My Husband Slept With His Mistress During Our Daughter’s Death Chapter 1

The Tuesday started like any other.

I was folding laundry on the couch when I heard the thump. Not loud. Just wrong. The kind of sound that bypasses your ears and lands straight in your chest.

I dropped the shirt in my hands and walked to the living room doorway.

Lily was on the floor.

She wasn't moving right. Her small body was rigid, then shaking, then rigid again. Her lips had gone pale. Her eyes were half-open and seeing nothing.

"Lily."

I was on my knees before I finished saying her name. I pressed my hand to her cheek. Too cold. I tilted her chin up the way I'd seen on TV and I screamed her name again and nothing came back.

I called 911 first. My voice was steady. I don't know how.

Then I called Erick.

It rang four times. Went to voicemail. His voice, smooth and recorded: *Leave a message.*

I called again.

The dispatcher was talking in my ear, telling me to stay calm, telling me help was coming. I nodded like she could see me. I called Erick a third time.

Voicemail.

Lily made a sound then. Small. Wet. I pulled her into my lap and I kept calling.

Call ten. Call fifteen. My thumb hit redial so many times the motion stopped feeling like a choice.

By call thirty, I could hear the sirens outside.

The paramedics came through the front door and I stepped back and let them work and I kept calling. I stood against the wall with my hand pressed flat to my sternum and I watched them put an oxygen mask over my daughter's face and I called her father.

Call forty-five. Call fifty.

They moved her to the stretcher. One of them said something to me. I followed them out the door.

Call sixty. Lily was in the ambulance. I climbed in after her.

I watched her chest. I watched the monitor. I called Erick.

Somewhere across Seattle, I didn't know it yet, but his phone was face-down on a nightstand. His hand was on Marlowe Nguyen's waist. He felt the buzz of my call against the wood and he reached over and silenced it.

Then he pulled her closer.

Call seventy. Call eighty.

The paramedic across from me was doing things with his hands that I couldn't look at directly. I looked at Lily's face instead. She looked like she was sleeping. She looked so small on that stretcher. She'd worn her yellow shirt today, the one with the strawberry on the pocket, because she said strawberries were happy.

Call ninety.

The monitor made a sound.

Call ninety-nine.

They said time of death at 4:47 p.m.

I don't remember putting the phone down.

---

The hospital corridor was white and very quiet.

I sat in a plastic chair with my phone in my lap. The screen was cracked. I must have gripped it too hard at some point. The call log was still open. Ninety-nine attempts. Zero answers.

I didn't cry.

I kept waiting to. I kept expecting something to crack open inside me. But there was just this cold, spreading stillness, like water freezing from the edges in.

Margaret arrived four hours later. She'd caught the first flight she could. I heard her before I saw her — the sound of her heels on the linoleum, fast and uneven, and then her voice breaking on my name.

"Elia."

She was sixty-two years old and she looked, in that moment, like something had been taken out of her. She grabbed both my hands and squeezed them so hard my knuckles went white.

I brought her to the morgue.

She wept the way I couldn't. She held Lily's hand in both of hers and bent over it and her whole body shook. She kept saying *my baby, my baby girl* and the words just fell into the room and stayed there.

I stood beside her with my fingertips pressed together. In my head, I was already choosing flowers. Pink peonies. Lily had pointed at them in a picture book three weeks ago and said *those ones, Mommy, those are the prettiest ones.*

White casket. Pink peonies. The lullaby she liked — the one about the moon.

I would handle it. I would handle all of it.

Erick arrived at the chapel late. I smelled him before I turned around. It wasn't his usual cologne. It was something softer, something that didn't belong to him, and for one terrible second the smell told me everything I hadn't yet let myself confirm.

He was stammering. Work emergency. His phone had been on silent. He was so sorry, he was *so sorry* —

He held out his black Amex card.

"Let me take care of the arrangements," he said. "Whatever you need."

I looked at him. I looked at the card. I looked through both of them like they were made of smoke.

I said nothing. I took nothing.

I had already decided.

---

The next morning I stood in our kitchen while the coffee maker dripped and I waited for him to come downstairs.

When he did, I said it plainly.

"I want a divorce."

He stopped moving. Then came the familiar sequence — the wide eyes, the slow exhale, the careful repositioning of his face into something that looked like concern.

"Elia. You're grieving. You're not thinking clearly —"

"I want a divorce."

"We should see someone. A counselor. We shouldn't make decisions right now —"

"Divorce, Erick."

He kept talking. I stopped listening.

I walked upstairs. I pulled a single suitcase from the closet shelf. I set it open on the bed.

And I began to pack.
