Chapter 1

Clara Hayes and I have been best friends for 22 years, so when I found myself catching her husband Damon Reed shopping with another woman while she was at home, pregnant, I was completely panicked.

It was a lazy afternoon, and I decided to hit the mall for some new clothes. But to my surprise, as soon as I turned a corner, I saw Damon and a woman laughing together as they entered a jewelry store.

I blinked several times, making sure I wasn’t imagining it. There was no mistaking it—Damon was definitely the man I recognized, Clara’s boyfriend.

The woman with him, though, was a stranger to me. Through the glass of the store’s entrance, I saw them chatting with the sales associate. Then Damon picked out a gold necklace, grinning as he draped it around the woman’s neck.

They stood close to each other the entire time, looking every bit like a couple in love. Anyone who didn’t know them would’ve assumed they were a young couple deep in the throes of romance.

But if that was the case, what did it mean for Clara?

I clutched my phone, anxiety flooding my chest. Should I tell Clara what I’d seen? The uncertainty was overwhelming.

She was incredibly in love with Damon. From the moment I first met him, I’d had a bad feeling. They just didn’t seem right together.

I had just come out of a five-year relationship, and no one knew better than me how a man truly behaves when he’s in love with a woman—versus when he’s just playing around.

Damon was attractive, sure, but he was also known as a player in our town. Honestly, I had no idea how he even managed to win Clara over.

They’d been together for less than six months when Clara got pregnant. Now, months later, there had been no mention of an engagement. In fact, neither of their parents had even met yet.

I’d gently urged Clara several times to have a serious talk with Damon. Getting pregnant before marriage isn’t ideal, and if he wasn’t going to step up, she’d be the one left holding the bag.

But every time she tried to talk to him, he’d just brush it off with some excuse, like, “I’ll save up for the dowry first.”

It was frustrating, but Clara was my best friend, so I kept my mouth shut and didn’t push too hard.

Now, witnessing this, I didn’t hesitate. I pulled out my phone and sent her a message immediately.

“Are you free right now? Come to the jewelry store on Cedar Walk Street. Damon’s here with some woman.”

Clara replied almost instantly: “What?”

“I’m not joking. Get over here quick, they’re about to leave.”

I was in a panic.

But I couldn’t just walk up to Damon and ask him what the hell was going on with this woman.

I knew better than to interfere. It wasn’t my place to get involved in their relationship, but I just wanted Clara to see Damon for who he really was and get out of this before things went further.

Clara arrived quickly, and I waited anxiously outside.

As soon as she stepped out of the cab, she was fuming. “Where’s Damon? I’ll show him just how bold this woman is for trying to steal him away!”

“They were just inside the store,” I said, confused. “How could they be gone already?”

I looked around, perplexed. I’d stayed outside the store, careful not to draw attention, but when I turned back to wait for Clara, they’d vanished.

“I already sent you the video I took. There’s definitely something fishy going on between them. Damon was smiling like he won the lottery and even picked out a gold necklace for her.”

The more I spoke, the angrier I got. Damon and Clara had been together for months, yet every time a special occasion came up, he found an excuse to avoid celebrating. Clara hadn’t even gotten flowers from him.

And he was always complaining about being broke, asking Clara to cover his cigarette money.

But now? He was secretly acting like a big spender, giving some other woman a gold necklace.

Chapter 2

Clara gritted her teeth in anger. "Damon, that shameless bastard! He eats my food, drinks my drinks, and still dares to sneak around behind my back with other women. This is not going to end like this. I’m calling him right now, and I’m going to get to the bottom of this!"

As she was about to dial Damon’s number, I quickly stopped her.

"Calm down. You’re pregnant, so take a moment to settle your emotions first. You need to test the waters with him and see what’s really going on. As long as he’s seeing other women, you’ll catch him. With someone like Damon, if you don’t have concrete proof, he’ll never admit to anything. Don’t make any moves that might tip him off."

Clara’s face turned red with fury as she panted, slapping her chest.

"Is there a man in the world who doesn't act like this? Why do they always have to go outside? Is the trash out there really better than what's at home?"

Her words left me in silence, as it hit a little too close to home. My ex had dumped me for a woman who worked as a hostess.

Five years of love meant nothing compared to their 24 hours together.

"Just listen to me for now. Go home and check his phone to see if there’s anything you shouldn’t find. Stay calm and wait for the right moment—better to catch him red-handed."

At that moment, I couldn’t help but glance at Clara, worry creeping in.

"If Damon really did something to betray you, would you still forgive him?"

Clara looked at me, confused, and replied without hesitation, "Do I look like the kind of person who would forgive him? If he did something like that before we were even married, what’s he going to do after? If I catch him, I’m done with him."

Hearing that, a weight lifted off my chest.

The natural reaction when discovering your boyfriend has cheated is usually to break up. Very few people would even consider forgiveness.

Because men are like dogs, and you can’t change their nature. No matter how many times you yell or punish them, they still go back to their bad habits.

But still, I couldn’t shake off my worries about Clara.

Having a "love brain" is a sickness. And Clara wasn’t just love-stricken—she was aware of what was happening, yet still falling deeper, giving everything without holding back. It was the kind of situation that no amount of reasoning could fix.

But hearing Clara’s words, I didn’t press her further. I just reassured her a little and told her to go home.

Later that night, as I was drifting in and out of sleep, my phone started buzzing with a flurry of messages.

I squinted at the screen and saw that all the messages were from Clara.

They were long voice notes, but before I could listen, a strange number called.

I answered, and immediately, an angry voice came through the line.

"Elena Vance, are you out of your mind? Just because your own relationship is falling apart, you want to drag everyone else down with you? What the hell are you talking about? Where the hell did you see me cheating? Tell me, which eye of yours saw that?"

Chapter 3

It was no surprise who was calling — Damon.

His harsh words snapped me out of my daze, instantly bringing clarity to my thoughts. Without hesitation, I fired back.

“What do you mean, I’d be thrilled if you two broke up? Clara is my best friend. I saw everything that happened between you and that woman at the jewelry store. If there had been fewer people around, I’m sure you would’ve pulled her in for a kiss. You’ve been with Clara for so long—what have you ever bought her? Now you’re handing gifts to another woman. At the very least, a gold necklace, right? Are you even human?”

Damon's voice rose, louder and angrier. “What the hell are you blabbering about? Come on, let’s meet face-to-face. Give me your address, I’ll come over, and we’ll sort this out. I can’t stand people making up lies and throwing dirt on my name. I was just buying a necklace for my sister, and now you’re turning it into an affair, huh?”

His words left me momentarily stunned.

Sister?

I had never heard Clara mention that Damon had a sister.

Even if he did, there was no way they were that close. The two of them had been practically glued to each other earlier; I swear, Damon’s eyes were practically glowing.

“You’re out here spreading rumors about me, knowing full well Clara’s pregnant and can’t handle any stress. And yet, you’re still talking shit. Are you trying to hurt her on purpose? Let me tell you, I’ve seen plenty of women who hide behind the ‘best friend’ act while plotting harm. If you keep stirring up trouble in our relationship, don’t expect me to be polite anymore!”

He ranted, then hung up abruptly.

I sat there, still processing his words, unable to respond.

I didn’t have any direct contact with Damon—my number was clearly passed on to him by Clara.

But as for everything he just said, not a word of it felt true.

There was definitely something shady going on between Damon and that woman.

What hurt even more, though, was that the entire four-minute conversation happened with Clara sitting right next to me, saying nothing—just silently listening to Damon curse me out.

My phone buzzed with a new message from Clara.

I opened it, and it was a voice message.

“Elena, when Damon came back today, we got into a huge argument. I ended up telling him everything that happened at the store. He said he was just there to help his sister pick out a necklace, that’s all—he was just choosing a style, then left. Nothing else happened. I still trust him.”

The last sentence nearly made my blood boil.

I sat on the bed and started typing a reply.

“What sister? Which sister are you talking about? Did you make sure to ask? Is there even a blood relation? I’ve never heard you mention that he has any siblings before.”

“He said it’s his sister from back home. She came into town to visit him, so he helped her pick out a gold necklace and then sent her back. The money for the necklace came from her, not him.”

I hesitated for a moment.

Could it be that I had been wrong in my suspicions?
