Chapter 1

My fiancé charged a $4.2 million penthouse to my credit card—in the building I own—for his mistress.

"It's our wedding gift, Sera," Julian laughed, his hand lingering on Chloe's hip as they toasted with my vintage champagne.

The marble floors they planned to tear out were mine, and the future they were stealing was built entirely on my bank account.

He thinks he's a genius playing a weak woman, but he has no idea that one click from my laptop will erase his entire life.

****

The phone screen lit the dark bedroom like a struck match. $4,200,000.00 USD. Merchant: Côte d'Azur Estates. I read the number twice before the whiskey in my hand even registered as cold.

I sat on the edge of the mattress, a heavy crystal tumbler in my left hand. I lifted the glass. The whiskey burned a harsh, fiery path down my throat. Good. I needed the sting. It kept my mind sharp.

I tapped the speed dial for my wealth manager.

"Elias," I said the second the line connected.

"Seraphina. I was just about to text you. The fraud alert just hit my terminal."

"It is not a stranger."

"Julian?"

"Julian." I kept my eyes fixed on the shadows in the corner of the room. "Cancel the transaction immediately."

"Impossible. He used your VIP bypass code. The funds bypassed the standard holding period."

"He used my personal code to buy a penthouse in my own building."

"Technically, Vanguard Real Estate owns the building, and you own Vanguard. But yes. He bought the Unit A Penthouse. The crown jewel of the project."

"Reverse it, Elias."

"The escrow is fully digital. Once the biometric clears, the money sits in Vanguard's corporate accounts. You will have to void the contract from the seller's side. If I try to pull it back from the bank's end, it triggers a federal audit."

"How did he get the bypass code?"

"It requires dual authentication. He used the supplementary card and the master PIN you set up for the joint wedding accounts."

"He drained the wedding reserve for this?"

"Every cent. Plus a three-million-dollar overdraft on your primary line of credit."

"Watch me handle this." I ended the call.

I dialed Julian's number. He answered on the second ring. Laughter echoed through the speaker. A woman's laugh. High, grating, and entirely too familiar.

"Sera! You are up!" Julian's voice spilled over with fake, exaggerated cheer.

"Four point two million dollars, Julian."

"I knew you would get the alert. Surprise!"

"Explain the surprise. Quickly."

"It is our wedding gift. The Côte d'Azur penthouse. The one with the wraparound balcony you showed me last month. We are moving in before the ceremony."

"You bought a property from my company, using my money, to gift to me."

"It is marital assets, Sera. We are signing the papers in three weeks anyway. I just wanted everything ready. The broker opened the office late just for us."

"Us." I repeated the word, tasting the foulness of it. "Who is laughing in the background?"

"Oh, Chloe is here."

"Your ex-girlfriend is helping you buy my wedding gift."

"She is an interior designer, Sera! Stop being so paranoid. She helped me pick the imported marble for the master bath. You have been so busy with the merger, I wanted to take this off your plate."

"Sera, you make eight figures a year," Julian continued, his tone shifting to something defensive. "Four million is nothing to you. Why are you acting like I stole from you?"

"Because you did. You used the wedding reserve."

"It is an investment! Real estate always appreciates. Plus, Chloe negotiated a five percent discount with your broker."

"She negotiated a discount on my property, with my broker, using my money."

"See? You are doing that thing again. You are making it about control."

"Put her on."

"What? No, we are celebrating."

"Put Chloe on the phone, Julian. Now."

Rustling. A muffled whisper. Then, a sweet, cloying voice.

"Hi, Seraphina! Oh my god, the view up here is stunning. You are going to love the soaking tub I picked out for you guys."

"Hand the phone back to Julian."

"I just wanted to say congratulations. Julian was so stressed about finding the perfect place, and I told him, why not buy the best unit in your own building? It keeps the money in the family, right?"

"Hand it back."

More rustling. Julian cleared his throat. "There. Are you happy? You always have to make things so tense."

"Are the physical contracts signed?"

"Just finished. We are waiting on your site manager to print the final deed."

"Enjoy the view, Julian."

"We are. I will see you at home."

"Do not bother." I ended the call.

I set the whiskey glass down on the nightstand. The ice settled with a sharp clink. I tossed the duvet aside. The hardwood floor felt like ice against my bare feet. I crossed the room in quick strides and reached the mahogany desk, flipping open my encrypted laptop.

The screen flared to life, illuminating the dark corners of the room. I tapped my earpiece, dialing the site manager.

"Marcus. Report."

"Ms. Hale. I am sorry to bother you so late, but Mr. Voss insisted on the VIP walkthrough."

"I know. I am looking at the charge."

"I have the final deed queued up. He is asking for the keys."

"Do not print that deed."

"Ms. Hale?"

"You heard me. Halt the printing."

"He is standing right outside the glass. He has a bottle of our vintage Dom Pérignon open. He and Chloe are toasting to the new master bedroom."

"Let him drink it. It is the last thing he will get from me."

"Ms. Hale, he is currently measuring the living room floor with Chloe. They are talking about tearing out the Italian hardwood we just installed last week."

"Tearing it out?"

"Chloe says it clashes with her vision for your feng shui."

"My feng shui."

"Yes, ma'am. Should I call security?"

"Not yet. Let them finish their champagne."

"If I stop the deed process now, the system will flag the transaction as incomplete. It triggers the security protocol."

"I built the protocol, Marcus. I know what it does."

"It will freeze the entire Côte d'Azur project. All sales, all transfers, all escrows. The board will be notified instantly."

"Let the board panic. I will handle them tomorrow."

"Julian is going to throw a fit. He is already telling the sales staff he is taking over the penthouse renovations tomorrow morning."

"Julian is about to learn what happens when you play with my money. I am logging into the executive intranet now."

"Awaiting your command, boss."

I typed in my master password. The Vanguard Real Estate portal loaded.

My spine snapped perfectly straight. The leather office chair groaned under the sudden shift in weight. I grabbed the wireless mouse and squeezed the plastic shell hard enough to make the joints pop.

The screen displayed the Côte d'Azur master ledger. Right at the top: Unit A Penthouse. Status: Pending Final Generation.

I moved the cursor to the top right corner.

A solid red button dominated the screen.

"One-Click Freeze Project."

My index finger hovered over the mouse. Three millimeters. That was all the distance left between Julian's smug celebration and total, catastrophic ruin.

He had no idea whose name sat on the building's holding certificate. He had never once thought to ask.

I pressed down.

Chapter 2

The oversized Tom Ford sunglasses shielded my eyes from the glaring halogen lights. I sat perfectly still behind the massive acrylic scale model of the Côte d'Azur tower.

Fifty meters away, the glass walls of the VIP suite offered an unobstructed view.

I raised my phone. The camera lens zoomed in on the leather sofa inside the room.

Julian sat right in the center. His arm rested firmly around Chloe's waist.

"Mr. Voss, the system is showing a slight delay on the deed generation," Marcus's voice crackled through the wireless earpiece tucked into my right ear. He had left his lapel microphone open, just as I instructed.

"Refresh it, Marcus," Julian demanded. His tone carried that familiar, arrogant edge. "I have contractors meeting us here in an hour."

"I am trying, sir. The server seems unresponsive."

Chloe leaned her head against Julian's shoulder. "Don't stress him out, baby. Julian works so hard, Marcus. Give the system a minute."

"I just want the paperwork finalized," Julian muttered. "I already wired the four million."

"Actually, my fiancé wired the four million," Julian amended, a smirk playing on his lips. "But what is hers is mine. We sign the marriage certificate next week."

"She is so lucky to have a man who handles the investments," Chloe cooed.

I adjusted the angle of my phone. The screen captured Julian's thumb stroking the curve of Chloe's hip.

"Sera is too busy playing CEO to understand real estate," Julian said. "She thinks leaving money in a mutual fund is a strategy. I am securing our future."

"Our future," Chloe repeated. She traced a circle on his chest. "Are you sure she won't check the accounts until tomorrow?"

"Sera is buried in board meetings. She never looks at the joint ledger on Thursdays."

I tapped the secondary line on my smartwatch.

"Elias," I whispered.

"I hear them," my wealth manager replied instantly. "Marcus patched the audio feed to my office."

"Are you logging this?"

"The audio file is secure. It is entirely admissible in court."

"What about his personal accounts?" I asked, keeping my eyes fixed on the glowing screen of my phone.

"Empty. He moved everything he had into a shell company last week."

"He was planning to leave me with the mortgage on this penthouse."

"And the tax burden," Elias added. "He forged your digital signature on the Vanguard liability waiver."

"That carries a federal sentence."

"He should have thought of that before buying a love nest on your dime. Do you want me to call the authorities?"

"Not yet. I want to watch him panic first."

I disconnected the call with Elias and focused back on the VIP room.

Donovan, my top Sales Director, entered the glass suite carrying a leather folio. He laid the documents out on the glass coffee table.

"Everything is in order, Mr. Voss," Donovan said. "We just need your physical signature on the transfer agreement while the digital deed generates."

"Finally," Julian sighed. He grabbed the gold-plated pen.

"Tell the contractors to rip out the kitchen island tomorrow," Julian told Chloe as he signed the first page.

"But it is imported quartz," Chloe protested lightly.

"I don't care. It is too cold. I want warmer tones. Sera's taste is entirely too sterile."

"She is a bit rigid, isn't she?" Chloe giggled.

"She is a machine. All she cares about is the Vanguard stock price."

"Well, we should thank her. She is funding our dream."

Julian flipped to the last page. He scrawled his name across the bottom line.

"Done," Julian declared. He handed the contract back to Donovan. "The penthouse is ours."

Chloe tilted her head up. Julian leaned down.

Their lips locked.

A violent, cramping pull yanked at my core. I clamped my teeth down on my lower lip until the fragile skin gave way under the pressure.

A sharp metallic tang flooded my tongue. Blood.

I swallowed the bitter taste and kept the camera steady. The recording captured every second of their embrace.

"Perfect," Julian murmured against Chloe's mouth. "Our new home."

"I can already picture the nursery," Chloe whispered, her hands tangling in his collar.

The word echoed in my earpiece. Nursery.

My fingers gripped the edges of the phone case. The plastic dug into my palms.

"Where is that deed, Donovan?" Julian asked, pulling back from Chloe. "I want the physical keys."

Donovan frowned at his tablet. He tapped the screen twice.

"Mr. Voss, I am getting an override error. Code 99."

"What does that mean?" Julian snapped.

"It means the funds are frozen."

"Frozen? I wired four million dollars an hour ago!"

"The escrow account is locked," Donovan explained, his voice tight with sudden stress. "The entire Côte d'Azur grid just went offline."

"Fix it!" Julian shouted. He stood up, towering over the coffee table. "Call the IT department. Call the bank. Do whatever you have to do."

"I cannot fix this, sir."

"Why not?"

"Code 99 is a direct executive override."

Julian crossed his arms. "So? Call the executive."

"The only person who can issue a Code 99 is the CEO of Vanguard Real Estate."

Chloe shifted on the sofa. "Julian, what is he talking about?"

"Nothing. It is a glitch," Julian insisted. He glared at Donovan. "Sera is at home sleeping. She doesn't even know I am here."

"I assure you, Mr. Voss, this is not a glitch."

"Then bypass it!"

"Any attempt to bypass a Code 99 triggers an automatic lockdown of the building's security systems."

"I am the CEO's fiancé! Give me the keys to my penthouse!"

"It is not your penthouse," a new voice interrupted.

Marcus stepped into the room, holding his own tablet. "The transaction has been voided."

"Excuse me?" Julian stepped toward Marcus. "Who authorized a void?"

"The true owner of the funds," Marcus replied calmly.

"I am the owner of those funds!" Julian roared.

"No, sir. You are an authorized user on a supplementary card. A card that was just reported stolen."

Chloe gasped. She grabbed Julian's arm. "Stolen? Julian, what did you do?"

"Shut up, Chloe. I didn't steal anything." Julian pulled his phone from his pocket. "I will call Sera right now. She will clear this up."

He dialed my number.

My phone vibrated silently in my hand. I watched the screen flash with his incoming call.

I hit decline.

Julian stared at his phone in disbelief. "She sent me to voicemail."

"Perhaps she is busy," Marcus suggested.

"Call her again," Chloe urged, her voice trembling. "If the police think we stole four million dollars—"

"We didn't steal it!" Julian dialed again.

I declined it again.

"Damn it, Sera," Julian hissed. He shoved the phone back into his pocket. "Donovan, give me the contract I just signed. I am taking it to my lawyers."

"I cannot do that, sir," Donovan said. He slid the leather folio off the table and held it against his chest.

"It has my signature on it!"

"It is Vanguard property now."

Julian lunged forward. "Give me the damn paper!"

Donovan stepped back quickly. He exited the glass enclosure, putting distance between himself and Julian's sudden rage.

"Security is on their way up, Mr. Voss," Marcus warned.

"I am not leaving without that contract!" Julian yelled.

Donovan ignored him. He looked up from the tablet in his hands.

His gaze swept the massive sales floor. He looked past the reception desk. He scanned past the towering marble pillars.

He turned his head toward the acrylic scale model.

His eyes locked directly onto mine.

Chapter 3

The elevator doors parted. I stepped onto the top floor of Vanguard Headquarters.

My shoes sank silently into the thick carpet of the executive corridor. The silence up here offered a stark contrast to the chaotic sales floor I had just left behind.

Arthur Pendelton stood waiting outside the frosted glass of the main boardroom. As Vanguard's acting CEO, he rarely stayed at the office past eight. Tonight, his tie hung loose around his neck.

"You actually pulled the trigger," Arthur said, falling into step beside me.

"I told you I would."

"A Code 99, Seraphina. You froze eighty million dollars in active escrows."

"I secured my capital." I pushed open the heavy oak door to the boardroom.

"The board is panicking," Arthur pressed, following me inside. "My phone has not stopped ringing for ten minutes. Shareholders are demanding to know why the Côte d'Azur project just went completely dark."

"Let them panic. What is the status of Unit A?"

"Julian is still down in the VIP suite. Security is holding the perimeter."

"Is he leaving?"

"No. He is currently threatening to sue Donovan. He also threatened to fire Marcus."

"He does not have the authority to fire a receptionist, let alone my site manager."

"He believes he does." Arthur walked over to the massive mahogany table. "He keeps shouting about his marital rights. He told the sales team he owns half of your shares."

"We are not married."

"He seems to think the wedding invitations grant him executive power."

I walked to the head of the table. The leather chair felt cold against my back as I sat down.

"Did you review the transaction logs?" I asked.

"I did." Arthur picked up a sleek tablet and tapped the screen. "It gets worse, Seraphina."

"Tell me."

"He attempted to route the standard broker's commission to an external LLC."

"Let me guess. Chloe's LLC."

"Yes. Reyes Interiors," Arthur confirmed, reading from the screen. "They structured the purchase to pocket a two hundred thousand dollar kickback."

"He used my money to buy a penthouse, and then tried to pay his ex-girlfriend a commission for the privilege."

"Exactly. The fraud department flagged the routing number, but his VIP code bypassed the security hold."

"Because I gave him that code."

"You trusted him."

"I made a miscalculation." I placed my hands flat on the table. "I do not tolerate miscalculations."

Arthur set the tablet down. He reached into a leather folder and extracted a single sheet of thick parchment. The top margin featured a bold, red header.

He slid the document across the polished wood.

"The executive committee drafted this five minutes ago," Arthur explained. "This is the formal project halt. A red-header directive."

"It legitimizes the system freeze."

"Yes. But without your physical signature, the automated lock releases in exactly one hour. The money will transfer to the seller's account, and the deed will generate."

"Julian gets the penthouse."

"And Chloe gets the commission," Arthur added. "I need your ink on this, Seraphina. Right now."

I stared at the paper. The black text blurred for a fraction of a second. Three years. I had spent three years building a life with Julian. I mapped out our future. I integrated his life into mine. I gave him access to the deepest vaults of my empire.

And he used it to build a nest for someone else.

I reached inside my blazer. My fingers wrapped around the cool metal of my Montblanc pen. I pulled it out and removed the cap.

I looked down at the dotted line at the bottom of the page.

My throat tightened. A dry, stubborn ache settled there, refusing to fade.

"Are you changing your mind?" Arthur asked softly.

"No."

I pressed the tip to the paper.

The steel nib scratched harshly against the page. The sound echoed in the empty boardroom, sharp and final.

I bypassed my standard signature. Instead, I wrote out my true equity code. The complex alpha-numeric sequence proved my absolute, uncontested control over Vanguard Real Estate.

I pushed the paper back across the table.

Arthur picked it up. He verified the sequence, his eyes scanning the letters.

"Done," Arthur said. "The freeze is permanent. The board cannot overturn an equity code directive."

"Good." I capped the pen. "Now, open the communications console."

Arthur frowned. "You want to address the board?"

"No. I want to address the building."

"Seraphina, it is late. Only the sales team and the security staff are still in the tower."

"Exactly. Route your microphone to the main public address system."

Arthur stared at me. "You want to broadcast this?"

"Every floor. Especially the sales center."

"Julian will hear it."

"That is the entire point."

Arthur did not argue further. He walked over to the media console built into the wall. He flipped two silver switches. A low hum vibrated through the boardroom speakers.

"The system is live," Arthur said. "I have isolated the feed to the ground floor and the VIP suite."

"Give me the exact status of the four million dollars."

"It is sitting in the Vanguard holding account. The escrow was canceled."

"Send it back."

"To the supplementary card?"

"To the exact account it originated from. Reverse the charge entirely."

"If I reverse it now, his bank will flag the massive sudden refund. It might lock his accounts for suspicious activity."

"Reverse it, Arthur."

Arthur typed a command into the console. The screen flashed green.

"Funds transferred," he confirmed. "The four million is out of our system."

"There is one more thing." I stood, smoothing the front of my blazer. "Pull his master access. Every credential. Every keycard, every biometric scan, every door in this portfolio that currently opens for Julian Voss."

Arthur's hand stilled over the console. "Every property?"

"Every property I own. As of tonight, that name does not exist in this system."

"That includes the villa."

"I know what it includes."

Arthur exhaled slowly. He tapped through three more screens, then nodded once. "Access revoked. Tower-wide."

"Press the broadcast button."

Arthur placed his finger over the glowing red key on the console panel. He looked at me one last time, seeking final confirmation.

I gave a single, sharp nod.

Arthur pressed the button. The intercom chimed, a clear, ringing note that pierced every speaker in the tower.

He leaned into the microphone.

"Mr. Voss, your purchase funds have been returned to their original source. Effective immediately, your access credentials have been revoked from every Vanguard property in this portfolio, including your current residence."

The line stayed open for one more second. Long enough for the entire sales floor to hear what came next.

Long enough for Julian to hear it too.

"You have ten minutes to vacate the building before security escorts you out."
