anything is possible.” Liam ’s voice carried a long-lost sense of admiration. “He’s much better than some people who just stand by and offer sarcastic remarks.”

My grip on the watering can tightened suddenly, and the icy water trickled down my fingers, soaking the backs of my feet. I stood at the garden gate, still holding the fertilizer I'd just bought— Liam had specifically asked me to buy it yesterday, saying the irises needed fertilizing. So he hadn't forgotten my kindness; he'd just transferred that kindness to someone else.

It was an autumn when irises were in full bloom. They met because of the flowers, and even more so because of my "soft heart," and gradually moved in together. From then on, Liam 's phone was full of flower orders. He wanted roses with dew on them, magnolias freshly picked in the early morning, and even lilies, which I was allergic to, were brought home by him. He said, " Vanessa said the scent of lilies can calm the mind," completely forgetting how I had broken out in rashes and was bedridden the last time I came into contact with lilies.

The villa's terrace, living room, and even my study were filled with all sorts of flowers, the fragrance so strong it was cloying, keeping me awake at night. Meanwhile, Liam and Vanessa chatted and laughed across these flowers, discussing everything from flower care to physics formulas, from childhood anecdotes to future dreams, their conversation as harmonious as a couple who had been together for over a decade.

The turning point came one weekend evening. Liam suddenly pulled me down to sit, his expression serious yet with an undeniable insistence: " Clara , I want to sponsor Vanessa's education. She's only seventeen, and her problem-solving skills are clearer than many undergraduates. It would be such a waste for her to drop out."

Vanessa stood beside him, nervously picking at the calluses on her palms—the result of years of carrying flowers and doing odd jobs. She raised her dark face, her eyes brimming with tears, and looked at me timidly: " Sister Clara , I... I didn't mean to trouble you. After my mother's car accident, my family was burdened with debt, and I had no choice but to drop out of school. If you're willing to help me, I promise I'll study hard and pay you back when I earn money. I'll remember your kindness for the rest of my life."

Her eyes were so much like eight-year-old Liam's . Years ago, he huddled in the stairwell, those same tearful eyes, asking me, "Can I go home with you?" At that moment, I remembered the days I scrimped and saved to pay for Liam 's tuition, my fingers red from knitting him sweaters in the cold winter, and the way he said, "I'll never forget your kindness." My heart softened once more.

Liam and I will cover your tuition and living expenses ." I patted her on the shoulder. "Just let me know if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask."

I truly treat her like a younger sister. Knowing she was used to wearing her old clothes, I took her to the mall and bought her a dress that cost several hundred yuan, while I was still wearing last year's old T-shirt; afraid that she would be laughed at by her classmates, I took her to get skin care treatments, bought her skin care products, and taught her how to do makeup; even worried that she would fall behind in her studies, I stayed up all night organizing my notes and wrote down Liam 's study methods for her word by word.

Vanessa would always hug my arm, sweetly calling me " Sister Clara ," saying, "You're even better than my own sister," and "When I become successful, I'll definitely give you a good life." She would bring me water to wash my feet, tidy up my room, and say to Liam , "My sister is so good to me; I can never let her down in this lifetime."

But I never expected that her "repayment" would be to climb into my husband's bed.

That day was the day Vanessa received her acceptance letter—she got into the university where we worked, in the same physics department as Liam . I took half a day off to buy her favorite pork ribs and the strawberries she'd been talking about for so long from the market, and also ordered a cream cake with "Bright Future" printed on it, wanting to surprise her.

As I inserted the key into the lock, I was still smiling and thinking that I would take a picture with her later and post it on WeChat Moments to show off my "good little sister". But the moment I pushed open the door, the clothes scattered in the living room were like sharp knives, stabbing my eyes painfully—it was the white dress I bought for Vanessa , and Liam's favorite gray shirt.

The bedroom door was ajar, and the sounds coming from inside froze me. The shopping basket in my hand clattered to the floor, ribs rolled all over the floor, and strawberries splattered with juice. I rushed over and pushed open the bedroom door, and the sight before me made me lose my mind instantly— Liam was shirtless, Vanessa was curled up in his arms, the two of them tightly embracing, the blankets had slipped off, revealing skin covered with ambiguous red marks.

Chapter 6

"Ah—!" I screamed and lunged forward, smashing the cake I was holding onto them. Cream streamed down Liam 's cheeks like mocking tear tracks. I turned and rushed into the garden, uprooting all the flowers he and Vanessa had planted together, smashing the flowerpots to pieces. Iris petals littered the ground, like my shattered heart.

" Clara ! Haven't you made enough of a scene?!" Liam burst out wrapped in a towel and grabbed me. He was so strong that my wrist ached. Vanessa hid behind him, wrapped herself tightly in the blanket, and said timidly with teary eyes, "Sis, don't be angry, I..."

"Don't call me 'sister'!" I shook off Liam 's hand, pointed at Vanessa 's nose and yelled, "I treated you like my own sister, and this is how you repay me? You ungrateful wretch!"

“ Clara , watch your words.” Liam pulled Vanessa closer, his eyes as cold as ice. “It’s not what you think. I initiated it. It has nothing to do with Vanessa . You’re shameless, but Vanessa still has to face people at school. Close the door!”

"It's not what I thought?" I laughed, tears streaming down my face. " Liam , have you forgotten what you told me back then? You said you'd only be good to me for the rest of your life, you said you'd never betray me! And now you're holding another woman, making me shameless?"

I rushed forward to hit Vanessa , but Liam shoved me hard to the ground. My lower back hit the steps, and I winced in pain. He looked down at me, his eyes full of disgust: " Clara , look at yourself! You're like a shrew! Where's your ladylike demeanor ? Vanessa is more sensible, more considerate, and understands me better than you!"

"Understand you?" I stood up, leaning against the wall, trembling all over. "I've been through eight years of hardship with you, helping you with your tuition, staying up all night with you, and standing by your side when you were being questioned. I don't understand you? What does she understand about you? Does she understand how you grow flowers, or does she understand how you betrayed your wife?"

I pressed him for an explanation, but he frowned, as if dealing with troublesome experimental data: " Clara , you are still my wife. The villa and the savings are all yours. As long as you behave yourself and don't make a scene, Vanessa will never affect your position. She is just my confidante, nothing more."

"A soulmate?" Before I could speak, Vanessa suddenly knelt down in front of me with a thud, tears streaming down her face. "Sister, I know I was wrong, but Linchuan and I are truly in love. We talk about physics, we talk about flowers; we are soulmates, something you and he never had. Don't worry, I don't want any titles or money. I just want to stay by his side, help him with his life, and take care of him. That will be enough for me. I will always remember your kindness. From now on, I will serve you tea and water and take care of you for the rest of my life!"

She cried so hard she was hoarse, looking wronged and pitiful, but I clearly saw a faint smile creep onto her lips when she lowered her head.

I was only twenty-five years old that year, an age when I valued love and dignity more than life itself. How could I tolerate such betrayal? How could I accept my husband and "sister" having such a "threesome"? That night, I stayed up all night writing a letter of denunciation, writing down their sordid deeds word by word, and attaching records of Liam transferring money to Vanessa and intimate photos of the two of them—which I had accidentally discovered before, and at the time I had deceived myself into thinking it was a misunderstanding.

Clinging to my last shred of hope, I sent the whistleblower letter to the school leaders. But reality dealt me the cruelest blow.

Three days later, the punishment came down—not to Liam , but to me. I was given a public reprimand for "maliciously slandering a colleague due to personal grudges, affecting school conduct and discipline," and my performance bonus was docked for six months. Liam , on the other hand, not only escaped unscathed, but was also personally called in for a talk by the principal, who told him to "pay more attention to the growth of young students."

Ironically, at a physics department meeting, Liam publicly said, " Vanessa is a bright and promising student. I hope all the professors will put in a lot of effort and nurture her well." When his gaze swept over me, there was not a ripple of emotion, as if I were just an insignificant stranger.

I cried for a long time in the office that day. My colleagues either pretended not to see or whispered among themselves. An older woman who was usually on good terms with me secretly slipped me a tissue: " Clara , let it go. Liam is the school's cash cow, who can touch him? Vanessa is on his side now, you can't beat him."

I looked out the window and saw Liam walking side by side with Vanessa on the tree-lined path. He was carrying a thermos, probably bringing her lunch. The sunlight shone on them, making them look just like the people I used to walk with on campus back in the day.

Just then, a sharp pain shot through my lower abdomen. I clutched my stomach and crouched down, my clothes instantly soaked with cold sweat. I remembered the two red lines on the pregnancy test that morning, and I realized I hadn't had a chance to tell Liam —we were having a baby.
