Tori
"Good morning, Tori. How was your evening?" I had just walked onto the unit and was heading for the nurse’s station to put my bag down when I heard Tammy, a fellow newcomer nurse and my best friend, greet me.
"Morning, Tammy. It was good. I spent it with my father at the lake. How was yours?" She stood there grinning like an alley cat before throwing her left hand in my face. I grabbed it, thinking she would swat at me, when I saw a bright, glittery flash.
"Oh my God, he did it!" I looked at her left finger and saw the diamond reflecting the fluorescent lights. It was beautiful, a princess-cut stone surrounded by smaller green stones in a platinum setting. "Congratulations, it's beautiful!" She smiled brightly and giggled a bit before returning her hand to look at it herself.
"Thank you! He took me to our favorite little restaurant and then surprised me by taking me to the county fair. He knelt atop the Ferris wheel and popped the question under the full moon. Eric was so romantic!" She sighed as if remembering the moment, then looked at me with a questioning look. I sadly smiled in return and sat down at the desk. She gently pulled up a chair and sat next to me. Have you spoken to him lately? Gently rubbing my arm, her voice was soft and apologetic.
No, I called and left a message last week, but he hasn't returned it yet. Not even a text. I have no idea what happened. I guess it just wasn't meant to be." I smiled at her and began grabbing charts to review the notes from the last shift. Tammy sat there a moment longer, giving my arm a supportive squeeze, then started working on her charts. "Don't worry, he'll come around. Maybe he had an emergency.
Tammy and I were roommates in nursing school. It was a rocky start, but once we understood the little personality quirks, things improved. Five years later, we graduated at the top of our class, specializing in the burn unit. We both worked our asses off, helping, tutoring, and supporting each other so we could apply to Hidden Falls Medical Center. It was a top-ranked trauma center in the southern US—our dream job. Luckily, in our final year of school, an internship in the burn unit opened up, and with the help of a family friend, we both applied. Unable to choose, they created two internship positions. We were both ecstatic. We would be working together at the best hospital in the south.
Tammy was like a sister to me, and I was like a sister to her. She was there for me when my mother died of breast cancer in our second year of school. She was also my rock this past year, when the guy I was dating suddenly disappeared without a word. I thought we were doing well, getting closer, and progressing in our relationship, but apparently, I was wrong. She keeps telling me I am worth so much more and that he misses out on the best thing he'll ever get. Her encouragement made me smile and feel better, enough to get me through my day.
I spent the next hour walking through my patients' rooms, checking vitals, and adjusting their bedding. I had five burn patients under my care. I would measure their healing progress and change their bandages. After administering my patients' morning medications, I returned to my desk and prepared for an incoming transfer.
About an hour later, our new patient was settled into their room, and all the necessary IVs and medications were in place. With my checklist completed and satisfied, I quietly left the room, closing the door behind me.
Time passed quickly as the nurse tended to the patient’s needs. Only immediate family could visit for an hour, wearing gowns, masks, and gloves. After explaining the reasoning, they obliged. Later, Dr. MacDonald visited and asked about the health of my father, who is still grieving the loss of my mother. We sat there briefly, discussing the internship and how Tammy and I were settling into the new ward. Once again, I thank him for the opportunity and assistance in securing this position. He replied that he was happy to help and glad that I was doing well in the new place. He starts to stand up, then hesitates and turns to me.
"Tori..." I turned to look at him, and his expression was apprehensive and questioning.
"Yes? Something wrong?" I asked, concerned.
"No, no. I am just wondering something." I looked at him expectantly, waiting for him to explain.
Something has come up, and I'd like to discuss it with you. Would you mind coming to my office after your shift today?"
"Of course, Dr. MacDonald. I should arrive around 3:30. He nods his head and stands.
"That will be fine, thank you." He smiled one more time, turned, and walked off. I watched him leave and wondered what that was about. Mrs. Nixon interrupted my thoughts by stepping behind the desk and dropping several charts before me.
"If you're done gossiping now, maybe you could update some of your charts, hmm?" She turned and walked away before I had a chance to reply. Shaking my head at the blatant rudeness of my charge nurse, I grabbed a chart and began reviewing the notes, jotting down my findings.
About an hour later, I finished my chart review and began my afternoon check on my patients. I was dispensing their medication and lunch as ordered by their physicians. I went in to check on our new patient and saw that he was still unconscious, but his vital signs were good. Slowly and carefully, I inspected his wounds and their healing progress and changed any soaked bandages. All in all, he was doing quite well.
I returned to the desk to complete my final notes and prepare my report for the next shift. I saw Tammy walk in and sit next to me. She had tears in her eyes and a frown.
"Tammy? What happened?" She turned to me slowly and took a deep breath.
Mrs. Campbell has just passed away. Shaking her head, she let a tear fall, and a quiet sob left her.
"Oh Tammy, I'm so sorry. " I put a supporting hand on her shoulder and held her hand. It took her a moment to compose herself before she dried her tears. Half an hour later, Tammy finished her reports and returned them to the rack.
"Hey Tori, after a long emotional day, we need a night out. What ya think?" She had a slightly cheery and hopeful look on her face. I was tired and unsure I wanted to go out, but if it made her friend feel better, she was all in.
"Sure, that sounds great. You could even bring Eric as our bodyguard." Her face brightened at that.
"That sounds like a good idea. I'll give him a call and let him know."
"I'll catch up with you later. I have a meeting with Dr. MacDonald after the shift."
Okay, I'll call you later around 8.
"Sounds good, see you later!" Tammy walked off towards the locker rooms, and Tori grabbed her bag and headed to the elevator for the ride up to the executive offices’ fifth floor. Once there, she stepped out and walked down the hallway toward her mentor's office. Just before arriving, she overheard a bizarre phone conversation he was having, and suddenly a knot formed in her gut.
"Yes, Alpha, I’ll talk to her soon and share all the details. I believe her background will be invaluable." There was a brief pause as he responded to questions. "I’ll call you tomorrow with an answer. I hope so… I’ll do my best. Goodbye, Alpha." She heard the phone placed in the cradle and hesitated, wondering whether to enter. Alpha? Who was he speaking to? Her mind raced, questioning which Alpha it could be and if this meeting was related.
Realizing she had been standing there for too long, she raised her hand slowly, took a breath, and knocked on the door. There was a brief pause, and then he answered.
"Come in," he said lowly. Tori pushed the door open and stepped inside.
Hello, Doctor. You wanted to see me? He turned, flashed her a big smile, and walked towards her.
"Tori! Yes, yes, please come in. Have a seat. Can I get you anything? Tea, water, coffee?" He was a bit anxious but genuinely friendly.
"Water will be fine, thank you.” She sat in front of his large wooden desk and placed her bag on the floor at her feet. A moment later, he appeared with a water bottle and handed it to her.
"Thank you." She accepted the bottle and opened the cap. She took a large gulp, trying to calm her nerves before speaking.
"How was your shift today?" he asked, sitting at his desk and clasping his hands together.
"It went very well. I’m grateful for the opportunity, thank you. He smiled at that and nodded his head.
"Wonderful! I'm glad to hear it", he responded almost absent-mindedly. Tori grew a little uncomfortable and shifted in her seat. He started fidgeting in his seat, grabbing papers and stacking them neatly on his desk.
"Tori...." He started after taking a deep breath.
"Doctor...Gregory...is there something wrong? Is that why you wanted to see me?" He shook his head and slowly looked up before hesitantly continuing.
"Tori....I asked you here to ask for your help." Pausing, he took a sip of his water and sighed. ".... a friend of mine is having trouble caring for his nephew. He was caught in a fire about a year ago and has been dealing with the aftermath since."
"Oh my, that's terrible," Tori responded, her heart breaking for the family. "Is he...."
"The victim is his 25-year-old nephew, son of his late brother, who died in the same fire."
"I'm sorry to hear that, Gregory. What can I do?" He smiled at her. She was such a sweet young lady, always there to help a friend in need. Putting everyone before herself, doing whatever she could. However, she may change her mind, or even regret what he asks of her. He knows Tori has a past similar to his friend's and that she has been trying to avoid being anywhere near that circle, but he can think of no other way to help in this situation. Hopefully, she will set that aside, draw on her nurturing nature, and allow it to be.
"My friend, Colton, has no idea how to help his nephew out of his depression. He's had several specialists come and sit with him, but he refuses to talk to anyone. He was in a coma for six months and another three months, learning to walk and talk again. Although he is still undergoing physical therapy, he has made significant strides in his physical recovery. It’s more his mental capacity we're concerned about." Tori sat silent, waiting for him to continue, wondering how she could help. He said the nephew was doing well, regaining his physical strength, but his mental capacity needed help. This was not her expertise, but the next thing out of his mouth stunned her and explained why all in one breath.
Alpha Colton formally requests your assistance with his nephew, the soon-to-be Alpha Ronin of the Hidden Falls Pack.
Tori was frozen in her seat. She felt like the breath had been knocked out of her lungs. Alpha? Hidden Falls Pack? She thought she had left that world behind when her mother took her and ran from her biological father over 18 years ago! That world. The werewolf world. She'd never thought of looking for it, let alone walking back willingly into it, and yet, here she was, being asked by a close friend to go to the pack and help a wolf, an Alpha, return to his former self so that he could take back control of his birth pack. His rightful place since his father's passing. Her friend asked her to use her inner healing abilities to help his nephew.
She recalled fragments of her life with the wolves. Her father, Merrick, was the Alpha, and her mother, mated to him, became the Luna. They had a whirlwind romance that led to Tori's birth. However, her mother struggled with the restrictions imposed on her and Merrick's infidelity. One night, after finding Merrick in his office with another woman, she decided to leave. She packed a bag, dressed Tori warmly, and fled during one of Merrick's drunken episodes.
Since then, Tori and her mother have moved around until they found a place where she feels comfortable and safe. That's when they met Gregory. Her mother had applied for a nursing job at a small medical clinic in a tiny town, where Gregory was the department head, hours away from where they had fled. He took an immediate liking to her and hired her on the spot. Their friendship grew over the years, and he introduced her to a friend who would become her now-stepfather; they clicked right away. They married a couple of years later and have been happy ever since. He accepted her like his own daughter. Her stepfather, Chase, and her mother, Sara, were unable to have children, so Chase spoiled Tori. Ensured she was loved and cared for, provided with everything she could want or need. He was her support system while she was in college and after her mother passed two years ago.
But here she was, being asked to return to that world willingly to help an Alpha return to his former glory. Could she? Did she want to? Can she hold back her prejudices to help a person in need? She would need some time to think about it.
"Can you tell me about him?" She asked quietly.
"He only woke up three months ago. Physical therapy sessions are held four times a week, and they have tried to get him to speak with a therapist, but he hasn't been cooperative. That's where you come in. You have experience with burn victims and their emotional states. He refuses to discuss what happened, and they want to ensure he is stable enough to lead the pack. He hasn't properly mourned the loss of his father, and his mother is lost in her own grief, so she is of no help either."
Tori sat there, contemplating the situation and wondering if it was a good idea to accept the task. Furthermore, her unique ability to heal would be incredibly beneficial. She closed her eyes and shook her head slightly.
"I assume I would be staying at the house with him. What about my job here at the hospital? I worked hard to earn that position, and I don't want to give it up. How long will I be there?" Gregory rose from his desk and moved to sit in the chair beside Tori. He smiled softly at her and sighed.
"Yes, you will stay in the packhouse on the same floor as him and continue working here at the hospital. There's no need to worry about that." He took her hands in his and gently patted them. "I know this is a lot to ask, considering your past. But..." He looked down, taking a deep breath before continuing, "...I wouldn't ask if I didn't think you were the best person for the job. You have such a gentle and caring nature, as well as the patience of a saint! I truly believe you will achieve incredible things and help him overcome his depression, bringing him back to lead his pack." Tori looked down, worried, before she responded. “He only woke up three months ago. "Can I sleep on it? Can I give you an answer tomorrow?" Slowly raised her head to look at him. He gave her a big smile and nodded.
"Of course! Take some time and sleep on it. Give me a call tomorrow. If you have any questions beforehand, let me know."
"Thank you, Gregory. I will give you my answer tomorrow, then." They both stood and shook hands. He walked her to the door and opened it for her. Before stepping out, he stopped her.
"Tori. Please give it some real thought. Alpha Colton wouldn't have called to ask if he had other options. I know this is not an ideal situation for you, returning to the wolf world, but I genuinely believe you are what they need to help the young Alpha get back on the right track to healing his mind and soul. She couldn't help but think that statement had a hidden meaning, but she held her tongue and smiled at him.
“Thank you, Gregory. I'll let you know.” With that, she walked out of the office, headed down to the parking garage, and drove home.
Tori POV
Tori heads back to the bar and meets Tammy and Eric at the door.
"Tori! Are you okay? What happened?" She puts her arm around her friend and leads her back inside.
"I found Jonas." Tammy's eyes widened, and she looked behind her to see if he was still out there. "He was... fooling around with another woman in his truck." Tears fell down her face as they found a table at the back, away from most of the crowd. Taking a seat, Eric buys another round of drinks for them.
"Oh, honey, I'm so sorry you had to see that. Did he say anything to you?" She asked as she handed her friend a cocktail napkin. Tori dotted her eyes and shook her head.
"I don't want to hear his excuses! The woman had her head in his lap; that's all I needed to know." Fresh tears fell as Eric returned with the drinks and stood beside Tori.
"Do you want me to go kick his ass?" He asked seriously. Tori raised her head to look into his eyes and saw he was not joking. For a brief moment, Tori saw his eyes flash black, then return to their bright green.
"No!" Her heart raced momentarily, and she realized what Eric was; she didn't need any bloodshed today. "Thank you, but no. I'm done with him! He can do what he wants now." Tammy gave her a sad smile and rubbed her arm.
"Well, let's have a drink and maybe..." Tammy wore a mischievous smile. "...we can do some karaoke!"
"Oh no, I couldn't." Tori shrank in her seat and shook her head.
"Come on! You used to sing all the time at school! It made you feel better. I bet they even have your favorite song!" With that, she jumped up and ran to the DJ. Tori tried to grab her arm, but she was too quick and ran across the dance floor towards the DJ booth.
"I'm not getting out of this, am I?" She said aloud, watching her friend.
"Doesn't look like it." Tori took her shot and tossed it back before turning towards Eric.
"I appreciate your offer, but I don't think that would've been a good idea. Too many people are watching." Eric stared pensively at her before answering.
"I am your friend. I love Tammy, and that means everything to her. You are a part of her life, and now, mine too. If you need anything, let me know." He answered with a small smile. He put his arm around her shoulders and hugged her gently. "Just say the word, and I'll kick his ass back to wherever that slime ball came from!" Tori let go of a bright smile and shook her head.
"I'm good-no more Jonas. Let's have fun tonight." Eric smiled and pulled his arm back.
"Now that's the spirit!" He grabbed his glass and downed his shot as Tammy returned to the table.
"You guys, OK?" She asked tentatively before wrapping her arms around Eric.
"Yeah, Eric was just offering his hitman services," Tori answered with a chuckle. Tammy made a severe face and stared at Tori.
"You let us know, and we'll both do some ass-whooping!" Tammy retorted while punching her palm with her fist. Eric and Tori just laughed and took another shot.
"Well.... are we doing this or what?" Tori shouted while standing up and looking around at the bar full of drunk patrons.
"After this song, he'll call you up, and you can let loose!" Tori nodded and continued scanning the crowd. It was full of people drinking, dancing, and having a good time. Then, she spotted a man standing in the corner next to the bar with his arms folded across his chest. He was staring right at her. Her heart started racing, and her breathing picked up. It wasn't fear she felt, but a sense of... longing or need... maybe? It was weird. She doesn't recognize him, but she feels like she knows him.
Slowly, she stepped towards him, but the DJ announced to the speaker that a guest had requested to sing. The crowd clapped and shouted as Tammy pushed me towards the small stage at the front of the dance floor. She looked at the man, then continued toward the DJ.
She hesitantly stepped up on stage and slowly turned towards the waiting crowd. Taking the microphone in her hand, she nodded at the DJ to start the song. She waited for the intro and took a deep breath.
The music started, and she slowly fell into the rhythm of the sexy and sultry beat. She was swaying her body and rolling her head back and forth in an erotic rhythm.
As she started singing her favorite song, "Ignite," she felt herself calm down and relax a little. She was never afraid of public speaking or being in front of groups, but she hadn't done it in a long time. She looked out onto the dance floor and saw people slowly beginning to dance to the music's rhythm. She placed the microphone back in its holder and started dancing, slow and seductive, her hips and legs moving. Losing herself in the music and the words, she belted out the chorus in her firm, confident voice. Closing her eyes, she could feel the music running through her, relaxing her even more, becoming one with the words. She lost all sense of her surroundings until a warm, comfortable presence appeared. She smiled to herself, expecting Tammy to be up there with her; she opened her eyes. To her surprise, it wasn't Tammy. It was the man from across the bar. He stood at the back of the dance floor, staring up at her with his arms at his sides as if restraining himself from approaching her. As she continued, she stared into his eyes and was lost in the ocean-blue orbs before her. She quickly noticed the rest of him as he towered over everyone there, his broad, muscular chest tapering down to long, sturdy legs that hinted at power beneath his dark jeans. His face, oh, that face was created by the Gods themselves! Solid and gentle features, but screamed power and authority. High cheekbones that bowed down to a sharp jawline, with firm and sensually tempting lips. His dark hair landed in waves just below his shoulder line. He had a powerful aura about him, one that made her feel safe but cautious. The man screamed sexy and dangerous all in one. A gorgeous specimen of a man, much like a rugged mountain man. He was too beautiful, way out of her league. Yet, here he was, staring at her without thinking of the outside world. But the look in his eyes almost made her stop and forget what she was doing. He showed no emotion on his handsome face, only eyes of determination and... longing? Does this man know her from somewhere? Tori was sure she'd never met him, and yet...
The song was coming to an end; in the final chorus, she sang as if singing to him with a hint of sexy need while swinging her body and hips around to the last beat.
When she was finished, he took a small step forward as the crowd around her clapped and whistled their approval of her talents.
"That was amazing! Well done! Miss Tori, everyone!" The DJ blared across the speakers as Tori's cheeks blushed, and she gave a small wave. She returned to provide the DJ with a thumbs-up before playing an upbeat techno track. Turning around to step off the stage, Tori noticed the beautiful man was gone. Looking left and right, she saw no sign of him and felt disappointed. Carefully stepping off the stage, she returned to her friends and sat.
"That was fantastic!" Eric shouted while handing Tori a mug of beer. She gracefully accepted it and took a large swig.
"Haven't lost your touch, amazing as always!" Tammy gushed as she tapped her mug against Tori's.
"Thanks, guys, that felt awesome!" Taking another swig of her beer, she glanced towards the door and saw the eyesore from before. Going entirely still, frozen in her chair, she stared at the man and his bimbo.
"Tori?" Tammy asked, concern filling her voice. "What's wrong?" Turning her head, she saw what Tori was staring at and immediately became angry. "That son of a bitch!" She slammed her mug down on the table and was going to confront the guy, but Eric grabbed her arm before she could take a step.
"Babe, calm down." Flaring her nostrils and trying to control her anger at the man who so profoundly hurt her friend, she stood still.
"Eric...." She mumbled low, and they all turned to see Jonas facing off with a giant man. Eric swore quietly under his breath.
Tori gasped as she saw the beautiful man from before glaring at Jonas. They had words, and their body language made them unfriendly. The man towered over Jonas. He was enormous and gorgeous! Jonas was six feet, so the man must be at least three or four inches taller. Tori couldn't help but admire the man standing square with Jonas. His arms were at his sides, and his fists were balled tight. His hair flowed wildly down his back, and he stood tall and proud, unafraid of anything. She so desperately wanted to rub her hands up and down his chest and through his hair and....wait, wait, wait. "Where the hell did that thought come from? I don't even know him! Oh, but I want to...." Tori shook her head and turned towards Tammy.
"Who is that guy?" Eric looked nervously at Tammy, then at Tori.
"He's a friend of mine. Nice guy." The girls looked at the man, their eyes wide.
"You know him?" Tammy asked.
"Yeah, we work together." Tori slowly turned to face Eric, her eyes narrowing. He shrugged slightly and looked down.
"His name is Victor." Tori returned to the scene before them and watched the man converse with Jonas, who was trying to step around him, his bimbo cowering behind him.
"Victor," Tori said breathlessly. She didn't think anyone could hear her, but Victor turned his head towards her and caught her eyes as if he did. Tori felt her heart racing and her breath slowly escaping. Those gorgeous eyes were looking right at her again. Not knowing what to do, Tori looked away and grabbed her mug of beer. He had caught her checking him out, and she couldn't face him.
"I think he's taking care of the problem." They all spun around to see Victor grab Jonas by the arm and lead him outside. They could hear shouting and... growling?
"What the hell was that?!" I shouted before taking off towards the door. Although she knew what it was, she didn't want any bloodshed here where others could see, and trying to explain would be even worse.
"Tori, wait!" But she ignored the calls for her and kept going outside until she found the two men squaring off, trying to intimidate each other. By the looks of it, Jonas was not doing an excellent job. Victor towered over him by a good three or four inches.
"It's none of your business, man; back off!" Jonas yelled at Victor. Jonas tried to walk around him, but Victor grabbed his arm again and pulled him back in front.
"It is my business! You need to take your sorry ass out of here before you regret it!" Jonas looked up and saw Tori standing there, wide-eyed, with anger on her face.
"Tori!" He yelled before skirting around Victor and running up to her. Grabbing both her arms in his, he started shouting in her face.
"Did you send him after me, huh? Are you trying to get rid of me by scaring me? Or having someone fight me?" He was shaking her, and he was so close she could feel his breath and spit from all his yelling. "You're such a bitch! I never did anything to you!" Before she knew it, his hand came across and slapped her cheek. She flew back onto the ground, hitting her head on the pavement. She felt him kick her in the leg before the sounds of pounding feet got louder. It all happened in a matter of seconds. She turned her head to see what was going on. That's when she heard the most deafening roar ever. Everyone froze. With her one eye now swollen shut, she could only see from the other eye, but it was fuzzy at best. Through the fog, she saw a prominent figure fighting with a smaller one in the distance. A moment later, it was quiet, and she lay her head back down and focused on her breathing. Her face was throbbing, and her leg was hurting as well.
A few moments later, Tori slowly sat up enough to look around and see that Victor had grabbed Jonas's shirt and was ready to punch him in the face. Anger raced through her soul and fire in her veins. Raising herself, she limped over to the two men and was ready to reveal her feelings. She placed her hand on Victor's arm and stared right at Jonas.
"I'm done with you, Jonas. I never want to see or speak to you again. Stay away from me." She spoke slowly and low through gritted teeth.
"Yeah? Or else what?" He asked with a ragged breath.
Tori tilted her head at him, then looked up at Victor. A slow, evil smile came across her face as she turned back to Jonas. Staring at him, she flashed her fiery amber eyes and returned to normal. His eyes widened as he realized what she was. He wasn't afraid, just shocked.
"You want to find out?" She dropped her hand from Victor, and he released his hold on the man's shirt. Jonas backed up and straightened his clothes. Shaking his head, he glared at Tori as he walked away towards his truck after grabbing his woman.
Tori watched as he started his truck, backed out of the spot, and drove away, leaving a cloud of dust in his wake. Taking a deep breath, she turned to find Victor gone, and Tammy and Eric walked towards her.
"You, okay?" Tammy asked, slipping her arm over her shoulder and rubbing her arm with the other one. Tori glanced around, but Victor was not in sight. Sadly, she turned to answer her friend.
"Yeah, I'm okay." Tori gently patted her face where he had slapped her and winced. "Eric, can you take me home, please?"
With her arm still around Tori's shoulders, Tammy guided her back to their SUV. Eric opened the doors for them. After they were all in and buckled, he started the engine and pulled out of the lot.
During the ride home, there was a comfortable silence as Tori leaned her head on Tammy's shoulder, soft music playing over the speakers.
When they arrived at her house, Eric helped her out of the truck and through the front door. She slumped on her couch as Tammy went into the kitchen to get ice for her face and hand, which had now become swollen and slightly bruised.
"Where did Victor go?" Eric glanced at her, then down at his feet. He slowly shook his head before answering.
"I don't know." Tori glared at him, telling him she didn't believe him. He sighed heavily and then turned towards her.
"Look, Tori, he wasn't supposed to show himself. Not yet, anyway. He is a friend of mine, so you don't have to worry about him. I can't explain anything right now, but I can soon. I promise."
"Does Tammy know?" He looked at her funny.
"Does she know about you?" Giving him a pointed look. He twisted his face like he didn't understand why she didn't know.
"Of course she does; she's my mate. I had to tell her. She's bound by the oath to keep the secret." Tori just nodded, took a deep breath, and slowly released it.
"Does she know about me?" she timidly asks, eyes down low. Eric looks at her with a sad face.
"Yes, I do," Tammy answers as she returns to the room with the ice. Sitting next to Tori, she places the wrapped ice bag on her hand and hands her another to put on her face. "I've known for quite a while." She says with a light sigh.
Speechless, Tori gapes at her in question.
"How? Why didn't you...?"
"Say anything?" Tammy finishes with her eyebrows raised. Well, I'm bound by oath not to reveal the secret, right? I only assume that means for all, not just Eric." Tori stares at her friend while holding an ice bag to her face, eyes wide. A million thoughts run through her mind about when and how she found out.
"Do you remember when you got that respiratory infection back in our second year?" Tori nods. "You were put on a ventilator and were in a coma for a week. They had no idea how to treat you. You weren't responding to normal methods or medicine. So, I contacted your dad, and he, in turn, called Dr. MacDonald to help. The hospital gave him privileges to treat you, and he gave you some super pill or something, and you got better. The point is, I didn't leave your side that entire week. I learned some of your history from your dad. Of course, he left the heavy stuff for you to tell, but since I wouldn't leave, he thought it best to tell me the basics and make me promise not to tell your secret, or it puts you in danger." Tori had tears in her eyes and sat quietly, listening to Tammy. Eric approached the couch, sat beside Tammy, and held her hand.
"All this time, you knew and didn't say anything...even to me." Tori closed her eyes as tears fell, then just shook her head.
"Why?"
"It was a secret. "She whispered, leaning in towards Tori. "I figured you'd tell when you were ready. I got the gist of it all from your dad, but when I met Eric, I couldn't deny it anymore. They are real. You are real. Eric is real. I love you guys more than anything and would never betray you like that." She sat back, smiling at Eric, and gently grabbed Tori's hand. "I'm pretty open-minded, so with the evidence right before me, I chose to accept it." Eric leaned over and placed a soft kiss on Tammy's head as he squeezed her hand. Tori nodded in acceptance of her answer.
"Who was that guy at the bar?"
"Victor? A friend of mine. Yes, he's a wolf too. You don't have to be afraid of him; he won't hurt you." Eric gave her a mischievous smile. "Besides, I think he kinda likes you." Tori snapped her head towards Eric and scrunched up her face.
"Puh-lease! The man is a God himself; why would he even......" Tori stopped short, realizing what she just said.
"A God, huh?" Eric answered teasingly. Tori just hid her face in embarrassment. Tammy chuckled at Tori and grabbed her hand.
"...And why not! You are beautiful, smart, sassy, and sexy! Everything a man could want and more!"
"Not," Tori thought back to her time with Jonas, when he had gotten up and left her without notice; she felt abandoned and humiliated. Tammy shot her a sad, knowing look.
"Oh, sweety, don't think about him. That douchebag wouldn't know a good thing if it sat on his face!" Tori screeched at this and covered her mouth with her hands.
"Tammy!" Eric laughed out loud beside Tammy, who just smiled with a determined nod.
"Well, he wouldn't! It's his loss."
After a few minutes of laughing and good-natured shoving, Tori's heart felt lighter, and her tears had dried up. She looked down at her hand and inspected it, slowly moving her fingers to see if it was broken.
"That was one hell of a punch you gave that fender. Did you see the dent you left?" Eric chuckled.
"Yeah, now I'm paying for it. I don't think it's broken, though. It'll certainly leave a mark in the morning. Speaking of which, I need to get some sleep. I have a busy day tomorrow. Dr. MacDonald asked me if I wanted to do private home care for his friend, and I need to answer him by tomorrow."
"What?!" Tammy spun with an incredulous look on her face. Tori sheepishly smiled before answering.
"Yeah, his friend has a nephew who was in a fire and is having trouble assimilating into the real world. He was caught in a fire and is struggling with the recovery process."
Tammy let out an exasperated breath and shook her head. Eric grunted in mild disapproval before speaking.
"Tori, who is this friend?" He gave her a knowing look, arms crossed.
"Umm... his name is Colton. His nephew, Ronin, was caught in a house fire. It's the same fire where he lost his father. Eric became stone-faced and dropped his arms. Glancing at Tammy, he questioned further.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm supposed to stay at their... "She closed her eyes and winced as she said the word. "...Packhouse." Tammy jumped to her feet and stared at Tori. Eric stood silent with wide eyes.
"Tori! Can't you be serious? That could be dangerous! You don't even know these people."
"They are friends with Dr. MacDonald. They can't be that bad."
"Tori, Colton is friends with Dr. MacDonald. I bet there is a lot that he doesn't know about him. Is the doctor aware of... "Tori slowly nodded her head.
"Yeah, he knows about them." Tori carefully stands, walks to the window, and stares outside. "This is what I do. I heal people. At least, I try to. Everyone deserves a chance to heal. I have made up my mind. I will talk with my dad about it tomorrow at lunch, but I will take him up on his offer. If he is coming to me, then it must be bad." Eric and Tammy looked at each other and then sighed. Tammy walked over and grabbed her hand.
"I know. I want you to be safe. Don't take any unnecessary chances."
"Don't worry. I'll do my research before I go." Tori turned and hugged her friend. Looking at Eric over her shoulder, she felt uneasy under his stare. It looked like he knew something but wasn't going to say it. She decided to worry about that later. Her head was pounding, and her leg was throbbing.
"Alright, sweety, we'll talk again tomorrow. You get some rest." Tammy pulled away and smiled sadly at her friend.
"Thank you both for being there tonight. I did have fun... "she shrugged her shoulders before slightly chuckling. Tammy chuckled with her, but Eric was quiet.
Tori walked them or limped to the door and said their goodnights.
Tori closed the door behind them and sighed. She still had many questions about what happened at the bar with Victor. Who was he? Why was he here? Why does he feel so familiar? She was too tired to dwell and would figure it out later. Right now, she wanted to sleep. But first, she tried calling her father to ask him to lunch. Even though it was late, she knew he would still be awake.
She picked up her phone, dialed her father's number, and let it ring. He answered after only two rings.
"Tori, honey? You, okay?" She chuckled to herself.
"Yeah, Dad, I'm okay. I was calling to see if you wanted to have lunch tomorrow, " she said as she curled up on her couch.
"That would be wonderful! You thinking dinner?"
"Yeah, we can go to George's Diner if you like."
"Sounds good." He hesitated for a moment, then continued. "You got something on your mind?" Tori sighed and quickly thought about saying anything. He always supported her decisions and guided her through the tough ones.
"I need to bend your ear about something."
"What is it?"
"I have to decide on a temporary job I was offered." She heard him sigh from the other end.
"What kind of job?" He asked skeptically.
"Dr. MacDonald asked me if I would help a friend of his. It seems his nephew is having trouble getting back to normal life."
"That doesn't sound so bad."
"His nephew is the future Alpha of the Hidden Falls Pack." She heard dead silence on the other end.
"They want you to heal him?" He asked abruptly.
"Sort of. He is struggling to return to mainstream life mentally. As far as I know, he is healed and attending physical therapy."
"Are you sure that is something you want to do?"
"I have no idea. That's why I would like to vent my pros and cons. You were always a good listener." He chuckled a little.
"You know I will always help. We'll talk about it tomorrow."
"Thank you, Dad; I'll meet you there at noon?"
"Sounds good, see you then. Good night, sweetheart."
"Good night, Dad. I love you."
"Love you too." She hung up, sat back on the couch, and sighed. Her hand and the side of her face started to throb a little. Slowly, she got up and headed into the kitchen to get a bottle of water and two painkillers. Tossing the pills in her mouth, she washed them with a gulp of water, replaced the bottle in the fridge, and headed towards the stairs.
Tori retreated to her bedroom to begin her evening routine before sleep. Removing her dress and shoes, she grabbed her green plaid pajama pants and a loose white tank top and disappeared into the bathroom. After brushing her teeth, washing her face, and combing her hair, she dressed in her pajamas and headed to bed. Crawling under the sheets and comforter, she set her alarm early the following day, lay her head down, and closed her eyes. The painkillers finally kicked in, and she was drifting off to sleep. The image of Victor came to mind, and she smiled. She was going to have some charming dreams tonight!
Victor POV
After hours of driving and following dead ends, I collapsed onto my hotel bed, feeling exhausted. I'd been surveilling women, hoping to find my missing friend, Tori, but all leads had led nowhere. My phone dinged when I was about to zone off to sleep. Blinking at the screen, I saw a message from my Gamma: "I found her." I bolted upright, heart racing. The message continued, "Bar 99, tonight at 9." After seventeen long years, we finally had a lead. Her mother had taken Tori at the age of five, and her father had been searching for her ever since. This could be the breakthrough we needed after two years of frustration.
I was so excited that I headed to the bathroom to shower and prepare for a night out at the bar. I remember Tori from her childhood, and I used to babysit her while the Alpha and Luna were busy with other things. But for me, it was more like playtime with a friend. We would have water-gun fights and play hide-and-seek in the garden. I even taught her how to use a water gun and track animals in the forest. She would watch me train and try to mimic my movements, even though she was only five years old. Despite her youth, she was both beautiful and intelligent. Hopefully, if all goes well tonight, we can confirm her identity and report the good news to the Alpha.
After showering and drying my body and hair, I threw the towel back in the bathroom and walked to my luggage to find appropriate evening attire. I found a pair of dark gray jeans and a white button-up dress shirt. I guess that will have to do. After putting on my clothes, I judged myself in front of the mirror.
Of course, being me, I see every flaw, scar, and mark on me, wondering if she will even remember me. My deep brown hair lies just past my shoulders in slight waves. My ocean-blue eyes stare back at me with sadness and longing. Then, my thoughts turn towards the ugly side of my mind. If she does remember me, will she be happy to see me? Will she hate me for not being able to keep her from leaving? My wolf and I have always held a special place in our hearts for her, as she is a close friend I love dearly. I pray the Goddess accepts me and does not run away again.
I hope that... I am good enough to be back in her life.
I reach across the table, grab my black leather coat from the back of the chair, and take one last look in the mirror as I zip it up and straighten the collar. I shot a sad smile before turning to the door and leaving the room.
I arrived at the bar just before nine and found a parking spot in the back. I watched patrons walk in and out, and a few stumbled out. I kept an eye out for Eric. He said he would be there with his fiancée, Tammy, and her friend, Tori.
I am getting slightly anxious. I hope they have not decided not to come or go elsewhere. I waited another ten minutes, then gave up and got out of my truck. I hit the lock button and headed towards the bar.
Suddenly, I hear a girl's voice yelling at someone. I stopped and listened to where it came from. Behind me, a couple is arguing over something in the back lot. I turn and slowly walk in that direction, along the parked cars, to stay out of sight. Once I reach the corner, I see a beautiful young lady screaming at a man with a blond lady standing behind him. He is pleading with her to listen, but she seems too angry. He has done something wrong. I feel uncomfortable eavesdropping on a stranger's fight, about to turn and leave when I hear the man call her name.
"Tori!" Immediately, I turned around just in time to see her pound the hood of his truck and kick the fenders. I smiled a little at myself at that. Good for her. As she stepped away, I saw her shaking her hand from the pain and found myself letting out an angry growl in my chest. I see him exit the truck, followed by a scantily dressed blonde female. He was hooking his belt as he did, which angered me even more. I was beginning to understand the cause of the fight. What an asshole! I wanted to tear him apart for hurting her!
"What the hell is wrong with you!?" He screamed at her as he approached her.
"With me? You disappeared for weeks without a phone call or a text, not a single word!" She yelled back in a raspy voice. Her breathing was heavy and difficult. "...and here I find you with...this!" She looked disgusted at the blonde, who tossed her hair over her shoulder and smirked.
"Oh, he's been...quite busy." The blonde interjected as she pulled her dress down.
Tori, please... let me explain... Tori wanted nothing to do with his excuses. She shook her head at him and walked away. Then I saw him run up to her and grab her arm. What she did next surprised me but filled me with pride. She spun around and, without missing a beat, hauled off and slugged him right across the jaw. It was a beautiful hit. He grabbed his jaw and glared right at her. Without wavering, she challenged his glare and did something I did not think he was expecting. Honestly, neither was I.
She flashed gorgeous amber fire eyes at him, and as quickly as she did, they were gone. She turned on her heel and walked back to the bar.
I surmised that there was some relationship between the guy and Tori, and he f*cked up. By the looks of it, big time! Seeing a blonde girl get out of the truck with him, I am guessing he didn't tell her he had a woman already, or that he had cheated on Tori with her. Either way, the guy was a scumbag who hurt Tori.
'Let me tear him apart!' My wolf, Ivan, demanded.
'No. Not now, anyway. We cannot alert the humans to our presence.'
'He deserves pain! He hurt our Tori!' I thought about what he said. "Our Tori" sounded nice, comfortable, and correct. It gave me a warm, tingly feeling inside my heart.
I find a pair of wolves as bouncers when I reach the door. It does not surprise me; they make exceptionally good muscle men. I stare at them and see a slight bow of their heads as their wolves recognize mine as a ranking wolf. I nodded in return and walked inside.
I slowly walked towards the large wooden bar at the back of the building, taking in the scene around me. The place was packed. Many were dancing and grinding on the dance floor, mingling through the crowd, expertly balancing their drinks without spilling on fellow dancers. I spotted an empty place at the bar and sat down. The bartender eyed me and nodded.
"What'll it be?" He asked while throwing a white bar towel over his shoulder.
"Beer. Draft"
"Leaded or unleaded?" He asked with his brow raised. That was this bar's code for human beer or wolves' beer. A regular beer does not affect a wolf. A slight buzz occurs if they drink enough; otherwise, it has no effect. A "leaded" beer was for wolves only. It had a shot or two of wolfsbane in it to enhance the effects of the alcohol. It gets us drunk faster.
"Unleaded." He stared for a moment, then went off to get the order. I spun around and watched the humans dancing, or what looked like dancing, to the base thumping music coming from the DJ booth on the other side. Many couples were grinding against each other, apparently wanting to do more than dance with their partners.
I grabbed my beer and was searching for Eric when the DJ announced karaoke. I was intrigued when I heard a seductive reggae beat and spun around to see a beautiful woman onstage. It was Tori, the woman I had seen in the parking lot. I froze, captivated by her stunning voice and how she swayed to the music. Her hips moved smoothly, and her hair whipped in rhythm, teasing the crowd. I wanted to rush up and pull her away from all the eyes watching, but I was frozen. As the song ended, she smiled and waved, a blush creeping onto her cheeks.
I heard the DJ announce Tori's name, but I was not ready to talk to her yet. I needed to calm down and think of how to introduce myself. As I turned to find Tori, I noticed the man and the blonde from earlier walking towards her. I followed them and grabbed the man's arm before he could reach Tori. I glared into his eyes, hoping he would back down. I just wanted him to stay away from her. "Stay away from the young lady before you regret it," I said low and menacingly.
"What are you gonna do, huh?!" This guy was either drunk or stupid. I was at least four or five inches taller and twice his size. I could break him with one punch. I stood blocking his path with my hands balled at my sides, attempting to control my anger when I heard it. "Victor," in a slightly breathy tone. I spun my head around and caught her eyes with my own. We stared at each other briefly before I noticed her looking up and down my body. When her eyes returned to mine, I saw a slight blush on her cheeks, and she turned away. I grinned before returning to the guy before me and grabbing his arm.
"Let's go find out!" I pushed him towards the door and out into the parking lot.
Once outside, he threw every swear word he could at me. I just stood there, growling lowly at him, deciding if I should throw him in the lake nearby or punch him in the face and knock him out. Either would make me happy.
"What do you want with the young lady?" I said through gritted teeth.
"None of your business, man, back off!"
"It is my business! Now take your sorry ass out of here before you regret it!"
"Tori!" He yelled as he jumped around me and ran up to her. He grabbed her by the arms and got in her face.
"Did you send him after me, huh? Trying to get rid of me by scaring me?!" He screamed at her as he shook her violently. "You're such a bitch! I never did anything to you!" Before I could grab him away from her, his hand came down across her face, and the distinct sound of slapping skin echoed through the lot. She fell back on the ground, hitting her head on the pavement. He lifted his leg and began kicking her in the legs. I was behind him in a flash. I grabbed him by the neck and dragged him away. I threw him to the ground and started punching him in the face. He tried blocking with one arm and swinging punches with his other. He landed a few on my chest and head, but they were like gentle slaps. I was so enraged that it did not register any pain. I picked him up and put him on his feet right in front of me. I was drawing back to punch him again when I caught Tori stumbling over and placing her hand on my arm, which was pulled back to hit.
"I'm done with you, Jonas. I never want to see you again. Stay. Away. From. Me." She enunciated each word to make her point through gritted teeth. He drew in a ragged breath and spat out a mouthful of blood.
"Yeah? Or else what?" He stared right at her. That is when we both saw it. Her eyes flashed with amber fire, then returned to normal in seconds. Controlling her rage, she calmed it down and blinked a few times. He had a shocked expression while panting to catch his breath.
"You wanna find out?" She let go of my arm, and I dropped the guy. He rubbed his jaw, glared back and forth between us, and turned to leave. He got into his truck with his woman and kicked up dust before screeching out of the parking lot. I glanced at Tori and saw her talking with her friend, her arm wrapped around her.
I looked at Eric and nodded my head, giving a slight command to watch her. Eric nodded back and led the ladies to his truck.
I slipped away quietly before Tori could ask questions; I wasn't ready to answer. As I drove back to my hotel, I gripped the steering wheel and took calming breaths, realizing I was about to follow that guy and do something I'd regret. I needed to compose myself before reporting back to the Alpha, hoping he'd be pleased we found her and would keep an eye on her.
Upon reaching my hotel, I shut off the engine and took a deep breath before heading to my room. Images of Tori's captivating dance filled my mind-I couldn't believe how beautiful she had become. I sensed a spark of recognition in her eyes, but I wondered if she truly remembered me. My wolf whined at the thought of her not knowing us.
"It's all right, man. She will come around," Ivan whined, and his words slipped into the back of my mind. I understood how he felt. I was hoping she would recognize us, but soon enough.
I swiped the key to my room and entered. Again, throwing my card on the bed, I slumped down and rubbed my face with my hands. I heard my phone ding and quickly picked it up to read the incoming message.
'Taking Tori home,' Good, I thought.
'Text me her address.' A moment later, I received the text with her address. I punched it into my contacts and brought it up on my map. It was only about 15 minutes from here, on the outskirts of town.
I studied the map of her home, which was a bit secluded at the end of a cul-de-sac with only two neighbors. Woods surrounded the backs of the houses, leading to the small town's main street. Just outside was Hidden Falls Medical Center, the only major hospital in the area, run by the local Hidden Falls Pack, a wealthy group with about eight hundred members. Their Alpha, Damon, and Luna, Daria, were well-respected, and their son, Ronin, was still without a mate. The Beta, Raymond, lost his mate during a hunter's attack, and his son, Jax, is next in line for the position. The pack mostly stays out of trouble and has a good reputation for treating its members well.
I slipped off my jacket, threw it on the chair, and headed into the bathroom. Removing my shirt, I stared at the scars and marks in the mirror. Again, I could not help but judge myself negatively for the story marred on my skin. I remember every scar on my torso and where it came from. Not one of them is worth reliving or even mentioning. They all ended painfully and traumatically. Being a Beta and a warrior comes with the territory. Being mateless and alone, I bear the nightmares alone.
I remove my clothing, shower, and turn the temperature to hot. Letting the water wash down my body, I reflect on my evening at the bar. In my mind, I see Tori singing up on stage. Her sweet voice, beautiful face, and perfect body strolled across the stage in front of everyone. I couldn't help the jealousy that ran through me, but I remember our eyes locking with one another and the slight hint of recognition and longing. Maybe she does remember me, or at least finds me familiar. I can feel my heart racing and my breathing hasten as I hear her voice. I place my hands on the tiled walls and think about her. My mind is racing, my heart is longing, and I can feel a painful tightening in my groin. I look down and find myself at full mast and groan to myself. Thinking about what to do, I hesitantly grab myself and begin to stroke slowly. I close my eyes, and all I see is her. Her perfect body was dancing just for me. My strokes become more robust and faster as I lose my breath. Before I knew it, I was stroking hard and fast as I felt my balls tighten and pull up toward my body. I increased my speed and felt the spark run through my lower spine as I released myself all over the tile. Streams of cum run down the wall and wash away in the shower stream. I watch as it disappears down the drain. I can't help but let a wave of sadness wash over me as I return to reality, finish washing myself, and rinse. I hear pounding on my door as I step out and dry with my towel.
"Hang on, I'm coming," I yelled out as I wrapped the towel around my waist and reached for the knob. I could sense my Gamma outside, and a wave of fear ran through me. I opened the door and found Eric standing there, Tammy hiding behind him, worry on her face.
"Gamma?" I tilt my head at him, and he gives me a look of frustrated fear before slightly bowing.
"Beta. We have a problem...."
