Chapter 1

On the verge of death, I received a system that gave me special powers.

I was giving five wishes. However, both my body and soul will have to experience excruciating pain for every wish that I make.

My childhood sweetheart, Ben Greenwood, used my first four wishes recklessly whilst ignoring the pain that I had to experience for every wish.

When he forced me to use my last wish to make the scar on his female consultant's face to disappear, I looked at the face that looked exactly like his first love and my heart ached.

What he didn't know was that after using my final wish, I would die.

I instinctively stroked the scar on my neck, it was the mark left after the System repaired me for the fourth time.

At that moment, the assistant set the coffee lightly on the desk.

“Mr. Greenwood, the cross-border acquisition case was successfully completed.”

The sound of porcelain hitting marble made my fingertips tremble.

A business partner teased Ben Greenwood, “Mr. Greenwood, you have both a talented consultant and a beautiful secretary. You always get the good-looking girls, you lucky brat.”

He bumped Ben’s shoulder, but was cut off by Ben’s icy gaze.

Ben shot me a sidelong glance, his eyes as cold as frost.

“You like Jennifer? Want me to introduce her to you so you can also taste what it feels like to be betrayed by family and watch your entire family fall?”

In an instant, the business partner shut his mouth.

Everyone in the company knew that the death of Ben’s first love, Mandy Somerfield, had something to do with me and the only reason he kept me by his side as his secretary was to torment me thoroughly.

I had been Ben’s follower since childhood, he knew that no matter what happened, I would never leave him.

I had to admit that I was deeply and uncontrollably in love with him, and for that love, I was willing to be punished.

I crouched beside the car, foolishly waiting for Ben to get off work.

Then Ben suddenly rushed out from behind and dragged me into the car.

His fingers pinched my chin with crushing force, as if he were going to break it.

“Jennifer, you should be dying soon, right? Use your last wish to erase the scar on Riley’s face.”

I panted and forced a faint smile.

“Ben, dying hurts.”

He hooked up a pleased yet vicious smile.

“What are you afraid of, Jennifer? It’s not like you’re dying for the first time, so what’s the difference?”

Riley was his advisor, and she looked exactly like Ben’s late first love.

As he spoke, he yanked open my shirt collar, stared at the scar, and wore a twisted smile.

Memories surged up like a tide.

Five years ago, on the night before the wedding, I joyfully tried on the pearl veil Ben had given me.

I never expected my mentally unstable mother to suddenly attack.

She stabbed a sharp knife toward my neck, and bright red blood dripped onto the white wedding dress.

And just like that, I died.

Before dying, I made a wish.

“I don’t want to die. I wish Mom wouldn’t kill me.”

After all, I had promised the late Mandy that I would take care of Ben in her place.

Ben had also said he would fulfill Mandy’s last wish and marry me.

I closed my eyes, thinking I would never wake again.

Then a mechanical voice suddenly rang in my mind.

“Congratulations, Host, for triggering your superpower. You have five resurrection chances. The wish you make before each death will come true. Here are the limits and conditions for the wishes.”

I didn’t have time to read the limits or conditions, I ran excitedly to Ben’s house.

“Ben, I have a system, I can make wishes... come... true.”

But I never expected that although I was revived, the one who died instead became Ben’s first love.

My mother tricked the Somerfield family out of everything they had.

Mandy’s dependent mother couldn’t bear it and jumped off a building, afterward, Mandy committed suicide as well.

Meanwhile, my mother fled and disappeared.

That gentle woman lay in the bathtub, wrapped in blood and water.

Ben’s face was streaked with tears, and in his devastated eyes, a spark of hope rose.

“Really? Jenny... then can you bring Mandy back to life?”

Chapter 2

I hugged Ben.

“Yes, I definitely can.”

But in the end, I still had not been able to bring his first love back to life.

When my thoughts returned, I promised Ben that I would think about it.

But what he didn’t know was that I only had one wish left.

I wanted to live, to see him every day.

Or at least die for something that was worth it.

Ben merely let out a cold sneer.

“You’re just scared of the pain.”

Bitterness welled up inside me, but I did not dare explain.

Ben hated me even more than he hated my mother.

“Jennifer, you said every wish came with conditions, so if you didn’t have to die, then did Mandy have to die instead? You talk about limits, but the truth is, you’re afraid of pain, afraid of death! Why should your wish be paid for with her life?”

I shrank my neck, letting my oversized hoodie hide the wound on my neck that the System had yet to repair.

‘No, Ben. I had almost sawed my neck off already. But the System’s bright red letters kept reminding me that a life that has already passed cannot be resurrected. Ben, I’m not afraid of pain, and I’m not afraid of death. But... there’s nothing I can do.’

That day, I went home with Ben as usual.

At the end of the long narrow path, the light in my house—one that should not have been on—lit up.

My heart sank.

Ben slung his suit jacket over his shoulder and lowered his head to look teasingly at my panicked face.

“Jennifer, is your mom back?”

He reached out and pushed me toward the half-open door.

“It takes a villain to deal with a villain, don’t you think?”

He walked toward his own home across the street without looking back.

Staring at his receding figure, I reached out, wanting to pull him back.

But a powerful force suddenly yanked me into my house before I could react.

The first thing I saw was my mother, who had been on the run for years and still refused to stop her crimes.

Her loud slap made my head ring.

“Where’s the money? Where did you hide my money?”

My mom tormented me until midnight.

With blood covering my hair, I returned to my room and quietly treated my wounds.

Out of habit, I looked toward Ben’s house across the street.

The moment I glanced over, his bedroom curtains drifted down.

The only warm light went out moments later.

I held a clean cloth and wiped away the blood and the tears that had fallen at some point.

We hadn’t always been like this.

Back then, when faced with my mom’s madness, Ben would hold my hand.

He would say he had made my favorite sweet-and-sour pork ribs and ask whether I wanted to stay at their house that night.

When my mom raised her fists, he would shield me behind him.

When he couldn’t stop her, he would pace anxiously in his room until he saw the light in mine turn on.

Across the night, he would wave at me and comfort me over the phone until I fell asleep.

But later, he never smiled at me again.

I checked my phone, it was four in the morning, and I had to assemble at six to go to another company for a project meeting.

I decided not to sleep and went to the small kitchen.

Ben did not like eating breakfast, but as long as I prepared a delicate morning meal for him, he would always let me sit beside him.

I always believed our relationship would return to what it once was.

Early in the morning, I brought the carefully prepared breakfast to the company.

As soon as I walked into the office, I saw Ben talking with Riley.

When Riley saw me, a flash of hostility passed through her eyes.

I walked to Ben’s desk and said softly, “Mr. Greenwood, this is the breakfast I prepared.”

Riley suddenly reached out and knocked over the tray, the food spilling onto the floor.

“Jennifer, what are you doing? Trying to seduce Mr. Greenwood?”

I forced myself to remain calm.

“Miss Jones, please stop being unreasonable.”

“Unreasonable?” Riley raised her voice. “You parade yourself in front of Mr. Greenwood every day—aren’t you just trying to climb up? Look at yourself, you’re disgusting!”

Chapter 3

Ben frowned. “Enough.”

I thought he was going to speak up for me, but the next sentence was, “Get out. And don’t bother preparing breakfast anymore.”

Riley immediately showed a triumphant smile.

My hand froze for a moment, a sharp pain pierced my chest, and I turned to leave the office, but Riley followed me and blocked my way.

“Jennifer, don’t you feel ashamed, trailing behind Mr. Greenwood like a little shadow every single day?”

Her crimson nails suddenly clamped around my wrist, and the faint scar on her face came close to my eyes.

“Do you know how disgusted I feel every time I see Ben staring at you in a daze? I’m clearly the one who looks most like her!”

All the blood in my body instantly froze.

Under Riley’s wine-red curls, her side profile indeed overlapped with the photo of Mandy on the gravestone.

Riley suddenly yanked at her curled hair like a madwoman.

“Why? I ruined my face for him, I went into the operating room to turn myself into Mandy, but his eyes are still on you!”

She suddenly leaned in, her warm breath carrying a metallic scent.

“If it weren’t for all the surgeries, this scar wouldn’t even be here.”

“Use your system to fix my face. Otherwise...”

I flung her hand away and ran off.

I ran all the way home, since Ben never forgot his first love and considered Riley’s face more important than life itself, what did it mean that I stayed by his side all this time?

Late at night in the cemetery, I poured wine in front of the photo on the tombstone.

Moonlight fell on the gold-engraved words “Tomb of My Love Mandy Somerfield,” shining with a cold glow.

“I promised that I would take care of him for you...”

A metallic taste surged into my throat, I tilted my head back and drank the liquor.

“But he hates me now. If only I hadn’t made that wish back then. If only I had been the one who died.”

I looked up at her gentle smiling face.

Tears fell to the ground in sharp drops.

“My mom and I have let you down, I...”

“Jennifer!”

Ben’s gritted voice came from behind me.

“Who said you could come here? Didn’t I tell you not to disgust her?”

Ben grabbed my collar and hauled me up, dragging my wrist as he pulled me out of the cemetery.

Not far from the cemetery, there was a steep cliff.

He let go of my hand, his voice cold.

“Don’t you have a system? Jump. Kill yourself and heal the scar on Riley’s face. If you come back to life, then I’ll believe you really have that stupid system, and I’ll believe it truly can’t save her.”

Looking at his tense expression, tears streamed uncontrollably down my face.

“Ben, I’m almost out of wishes. This time I really will die. Please... don’t do this to me, okay? We used to be so happy together...”

He cut me off with cold precision.

“You’re mistaken, Jennifer. The past is gone. I’ve only treated you that way because you have some system.”

His mocking gaze slid across my face.

“I wish you and your mother would disappear forever.”

My mind buzzed blankly.

Looking at Ben’s face—filled with anger and hatred—I finally understood that we could never return to what we once were.

I lowered my eyes and looked toward the cliff.

My heart had gone completely still.

Maybe it was fine to die just like that.

I said nothing more, gathered all my strength, and—in the midst of Ben’s stunned expression—leapt.

The violent wind roared past my ears.

It drowned out Ben’s desperate scream.

I closed my eyes and silently made my wish.

“System, I want to use the last wish for myself. I wish to never love Ben again.”
