Elena POV
I turned around, wiping the wet hair from my face, and looked up at Damon Blackwood.
Over the three years of my engagement to Adrian, Damon was always the quiet presence in the background. While Adrian ignored me at family dinners or left me waiting alone for hours, Damon was the one who noticed. He pulled out chairs for me, handed me a glass of water when I looked exhausted, and spoke to me with steady respect without ever expecting a reward.
"You shouldn't stay out in the rain," he said, his voice calm over the sound of the downpour.
My hands were trembling as everything from inside the mansion finally crushed down on me. I opened my mouth to explain what happened on the stairs, but Damon raised a hand slightly, stopping me before I could speak.
"I was standing near the grand hall," he said quietly. "I saw enough of her fall to know it didn't look right."
Relief washed over me so fast my knees almost gave out. For the first time all night, someone wasn't treating me like a liar.
"What do you plan to do now?" he asked.
"I need to go to the hospital," I said, setting my jaw. "If a doctor examines her properly, the truth will come out. I won't let her ruin my name."
"I'll drive you," Damon said.
I pulled back, hesitating as I looked at his car. Going anywhere with Adrian's brother right now felt like a mistake, and the last thing I wanted was to drag anyone else into this mess.
Reading my hesitation, Damon added, "Going to the hospital isn't about Adrian, Elena. It's about clearing your name."
I swallowed hard, looking at the steady look in his eyes, and finally nodded.
When we reached the hospital hallway outside Vivian's treatment room, Adrian was pacing back and forth, his coat soaked. The second he saw me with Damon, his face hardened.
"What are you doing here?" Adrian snapped. "Haven't you done enough tonight?"
"I came for the truth," I replied, standing my ground. "I want her examined properly."
Adrian glared at his brother. "Stay out of this, Damon."
"I'm not interfering," Damon said quietly, stepping beside me. "I brought her so she wouldn't have to face this alone."
Before Adrian could answer, the doctor stepped out of the room. "Are you with Miss Vivian?"
"Yes," Adrian said immediately. "How is she?"
"She sustained injuries from the fall and needs further tests," the doctor said. "However, we have an immediate problem. Our blood bank is low on her specific type for the procedure we are considering. Do any of you know your blood type?"
He named the rare blood type. My blood type.
Adrian turned to me, his eyes cold and commanding. "Elena. You're a match. Donate."
I stared at him with disbelief. "You want me to give her my blood? Are you serious right now?"
Adrian didn't blink. He took a step toward me, his jaw set, silently waiting for me to obey.
My stomach twisted into a knot. I looked from his cold eyes to the closed treatment room door. If I walked away now, he would accuse me of leaving her to die. There was no winning here, no explanation he would listen to, and no way out.
I forced my hands flat against my sides to hide their trembling.
"I'll do it," I said softly.
I lay on the cold cot in the donor room, watching my blood fill the plastic bag. For three years, I had drained myself trying to earn Adrian's love. Now, I was literally giving my blood to the woman who stole my life.
This is the last thing I ever give them, I thought. The absolute last thing.
When I walked back into the waiting room, lightheaded and pale, Damon stood up immediately. He walked over to the dispenser and handed me a cup of water before I even asked.
A few feet away, Adrian didn't even look up. He was leaning against the wall, staring at the floor, completely consumed by worry for Vivian.
The doctor came back out shortly after. "We are preparing Miss Vivian for surgery now."
I frowned. "Surgery? She was conscious at the mansion. She spoke clearly before she fell. Are her injuries really that severe?"
Adrian whipped around, his face dark with fury. "Are you serious right now? She's going into surgery and you're still trying to minimize what you did?"
"I just gave her my blood!" I shouted back, three years of pain bursting out of me. "I gave her my blood after you publicly accused me of pushing her!"
"Donating blood doesn't erase what you did!" Adrian sneered.
Something inside me broke cleanly in two. Three years of waiting for him, defending him, accepting his canceled dates, and pretending that his relationship with Vivian didn't hurt me came rushing up my throat.
I looked him directly in the eyes.
"I kept thinking that if I loved you enough, you would eventually choose me." My voice trembled, but I refused to look away. "But I was wrong. You never had to choose me because I was never the woman you wanted."
Adrian took a heavy step toward me.
I didn't move. "I won't beg you to love me anymore," I said softly.
His arm swung up in a sudden motion, his open palm coming right for my face.
I froze, my breath catching in my throat. My eyes stayed locked on his hand.
Adrian stopped himself in mid-air. His hand hung frozen an inch from my face, his knuckles white and shaking, before he slowly lowered it back to his side.
Elena POV
I stood frozen in the hospital corridor, staring at the hand that had almost struck me.
The shock wasn't from the fact that Adrian had raised his hand, but from the realization that a part of me had still expected him to choose me.
For three years, I had made excuses for his coldness, his distance, and every moment he made me feel like I was asking for too much.
He took a step toward me, his expression filled with anger instead of regret. "I lost control because you kept provoking me, Elena," he said, his voice hard and defensive. "Vivian is lying in a surgical room right now because of you."
I stared at him quietly. The urge to defend myself, to explain what really happened, was still there, but it no longer felt important. I had spent three years trying to convince Adrian to believe me, and I was exhausted from fighting for something that should have never required a battle.
I lowered my gaze to the engagement ring on my finger. The platinum band that once represented promises and a future together suddenly felt like a reminder of every disappointment I had swallowed. Slowly, I reached down and pulled it over my knuckle.
Then I placed the ring into his open palm.
"We're done," I said.
Adrian stared at the ring before looking back at me. His brows furrowed as though he couldn't understand what he was seeing. "Are you seriously throwing away three years because of one argument?"
"It's not about tonight," I replied. My voice was calmer than I expected, even though my heart was breaking inside my chest. "Tonight was just the moment that finally showed me the truth."
Adrian opened his mouth to respond, but before he could say anything, the treatment room door opened. A nurse rushed into the hallway with a worried expression. "Mr. Blackwood!"
Adrian immediately turned toward her. "What happened?"
"Miss Vivian is awake," the nurse said quickly. "She's frightened, and she keeps asking for you."
I watched the anger disappear from Adrian's face, replaced instantly by concern. For one brief second, I thought he might stay and finish our conversation. I thought he might finally look at me and realize what he was losing.
But I was wrong.
"I have to go," Adrian said.
I stood there silently, watching the door close behind him. This time, I didn't chase after him. I didn't call his name or ask him to come back.

Outside the hospital entrance, cold air hit my face. Under the shelter of the overhang, Damon stood quietly with his hands resting inside his pockets. He didn't ask what happened or demand an explanation when his eyes fell on my bare finger.
Instead, he asked, "Have you eaten anything since you donated blood?"
My exhaustion caught up with me all at once. My legs felt weak, and the lightheadedness from earlier returned. "No," I whispered.
"Then let's get something to eat," Damon said.
I hesitated as I looked toward his dark car parked nearby. The thought of returning to my parents' questions or sitting alone in my apartment made my chest tighten. I had no idea what my life looked like now that the future I planned for three years was gone.
"Why are you still here, Damon?" I asked softly.
He looked at me for a moment before answering. "Because I didn't think you should leave alone tonight."
His simple words affected me more than they should have. I remembered all the small moments over the years, the chair he pulled out when Adrian walked ahead, the water he offered when Adrian forgot to notice I was tired, and the respect he gave me without expecting anything in return.
I looked away, trying to hide the emotion gathering in my eyes. Then I quietly walked toward his car and got inside.
Damon drove us to a small restaurant away from the center of the city. It was quiet and nearly empty, giving us the first chance to speak without the Blackwood family watching every move. The silence between us wasn't uncomfortable, but it was unfamiliar.
The waiter placed warm tea and food in front of us. I stared at the steam rising from my cup, unsure how to explain everything I was feeling. Finally, I broke the silence.
"I ended the engagement," I said.
Damon placed his napkin down and looked at me calmly. He didn't celebrate my decision or criticize his brother. He simply asked, "Are you sure that's what you wanted?"
"Yes," I answered quietly. My fingers wrapped around the warm cup. "I just don't know what happens next."
"You don't need to know tonight," Damon replied. "You spent years planning a future with someone else, so it's normal that tomorrow feels uncertain."
His words settled over me like a comfort I didn't realize I needed. For once, someone wasn't telling me what decision to make. They were simply allowing me to make one.
After a moment of silence, I looked across the table at him. "Why have you always been kind to me?"
Damon paused, his fingers resting against the table. "Because I noticed."
I frowned slightly.
"I noticed when Adrian stopped showing up for dinners. I noticed when you sat alone pretending you weren't disappointed. I noticed when you defended him even when everyone could see you were hurting."
His eyes remained steady on mine. "But I never interfered because you had chosen him."
My chest tightened at his words. "And now?"
Damon glanced briefly at my empty finger before meeting my gaze again. "Now you have the chance to choose something different."
I stared at him, trying to understand what he meant. "What are you saying?"
Damon was silent for a moment before taking a slow breath. "I have an offer for you."
My heartbeat quickened. "What kind of offer?"
His expression remained calm, but his voice became serious. "Marry me."
I went completely still.
The restaurant suddenly felt too quiet, and I could hear my own heartbeat pounding in my ears. I stared at him, waiting for a smile or a sign that he was joking, but Damon didn't look away.
"I'm not asking because you're hurt," he said. "And I'm not asking because I feel sorry for you."
He leaned back slightly, giving me space instead of pressure. "I don't expect you to love me right now, Elena. I'm offering you a chance to start over without being controlled by Adrian or either of our families."
I looked at the man sitting across from me. The man who had spent three years quietly treating me with the kindness I had begged another person to give me.
"Why me?" I whispered.
Damon held my gaze for a long moment. "Because for three years, I watched you give everything to someone who never understood what he had."
His voice softened. "And now, for the first time, you get to make a choice that belongs only to you.”
