Chapter 6

The morning sun reflected off the mirrored glass towers of the financial district, but the clean light did nothing to cut the tension in my chest.

I had changed into a charcoal tailored blazer and sharp slacks, leaving Cole’s white dress shirt folded neatly on the counter of the safe house. We had thirty minutes to reach the thirty-fourth floor of the Northstar Financial Center. Marcus was waiting in the executive conference room with the binding asset division documents and the emergency injunction against Julian.

Cole didn't let me walk more than two inches ahead of him.

He moved through the marble lobby with absolute vigilance, his dark eyes scanning the security turnstiles, the delivery couriers, and the line of people waiting at the espresso bar. His tailored black suit hid the holster beneath his left arm, but his posture carried the unmistakable warning of a guard dog waiting for a strike.

When the express elevator opened, it was empty.

I stepped inside, my oxfords silent against the polished brass floor. Cole followed immediately, stepping in so close behind me that his shoulder brushed mine as the heavy doors slid shut.

"You don't need to crowd me," I said, looking straight ahead at the digital floor indicator. "The lobby is secured by my father's private security team."

"Julian was waiting in our loading bay two hours ago," Cole answered, his deep voice vibrating in the small, reflective box. "A five-hundred-million-dollar default turns desperate men reckless. Until Marcus files the restraining order, you stay in my arm's reach."

The elevator began its rapid ascent, the hum of the high-speed cables vibrating through the soles of my shoes.

In the mirrored walls surrounding us, I could see his reflection towering over mine. He was less than six inches away. The crisp, clean scent of cedar and shaving soap rolled off his collar, pulling my mind back to the floor of the loft, to the dark room where he had admitted he wanted me twelve years ago.

My skin felt suddenly warm under the wool of my blazer. I shifted my weight, trying to put distance between us, but the private cab didn't offer enough room to escape his presence.

The digital display climbed past the fifteenth floor.

Sixteen. Seventeen. Eighteen.

A sudden, violent screech of metal tore through the ceiling.

The elevator shuddered so hard the floor dropped an inch beneath my feet. The smooth hum of the engine snapped into a grinding roar, and the entire car came to a dead, jarring halt.

Before I could speak, the overhead LED panels flickered once and died completely.

Pitch blackness swallowed the cab.

"Cole?" The word left my mouth before I could stop it.

"Stay still," he commanded instantly.

His voice was calm, razor-sharp, and right beside my ear. In a fraction of a second, his hand caught my arm, pulling me behind the broad, solid wall of his chest.

I heard the rustle of his jacket, followed by the quiet click of his sidearm clearing the holster.

The faint blue glow of his tactical phone illuminated his face from below. His thumb flew across the screen, checking the diagnostic link.

"What is it?" I asked, keeping my voice low. "Did the power grid trip?"

"The building's main power is fully operational," Cole said, his jaw tight as he studied the data feed. "Someone manually cut the feed to this specific shaft from the secondary maintenance hub on the twentieth floor. The internal camera in this cab was blinded three seconds before the brakes locked."

A cold chill ran down my spine. "Julian?"

"Or someone he hired to stop you from signing those documents," Cole said.

The silence in the elevator grew suffocating. Outside the metal box, the wind in the concrete shaft whistled faintly against the steel cables. The darkness was absolute, heavy and claustrophobic.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I had spent five years projecting total control in high-stakes boardrooms, but standing suspended hundreds of feet in the air in total darkness stripped away every defense I had.

I reached out blindly into the dark.

My fingers brushed the rough fabric of his sleeve, tracked down his forearm, and found his hand.

I didn't think about pride. I didn't think about boundaries. My fingers curled tightly into his calloused palm.

Cole didn't pull away.

His fingers closed firmly over mine, his grip strong, steady, and unyielding. The solid heat of his skin grounded me against the rising panic in my throat.

"I have you, Sloane," he murmured in the dark.

Before the words could fully settle, a loud, explosive snap echoed above the ceiling.

The safety cable groaned.

The entire elevator plummeted.

The floor dropped out from beneath us. The stomach-churning sensation of freefall lasted only a second, but the speed was terrifying.

Cole didn't hesitate.

He spun around in the dark, his left arm wrapping like an iron band around my waist. He hoisted me off the floor and threw his entire body over mine, slamming his broad back hard against the reinforced rear wall of the elevator cab to create a human shield.

*BANG.*

The emergency secondary brakes caught with a brutal, bone-jarring crash.

The impact sent a violent shockwave through the cab. Cole took the entire force of the collision against his spine and shoulders, grunting low in his throat as the heavy metal absorbed the shock. He kept both arms locked around me, pinning me securely against his chest so I wouldn't hit the brass railing.

The car rocked violently on its emergency springs, swaying from side to side before finally coming to a dead, trembling rest.

For three long seconds, the only sound was the harsh, ragged rhythm of our breathing.

A faint hum buzzed through the control panel.

The amber emergency light in the ceiling flickered to life, casting a warm, low glow across the interior of the elevator.

I looked up.

We were pressed completely flush together. My hands were planted flat against his chest, feeling the heavy, thunderous thump of his heartbeat beneath his shirt. Cole's arms were still locked tight around my lower back, holding my hips firmly against his thighs.

His face was inches from mine.

His dark hair was slightly mussed, a single strand falling across his forehead. His eyes were wide, dark, and intense, searching my face with a raw, electric focus that made the air vanish from my lungs.

Our breath mingled in the narrow space between our lips.

The sheer physical reality of him—his heat, his strength, the absolute authority in the way his body held mine—struck me like a physical blow. The vulnerability of the moment hit me all at once.

My hands trembled against his chest. I pulled my fingers back, suddenly terrified of how easily my body leaned into his.

A mechanical chime echoed from the ceiling.

The floor indicator blinked with a dull hum, reading *Floor 22.* The auxiliary power kicked the emergency leveling system into gear, and the heavy metal doors slowly began to slide open with a loud screech.

Bright fluorescent light from the twenty-second floor hallway flooded the dark cab.

Two building security guards and a maintenance technician stood on the other side, tools in hand, their faces pale with shock.

"Are you two alright?" the lead guard shouted, stepping forward. "The secondary breaker blew—"

Cole didn't look at the guards. He didn't move away.

His arm remained clamped around my waist, his thumb resting firmly against the curve of my hip. His gaze stayed locked on mine, taking in my flushed cheeks, the rapid rise and fall of my chest, and the faint tremor in my hands.

He ran a quick, searching glance over my shoulders and arms, ensuring every part of me was unbroken.

"You're not hurt," he said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp.

"I'm fine," I whispered, my voice barely audible over the hum of the hallway lights.

I looked down at his large hand still resting against my waist, holding me so tightly that our clothes were crushed together.

"You can stop holding me now," I said.

Cole didn't let go. His dark eyes lingered on my mouth for one endless second before meeting my gaze again.

"I know," he said.
