Chapter 3

The church was filled with the low murmur of voices and the soft click of hymnals as the funeral service for Lily began. I sat in the front row, my hands resting on my knees, the weight of the past few days still clinging to me from the hospital. The air carried the sharp scent of lilies and the faint warmth of candle wax. Rebecca appeared without warning, pushing through the crowd at the back and making her way down the aisle like she belonged there. She ignored the shocked glances and slid into the family section right next to Andrew, her movements quick and sure.

She held a folded tissue tight against her chest. Then she reached for the blue headphones on the bench beside her, picking them up and positioning them over the open coffin as if they were part of the final goodbye she wanted to take for herself. "I want her to have them back," she said, her voice low and trembling.

I stood up from my seat and moved toward the coffin without speaking. When she lifted the headphones toward the coffin, I stepped in and grabbed them from her hands, my fingers wrapping around the soft ear cups and pulling them away. The identification sticker still showed Lily's name in her careful letters, catching the light. Rebecca's eyes filled with tears right away, her hands reaching out in a small motion, but I ignored every bit of it, my focus locked on the cold line I needed to draw.

"You already said goodbye. The moment you walked away with these," I told her, my voice steady and flat.

I turned and pointed at the main door of the church. "Get out. This is not your place."

The words cut through the air, loud enough for the people nearby to hear. Rebecca started crying harder, clutching the tissue closer to her face, but I didn't pause or look back. Andrew jumped up from his seat beside her, his face twisted with disbelief. "Grace, what are you doing? This is too cruel!"

I didn't answer him. Instead, I walked back to my empty spot in the front row and sat down there, my hands resting on the pew in front of me. "I’m the only parent she has left."

The statement landed plain and final, the service continuing around me as I claimed that seat. Andrew stood frozen for a moment, then sank back down, his expression still stunned. Rebecca kept crying, wiping at her eyes with the sleeve of her dress, but I stayed where I was, staring straight ahead at the altar.

After the service ended and the mourners started filing out, a man in a suit from the brand's production team found me in the hallway outside the main doors. He had a tablet in one hand and looked serious. "Grace, I have the full recording from the brand's live stream. It's complete and I wanted to give it to you privately."

He handed me the tablet and I took it, heading into a quiet empty room off the corridor. I shut the door behind me and sat at the small table inside. I played the video and watched it unfold frame by frame.

The footage showed the parade from across the street in sharp detail. Andrew had reached out and forcibly pulled the headphones off Lily's head, his hands gripping them hard as he pressed her back down onto the bench. She struggled under his weight, her small body twisting, but he held her there firmly with his arms and torso until she stopped struggling. Then he stood, took Rebecca by the arm, and walked away with her. The time stamp on the video made it clear they had been gone twenty-six minutes. All along, Andrew was taking photos of Rebecca, his phone held up casually, his face relaxed and smiling as he clicked each picture, focused only on her.

I watched the entire sequence without changing my expression, the calm settling over me like something steady and final. When the video ended, I set the tablet down. My fingers moved to my hand and slowly removed the wedding ring, placing it on the table. I pulled the divorce agreement I had printed before the service from my bag, picked up the pen from the holder, and signed it, the pen moving across the lines with no pause or hesitation. The document was done. I picked up my bag from the floor and walked toward the front doors as I left the church behind.
