Erased from My Son's Wedding Chapter 1

I spent a year and all my savings planning my only son's dream wedding.

On the big day, I walked into the banquet hall to find my name at the furthest table by the kitchen.

Sitting at the head table next to my husband was Rebecca, his "close friend."

When the music started, my son Caleb walked down the aisle.

But he didn't hand the mother's corsage to me.

He pinned it onto Rebecca's dress.

"She's more photogenic, Mom," Caleb whispered when I confronted him. "Don't make my day about you."

My husband frowned. "See the big picture, Linda. Now go help Rebecca with her train."

I didn't scream or cry.

I handed Caleb the vendor payment binder.

Then I walked to the restroom, stripped off my custom gown, and threw it in the trash.

I left the venue in my sweatpants.

And I never went back to that house.

***

"Did my payment clear?" I asked the venue manager.

Megan Brooks checked the tablet in her hand, then nodded. "Twenty thousand dollars toward the contracted reception package. Paid in full. Any bar extensions or damage charges will be billed to the groom, exactly as the authorization form states."

She handed me the yellow receipt.

I folded it once and slipped it into my silver clutch. The paper weighed almost nothing, but my fingers tightened around it before I let go.

Twenty thousand dollars was only the final visible piece of what this wedding had cost me.

For the past year, I had compared caterers, negotiated hotel blocks, tasted cakes, assembled welcome bags, and learned more about imported orchids than I had ever wanted to know. I had answered calls before sunrise because Haley changed the shade of the linens. I had driven across town in freezing rain when Caleb forgot to collect his tailored tuxedo.

I had done it because he was my only son.

Long before this wedding, I had worked three jobs to keep our family afloat. I served breakfast at a diner, stocked grocery shelves in the afternoon, and answered customer-service calls from our kitchen after Caleb went to sleep. Mark attended night classes while I paid the tuition and kept the lights on.

When he passed his licensing exams and joined the accounting firm, he called it our victory.

Years later, the story changed. Mark became the man who had built everything. I became the wife who had been lucky enough to stand beside him.

Today, I was supposed to stand beside my son.

"The ballroom looks beautiful," I told Megan.

"You made every decision," she said. "The florists finished the head table ten minutes ago. You should sit down before the doors open."

The ceremony had ended across the hall. Through the closed ballroom doors, I could hear the muffled swell of three hundred guests gathering in the lobby. Glasses clinked. A string quartet moved into the first notes of the cocktail-hour set.

I looked down at my navy gown. It had been altered three times because Haley wanted the immediate family to look "clean and coordinated" in the photographs. The boning pinched my ribs, and the satin shoes had already rubbed the skin raw above my heels.

Still, I smiled.

Caleb had looked happy at the altar. That was what mattered.

A photographer hurried past me carrying two cameras. "Mrs. Dawson, we need the family at the head table in five minutes."

"Of course."

He was already moving away before I finished speaking.

I crossed the ballroom beneath crystal chandeliers and yards of ivory draping. White orchids floated above each table in low glass bowls so no guest's view would be blocked. I had insisted on that detail. A centerpiece should bring people together, not separate them.

The head table rose on a shallow platform at the center of the room.

I slowed.

There were three chairs.

Mark occupied the middle one, even though the reception had not officially begun. His tuxedo jacket hung open, and a whiskey rested in his hand. Caleb's place card sat to his right.

Rebecca's sat to his left.

She wore champagne silk, close enough to bridal white that two vendors had mistaken her for part of the wedding party. Her blonde hair fell in soft waves over one shoulder. She leaned toward my husband, laughing at something he said, while his hand rested along the back of her chair.

I searched the table again.

Caleb Dawson.

Mark Dawson.

Rebecca Cole.

No Linda Dawson.

A server approached with a tray of champagne flutes. "Excuse me," I said. "Where is the final seating chart?"

He pointed toward a framed display near the ballroom entrance. "Alphabetical by last name, ma'am."

I walked to it, telling myself there had been a printing error.

Dawson, Caleb and Haley: Head Table.

Dawson, Mark: Head Table.

Dawson, Linda: Table Eighteen.

Table Eighteen stood at the far edge of the room beside the swinging kitchen doors.

I stared at the placement long enough for the server to ask whether I felt faint.

"No," I said. "Show me the table."

He led me past the corporate guests Mark had personally added to the list. We passed my sisters, Mark's partners, college friends Caleb had not seen in years, and two tables reserved for Haley's extended family.

The temperature rose as we approached the service corridor. The doors opened every few seconds, releasing bursts of steam, the crash of pans, and shouted instructions from the catering staff.

A small round table had been wedged between a support column and a rolling tray station. One leg was shorter than the others. The linen tilted each time a waiter brushed past it.

My place card sat there alone.

Linda Dawson.

No spouse listed. No family designation. Just my name in smudged gray ink beside a stack of folded napkins.

"There should be seven seats at this table," the server said. "The other guests haven't arrived."

I checked the chart again. The names belonged to vendors' assistants and two distant cousins I had never met.

"Who approved this change?" I asked.

The server hesitated. "The groom and Mr. Dawson reviewed the layout this morning."

Not a printing error.

Not a last-minute adjustment.

My husband and my son had discussed where to put me. They had chosen the kitchen.

The doors swung open behind me. A cook rushed through carrying a tray of hot plates. The edge clipped the table, making my water glass jump.

"Sorry, ma'am," he called without stopping.

I steadied the glass. My hand did not shake.

Across the ballroom, Mark looked directly at me. He saw where I stood. He saw the place card in my hand.

Then he turned back to Rebecca.

Caleb climbed onto the platform holding a white orchid corsage. The one I had ordered for the mother of the groom.

He walked straight toward her, smiling as though the decision had already been settled without me.
