Chapter 3: New Beginning
Eliza remained throughout the night within the dusty sealed office in the Thorne Family Estate. She stayed awake. She didn't require rest. Rest was, for the wife she once was. The woman present now was honed by intent driven by the icy surge of tactical thinking.
The early rays of Veridia City’s dawn filtered through the tall leaded glass windows, illuminating particles of dust. At one time she had stood here clad in ivory dresses. Now she donned a utilitarian suit she had kept out of sight for years—a suit meant for meetings, not dances.
Her fingers glided smoothly across the keypad of the satellite phone as she completed the encrypted call to London.
“The original directive is explicit Mr. Chen " she stated, her tone calm and composed. "Valerius Capital itself is off-limits. Everything surrounding it is fair game. Our first move is to dismantle Marcus Thorne.”
“An initial step, Miss Thorne " Mr. Chen responded, calm and calculated despite the distance between them. "Marcus is the point in your family. Increase pressure. He will collapse. His fear will expose the underlying plot. We’ll leverage Stellar Group’s reserves to obliterate his leftover assets. It will be conspicuous, public and utterly unavoidable, for your ex-husband.”
“Fine, " Eliza replied, her tone calm. "Initiate the sale by noon Veridia time. Don’t give him any chance to recover. I want the rumor mills to be buzzing about the Thorne family fracturing before the market shuts down.”
The call concluded. The initial phase of her business offensive had started.
Eliza secured the office door behind her. Embraced her new persona with intentional composure. She would never again live her life, as Mrs. Damon Valerius.
She operated an unbranded Thorne family car—selected deliberately as it attracted no notice. Her route led to a low-profile security company located on the neglected border of the city distant from the shiny financial center.
“I want all phone numbers, emails and electronic files connected to Eliza Valerius deleted " she directed the firm’s owner, a weathered exsecurity head who had previously worked for her father. "Make sure she disappears from all databases within four hours.”
He nodded promptly. ". Which name takes her spot, Miss?”
Eliza gazed at her image, in the office glass. A woman shaped by flames returned the gaze.
“My name is Eliza Sterling " she stated. "Refer to me by that name in all communications and agreements. Eliza Sterling holds the position of CEO, at Stellar Group.”
---
Afterward she acted swiftly. She obtained an apartment close to Stellar Group Tower. It wasn’t a penthouse. Not a statement. Simply a neat peaceful practical place to create her start.
She purchased a closet—sleek suits in charcoal and navy. No longer fragile ivory. No longer soft silk. She was no longer interested in appearing delicate again.
By midday she found herself inside an office within the incomplete Stellar Group Tower—an environment buzzing with sounds, drive and untapped possibilities. An ideal backdrop for transformation.
A video call appeared on her screen. Mr. Chen.
“The strike against Marcus succeeded, Miss Sterling " he conveyed from the London trading floor. "We began the sale at 11:45. His primary holding company fell apart twenty-five minutes after. He is rushing to find lawyers. None will aid him.”
“He won’t receive assistance, " Eliza said. "Damon never had any concern for Marcus. Marcus was merely a cover for the family’s debt. Now he poses a danger. Damon will allow him to fail.”
“Nevertheless " Mr. Chen continued, "the downfall has drawn media attention. News titles suggest a ‘Thorne Civil War’. Ponder the ‘enigmatic CEO leading Stellar Group.’ You have been noticed. Mr. Valerius is now completely aware.”
Fine. She required his concentration. She desired him attentively. She wanted him terrified.
Eliza bent closer examining the chart displayed on her monitor—a layout of Valerius Capital’s concealed debt framework, familiar to her, from her grandfather’s secret records.
“When Damon encounters a foe he responds " she stated. "We shall provide him with one.”
“Mr. Chen initiated the bond acquisitions on Thursday " she proceeded. "Don’t apply much pressure now. Concentrate on areas. We compel him to decide between safeguarding an asset or safeguarding his financial statements.”
“Which cherished possession?" Mr. Chen inquired. She could sense he was already aware.
“The Veridia City Foundation, for the Arts " she replied. "His shining endeavor. His public heritage. If he sells off the entity linked to it he sacrifices his valued reputation. If he safeguards it the default will damage his stock value.. When the value drops sufficiently… we act.”
“A crafted predicament, " Mr. Chen remarked. ". Efficient.”
“He showed me how to measure the price of ambition, " Eliza whispered. "Now I will show him the price of cruelty.”
---
Eliza hung up the phone.
Within a span of, then twelve hours she wiped out her former existence, created a fresh persona, destroyed Marcus Thorne’s economic status and laid a snare that would corner Damon Valerius in full public view. Each action she took was. Ruthless.
She. Moved toward the incomplete border of the office gazing out at the shimmering skyline of Veridia City. The Valerius Capital headquarters loomed away—chilly, towering and proud.
She could nearly glimpse the penthouse where Damon had previously removed her from his life.
Beneath her the noise of construction thundered. The noise of restoration. The noise of tomorrow is taking form.
The Valerius family once owned this city. She intended to dismantle it bit by bit and reconstruct it under the name Sterling.
He believes he expelled a girl. He was mistaken. I want my business returned.. I want compensation.
This was no longer survival. This was strategy. This was war.
And she had already fired the opening shot.
Chapter 4: The First Confrontation
Damon Valerius did not erupt in fury. Rather he adopted a strategic mindset. He was a man who thrived on measured gambles and the strike, against Marcus Thorne’s holdings—holdings subtly linked to Valerius Capital’s standing—was precise, unanticipated and intimate. It didn’t result in a financial loss but it robbed him of something much more valuable: time.. Within Veridia City time was the most valuable commodity.
He remained on the gleaming granite surface of the Valerius Capital trading floor unaffected by the ongoing buzz of trades and market chatter. His chief strategist, Greg, a man perpetually appearing drained gripped a report as if it were something to handle.
"Stellar Group. We conducted an investigation, sir " Greg whispered. "The financing is legitimate. Offshore accounts are pristine shell corporations, with huge financial support. However the CEO remains unidentified. Likely a woman, inferred from the signature on the SEC document. An individual operating under the name Eliza Sterling."
Damon’s jaw clenched tightly. Eliza Sterling. That name was far too familiar. It was the name of the Thorne family’s matriarch Eliza’s grandmother—a woman renowned for her influence and heritage. Selecting that name was deliberate. It sent a signal. Damon immediately realized who was concealed beneath the disguise. No stranger could have singled out Marcus accurately unless they were fully aware of his vulnerabilities.
"It’s her, " Damon stated, his tone even. "It’s Eliza."
"Sir, that doesn’t seem correct, " Greg responded, shaking his head. "Your wife—your ex-wife—didn't possess any money herself. She rejected the settlement.. She lacked the skills to carry out something this complicated."
"Her feigned helplessness was never genuine " Damon retorted, recalling the resolve in her gaze as she departed. "She declined the offer to make me undervalue her. She distanced herself completely from me to get ready for this. She has been scheming from the instant I became aware."
His occupational worry morphed into something more intimate. The woman he expelled from his life was not fragile. She was perilous. She had transformed her disgrace into a weapon.
---
Two days afterward the subsequent strike arrived right on schedule. Thursday.
The document on Damon’s desk outlined the compelled covenant dilemma facing the Veridia City Foundation for the Arts. The assault’s accuracy was exacting. His reputation—his meticulously managed asset—was abruptly at risk. He was confronted with two options, each.. Cash out an offshore fund to stabilize his finances or shield the Foundation and jeopardize Valerius Capital’s share value.
He understood that he couldn’t allow the Foundation to collapse. The political fallout would ruin the three city contracts he was in the process of negotiating.
He banged his hand on the table. "Arrange a meeting " he commanded. "I want the CEO of Stellar Group here directly. No intermediaries. No reasons to delay."
Eliza, who is now recognized as Eliza Sterling got the notification while examining the concluding legal action, against Marcus Thorne.
She remained calm. She avoided haste. She just smiled—the gentle quiet smile of a person whose snare had snapped shut flawlessly.
She instructed Mr. Chen "Inform Mr. Valerius that CEO Sterling can meet tomorrow at noon. However it won't be at his office. The gathering is set for the Grand Viridian Art Museum."
The decision felt like a knife pressed against his throat. It was the core of the Foundation—the site he was now fighting to defend. She compelled him to confront her in the realm of his vulnerability.
---
The day the Grand Viridian Art Museum remained silent, the atmosphere heavy, with the gentle presence of history and affluence.
Eliza was the earliest to show up. Her black charcoal suit exuded the assured dominance of someone who had ceased to seek approval from others. She positioned herself beneath an abstract artwork—chaotic, broken, fierce. An apt representation of her transformed self. She was no longer the woman dressed in ivory. She had become a force to be reckoned with.
At noon Damon Valerius entered, breaking the silence like a pebble tossed into placid water. His bespoke suit hinted at affluence. His face was cold, like ice.
The moment he laid eyes on her his fury transformed into something. It was her though also different. The recognizable traits stayed. The gentleness had disappeared. Her tied-back hair revealed a jawline etched with determination. Her eyes didn’t beg anymore—they challenged.
He went directly to her. No hello. No politeness.
"You " he murmured quietly. "I recognized it was you."
Eliza offered him the icy composed smile she had when she left that evening. "You're tardy Mr. Valerius. The market shut down hours ago. Do you come as the leader of Valerius Capital or the guardian of the Foundation for the Arts?"
"Do you seriously believe this is some kind of game?" Damon moved nearer, closing the distance the tension in the air. Their past lingered strongly coiled and intense like a wire, on the verge of igniting.
"I believe you committed an error " she answered calmly. "You tied the knot with me to safeguard your realm.. When you came to your senses you discarded me as if I were worthless.. You overlooked the reality. I am aware of every vulnerability in your kingdom."
"The Foundation is an organization " he responded. "Going after it is careless. It's an act of sabotage.. It will damage your reputation as well."
"My standing is founded on effectiveness " she stated calmly. "Yours relies on acting as the city's supposed savior. Want to guard your reputation? Go ahead.. There’ll be a cost."
She maintained her gaze firmly as she stated her conditions.
"I demand ten percent of your infrastructure branch " she stated. "At a thirty percent markdown.. I claim the board position that Marcus Thorne occupies."
Damon stood still, shock flashing in his gaze. She wasn’t after money. She sought control—within his domain inside his business. She aimed for Marcus’s position.. The assault on her cousin suddenly became completely clear.
"You’re insisting on a takeover of Valerius Capital " he sneered. "You overestimate the importance of your role."
"Do I?" Eliza whispered softly. "You have a day. If you decline your default, the Foundation will be revealed tomorrow at nine. Your shares will plummet. You’ll forfeit the city contracts. I’m not making a threat. You miscalculated me once. Don’t make that error again."
She moved away, dissolving the proximity between them. A brief nod, toward Mr. Finch marked the conclusion of the gathering.
Damon remained solitary under the artwork, his composed facade beginning to fracture. Anger clashed with admiration. She had struck him at his core, executing it perfectly.
Eliza stepped into the daylight wearing a faint knowing grin.
She had triumphed in the fight.
The war had begun, and she had just struck at the heart of his world.
Chapter 5: The First Victory
Damon Valerius failed to respond to Eliza’s ultimatum within the day she demanded. Instead he replied in twenty-three hours. His reply was not one of capitulation. A precise and deliberate decision. He realized she had trapped him regarding the Foundation for the Arts. The danger, to his standing and political power was far too significant to ignore.
His agreement was not delivered via telephone. It appeared as a legal contract transmitted directly to the Stellar Group’s recently established secure servers in Veridia City. He consented to all terms. The prompt sale of a ten percent share in his infrastructure branch, at a valuation discounted by thirty percent. The assignment of the board position formerly occupied by Marcus Thorne to Eliza Sterling.
The arrangement drained more from him than he cared to acknowledge. It was straightforward and defensive. It preserved the Foundation. Allowed Damon space to plan a more powerful retaliatory strike. What he failed to realize was that, for Eliza the pact was not the endpoint. It served as the gateway unlocking the stronghold.
---
Eliza got the documents as she stood on the observation deck of her flagship tower. A quiet contentment filled her chest. She refrained from celebrating. Rather she conducted a composed video conference, with Mr. Chen.
“The primary goal is achieved, Miss Sterling " Mr. Chen remarked while examining the documents. "We are now shareholders in the key division of Valerius Capital. Your place, on the board is guaranteed. Marcus Thorne has been stripped of his significant role and the press is already covering his collapse.”
“Perfect " Eliza remarked as she examined the chart displayed on her screen. "The percentage isn’t the triumph Mr. Chen. The true success lies in gaining access. Holding that board position allows me to initiate audits scrutinize trends and most crucially compel a fresh investigation into the initial event.”
She was aware that Marcus would respond with alarm. Disorder would. She intended to leverage it to accelerate her plan.
“Initiate the audit of every Valerius Capital transaction associated with the Thorne Family accounts covering the three months preceding Mr. Valerius’s accident " Eliza instructed. "Begin with the wire transfers. Marcus is avaricious not clever.”
Regarding Damon she anticipated that his forthcoming action would aim at dominating her.
---
Damon’s reply was swift and fierce, in the arena. Unable to confront Stellar Group’s financials head-on he targeted Eliza’s character instead.
Veridia City headlines screamed allegations. Valerius Capital Extorted by Former Spouse. CEO Sterling Involved in Controversy.
The articles depicted Eliza as an ex-partner who leveraged insider information to compel Damon into selling at a reduced price. Their intent was to undermine her reputation, among investors and government authorities.
“They are attempting to label you as a gold-digger who altered her approach " Mr. Chen said worriedly.
Eliza browsed the articles with indifference. "He relies on the portrayal of the desperate woman he abandoned. Unable to refute the deal he targets the motive, behind it.”
However Damon had misjudged her more. She had anticipated this strike.
She directed Mr. Chen to distribute a chosen set of documents to reputable financial reporters excluding the tabloid media. These records disclosed the safeguarding choices Grandfather Valerius had undertaken long ago to preserve family wealth. They demonstrated that the arranged marriage was a form of protection than a quest, for influence.
Significantly the archive revealed the enormous settlement she had declined.
The response was immediate and intense. Headlines shifted from blame to praise. The word blackmail vanished from the press’s language. She was now seen as a leader championing the truth. Damon’s defamation effort fell apart. Became a significant public victory, for Eliza.
---
Marcus Thorne, frightened by the loss of his board position and anxious, about the audit took a desperate action.
He disclosed a report, to a minor news organization alleging that Stellar Group’s initial funding was illicitly sourced via secret offshore routes. His aim was to block all assets managed by the company.
Eliza discovered this leak during a charity gala the kind Sloane Ashford typically controlled. She moved to a corner and assessed the impact. Although the leak was crudely constructed it was sufficiently risky to warrant an inquiry.
She remained composed. She reached out to Mr. Chen. Requested the publication of a full independently audited report of Stellar Group’s financials. It confirmed the company’s authenticity, beyond question.
She then included a lethal piece of information. The audit’s metadata held the time and place of the illicit leak. It pinpointed Marcus Thorne’s office, within the Valerius Capital headquarters.
She went back, into the ballroom. Sloane Ashford came up to her immediately with a smile that appeared both charming and deadly.
“Oh Eliza " Sloane murmured with worry. "What a dreadful rumor. They claim regulators are keeping an eye on you now. It’s unfortunate you turned down Damon’s offer. Superior lawyers could have kept you safe.”
Eliza returned her look, with serenity. She made no effort to clarify.
“Thank you for your concern, Sloane " she replied with decisiveness. "However your data is outdated." She hesitated briefly. "The audit confirming Stellar Group’s authenticity was published thirty minutes ago. The metadata identifying the origin of the leak has already been handed over to the financial crime investigators.”
Sloane’s grin vanished from her expression.
Eliza moved nearer speaking to Sloane. "Inform Damon that I am ready for his lawyers in court. Let Marcus know he needs to get ready, for jail.”
She. Left, leaving Sloane standing still and ashen.
Eliza had established her base acquired her initial stakes in Valerius Capital dismantled Damon’s defamation effort and caught the individual responsible, for ruining her family. This marked her significant triumph, a definite proof of her power and cleverness.
She stepped outside the gala into the cool night air. A dangerous calm filled her. Damon and Sloane had worked against her. Now she would use every piece of their plan against them. She was ahead, and the game had become far more dangerous.
