Chapter 1

In the operating room,I lay supine on the operating table.

Gazing up at the ceiling, my mind was consumed by a single, unwavering thought: to donate my bone marrow to Mateo for transplantation, so that his leukemia could be cured.

Slowly, I closed my eyes, and surrendered myself to the encroaching darkness brought on by the anesthesia.

As my consciousness gradually blurred, I was plunged into a maelstrom of memories, hurtling back to that fateful avalanche a few years ago.

The snow - capped mountains, once a magnificent and breathtaking sight, transformed in an instant into a hellish battlefield of death.

An overwhelming wall of snow surged towards us.

At that moment, my boyfriend Henry, who was traveling with me along with Amara, let go of my hand without hesitation.

He turned around and grabbed Amara, and the two of them fled in a hurry,.

Despair drowned me completely.

Just when I thought my life was about to end, a figure emerged from the panicked crowd. It was Mateo!

Mateo pulled me tightly into his embrace, using his body as a solid bulwark to shield me.

Amidst the deafening roar and the raging fury of the avalanche, he led me on a perilous quest for survival.

In that moment, I seemed to have found my life's anchor.

After that harrowing adventure, I resolutely parted ways with Henry.

Before long, Mateo proposed to me.

Our married life was peaceful and blissful, with every ordinary day filled with love.

However, fate played another cruel joke.

Not long ago, Mateo was diagnosed with leukemia.

Just when I was feeling utterly desperate and helpless, during a physical examination, the doctor discovered that our bone marrow compatibility was extremely high.

Without a moment's hesitation, I made up my mind to step onto this operating table.

Months later, I gradually recovered, and Mateo was getting better day by day.

Then, I received another piece of wonderful news - I was pregnant.

Holding the prenatal examination report, my heart was like a caged and exuberant fawn.

I trotted all the way home, and before I even had the chance to change my shoes, I eagerly called out Mateo's name.

However, there was no response.

I tiptoed towards the bedroom and faintly heard voices coming from inside.

"Amara, don't worry. These bone marrows are enough to sustain you for a while. This child is nothing but a donor for your bone marrow transplantation,"

Standing outside the room, tears streamed down my face uncontrollably.

Back then, I was naive enough to think that I had met true love and regarded Mateo as my savior.

Saving me, marrying me, and having a child with me were all just for the sake of getting a bone marrow donor for his beloved Amara.

Hearing the sound at the door, Mateo immediately hung up the phone and pushed the door open.

"Sakura, have you been waiting long? I just went to buy your favorite cake. How was the prenatal check - up? Is the baby okay?" Mateo looked at me with apparent sincerity.

A bitter smile curled up on my lips.

I had seen this box of cake in Amara's hospital room. The so - called specially - bought gift was nothing but something she had discarded.

Standing outside the room, tears streamed down my face uncontrollably.

Back then, I was naive enough to think that I had met true love and regarded Mateo as my savior.

While I was lost in thought, Mateo took my hand and carefully leaned his head against my belly.

"Sakura, you have no idea how happy I am. I swear, after the baby is born, I will be good to you and the child for the rest of my life."

I made an excuse that I was tired and subtly pushed Mateo away.

After receiving a text message, Mateo rushed out in a hurry.

I went to his study. On the bookshelves and in the computer, there were all kinds of materials about bone marrow transplantation.

This man, who had always been so proud, also had a carefully - kept diary filled with notes about Amara's preferences. Every word and sentence was full of his deep love for Amara.

I waited until noon the next day, but Mateo still didn't come back.

Just as I was about to call him, my phone rang suddenly.

It was a call from a friend.

"Do you know? I just saw big news. Mateo, the president of EchoGlobe, spent tens of millions at an auction to buy that rare masterpiece, saying he wants to give it to the woman he loves."

My heart skipped a beat.

My friend continued chattering non - stop, "Let me tell you, Mateo's presence was just overwhelming. He raised the bidding paddle without hesitation again and again until he finally got that piece. "

"Oh my god, he's willing to do this for you just after you got pregnant. If the baby is born, I can't even imagine how well he'll treat you! I also heard that Mateo personally traveled half - way around the world to collect rare flowers and invited the world - class banquet planning team to prepare a unique baby shower for you. He's so thoughtful!"

If it were before, I would also think that I was the happiest woman in the world. But now, I have completely understood that this love belongs to Amara.

At the same time, Amara posted something.

Finally, Mateo came home.

"Where's the necklace I gave you?" I questioned him.

Mateo's eyes flickered for a moment. "I accidentally lost it. I've sent people to look for it. If we can't find it, I'll give you a better gift later."

On the post Amara made, that necklace was hanging around her neck.

"Don't wait. I have my eye on a yacht. Buy it for me," I said.

"Okay!" Mateo signed his name on the paper I give him without hesitation.

I frowned. "Aren't you going to look at it carefully? What if... what if it's really expensive?"

"As long as you like it, I don't care how much it costs." His eyes were bright and sincere, showing no sign of pretense.

I couldn't help sighing inwardly.

The paper was a divorce agreement.

So, loving someone could make a person go to such lengths. It was a pity that the one being loved wasn't me.

Suddenly, the butler came in and whispered something in Mateo's ear.

His face instantly changed, and he pulled me into the car and rushed to the hospital.
