Chapter 3

The grandfather clock in the hallway chimed midnight.

I sat on the living room floor, surrounded by a mountain of financial documents. Seven years of tax returns, bank statements, and loan agreements formed a paper cage around me.

My name stared back at me from the bottom line of a five-million-dollar promissory note. The digital signature looked perfect. It was a flawless forgery.

Headlights swept across the front window. Tires crunched on the gravel driveway.

Rainer was home.

I shoved the folders into my leather briefcase and snapped the brass locks shut. I kicked the case under the sofa just as the front door swung open.

"Marnie?" Rainer called out. His keys jingled as he tossed them into the ceramic bowl.

"In the living room," I answered. My voice held steady.

He walked in, loosening his silk tie. He smelled of expensive cologne and, very faintly, of Vera’s vanilla perfume. My stomach gave a sharp, violent twist. I forced my muscles to relax.

"You're up late," he noted, dropping his briefcase on the armchair.

"I couldn't sleep. The house felt too quiet without you."

"I missed you too."

"How did the Tokyo meeting go?"

"Brutal," he sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "They demanded a complete overhaul of the Q3 projections. I had to walk them through the numbers three times before they finally agreed to the terms."

"But you closed it?"

"I always close, Marnie. You know that."

"I do."

"I’m sorry I missed dinner. I know we had reservations at Dorsia."

"It’s fine. You’re building our future. That's more important than one dinner." I smiled. The muscles in my cheeks ached from the effort.

"I am." He stepped closer and reached into his jacket pocket. "And I know I've been neglecting you lately. I wanted to make it right."

He pulled out a slim, black velvet box and offered it to me.

I took it. The hinge snapped open. A diamond pendant rested on the white satin, catching the dim light of the floor lamp. The stones were massive, easily ten carats.

"Rainer," I whispered, keeping my tone light. "This is incredible."

"Only the best for my wife," he said.

I recognized the hallmark on the clasp. Winston’s on Fifth Avenue. A piece like this cost at least a hundred thousand dollars. He bought it today. He bought it with the money he stole from my family’s estate.

"Put it on me," I told him, turning my back to him.

"Hold your hair up."

I gathered my hair away from my neck. He lifted the cold metal from the box. The chain draped against my collarbone. His warm fingers brushed my skin.

A wave of pure disgust washed through me. My jaw clamped shut. I dug my fingernails into my palms to stop myself from pulling away.

"You're tense," he observed, his thumbs pressing into my shoulders.

"My neck is just stiff. I spent hours staring at a screen today."

"What were you working on?"

"Just organizing some old files."

"Don't stress over paperwork. Hire an assistant if you need to. We have the money."

"I will."

"Fits perfectly," he murmured, securing the clasp. He leaned down and pressed a kiss to my shoulder. "Do you like it?"

"I love it," I lied, turning around to face him. "Thank you."

"Good." He took a step back, unbuttoning his cuffs. "Listen, since the merger is moving forward, I have to take a quick trip next week."

"Next week?" I asked, tilting my head. "Where to?"

"Tokyo. The board wants me to sign the final papers at their headquarters."

Malaysia. He was flying to Kuala Lumpur, not Tokyo.

"How long will you be gone?" I asked.

"Just a few days. I fly out Saturday morning. I'll be back by Wednesday." He offered a tired, reassuring smile. "Once this deal closes, we’ll have more money than we know what to do with. We can finally take that vacation to Paris."

"I’d like that."

"I'm going to take a shower," he said, turning toward the stairs. "Don't stay up too late."

"I'll be right up."

I watched him climb the staircase. The moment he disappeared from view, I reached up and unclasped the necklace. I dropped the diamonds onto the coffee table like they were radioactive.

*Friday morning.*

Sunlight flooded the kitchen. Rainer had left for the office an hour ago, whistling a tune on his way out the door.

I sat at the granite island, my laptop open, my phone pressed to my ear.

"First National Bank, corporate lending division. This is Greg speaking."

"Greg, this is Marnie Caldwell. Account ending in four-four-nine-two."

Keys clacked on his end. "Good morning, Mrs. Caldwell. How can I help you today?"

"I need to place an immediate freeze on the five-million-dollar line of credit approved yesterday. Halt all pending disbursements."

Silence stretched over the line.

"Let me pull up your file," Greg said. More typing echoed through the speaker. "Ah, I see it here. Mrs. Caldwell, your husband submitted the final authorization for that transfer yesterday afternoon. The funds are scheduled to clear into the Caldwell Enterprises operating account tomorrow morning at nine."

"Cancel the transfer."

"I can't do that without a joint signature. Mr. Caldwell is listed as an authorized user on the corporate side."

"I am the primary guarantor. The loan is secured against my family estate. I did not authorize the final release."

"We have a digital signature on file matching yours, ma'am."

"It was forged." My voice dropped to a hard, flat pitch. "If you release a single cent of that money, I will have my lawyers file a fraud injunction against this bank by noon. I will also hold you personally liable for facilitating the theft of five million dollars."

"Mrs. Caldwell, those are serious allegations."

"Freeze the account, Greg. Now."

Another pause. The clicking on his keyboard grew frantic.

"Okay. Okay. I am placing a hard hold on the funds. The transfer is canceled."

"Will Rainer be notified?"

"Standard procedure dictates an automated email goes out within twenty-four hours regarding failed transfers."

"Make sure it takes exactly twenty-four hours. Thank you, Greg."

I ended the call and set the phone down.

The escape funds were gone. Rainer’s ticket to Malaysia just became useless paper.

I opened my laptop and inserted a blank flash drive. I had twenty-four hours before he realized his offshore account was empty. I needed every piece of leverage I could find.

I logged into the home network router. Rainer always thought he was the tech genius in our house, but he left his administrative passwords taped to the bottom of his desk drawer.

I bypassed his firewall and accessed his personal desktop in the study.

Folders populated on my screen. I skipped the standard financial documents and dug into the hidden directories.

*Click.*

A folder labeled 'Project K' opened.

Hundreds of files stared back at me. Photographs. Bank statements. Emails.

I clicked the first image. It was a scanned copy of Vera’s passport.

I opened the second. A deed to a luxury villa in Kuala Lumpur, fully paid for, listed under Vera’s maiden name.

"You arrogant bastard," I whispered to the empty room.

He wasn't just stealing my money. He was using it to buy a new life for his mistress.

I highlighted the entire folder and dragged it to my flash drive. The progress bar crawled across the screen.

My phone buzzed on the counter.

A text message from Julian lit up the lock screen.

*Julian: Did you cut the cord?*

*Marnie: The bank froze the transfer. He has nothing.*

*Julian: Good. Now we set the trap. Meet me at the gallery at 2 PM. Bring the flash drive. He’s going to panic soon.*

I stared at the downloading files. The progress bar hit ninety-nine percent.

A heavy knock hammered against the front door.

I jumped, slamming my laptop shut.

The knocking came again, louder this time, rattling the wooden frame.

I walked into the foyer and peered through the peephole.

Two men in dark suits stood on my porch. One of them held a thick manila envelope bearing the seal of the State Bureau of Investigation.

My pulse spiked. I reached for the deadbolt.
