Chapter 4

AMARA'S POV

"Before we head to your house, can we make a stop somewhere?" I asked Sebastian.

I looked at him to see if he’d agree. I needed to buy something that Aunt Romina would surely like.

"Where? Why?" he said curtly.

"At the flower shop. Can we?" I looked at him with pleading eyes. I hoped it would work—after all, I rarely get a chance to use my puppy eyes.

"Buying flowers for Aunt Romina?" Kolin, who was in the backseat, leaned forward.

"Yes… hopefully," I replied, keeping it short.

I glanced at Seb again. "Is that okay?" I asked once more. If he said no, it would be fine. I understood him—maybe he was tired, and I didn’t want to trouble him. I just needed to do this, so I could at least give his mother something.

I smiled when he nodded. He started the car, but before looking at the road, he turned to look at me—making me wonder why.

"YOU think she’ll like it?" I asked, pointing at the flowers and seedlings I had bought. Aunt Romina loved flowers. She had a garden at the back of their mansion, which she cared for herself. That’s why I got her sunflower seeds I hadn’t seen any in her garden. And the fresh flowers? I was sure she’d put them in vases to decorate the house.

"Did you like them?" Seb asked in return. I raised an eyebrow at him.

Just then, the shop florist arrived with the flowers I had ordered. She greeted us with a wide smile.

"Of course, sir. Ma’am will love them—they’re from you," she said. She even glanced at me, teasingly.

My cheeks suddenly flamed, and I felt my embarrassment rising.

"Ah, no—I’ll buy them. I have someone I want to give them to," I stammered.

Even with the air conditioning in the shop, I could feel myself starting to sweat.

"Oh, sorry! I just thought Sir was buying them, ma’am. I really thought you two were a couple," the shop assistant said, looking apologetic.

She probably assumed that because Seb had mentioned which flowers I wanted for Aunt Romina. She must have thought he was buying them for me.

"It’s okay. Really, no need to apologize," I said softly.

"Exactly. Even I might think you two were a couple if I weren’t his cousin," Kolin added, smirking.

I almost forgot she was even there. She was too busy scrolling on her phone to make a sound or be bothered.

"How much for all of these?" Seb asked, already holding the flowers before they were even paid for.

"I’ll be the one to pay, Seb," I said firmly.

He froze, hand pausing over his credit card. I glared at him, and when our eyes met, he just shrugged—clearly surrendering.

---

"OH, it’s so nice to see you again, darling," Aunt Romina said.

She had actually been waiting at the main door when Kolin called to say we were almost there. She walked toward me and hugged me tightly. Seb’s arm, which had been around my waist, fell away. I hugged Aunt Romina back.

"Me t—" I couldn’t finish my words because Seb spoke first.

"It’s only been a week since Amara came here, Mom. Just one week," he said.

I was used to Aunt Romina. Every time I visited her house, she always reacted this way. To her, a single week felt like a year or more. But that’s what I loved about her. I knew she genuinely cared for me.

"Yes, Aunt. Let’s not get too exaggerated," Kolin added.

Aunt Romina merely frowned at him. She straightened herself elegantly and pointed her fingers at Seb and Kolin. She was about to say something but took a deep breath instead, choosing not to continue.

"Come with me, darling. I want you to help me prepare the food," she said softly.

I felt a surge of happiness at her words. I was about to step away from Seb when she spoke again.

"Mom..."

We paused. Aunt shot Seb a quick, sharp look.

"We’re just going to the kitchen, Sebastian. We’ll be back soon," she said, raising her eyebrow at her son.

I thought Seb would finally stay quiet, but he smirked and spoke again.

"Will that take you too long, Mom?" His question almost made me laugh.

It was as if he was asking where we were going, even though we were only heading to the kitchen. I wanted to say something but held back—I wanted to see Seb’s reaction. He seemed a little annoyed, though I wasn’t sure why.

"Just a moment, Sebastian. You need to learn to wait," Aunt said, her tone serious this time.

Everything went silent. Even Kolin stayed quietly by Seb’s side.

"Of course. I can wait, Mom," he replied.

My breath caught when his eyes met mine after he said those words.

"Come here, darling. I want you to taste what I’m cooking."

I quickly went to Aunt Romina. She handed me a spoonful of soup. I blew on it before sipping, then lifted my hand and gave her a thumbs up.

"This garlic butter steak is delicious… It's Seb’s favorite."

"Yes, darling. You really know my son well," she said warmly.

"I just learned it from Kolin. We’ve been friends for three years, but I feel like there’s still so much I don’t know about Seb… I want to know him better." I smiled shyly.

"Don’t worry, hija. I’m here. So if you want to know anything about Sebastian, just ask me." Aunt patted my shoulder as she spoke.

"Thank you, Aunt," I said softly.

"You know, when the day comes that Seb gets married, I hope his wife can cook—especially his favorite food."

She looked at me with a sparkle in her eyes. I didn’t know why, but I forced a smile. I almost wanted to lightly hit myself for blushing.

I straightened up and tried to speak confidently. "I think Seb will find someone like you, Aunt. Someone who knows how to cook and also manage the household."

Aunt Romina turned off the stove before looking at me fully.

"You can cook too, right? And Sebastian told me you help your house helpers with chores," she said at length.

I was taken aback. It was normal for Seb to mention my help at home to his mom, since we were friends… but somehow, it felt different coming from her.

Aunt Romina didn’t look away until I answered.

"Y-Yes," I stammered.

I looked down and fiddled with my hands. I didn’t know where this conversation with Aunt Romina was leading. I felt nervous.

"You’re just like me, darling. We’re kind of alike."

Her words made me stop fidgeting with my hands.

"Mom."

I instantly lifted my head at Seb’s voice.

"You really can’t wait. Alright, darling, go join Sebastian. We’re almost done here."

"Okay, Aunt."

But before I could step toward Seb, Aunt Romina spoke again. "Please bring this shrimp and chicken salad to the table," she said, smiling.

I took the shrimp while handing the chicken salad to Seb.

"Thank you," I murmured as I sat down.

Seb had pulled out the chair for me.

Just as I settled, Aunt Romina arrived, holding the plate of garlic butter steak she had just cooked.

I felt Seb rise. He took the bowl from Aunt Romina and placed it himself on the table.

"Are you going to sleep here, darling?"

"Ah… I didn’t bring any clothes," I answered.

I didn’t want to say yes, and I didn’t want to say no either. I didn’t want her to expect that I would stay here. So I chose the safest answer.

"You have some in my closet. You left them here last time."

My head snapped toward Seb. I was shocked. There was no hesitation on his face—only seriousness. I immediately glanced at his mother. Out of the four of us, she was the one most likely to misinterpret Seb’s words.

"H-how?" Aunt Romina asked, wide-eyed.

I couldn’t tell if it was surprise, excitement, or something else in her expression.

I felt shy and cleared my throat before explaining. "I showered in Seb’s room last time I was here," I clarified.

"Oh, I thought… maybe something would happen," she said in a disappointed tone.

"Mom," Seb warned her.

"I’m just kidding, son. I’m sorry, darling. I just really want to have a grandchild already."

"I understand, Aunt." I said, avoiding everyone’s gaze.

The truth was, I felt so self-conscious. My cheeks burned as if I had a fever.

"When are you going to give me a grandchild, Sebastian? I’m bored at home. Your father won’t let me work," she complained.

Sebastian put down his utensils. "I told you, Mom, there’s a right time for that. I’m just waiting for her to be ready."

I froze mid-bite at his words. I pretended to be interested in their new topic.

'I’m just waiting for her to be ready.' It was only a few words, but why did it affect me like this? He didn’t say a name—just her.

"Really? So, who’s this lucky girl?" Aunt Romina asked excitedly.

"Do I know her, Sebastian?" Kolin joined the conversation this time, curious. I didn’t respond.

He just shrugged, ignoring them. He was about to start eating again when he looked at me and smiled. I couldn’t smile back. My heart felt like it was being squeezed. I felt pain I couldn’t explain.

He’s liked someone for a long time…

Chapter 5

AMARA’S POV

I unconsciously sat up on the bed, my mind replaying the conversation earlier between Seb and Auntie. They were talking about someone—probably a woman. And I’m not deaf or stupid not to understand what they were talking about.

I’m Seb’s best friend. How come I didn’t know he likes someone? Why am I not updated about his love life? Have I been too busy lately?

Well, it’s understandable. After all, we’re graduating from college in just two months.

I was lost in thought when I heard the door open.

“What are you thinking about?” Kolin asked.

I shook my head. “N-nothing.”

“Fine, if you don’t want to share. That’s okay.”

She was about to leave when I called out to her. “Kolin… D-does Seb like someone?”

She walked toward me and sat beside me on the bed.

“As far as I know, yes. Why?”

I immediately looked away when her eyes met mine. I couldn’t bring myself to meet her gaze.

“It’s nothing. I just… didn’t know,” I said with a sigh.

She sighed softly too. “You can tell me anything, Amara. I promise whatever we talk about here stays in this room.” She held my hand gently.

I looked at her and spoke without hesitation. “I—I love Seb.”

“Okay. And?…”

“Kolin, I said I love your cousin—Sebastian,” I repeated, since she didn’t even look surprised by my confession.

“What? You think I’m against it?” she said, raising a brow.

“That’s your reaction?”

She stood up but didn’t move away, placing her hands on her waist as she looked down at me with both eyebrows still raised. “What do you expect me to do, Amara? I’ve known it for a long time. You’re the only one who keeps denying your feelings for him.”

My eyes widened in shock. Shouldn’t she be the one surprised by my confession? So she’s known all along what I’ve been hiding.

“Then, you’re really not—”

She shook her head and smiled genuinely. “Of course not. You know, I’ve been your number one fan since the start—of you and Seb. I’ve been waiting for the day you’d finally admit your feelings for him.”

I bit my lip, trying to hold back my tears. But in the end, they fell anyway.

“I’m sorry. I had my hesitations. He’s my best friend and you’re my best friend too. I was just scared of losing both of you.”

She squeezed my hand and sat back beside me. “Do you have plans to tell him?” she asked gently.

“I know it’s not really a girl thing to do, but yes—I’ll confess to him.”

I think it’s time to tell Seb how I truly feel. It’ll take a lot of courage to do it, even without knowing what might happen afterward. But I’ll do it because it’s the right thing. I just hope our friendship doesn’t get ruined because from the very beginning, that’s what I’ve valued most.

“Really? When and where?” she asked, excitement gleaming in her eyes.

“I’m not sure yet… maybe after graduation.”

I was stunned when she suddenly pulled me into a hug.

“That’s my best friend!”

---

“PUT on your seatbelt, Amara,” I heard Seb say. But I didn’t follow him right away. I was busy searching for my wallet inside my bag.

I rushed out of the house earlier. Seb woke up so early today. I don’t even know if I packed my wallet properly. I swear, he seems so eager to get to the university—even at this hour. Makes me want to stop sleeping over at his house.

“Huh? Wait, I’m still looking for something.”

I stopped searching and smiled when I finally found it—it was tucked inside one of my notebooks.

I turned to Seb. “What were you say—”

Our lips met.

My eyes widened. My heart completely froze the moment I felt the softness of his lips against mine. I didn’t move. Neither did he.

The kiss lasted for a full minute before I gently pushed him away.

“I—I’m sorry. I didn’t realize your face was that close to mine,” I stammered, my voice trembling.

My heart wouldn’t stop pounding.

Gosh. I’m blushing. My face feels so hot.

He stole my first kiss! Sebastian was my first kiss!

“I’ll put your seatbelt on,” he said quietly before fastening it for me.

I faced forward, staring at the road. I couldn’t even look him in the eyes. When he finally leaned back, that’s when I realized I’d been holding my breath.

“Amara…”

I instantly looked at him with a warning gaze. “Stop. Let’s not talk about it.”

He ran his fingers through his hair—a gesture I knew too well. He was frustrated.

“But Amara…”

“P-Please… let’s just forget about it.”

I saw his face darken. His jaw tightened as he looked away. I cleared my throat and turned my eyes toward the window instead.

But the truth is, my heart was still racing. I couldn’t stop thinking about how his lips felt against mine.

“A-are you mad?” I asked the moment we stepped out of his car.

The cool morning breeze brushed against my skin as I looked around the university grounds.

“Seb…”

He stopped and faced me. “I’m not, okay…” he said before walking away again.

He said he wasn’t mad but his actions said otherwise. And I didn’t want to believe the reason forming in my head. He said he wasn’t angry, yet his face clearly showed otherwise!

“Really? That’s what you call not mad? Your eyebrows are practically touching each other,” I said, frustrated and slightly out of breath from following him.

“I need to go. Let’s just talk later,” he said coldly.

That tone… I hated hearing that tone from him. Because when Seb’s voice turns cold, it means he’s either upset or angry with me.

“But—”

“Please, Amara.”

I let out a sigh and nodded. “Fine. We’ll talk later. You said it yourself,” I reminded him.

He just nodded before walking away. I exhaled heavily and tore my gaze from his back.

You’re so annoying, Seb!

Chapter 6

AMARA’S POV

“What? Did I hear that right?” I scratched my head as Jazzy hysterical question echoed in the room.

Her eyes were wide, his mouth hanging open. Was he really that shocked?

“Oh, I told you so! You even denied it when I asked you before,” he said, still sounding overly excited.

The sound of the door closing and locking filled the room. We were now in the club room because I wanted to tell them something important—something I’d been keeping to myself for too long. I was finally going to admit what I truly felt for my best friend, Seb.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t want you to know yet. I wasn’t sure how to tell you.”

“Because you think we’d judge you?” Kolin asked gently, her eyes calm and sincere as they met mine.

“We’re your friends. Do you really think we’re that kind of people?” There was a trace of hurt in her voice.

“I’m sorry, but you can’t blame me. I’m… I’m just scared.” Tears were starting to form in the corners of my eyes, but I held them back. I didn’t want them to see me cry.

“Hey, girl! You’re a girl, and Sebantian is a guy—so it’s totally normal for you two to fall in love!” Jazz exclaimed, pointing at me like he was announcing breaking news.

Sometimes Jazz could be so dramatic. If I had a roll of tape, I would’ve stuck it over his mouth already. I was starting to regret ever saying he was different from other talkative gay guys.

“Right. I agree with you, Jazz,” Kolin added, and the two even shared a knowing look.

“Hey! Don’t you dare cry!” Kolin scolded when she noticed the tears welling up in my eyes. She was facing me, while Jazz stood behind me, so of course she could easily notice.

I rolled my eyes. “I won’t, okay? I’m holding it in.”

She nodded approvingly. “Good. You shouldn’t be crying over my cousin just yet.”

“Wait, when did you even start liking him?” Jazz suddenly asked.

I froze for a moment, then smiled. Jazz adjusted her seat as if preparing to hear a story.

“For a long time,” I said without hesitation.

“When exactly?” he pressed, annoyed by my vague answer.

“When I got hospitalized because of Claire. He promised me then that he’d always protect me and never leave my side.” A soft smile touched my lips. Every time I remembered that moment, I couldn’t help but smile and blush.

The emotions I once tried so hard to hide were finally free to show—at least to my friends.

“He promised you that?” I wasn’t sure what Kolin meant by her tone, but I ignored it and answered anyway. “Yes. You were with us when he said it, weren’t you?”

She nodded slowly. “Yeah, I was there… maybe I just didn’t hear it clearly.”

“Seriously? You’ve been keeping those feelings for so long. But are you sure you’re ready to confess to him?” Jazz asked, sounding half amazed, half curious.

“Yes, I’m ready. There’s no turning back. Even if he can’t return my feelings.” I smiled faintly, though it felt bittersweet.

Honestly, I didn’t know how I would feel if Seb didn’t feel the same way. I’d respect him, of course—but I couldn’t promise I wouldn’t get hurt. That’s just how love works sometimes; you love, and you get hurt.

“I doubt that,” Kolin suddenly said.

My head lifted at once, my heart skipping a beat.

“You think he’ll like me back?” I asked eagerly.

I looked straight into her eyes, waiting for her answer, but she said nothing. It was Jazz who spoke instead.

“What about you? What do you think?” he asked softly.

Our eyes met, and I saw genuine concern in his expression. I just lowered my head and shrugged.

What would they say if they knew that Seb and I… well, I didn’t even know what to call our situation right now. Were we fighting? Were we okay? Whatever it was, I wasn’t ready to tell them. I was sure Sebastian and I would fix it soon anyway.

When I looked up again, both of them were staring at me with worried eyes. I gave them a small smile and said quietly,

“I don’t know. But I do hope he will.”

---

“I’M sorry.”

I stared at him, confused, then glanced back at the flowers he was holding. Seb was standing there, holding a bouquet—giving it to me, apparently.

“Are those… for me?”

“Who else would they be for?” His tone sounded a little sarcastic, though I knew he didn’t mean it that way.

“But why are you giving me flowers? And why are you saying sorry?” I kept my voice light and innocent. Of course, I had a hunch about why he was doing this, but I wanted to hear it straight from him.

“I’m sorry if I acted like a jerk this morning,” he said seriously.

Even while apologizing, his brows were still furrowed. I couldn’t tell if he was being completely sincere or just awkward. But instead of getting annoyed, I actually found it… cute.

"I understand. Maybe you just weren’t in the mood earlier.” I smiled sweetly as I took the bouquet from him. I looked at the flowers, brought them closer, and smelled them.

“You’re forgiven,” I said softly.

Even though, honestly, I wasn’t entirely sure what he was apologizing for. Had we really fought? Or was it just a misunderstanding? Everything between us felt so confusing lately.

After a while, when I had enough of admiring the flowers, I looked back at him—and froze.

He was staring at me. Not just looking, but really looking. His gaze was steady and focused, like I was the only thing that existed in his world at that moment. I wasn’t stupid. I knew he had been watching me for a while now.

I cleared my throat, hoping to ease the tension that suddenly filled the air. His stare was making my heart race in a way I couldn’t control.

“Seb?”

With just one blink, a smile curved on his lips. “You like it?”

“Uh-huh. You’re so sweet, Sebastian. Thank you…” I smiled at him—this time, a genuine one.

Then, out of nowhere, he reached for me. His hands gently but firmly wrapped around my waist, pulling me closer. A wave of electricity ran through my whole body. He was holding me so close, I could almost feel his heartbeat.

My eyes widened in surprise as he leaned in and whispered near my ear, his voice low and warm.

“You’re always welcome, my Amara.”
