Bowen gave a carefree laugh and said, "What's the big deal? Since we were kids, I've always handled these things for Nad. She's a delicate little princess. She may get rashes from wearing cheap underwear. I've had to apply the medicated cream for her myself sometimes.
"But now that I have you, things will be much easier for me."
That didn't sound anything like a healthy or normal sibling relationship. I swallowed the words that nearly came out of my mouth. Since that was their family matter, I ultimately said nothing.
After all, once Bowen and I got married, we would move out. He wouldn't have the chance to take care of her underwear anymore.
Right now, Nadia was still shouting for me to take off my dress and give it to her in the banquet hall.
I looked at Nadia and said coldly, "I'm going to be your sister-in-law. Are you sure you want to continue speaking to me in that tone?"
Nadia stomped her foot angrily and pouted. "Don't think that you can disrespect me just because you're my sister-in-law. Listen here. Get on your knees and prostrate yourself before me, or I'll have Bowie divorce you!"
The guests started whispering among themselves, and the crowd below the stage stirred with jeers.
I was so enraged that I laughed out loud in disbelief. But when I turned my head, I saw her father, Elton Lawson, and her mother, Jemima Thorne, smiling dotingly like Nadia had done the most impressive thing in the world.
Elton tried to persuade me to give in. "Nad is still a child. She's just joking. There's no harm in playing along with her, Lauren."
Jemima chimed in, "Don't speak so harshly. You're scaring Nad. It's your big day. Don't fuss over every little thing."
How ridiculous! How could someone in her 20s still be considered a child? Not only was Nadia delusional and thought she was some princess, but she was also a giant infant.
I retorted frostily, "So you know it's our big day. But did you hear the things she said? If that was just a joke, then I'll say the same things at her wedding."
My words immediately left Jemima speechless.
Nadia dragged Bowen over to her side and threw herself into his arms.
She pouted and complained like a spoiled brat, "Look at her, Bowie! Now I'm really mad! I want her to kneel and apologize to me. She has to return all the gifts our family gave her. Only then will I forgive her for disrespecting me.
"Also, she has to give me all of the wedding gifts her family prepared for her too. Her things are Bowie's things, and Bowie's things are all mine!"
I hadn't even married Bowen yet, and she was already trying to snatch away things that were rightfully mine.
Bowen didn't even look at me before smiling and saying, "Okay."
I shot him a cold glance. In the past, I knew he spoiled Nadia silly. However, I never expected that he would let her have her way even at our wedding.
Dad, who was seated at a table in front of the stage, was absolutely livid. He was so furious that his mustache quivered, and he glared at Elton from across the table.
"Is this how you treat my daughter?" Dad asked through gritted teeth.
Elton quickly shot Bowen a look and said, "Alright, Lauren. Nad's our little princess. Don't take her words too seriously. After all, we spoiled her rotten. If anything she said offended you, I apologize to you on her behalf."
Jemima spoke up to smooth things over too. "Okay, that's enough. It was all just a misunderstanding. We've already apologized. Just let it go. What's important is completing the wedding ceremony."
Nadia hid behind Bowen and only came out looking all aggrieved once everything had settled.
She pouted and said, "Fine. I'll let you off without kneeling and apologizing for Bowie's sake. I came to congratulate him on his wedding, but now I've ended up as the villain."
I pointed to the stairs leading down the stage and said indifferently, "If you're done talking, then get off the stage. This is my wedding."
"I'm not done yet!" Nadia snapped, turning around to show half her face while still snug in Bowen's embrace.
She then eagerly picked up the microphone and said, "Even if I spared you from apologizing, don't think you can become my sister-in-law so easily. You still have to pass my test!"
Nadia had an evil look on her face, and a sinister smile tugged at the corner of her lips.
I raised an eyebrow, sensing trouble.
But before I could stop her, she lifted her gown and ran to the center of the stage with her high heels clacking against the ground noisily.
"My test is called The Truth Game!" Nadia's voice boomed through the microphone, echoing into every corner of the hotel hall.
She said bossily, "No matter what I ask you in a moment, you must answer truthfully within five seconds. If you fail to answer, I have a severe punishment in store for you."
With that, she didn't even pause to take a breath before she started her interrogation, "How many boyfriends have you had?"
She shoved the microphone toward me aggressively.
"I…"
Just as I opened my mouth, Nadia glared at me and interrupted harshly, "I'm not done yet! Did you kiss them? Did you sleep with them? What positions did you use each time?"
The moment those words left her mouth, all of the guests gasped in shock. Asking those kinds of questions at a wedding was blatant sabotage.
Everyone present showed a myriad of expressions. Some of them knew Nadia was Bowen's sister, while those who didn't thought Bowen had been fooling around with another woman. And now, that woman had come to crash his wedding.
Nadia's outlandish game was ridiculous. I was so infuriated by her antics that I laughed.
With the microphone shoved in front of my face, I turned to Bowen decisively and sneered, "What a wonderful little sister you have."
A flicker of surprise crossed his eyes.
He remained silent for a few seconds before sighing softly and saying, "Lauren, Nad doesn't harbor any ill intentions. Just give a casual answer…"
A casual answer? I didn't believe for a second that he didn't realize how damaging this was to my reputation. Despite knowing how much harm it could cause, he still sided with Nadia.
"Three… Two… One! Time's up!" Nadia's shrill voice blasted through the speakers.
A triumphant smile appeared on her face as she yapped, "Game over. Why didn't you answer, Nadia? Is it because you've slept with too many men and don't know where to start?"
I was so furious that my head cleared, and I remained calm.
I stared at the Lawsons. Bowen let Nadia get away with anything. Jemima sat by and let it all happen, and Elton was pretending to be drunk. None of them stepped up to stop her.
The boiling fury that I had been containing finally spilled forth.
I pointed to the door and yelled angrily, "Get Nadia out of here right now, or this wedding is off!"
Upon hearing this, Bowen's expression shifted. Even Jemima, who had been indifferent all the while, began to panic too.
Nadia's eyes sparkled with malice as she went on. "You haven't passed my test yet. Why are you in such a hurry to kick me out? Since you won't say it, allow me to answer it for you. You started dating guys in middle school. You've started sleeping around since then!
"You've probably slept with thousands of men by now!"
As soon as she finished speaking, two voices rang out simultaneously.
"Nad!"
"Shut up, Nad!"
Bowen quickly rushed forward to snatch the microphone from her. Jemima scolded Nadia fiercely and hurried to drag her to the side, but she still shielded her protectively.
I stood where I was and looked on mockingly, taking in everything they did.
At that moment, I found it all laughable. So this was the family I had once decided to marry into.
Bowen hurried to explain. "Please don't be mad, Lauren. Nad didn't mean it. Don't take what she said to heart. I don't believe any of it…"
"I found out about all of this from my investigation, Bowie!" Nadia stomped her foot in rage.
She bit her lip pitifully and pointed at me. "She's pretending to be innocent and pure. Who knows how many guys she's slept with? She's nothing but a slut! Why are you defending her, Bowie?"
I glanced at the camera that was still recording everything. From the corner of my eye, I noticed quite a few guests in the audience watching enthusiastically as the drama unfolded. I also caught sight of several men with lewd smiles on their faces.
It instantly made me feel sick to my stomach.
I turned my head back toward Nadia with an icy gaze.
She was still rambling on. "You've never dated anyone before, Bowie. She's lucky to be able to marry you! I just wanted her to know her place. She should be honored and grateful that she even gets to marry into our family!"
Looking at the undisguised schadenfreude on Nadia's face, I found it all the more laughable. She spoke as if I had begged for this marriage. What made her think that I was inferior to them after I married into their family? So what if I slept with others before marriage?
What era were we in now? Why did she think anyone still cared about such antiquated views?
I sneered and said, "Then why don't you marry Bowen yourself?"
Nadia shouted defiantly, "Sure! I'd be overjoyed to get to marry Bowie!"
"In that case, this wedding is off. You marry him yourself," I said firmly.
With that, I tore off my veil and turned to leave.
At that moment, Dad stood up and slammed the table. "The Lawson family has gone too far. We're calling off the wedding!"
"Lauren!" Bowen suddenly panicked and grabbed my wrist in alarm.
He turned and scolded, "Nad, this is your sister-in-law! What nonsense are you spouting? Mom, come over here! Cover her mouth and take her away now!"
Jemima opened her mouth as if to say something, but upon seeing Bowen's stern expression, she had no choice but to comply.
Bowen apologized in a low and submissive voice, "Lauren, I didn't know Nad would pull something like this. We'll definitely give her a good talking-to later. Please don't be mad."
I had never seen Bowen so humble. But instead of feeling moved, I only felt bitter disappointment. He had had countless chances to step in and stop Nadia from saying all those outrageous things. However, he never stepped forward to stop her—not even once.
It wasn't until I said I wouldn't marry him that he panicked, which was utterly absurd.
I coldly shook off his hand and turned to leave.
As I turned around, I noticed the large screen that had been playing the video of Bowen and me had gone black.
In the next second, they were replaced by photos of me and Bowen in bed! One after another, the screen displayed images of us, undressed, in all sorts of intimate poses.
Bowen's body, aside from his face, was heavily censored. Unlike him, I had only a few crude mosaics covering my essential parts.
The hall fell silent for a moment. Then, there came an uproar consisting of loud gasps of disbelief that nearly blew the roof off the hotel.
My head throbbed so hard I was sure it would explode at any moment. My face turned ghostly pale, and I turned to Bowen to demand an answer.
"What is this?" I questioned coldly.
Bowen was also stunned. "I… I don't know. I made sure to store them in my computer securely…"
"The passcode to Bowie's computer is my birthday." Nadia's smug voice came through the speakers. "I wanted everyone to see how slutty you are in bed when you seduce men!"
Photo after photo of my nearly naked body continued to be displayed on the screen.
My body swayed, and I could barely remain standing. I dug my nails into my palm to stay composed. Quickly, I ordered someone to go backstage to stop Nadia.
But right then, Bowen suddenly shouted in terror beside me. "Wait, stop it! Stop showing the photos!"
