Chapter 1

The new intern claimed she had clairvoyant sight. With just one look, she could tell exactly where the underground gold deposits were.

As the institute’s chief gold prospector, I was deeply embarrassed.

Every time I went through hell to locate a vein, she somehow managed to report it to the institute before I could.

Even the engineering crew working under me was full of complaints.

“What kind of chief prospector is she? Following her means panning in the river one day and digging holes in the mountains the next. We work ourselves half to death and get nothing to show for it!”

“Exactly. Look at Jane. She just joined the institute and has already found two major gold mines. The crews working with her have already earned first-class commendations.”

While the crew complained about me, I began to suspect that someone among them was leaking information.

So the next time I went out to search for gold, I worked alone and finally found a major deposit.

But just as I was about to report it to the institute, I discovered that Jane had beaten me to it again.

That time, I couldn’t hold back anymore. I openly questioned her and accused her of stealing my work.

She fired back, claiming her clairvoyant sight had shown her that I had been secretly pocketing gold from the mine.

Even my fiancé stepped forward and testified against me.

In the end, I was sent to prison on false charges and died there, never able to clear my name.

When I opened my eyes again, I was back on the day my fiancé’s junior apprentice first claimed she had clairvoyant sight.

“Golden Cove is a promising site. The current is slow there, and the water bends around the hillside. Old prospectors used to say that’s where gold settles.”

“And the banks are full of horsetail. That usually means the soil is rich in minerals. I’d estimate this deposit holds more than a hundred tons.”

A familiar voice rang in my ears, and I suddenly snapped back to myself.

I found myself standing at the door of the conference room.

The one speaking confidently onstage was Jane Parker, the new intern who had just joined the institute.

I quickly glanced around. The familiar faces all around me made it hit me at once.

I had been reborn.

Reborn to the very day my fiancé’s junior apprentice first claimed she had clairvoyant sight.

Thunderous applause soon erupted across the room, celebrating the fact that she had once again found a gold mine for the country and brought honor to the institute.

When the applause finally died down, the institute director looked at her with open admiration.

“Jane, you’ve done the institute another great service.”

“Why don’t you share your experience with everyone? Tell us how you managed to find another gold mine so quickly and so accurately.”

Jane tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and answered smugly, “That’s because of my special gift. I’ve had clairvoyant sight ever since I was little. Nothing in this world can escape my eyes. All I have to do is take one look at the mountains and rivers, and I know exactly where the gold is.”

The moment she finished speaking, the room broke into thunderous applause again.

The entire institute was celebrating.

But my heart sank.

Everything was exactly the same as it had been in my last life.

Back then, Jane had also claimed she had clairvoyant sight and could see through everything in the world.

At first, people were skeptical.

But after she repeatedly found major gold deposits with nothing more than a glance, everyone began to believe her without question.

Of course, every one of those so-called discoveries had actually been found through my hard work in the field.

She had simply always managed to report them to the institute before I could.

That only made the engineering crew, who already hated the intensity of the work, resent me even more.

“What kind of chief prospector is she? Following her means panning in rivers one day and digging holes in the mountains the next. We work ourselves half to death and get zero credit for it!”

“Exactly. Look at Jane. She just joined the institute and has already found two major gold mines. The crews working with her have already earned first-class commendations.”

I was furious when I heard the crew complaining.

I suspected they were the ones deliberately leaking information to Jane.

Later, I left the engineering crew behind and found a major gold deposit on my own.

Just when I thought I was finally about to clear my name, I discovered that Jane had once again reported the mine I found before I could.

Outraged, I brought out my field notes and accused Jane of stealing my survey results.

Furious and embarrassed, she turned the tables on me and claimed her clairvoyant sight had revealed that I had been secretly pocketing gold during the exploration process.

My fiancé, Ryan Cole, stepped forward too and sided with his junior apprentice, helping her accuse me.

In the end, I was thrown into prison on false charges and died there with my name never cleared.

My parents tried to fight for justice for me, only to be tricked by Jane into going deep into the mountains, where they were killed.

Heaven finally showed mercy and gave me a second chance.

In this life, I will clear my name.

And the people who harmed me will pay the price they deserve.

Chapter 2

At that moment, Ryan, who was standing beside Jane, noticed me frozen in the doorway.

“Claire Hayes? Didn’t they already notify everyone about the meeting? Why are you only showing up now?”

As he spoke, he strode over, snatched the notebook out of my hands, and flipped through it casually.

The moment he saw what was written inside, his face filled with mockery.

“Don’t tell me you were lurking outside the door eavesdropping just now. What’s in this notebook is exactly the same as what Jane just reported. I’ve got to hand it to you. You write pretty fast.”

The others exchanged glances and laughed, their faces full of ridicule.

“Well, Claire Hayes, your team spent months running around in the wilderness, and now you’re copying an intern’s survey report?”

“Claire Hayes, I’m afraid that title of chief prospector won’t be yours much longer. She takes one look and knows exactly where the gold is. You spend months tossing people around, come back empty-handed, and then try to pass off someone else’s survey as your own. How are you supposed to compete with her?”

Hearing the crew mock me sent a chill straight through me.

But I knew that anything I said right now would be dismissed as an excuse, so I couldn’t be bothered explaining myself.

What mattered most was finding proof that Jane had stolen my survey results.

I didn’t believe for a second that she really had some so-called clairvoyant sight.

Next time, I wouldn’t let her get away with it.

When the next round of prospecting began, I asked the director to keep my survey area confidential and not share my whereabouts with anyone else.

The moment Jane found out I had requested confidentiality, she blocked my path with an indignant look on her face.

“Claire, what exactly is that supposed to mean?

“This time it’s just the two of us leading survey teams. If you’re asking to keep your location secret, then you’re clearly trying to guard against me.”

After hearing that, everyone else looked at me with accusing eyes too.

But I didn’t care in the slightest.

I was convinced that someone had been leaking the locations of the gold deposits I found to Jane ahead of time. Otherwise, there was no way she could keep reporting them before I did.

This time, I wasn’t letting anyone know where I was surveying. I wanted to see how she was going to get my data now.

I had already had my eye on this site before, so it took me less than a week to confirm its exact location and estimated reserves.

But when I excitedly went to report the deposit to the director, I saw her expression grow tighter and tighter, and a bad feeling rose in my chest.

Jane chose that exact moment to speak.

“Claire, I already told the director about that location yesterday. She’s already reported it.”

The director looked at me with disappointment.

“Claire, I know you’ve been under a lot of pressure lately because you haven’t found a mine, but you can’t take shortcuts like this.”

I had no energy to argue with her suspicion.

What I couldn’t understand was how Jane knew the location of the deposit when even my survey site had been kept secret this time.

Had she sent someone to follow me from the start?

Now that I thought about it, the last few days had felt off. I really had kept getting the feeling that someone was trailing me.

Once that thought hit me, I decided to play along.

On the next assignment, I deliberately announced that I would be surveying at Goldcrest Mountain. In reality, the person going there was my most trusted assistant.

I had her wear protective gear and disguise herself as me, then deliberately mark a fake gold deposit at the site.

As for me, I went somewhere else entirely, to the Rosha River, where a real vein was far more likely.

I wanted to see how Jane was going to get herself out of this one.

The moment she heard me openly announce my survey location, Jane sneered at me.

“Well, Claire, what happened to all the mystery this time? Weren’t you the one insisting your survey location had to be confidential? What a joke.

“I know you hate that I stole your spotlight the moment I got here, but I was born with clairvoyant sight. No matter how jealous you are, it won’t change that.”

I couldn’t be bothered responding.

All I wanted was to put my plan into motion as soon as possible, expose her for what she really was, and see if she could still act so smug after that.

Chapter 3

Later, my assistant reported back that someone really had been secretly following her.

The moment I heard that, my heart leaped. The fish had finally taken the bait.

After discovering gold at the Rosha River site, I rushed back to the institute as fast as I could. I arrived just in time to see Jane giving another presentation on a newly discovered gold deposit.

A thrill of anticipation ran through me. I was ready to watch her make a fool of herself.

Instead, she said, “This time, I identified a placer gold deposit at the Rosha River. The estimated reserves are...”

The moment I heard that, I froze.

I had planned everything so carefully, so how had she pulled it off again?

As I watched Jane speaking onstage with complete confidence, frustration and disbelief sank into my chest.

Just then, my fiancé, Ryan, walked over and sneered.

“What, seeing my junior apprentice find another gold deposit got you jealous again?”

“No, I...”

“Oh, spare me. You think I don’t know exactly what kind of person you are? From now on, just follow behind Jane and learn properly. Stop overestimating yourself.”

Before I could finish, Ryan cut me off without a shred of mercy.

I watched as Ryan and the rest of the crew crowded around Jane, congratulating her and slapping high fives.

My heart sank.

Why?

How was Jane getting her hands on my survey results?

Even after getting a second chance, was I still doomed to have my work stolen by her?

After locating several gold deposits in a row, Jane became the rising star of the institute. Some higher-level agencies even wanted to borrow her on temporary assignment.

Meanwhile, my standing at the institute kept sinking lower and lower.

After several surveys in a row turned up nothing, more and more people at the institute started looking down on me.

The engineering crew assigned to me complained nonstop and kept asking to be transferred to Jane’s team.

Rumors even started spreading through the institute that I was deliberately hiding discoveries so I could mine them in secret later.

Just when I was overwhelmed from all sides, the director called me into her office and spoke to me earnestly.

“Claire, I know you’ve been under a lot of pressure lately, and there have been plenty of rumors going around that aren’t doing you any favors.

“But now you’ve got a good chance to clear your name. You need to make the most of it.

“A special instrument from headquarters has detected an enormous gold deposit. The problem is, the target area is huge, and blind excavation would cause major waste. They want our institute to send an expert to pinpoint the exact location, and I recommended you.”

The moment I heard that, I felt a jolt of energy.

But then doubt crept in.

“Director, hasn’t headquarters been very impressed with Jane? If they send me, will they really agree to it?”

“Well... she was just received an excellence award, and is at the awards ceremony right now, so…”

After hearing the director’s explanation, I understood perfectly well that I was only the backup choice.

But I didn’t care.

As long as I seized this opportunity, I could still clear my name.

Over the next few days, I lived rough in the field. I dug pits in the mountains to collect samples, panned river sediment, and analyzed the geological composition by hand.

After relentless work, I finally confirmed that the gold deposit was located on Maple Ridge, on the west bank of the Boundary River.

Once I confirmed the site, I was ecstatic.

I rushed back to the institute overnight, determined to win back at least a little of my reputation.

But by the time I arrived, Jane was already standing at the presentation podium, announcing the exact location of the deposit.

“Maple Ridge, on the west bank of the Boundary River, contains a large amount of quartz veins, and the surrounding area also shows heavy sulfur and arsenic deposits. Those are all strong indicators of gold, so I’m certain the mine is located on Maple Ridge west of the river.

“The estimated reserves are at least one thousand tons. This is a super-giant gold deposit.”

The moment I heard Jane’s explanation, I felt like I’d been struck by lightning.

I stood there in a daze.

Her analysis was word for word what I had written in my notebook.

How was that even possible?
