Chapter 6

Thinking about the significant amount of money needed for my mom's ongoing treatment, I decided to call a gaming company I had previously invested in.

"Hello, is this Ezrah?" I asked, trying to maintain my composure. "It's Victoria Robinson. You know, the Victoria who invested in your company a while back. Do you have a moment? I need to discuss something with you..."

Ezrah sounded pleasantly surprised on the other end. "Victoria! It's been ages. How have you been?"

After some light conversation, I got straight to the point. I needed to advance my investment dividends because I was in urgent need of funds. Ezrah didn't hesitate. "Of course, how much do you need? I'll transfer it to you right away!"

I felt a twinge of guilt for asking, knowing my investment was only a small part of the company, and that it was still in its growth phase with tight finances. Hesitantly, I suggested, "Ezrah, how about this? Could I advance $10,000? Once my situation improves, I'll pay it back."

Ezrah laughed warmly on the other end. "Victoria, don't worry about it. You supported me when I was just starting out. Let me send you $100,000 instead. Use it without any hesitation—consider it my way of saying thanks!"

I felt a lump in my throat, nearly unable to hold back tears. When I initially invested in Ezrah's company, it was because I believed in his project and his capability. I never imagined he would remember my support so deeply.

Choking up, I managed to say, "Ezrah, thank you, truly. I can't express how grateful I am."

"Victoria, it’s no trouble at all. If there's anything else you need, just let me know, and I'll do whatever I can to help."

As I looked at the bank notification confirming the transfer, my emotions were a whirlwind. A business partner I'd known for less than two years was willing to help me without hesitation in my time of need. And my ex-husband? I regretted ever being blind to what kind of person he truly was.

Chapter 7

I hired a reliable caregiver to look after Mom, and then dragged my exhausted self back home. As I pushed open the bedroom door, an overwhelming scent of perfume hit me, sweet and excessively strong. I walked over to the bed and froze. On the bedside table lay a pair of exquisite earrings, platinum set with tiny diamonds—they looked as though they cost a fortune. And they definitely weren’t mine!

There were several unfamiliar strands of golden hair on the pillow. Rage surged through me; Waylon George had dared to cheat with Kendra Parker in our bed! My heart shattered at that moment.

I contacted a moving company and had all my belongings transferred back to Mom's place. Once that was done, I sat in the empty living room, feeling lighter than I had in a long time, as if a tremendous weight had lifted off my shoulders.

Later that evening, Waylon returned.

"Decided to come home, did you? Is your mom doing better?"

I looked him straight in the eye and said firmly, "I want a divorce."

His expression turned cold. "You come back and this is the first thing you say?"

I tossed the divorce papers I had prepared onto the table in front of him. "Take a look yourself."

He flew into a rage. "Victoria Robinson, have you lost your mind? You talk about divorce at the drop of a hat!"

I gazed at him coolly, throwing the earrings in his direction. "Look at these. I found them on the nightstand in our bedroom! And this!" I flung the sealed bag containing the hair at him. "This was on our bed. What else do you have to say for yourself?"

His eyes flickered; he couldn't meet my gaze.

"She suddenly didn't feel well that day, so I just let her rest for a bit..."

"Rest? Waylon George, do you think I'm a fool?" I laughed bitterly. "What do you take me for? Did you really think I was in the dark about your little games?"

"You've been bringing her to our home, acting as if I don't even exist."

"Darling, don't get it wrong. I just felt sorry for her being all alone in a foreign place, wanted to take care of her a bit..."

Waylon was still trying to wriggle his way out with his usual excuses. I was almost amused by how shameless he was.

Ever since Kendra moved into our apartment building last year, Waylon had been frequently visiting her, under the pretense of taking care of a 'fellow expat.' He was attentive to her but increasingly indifferent toward me, his own wife.
