🐺 CHAPTER EIGHT - Moonblood Secrets

The night was too quiet.

Lyra felt it the moment she stepped outside. The air was still, unnaturally heavy, like the forest itself was holding its breath. The moon hung low and swollen, glowing an eerie shade of crimson-a Moonblood night. Kael had warned her about this kind of moon, but she hadn't understood until now how wrong everything felt beneath it.

She wrapped her cloak tighter around herself, shivering. Not from the cold-but from the way her mark pulsed violently beneath her skin, reacting to the strange energy in the air.

Kael appeared beside her without a sound.

His presence was solid, grounding... but tonight he looked different.

Sharper. Wilder. Shadows clung to him like a second skin.

"The Moonblood rises once every ten years," he said, eyes fixed on the red moon. "It brings out the truth in everything. In the forest... in wolves... and in us."

Lyra swallowed. "What truth?"

Kael turned his gaze to her, silver eyes glowing like molten metal.

"The truth you've been feeling," he said softly. "The Oath doesn't just bind power. It binds fate."

Her breath caught.

Before she could respond, a low howl echoed from deep within the forest-long, broken, and unlike any wolf she had ever heard. Kael stiffened instantly, his jaw clenching.

"That wasn't one of ours," he growled. "Darkfangs are moving under the Moonblood."

Lyra's heart slammed against her ribs. "Should we warn the pack?"

Kael shook his head. "No. They already know. But there's something else-something they can't sense."

He stepped closer to her, lowering his voice.

"Your visions. The Moonblood will trigger them. You're going to see something tonight-something dangerous."

Lyra's pulse quickened. "I don't want another vision."

"You don't get to choose," Kael said gently. "But you won't face it alone."

The howling grew louder-closer-echoing through the trees.

Kael's eyes flicked toward the forest.

"They're searching for you. The Seer. The one the prophecy spoke of."

Lyra froze.

"...What prophecy?"

Kael hesitated. Too long.

"Kael," she whispered. "Tell me."

His voice was low, tense.

"'When the Seer rises under the Bloodmoon, the Alpha she is bound to will either save the pack... or destroy it.'"

Lyra's stomach twisted. "Destroy it?"

Kael stepped closer, cupping her face gently but urgently.

"Lyra, listen to me-prophecies are not destiny. You control your power. Not the moon. Not the Oath."

His warmth steadied her... but only for a moment.

Because the ground suddenly trembled.

Lyra gasped as a violent surge of energy shot through her mark, spreading across her body like fire. Her eyes burned, vision blurring, and Kael caught her just as her knees buckled.

"Lyra!" he shouted, panic in his voice.

But she wasn't in the forest anymore.

A vision consumed her.

She saw flames. Wolves fighting shadows.

Kael on his knees, blood staining his chest.

Her own hands glowing silver as cracks of light split the earth open beneath them.

And then-

A voice whispered in her mind, dark and cold.

"The Seer brings the end."

Lyra screamed.

The vision snapped, and she fell forward, panting, shaking uncontrollably. Kael held her tightly, arms wrapped around her as if anchoring her to the world.

"What did you see?" he whispered, breath trembling.

Lyra looked up at him, tears streaming down her face.

"You," she choked. "Kael... I saw you dying."

His eyes hardened-not with fear, but with determination.

"Then we change the future," he said. "Together."

Before she could respond, the forest exploded with movement-shapes sprinting through the trees, dark fur, glowing red eyes.

The Darkfangs had found them.

Kael pushed her behind him, shifting in a blur of silver light, his wolf form erupting with power.

"Lyra," he growled, voice animalistic but clear,

"stay behind me-protect your mark. If they touch you, the prophecy begins."

Lyra's heart thundered.

The prophecy.

The Moonblood.

The vision of Kael dying in her arms.

And the shadows coming closer.

She straightened her spine, fire rising in her veins.

"No," she whispered. "I won't let that happen."

Her mark blazed, brighter than ever-

and the night exploded into battle.

🐺 CHAPTER NINE - The Moonblood Hunt

The forest erupted into chaos.

Darkfang wolves burst through the trees, shadows ripping free from the underbrush. Their eyes glowed red with Moonblood fury, their growls vibrating through the ground. Lyra stumbled back as three launched themselves toward her, claws slashing through the air.

Kael moved faster.

His massive silver wolf form collided with the first Darkfang mid-air, sending it crashing into a tree. Another snapped at him, teeth grazing his flank, but he spun with lethal precision-jaws clamping onto its throat.

"Lyra-MOVE!" Kael's voice echoed through the Oath, ringing in her bones.

She ducked as a Darkfang leapt over Kael's back, heading straight for her. Instinct told her to run-

But the mark burned and something inside her snapped.

"No," she whispered.

And the mark answered.

Silver fire surged from her arm, blazing across her skin. The energy formed a barrier in front of her, crackling like lightning. The Darkfang collided with it and flew backward, smoke rising from its fur.

Lyra stared at her glowing hand.

"Did I-did I just do that?"

Kael pivoted, his wolf eyes fierce. "Good. Again."

But Lyra barely had time to breathe. More Darkfangs rushed from every direction-drawn to her, driven by prophecy and Moonblood madness.

One of them-a massive, scarred wolf with pitch-black fur-lifted its head and howled, voice scraping like something dead.

"The Seer is here," it growled.

"Take her mark."

Lyra stepped back, heart slamming against her ribs.

Kael snarled so loudly the trees shook.

"Over my dead body."

He lunged at the scarred wolf, claws ripping into its side. The Darkfang Alpha countered, teeth locking around Kael's shoulder. Kael roared in pain, twisting violently, forcing the creature to release him.

Lyra froze.

Her vision flashed.

A glimpse of Kael... bleeding.

Falling.

Her hands glowing as the ground cracked beneath them.

"No."

She clenched her fists. "Not again. Not tonight."

A Darkfang pounced toward her from behind.

Lyra whipped around-too late-

But the Oath reacted before she could.

Kael felt her fear.

The silver wolf flashed across the clearing in a blur, knocking the Darkfang away from her with a brutal shoulder slam. His eyes glowed, wolf and man overlapping for a heartbeat.

"I told you," he said, voice trembling with fury and fear,

"no one touches you."

The scarred Darkfang laughed, low and cruel, blood dripping from its fangs.

"Protect her all you want, Alpha. When the Moonblood rises, the Seer always breaks."

Lyra felt the energy inside her spike.

"Leave him alone!" she cried.

The mark exploded.

A pulse of silver light erupted from her body, blasting outward in a wide shockwave. The forest shook. Leaves and dirt whipped into the air. Darkfangs were thrown off their feet, yelping as silver burned into their shadows.

Even Kael staggered, stunned.

Lyra sagged forward, trembling.

"What... was that?"

Kael shifted back into human form, chest heaving, blood dripping from his shoulder. He cupped her face, eyes wide with something she had never seen before-

Fear.

"Lyra... that wasn't a shield."

He swallowed hard.

"That was raw Seer power. You could level a pack with that."

Her heart dropped.

The prophecy's words echoed in her mind:

The Alpha she is bound to will either save the pack... or destroy it.

The scarred Darkfang rose again, limping but grinning.

"See?" it rasped. "She is the end."

Kael's eyes blazed with rage.

He stepped in front of Lyra, voice low and lethal.

"No. She is mine."

He lunged-

But the Darkfangs were already retreating, melting back into the forest. Their leader's final words drifted on the wind:

"We will return on the next Bloodmoon. And she will choose destruction."

Silence fell.

Lyra's legs gave out and she collapsed. Kael caught her instantly, pulling her against his chest.

"It was a vision," she whispered, shaking.

"Kael-I saw you dying again."

His grip tightened around her.

"Then we fight fate," he murmured into her hair.

"Together. No matter what the moon shows."

But Lyra wasn't sure fate could be changed anymore.

Not after what she'd just unleashed.

And far away, deep in the forest, the Darkfang Alpha smiled-

Because the Moonblood had only begun

🐺 CHAPTER TEN - The Alpha's Wound

The moment they crossed the threshold into the lodge, Lyra felt Kael's strength falter.

His steps slowed. His breaths became shallow. Blood soaked the side of his shirt from the bite on his shoulder, dark crimson dripping down his arm. He tried to hide it-he always tried-but the Moonblood glow made the wound look worse, shadows clinging to the edges like poison.

"Sit down," Lyra said urgently, guiding him toward the long wooden bench.

"I'm fine," he muttered.

But when he tried to take another step, his knees buckled.

Lyra caught him before he hit the floor, panic rising like a tidal wave.

"Kael!"

She eased him onto the bench, her hands trembling. "You're not fine-there was something wrong with that bite. It wasn't a normal wolf wound."

Kael gritted his teeth, sweat beading along his forehead.

"That Darkfang was corrupted..." He winced. "Moonblood venom. It slows healing. Weakens my wolf."

Lyra's stomach twisted. "How do we fix it?"

Kael looked away-too quickly.

"Kael," she whispered, voice shaking. "Tell me."

His jaw clenched.

"It has to be purified."

"That's good-how?"

He finally met her eyes, silver glowing faintly.

"The Seer. Only a Seer can pull venom from a living Alpha."

A chill raced through her.

"You mean... me?"

Kael nodded once.

"Yes. But it's dangerous. The venom will fight you. It might attack your power-your mind."

Lyra swallowed hard. "What happens if we don't try?"

Kael exhaled, slow and controlled.

"I shift."

He paused.

"And I don't shift back."

She stared at him, heart sinking.

The idea of Kael trapped in his wolf form, lost to madness, tore something inside her open.

"No," she said fiercely. "I won't let that happen."

He gave her a tired, broken smile.

"You're getting brave on me."

Lyra knelt in front of him, placing her hands gently on his wounded shoulder. The skin around the bite pulsed with sickly red veins, spreading slowly across Kael's chest.

"Tell me what to do," she said.

Kael inhaled sharply as her fingers brushed his skin.

"The Oath will guide you. Focus on the mark-focus on me. You have to pull the venom out and burn it with your power."

His voice weakened, growing more strained.

"Lyra... hurry."

She closed her eyes.

Her mark flared instantly, reacting to Kael's pain.

Silver light crawled up her arm, warm at first-then blistering hot. She gasped but didn't let go.

She reached inward, letting the Oath show her Kael's energy.

Suddenly she saw it-

like two colors inside him:

➡ silver - Kael

➡ black-red - the venom

They were tangled together, fighting.

Hurting him.

Lyra pushed her power toward the venom.

It recoiled, hissing like something alive.

Kael arched in pain.

"Lyra-" he gasped. "Don't stop."

She forced more energy into the wound.

The venom surged toward her hand, burning cold, stabbing up her arm like ice needles. Lyra cried out but held on tighter.

Kael's hand shot up, grabbing hers, squeezing hard. His eyes glowed wolf-bright, jaw clenched as he tried not to shift.

She pushed harder.

The venom started tearing free from his veins, threads of darkness pulling outward, wrapping around her wrist like smoke.

Lyra screamed-but she didn't let go.

Kael pulled her closer, pressing his forehead against hers, voice a desperate whisper:

"Stay with me... please."

His plea gave her the strength she needed.

With a final surge of silver light, Lyra ripped the venom free. It burst into the air like a cloud of black mist-

-and she burned it with a flash of pure Seer power.

The room fell silent.

Kael collapsed forward, breathing hard, sweat dripping from his brow. Lyra caught him, pulling him into her arms, tears streaming down her face.

His wound closed before her eyes.

"Kael?" she whispered, shaking.

He looked up at her slowly... then gave a soft, exhausted smile.

"You did it," he murmured. "You saved me."

Lyra let out a sob of relief, resting her forehead against his.

But before she could speak-

He gently cupped her cheek, thumb brushing away a tear.

"Lyra..." His voice was soft, raw.

"You can't imagine what it does to me when I think I might lose you."

She went still.

The Oath pulsed between them-slow, deep... intimate.

Kael swallowed, eyes locked on hers.

"This bond... it's changing. I can feel it. And I don't know if it's the Moonblood... or you."

Lyra's heart pounded.

But before she could answer, a knock slammed against the door.

"Alpha! The Council is here. They demand to speak about the Seer-now."

Kael stiffened.

Lyra's breath caught.

The Council.

The prophecy.

And the vision of Kael dying.

Everything was about to change.
