RHYNA'S POV
"Long before you and I were born, Conan said, his voice low, serious, like he was speaking to the universe itself.
"There was a prophecy," he continued, his green eyes boring into mine. "An Alpha will be bound to an enemy... a healer who holds the power of life in her hands. Together... they will either bring the pack salvation or destruction."
I froze, my chest tightening. My hands curled into fists.
"Fuck you," I spat, cutting him off before he could continue. "What the fuck does that have to do with me? You must be very, very delusional."
My wolf growled sharply, a low, warning sound that vibrated through my chest. I knew exactly what it meant. It agreed with Conan.
But I didn't care.
"Fuck fate," I muttered, turning away, my jaw tight.
He didn't move. He simply stood there, arms folded, watching me as if my words were the ramblings of a child.
"Here," he said after a long pause, breaking the silence. "Take a look for yourself."
He handed me a scroll, heavy and ancient-looking, bound in gold threads that shimmered faintly in the dim candlelight. The weight in my hands felt like a challenge.
"What's this?" I asked, my voice sharp, skeptical.
"Read it," he said. There was no inflection, no patience, just quiet authority.
I grabbed the scroll roughly and unrolled it.
The paper was thick, brittle at the edges, and the writing inside... it was written in deep crimson ink that looked almost like blood. My stomach twisted as I read the words, and I felt my chest tighten.
"Amidst bloodshed and loss, when the moon hides its silver light, a healer shall enter the Shadowbound Claw Pack. The bond shall awaken, uniting the enemy and Alpha. Life and death will hinge upon her hands. From her will, the pack will either rise triumphant or fall to shadows. Only the courage of the unwilling shall determine the path of survival, and only the strength of the bonded hearts shall decide the fate of all."
I flung the scroll to the floor. Tears blurred my vision, and I sank to my knees, hands pressed over my chest. My heart slammed wildly, refusing to calm, refusing to accept what I had just read.
"That... that's not true," I whispered, my voice trembling, barely audible. "It can't be..."
I looked up. Conan was still standing there, arms crossed over his chest, eyes unreadable but sharp, piercing.
"This isn't me," I said, my words cracking. "You're mistaken, okay? You're... you're lying."
My wolf growled deep in my chest, fierce and insistent. Every hair on my arms stood on end. This wasn't a lie. It never felt like one.
"Please," I said, my voice breaking as I got to my feet. "Just... let me go."
I turned toward the door, wanting to escape, to run far away from this mess, this turmoil, this war raging in my chest and mind. Every step I took felt heavy, weighted with dread and exhaustion.
But he was faster.
Before I could reach the door, his hand wrapped around my wrist. His touch was firm, unyielding, and it sent a jolt of heat through me.
"Deny it all you want," he murmured, his voice low, dangerous, "but you know it's true."
His breath was warm against my cheek. His scent filled my senses, overwhelming me, pulling at something primal I didn't want to acknowledge.
I wrestled against him, desperate to free myself. "Leave me alone!" I shouted, trying to wrench my arm free.
He didn't let go. Instead, he stepped closer, closing the distance between us until his presence consumed me.
"And if not..." he whispered, dangerously soft, " don't make this hard for yourself. It's difficult enough on me already."
My hands froze in place. His words burned, hitting somewhere deep in me. I hated him. I wanted to punch him, to shove him, to escape the power he held over me. And yet... I couldn't.
"I'm the one who's supposed to be conflicted here," he said with a faint edge of pride, "not you."
I felt my blood boil. "And why is that?" I asked, my voice sharp, trembling with a mix of anger and fear.
Conan tilted his head slightly, his green eyes darkening. He studied me like I was a puzzle he'd been given the answer to, and I wanted to scream at him. My wolf thrashed inside me, angry, restless, rejecting, but there was nothing I could do to quiet it.
He said slowly, almost deliberately, ignoring my question "this bond... this fate... it doesn't care what you want."
My chest tightened, my throat burning.
"Then I'll fight it," I said, my words cutting through the tense air. "I won't be your Luna. I won't be bound to you. I won't let this stupid prophecy... or you... control me."
His lips curled, a mixture of amusement and frustration flickering across his face.
"You think you have a choice?" he asked quietly. "You think the Moon Goddess asked you? You think she waits for your permission?"
I took a step back, breathing hard, heart hammering. My wolf snarled, ears pinned, claws itching, and I knew we were both screaming the same defiance.
"I... I won't bow," I said. "I don't care what's written in your damned scroll. I'm not the healer you think I am. I'm not the enemy you think I am. And I'm not yours."
Conan's jaw tightened, but he didn't move. He simply watched me, still, calm, and somehow even more terrifying.
"You think this is just about you?" he asked, his voice low, dangerous. "You think this is punishment, or cruelty?"
I shook my head, angry, desperate. "I don't know what it is. I don't care! Just leave me alone!"
"You can run," he said, finally stepping closer again. "You can scream. You can fight. But every step you take, every beat of your heart... it's tied to me now. You felt it before. That heat, that fire? That's not just fear. That's the bond waking inside you."
I felt my stomach twist. My hands curled into fists, trembling. My wolf growled, whined, tried to push against the invisible chains tying me to him, but it was useless.
"I... I didn't ask for this," I whispered. "I didn't choose this."
"And neither did I," he said softly, almost vulnerable for the first time. "But the bond doesn't care about choice. It never will. It decides. It awakens. It punishes. And it protects. It binds us whether we like it or not."
I wanted to scream, to hit him, to throw something, to prove that I was still in control. But every time I opened my mouth, my voice faltered. Every step I took, the air seemed to pull me closer to him. Every breath I drew tasted of the bond, the prophecy, the inevitability I was fighting so hard to deny.
"You can keep denying it," he whispered, green eyes locking onto mine, "but your wolf already knows. Your heart already knows. The fire burning inside you isn't just rage. It's fate."
I shook my head violently. "No," I said, my voice cracking. "No. This isn't real. It can't be. I refuse to accept it."
Conan's lips curved faintly, a predator's smile. "You can refuse all you want," he murmured. "But the blood... my blood... your touch... it sealed it. There's no going back."
My hands flew to my chest instinctively, the heat of the bond radiating like a fire, making me shiver, making my knees weak. I could feel him in me, in my mind, in my wolf, even when he wasn't touching me. And I hated it. I hated it so much.
"You think this is easy for me?" he asked, voice low and dangerous. "Do you think I wanted this bond? That I wanted you? That I asked for this?"
I swallowed hard, trying to speak, to argue, to push him away. My wolf roared in frustration and fear, but I stayed on my feet.
"I didn't ask for it," I whispered again. "And I don't want it. I don't want you."
His eyes softened ever so slightly, just enough to make me doubt my own words. "You can fight it. You can scream. You can hate me. But it won't change what's already begun."
I felt my chest tighten, heat and fear and fury all colliding. I wanted to run, to escape, to deny, to fight. But even as I made for the door again, his presence filled the room, smothering, impossible to ignore.
"Don't make this hard for yourself," he said, his words teasing and dangerous. "It's difficult for me already. I'm the one who's supposed to be conflicting here, not you."
I froze.
"I..." I swallowed, jaw tight, fists clenching.
My wolf growled, lungs burning, heart hammering. "And why is that?" I demanded, defiance blazing through me despite the chaos in my chest.
RHYNA'S POV
I looked at him squarely, my green eyes locking with his, while defiance and frustration sparking inside me.
"Why is that?" I asked again, my voice sharper this time. I wanted, no, I needed, to know why he should be more conflicted than I was. Every nerve in me burned with the unfairness of it all.
He inhaled slowly, his jaw tightening as he searched for words. "I have a woman I love with all my heart," he said quietly, almost as if confessing a sin. "A woman of nobility... one whom the whole pack adored... my Fairi."
My hands clenched into fists at my sides. Only the goddess knows why I didn't punch him right there. Why the fuck was he telling me this? Why should I care?
"So why the fuck are you telling me this?" I demanded, my chest heaving, anger and confusion twisting together inside me.
His eyes softened, and he stepped closer, the air around him heavy with heat. "I'm telling you this because... now I'm bound to you."
I blinked, the words hitting me like a slap to the face. My knees nearly gave way. "Don't you see this madness?" I spat, voice trembling with disbelief. "You're bound to me while you... you have someone else you love?"
"Yes," he said, calm and unyielding, but I saw the tension in his jaw. "I am. And it's not something I wanted. Not something I chose. But the bond... it doesn't care about what we want."
"Then fucking go for her and leave me alone!" I snapped, fury and hurt burning in my chest. "Let me deal with my own mess!"
He shook his head slowly, green eyes unreadable. "Where have you ever seen that happen before?"
I stopped mid-breath. That was true.
Bonds were not easily broken. Once they awakened, once the threads of life and soul entwined, they could not simply be cut by words or anger. To break a bond... it required a ritual of the Moon Goddess herself, and even then, there were consequences.
I thought of what I'd read in the ancient scrolls as a child. To attempt breaking a bond meant risking one's life, one's sanity, and even the soul of the pack. The bonded parties would suffer. One could fall into madness, the other into endless grief. The pack itself could fragment, torn between loyalties and curses. And if the ritual failed... death was certain for at least one of those involved.
I swallowed hard, my hands trembling. I just stood there, staring at him, the weight of the truth sinking into my chest like stones.
"I'm an Alpha," he said, his voice low, almost a whisper now. "Of a very great pack... and I'm already betrothed to another. Do you know the conflict that will arise when my elders know about this? Do you know the chaos that will follow if the bond is challenged? If the pack senses division?"
I swallowed, my throat dry. My fingers curled into my sleeves.
"I... I stumbled on that scroll yesterday," he continued, voice tight. "You don't know how I felt, seeing it. Knowing..."
For a moment, his expression softened, and I saw it. I saw the pain that raged beneath his calm exterior. Pain at being bound to a woman he didn't choose. Pain at the duty forced upon him. Pain in being tied to... me, a lowly Omega no one even noticed, no one even cared about.
I felt it like a blade twisting in my chest. For a fleeting moment, the roles reversed. I was the conflict here, and I hated it.
"I... then please," I said, my voice breaking, my legs weakening under the weight of everything, "please let me go."
He shook his head gently, his hand reaching out to brush a loose strand of hair from my face. His touch was light, tentative, almost reverent, and my body betrayed me, shivering where his fingers lingered.
"I can't," he said softly, his voice low, almost a whisper meant for me alone.
Before I could react, before I could pull away, before I could speak another word, his lips were on mine. Not pressing, not demanding, not forceful. Just... there. A soft brush of warmth and breath, light against my lips, teasing, claiming.
My wolf erupted, a scream of ownership and fire, echoing through every vein of my body. Mine! it yelled, every hair standing on end, every claw itching, every muscle trembling with raw desire and warning.
And I... I didn't fight.
My heart thumped wildly, and chaos ran through me like wildfire. My entire body screamed, every nerve alight, mine, mine, mine, and yet my mind tried desperately to push it away. I tried to remind myself of duty, of control, of reason.
But the will wasn't mine anymore. Not fully. Not against the bond, against the pull, against him.
His hands cupped my face gently now, holding me as though I were fragile, and yet the force of the bond between us roared like a tempest, claiming, tying, binding. My wolf howled, a low, possessive sound, echoing the emotions I couldn't voice.
And with a soft, almost inaudible sigh, I finally let go.
I let him in.
Conan's POV
Her lips parted just enough for me to realize she wasn't pushing me away. My chest tightened like someone had tied a knot around it. Every ounce of control I'd been holding onto slipped, and I leaned closer, letting the space between us disappear.
I rested my hands gently on her waist, careful not to push too hard. Her body stiffened at first, but then... she didn't move away. She let me be there. My heart was pounding so loudly I was sure she could hear it, but I didn't care.
I lowered my head slowly, and deepened my lips against hers. And she responded. Not much, just the slightest pressure back, but it was enough to show me that she wanted this.
Her hand moved to my chest, fingers brushing my skin, and that tiny touch made everything inside me ignite.
I tilted my head a little, deepening the kiss, soft and deliberate. No rush. No urgency. Just us. I felt the tension in her body ease a fraction as her arms tentatively wrapped around me. Her wolf growled in warning, and I knew her mind was screaming, but her heart... her heart was letting me in.
I pulled back just a little, enough to see her face, and my breath hitched. Her eyes were wide, glimmering, holding a mix of fear and wonder. The thought of her being scared for me, or of me, made something ache in my chest. I cupped her face gently, brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear, feeling the warmth of her skin under my hand.
"Rhyna..." I whispered, my voice hoarse.
Her lips curved into a faint, trembling smile, and I felt like I could hold onto that moment forever. I leaned back in, kissing her again, slower this time, savoring every heartbeat, every tiny sigh she let escape.
My forehead rested against hers, our breaths mingling. The world outside, prophecies, packs, conflicts, didn't exist here. It was just us, suspended in a quiet, fragile peace.
I kissed her neck gently, planting soft kisses here and there as if I were promising her something without words.
She leaned in closer, letting me stay, and in that surrender, I felt something shift. A quiet intimacy that didn't need words, a connection that spoke louder than anything else.
For the first time, I let myself believe that maybe... we could find a way, together, no matter the chaos waiting for us outside.
******
Her lips had just left mine when a shout tore through the air. My heart jumped, and my wolf growled, tense. Instantly, I froze.
My first thought: the enemy had broken through. My pack... my people...
But then I listened closer. This wasn't a scream of pain or bloodshed. It wasn't fear. Not at all. It was... something else. Joy. Wild, unrestrained joy that made my chest tighten with confusion.
Rhyna's hand squeezed mine, pulling me back from my thoughts. Her voice was soft, trembling. "What's going on? What's happening?"
"I... I don't know," I admitted, frowning. "Let's go find out."
I couldn't let go of her hands. The warmth of her fingers, the steady rhythm of her pulse, kept me grounded. I held her close as we moved toward the source of the noise. Every step drew the shouts clearer. Laughter and howls, cries of celebration that made no sense to me. My wolf whined in curiosity, confusion, and something else I couldn't name.
When we stepped into the clearing, the sight hit me like a thunderclap. Wolves were everywhere, leaping and spinning, their voices echoing, jubilant. They danced in circles, shouted, clawed at the earth, and the energy... It was intoxicating. But the source of their joy wasn't clear.
"She's back!" one wolf shouted.
"Thanks to the Moon Goddess!" another cheered.
"She's back!" came another voice, and another, until the words rang like a chorus across the pack.
My chest slammed with every beat of my heart. My wolf howled, overwhelmed. My mind went numb, and I pushed through the throng without thinking. I still held Rhyna's hands.
I froze for a moment, standing there as the pack danced around her. My heart pounded in my chest, my body trembling with a mix of relief, disbelief, and something I hadn't expected. She was here. She was alive. She was smiling at everyone.
I pushed forward, through the crowd, my heart hammering, chest slamming. And there she stood, right there, smiling at me. At the center of the crowd, moving like sunlight through the chaos, standing tall with a smile that lit up the clearing... Fairi.
I had started wars, shed blood, risked everything... all for her.
And there she was, smiling, alive, untouched by the horrors I had endured. My breath caught. My hands itched to reach her, to hold her, but the world seemed too loud, too bright, and unreal.
