My Ex Broke Our Daughter's Hearing Aid, Then Begged Her New Daddy for a Contract Chapter 1

CLAIRE'S POV

I was handing a tiny blue hockey helmet to a dad and his twin boys when a hand closed around my lanyard and yanked.

The plastic badge bit into my collarbone. I looked up into a face I hadn't seen in person for almost a year.

Brandon Kessler. My ex-husband, once the best young defenseman in the league, and the father of my daughter.

He smiled for the room, and his grip tightened until my collarbone ached.

"Charity work?" he said, loud enough for half the rink to hear. "Is this what you do when the alimony runs out?"

Phones lifted all around the sign-in area. The air smelled like sanitized rubber mats and the steaming hot cocoa from the station behind me. Somewhere a kid laughed, then stopped.

Behind Brandon, Nicole Pryce stood in a cream silk blouse, angling her pink phone case to get both of us in the frame. His publicist. His girlfriend. The woman who used to call me "babe" while she rewrote my family out of his press kit.

Five years ago, when Brandon shredded his knee and the doctors said he might never skate again, I turned down a permanent position at a children's hearing center so I could drive him to rehab every morning. I remembered him in that hospital bed, gripping my hand, telling me he'd always stand beside me and Lily. No matter what.

I didn't bring any of that up now.

"Get your hand off my badge," I said.

I pulled the lanyard out of his fingers, set it straight against my chest, and turned back to the dad with the twins.

"Sorry about that. They're both registered. Have fun out there."

The father nodded quickly and steered his boys away.

Brandon didn't leave. He slapped a glossy sheet of paper onto the sign-in table, right on top of my tablet. His face stared up from the page, mid-slapshot, above a list of stats that stopped three seasons ago.

"Julian Reed is here today," he said. "I saw his car out front."

"Mr. Reed is a guest of the foundation," I said.

"He owns the Harbor Wolves, Claire. He needs a veteran on the blue line, and I'm the biggest name at this whole event." He leaned in close, his cologne heavy over the cocoa. "Get me in front of Reed. You owe me that much."

I almost laughed.

Nicole stepped up beside him, and the light caught the small gold pin on her blouse. Pryce Talent Group. Her own agency now.

I knew that logo. It had been on the email she sent the day she canceled Lily's follow-up appointment photos at the audiology clinic. *For the brand*, she'd written. A soft-focus father-daughter moment didn't fit his comeback image if the daughter wore hearing aids.

After that, every interview went the same way. When reporters asked about his family, Brandon said he was protecting his privacy. Then Lily's name disappeared from his bio completely.

Now Nicole was framing a row of kids in hockey jerseys behind him, using them as a backdrop for his big return.

"I don't owe you anything," I said.

"Five minutes," Brandon said. "You walk me over, you say I'm a friend of the program, and you're done."

I reached for the small acrylic placard beside the tablet and flipped it to face him. PRIVATE EVENT — INVITED GUESTS ONLY.

"The team has an independent manager who schedules player meetings," I said. "If you want one, call their office. No one cuts the line today."

"Claire—"

"I'm here for the children."

His jaw went tight. Nicole lowered her phone a few inches, as if she was waiting to see if this part was worth recording.

Brandon grabbed my upper arm.

He didn't drag me so much as shove me, hard and sideways, toward the rink-side steel railing. My knee struck the metal foot of the barrier, and pain shot straight up my thigh. I caught the rail with both hands before I went down.

"Mommy!"

Lily came running from the bench near the boards, her little skate guards clacking against the mat. She was six, small for her age, her dark braid bouncing against the back of her purple jersey.

She planted herself between me and her father and threw out her arms.

Then she signed with her hands while she spoke, her voice clear and careful the way her speech therapist had taught her.

"Please don't hurt Mommy."

Everything around us went quiet.

Brandon looked down at her. His eyes went to the lavender hearing aids tucked behind her ears, the ones she'd picked out herself because purple was "the bravest color."

He took half a step back.

Then his mouth curled.

"I don't have a daughter like that."

The words dropped onto the rubber mats and stayed there.

Lily didn't move. She didn't seem to understand yet, not fully. Her arms were still out and nobody was hugging her.

My fingers found the hearing aid case clipped to her belt loop. Brandon had bought it the day of her first fitting, along with the tiny silver skate charm dangling from the zipper. He'd held her on his good knee in the audiologist's office and kissed the top of her head.

*She's never going to wonder if her dad loves her,* he'd told me. *Never.*

Same mouth. Same voice.

I didn't ask him to explain. I was done asking him for anything.

I crouched down in front of Lily, ignoring the throb in my knee where the padded knee guard I'd strapped on for the clinic had shifted sideways. I cupped her cheeks so she'd see my face, then signed as I spoke.

"Look at me, sweetheart."

Her brown eyes found mine.

"You did so good. You're safe. I'm right here."

Her chin trembled, but she nodded.

I stood up slowly and turned to the nearest volunteer, a college girl named Becca who was frozen beside the cocoa station.

"Becca, take the kids to the far bench by the Zamboni doors," I said. "All of them. Now, please."

She snapped out of it and started herding the children away, her voice bright and shaky. "Okay, team, follow me! We're going to warm up on the other side!"

I pulled the sign-in tablet toward me and opened the incident log. My fingers were steady. I typed the time stamp first, 10:42 a.m., then the location: sign-in area, west railing.

"Hey," I called to the security guard near the entrance. "Can you flag the footage from that dome camera?" I pointed up at the black CCTV bubble above us. "And the corridor camera too. I need it saved before anything gets overwritten."

He nodded and grabbed his radio.

Nicole scoffed. "Seriously? You're filing a report?"

"I'm documenting what happened," I said. "All of it."

Because I knew her. By lunch, she'd have a fifteen-second clip online of a bitter ex-wife making a scene at a charity event. I wasn't going to let her video be the only version.

Coach Martin Doyle limped over from the boards. He'd coached Brandon in juniors back when Brandon was still a sweet, scrappy kid from Buffalo. Now Martin ran our youth clinic, gray-haired and quiet, and Lily called him Coach Marty.

He didn't say a word to Brandon. He just pulled off his padded coach jacket and held it up like a curtain in front of Lily, blocking Nicole's lens.

Nicole stepped around it.

She crouched with her pink phone and pushed the camera almost against Lily's ear, close enough to fill the screen with lavender plastic.

"Wow," she said sweetly. "Those really sell the sad story, don't they? She's a natural."

Lily flinched and grabbed my leg.

I put my hand up between the phone and my daughter's head. "Stop recording her."

Brandon's gaze dropped to my raised hand, then to Lily. Something cold settled in his expression, like he'd just made a decision.

"Brandon," Nicole said, still filming. "If they want to play the victim, let's see what's real."

She smiled down at Lily.

"Take off the prop, sweetheart. Let them see what your mom is selling."

Brandon reached past my hand, his fingers heading straight for the hearing aid behind Lily's ear.

I lifted my arm to shield her.

"Do not touch her."

His hand didn't stop.
