Chapter 1

I pushed the front door open. The house was entirely too quiet for a Tuesday afternoon.

I had cut my European business trip short by three days to surprise my husband, Killian, and our five-year-old son, Leo. I left my suitcase by the entryway console and slipped my shoes off.

A muffled sound drifted down the hallway.

Laughter. A low, soft moan.

I walked toward the master bedroom. The door stood ajar. I pushed the wood flat against the wall.

Killian was pinned to the mattress. Above him, riding him, was Blair. My best friend. The woman I had pulled out of bankruptcy two years ago.

"Killian," I said.

They scrambled. Blair shrieked, ripping the duvet off the bed to cover her bare chest. Killian lunged for his boxers on the floor.

"Elowen!" Killian’s face flushed dark red. "You're supposed to be in London."

"Clearly." I held my ground in the doorway.

Blair curled her knees to her chest. Tears instantly flooded her eyes. Her bottom lip trembled as she clutched the white linen.

"El," Blair whimpered. "Please, don't be mad at him. It's my fault. I was just in such a dark place, and he comforted me. We didn't mean for this to happen."

"You're naked in my bed, Blair. That requires quite a bit of meaning."

Killian stepped between us, his bare chest shielding her. "Back off, Elowen. Don't attack her."

"Attack her?" A bitter laugh escaped my throat. "I just walked in on my husband fucking my best friend."

"I tried to stop it," Blair cried out, burying her face in her hands. "I really did. But he was so sad, El. He missed having a real wife."

Pattering footsteps echoed in the hall.

"Mommy!"

My heart leaped. I turned, dropping to one knee with my arms wide open. "Leo, baby, Mommy's home early—"

Leo blew right past me.

He didn't even look at my outstretched arms. He ran straight to the bed, clutching a stuffed green dinosaur against his chest. He threw his arms around Blair’s waist.

"Mommy Blair, why are you crying?" Leo glared over his shoulder at me. "Did she yell at you again?"

The air left my lungs. My hands fell to my sides.

"Leo," I whispered. "What did you call her?"

"Go away!" Leo screamed. He pressed his face into Blair’s side. "I hate you! You're never here! You just care about your stupid airplanes and meetings. I want Blair. She plays with me."

Blair stroked his hair, shooting me a watery, helpless glance. "It's okay, sweetie. I'm right here. Don't be scared."

I stared at the three of them. A perfect, twisted family portrait.

"You taught him to say that," I said, looking at Killian.

Killian crossed his arms. He didn't even have the decency to look ashamed anymore.

"He figured it out himself, Elowen," Killian snapped. "What did you expect? You're gone three weeks out of every month. You chose your company over us. You abandoned this family."

"I pay the mortgage on this house. I pay for his private school."

"Money doesn't raise a child!" Killian yelled. "Blair stepped up. She was here when Leo had a fever last week. She cooks for us. She bought him that dinosaur. She's the mother he actually needs. And she's the wife I need."

"You're cold, Elowen," Blair added softly, wiping a tear from her cheek. "Look at you. You just caught us, and you're not even shedding a tear. This is exactly why he turned to me. You're a machine."

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. The shock morphed into a freezing, razor-sharp clarity.

I finally looked around the room. Really looked.

My vanity was cluttered with Blair's signature pink perfume bottles. The closet door hung open, revealing rows of her floral dresses pushed right up against Killian’s suits. My tailored coats were completely gone.

I walked over to the dresser.

"What are you doing?" Killian demanded.

I swiped aside a pile of Blair's cheap gold bangles. Underneath them sat my diamond wedding band. The one I left behind when I traveled so I wouldn't lose it.

They hadn't just slept together. They had moved her in. They had erased me.

I pulled my phone from my pocket. I opened the camera and hit record.

"August fourteenth," I said aloud, panning the lens across the vanity, the closet, the tangled sheets, and finally, the three of them huddled together. "Master bedroom. Killian and Blair."

"Hey!" Killian lunged forward. "Put that away! Are you crazy?"

I took a step back, keeping the camera steady. "Stay right there, Killian. The lighting is perfect."

Blair hid her face behind Leo. "Elowen, stop! You're scaring the boy!"

"You lost the right to use my son as a shield the second you spread your legs in my house," I said smoothly. I tapped the screen to snap a few high-resolution photos of her bare shoulders and Killian's half-dressed state.

"Give me the phone," Killian growled, taking another step.

"Touch me, and the police will be here in three minutes for assault. Followed by my lawyers." I lowered the device, slipping it back into my jacket pocket.

Killian froze. His jaw tightened. "You're overreacting. We can talk about this. For Leo's sake."

"There is nothing left to talk about."

"Ten years, El," Blair pleaded, her voice cracking. "We've been friends for ten years. Please don't throw that away."

"You threw it away," I told her. "Keep the ring. It suits a thief."

I turned on my heel and walked out of the bedroom.

"Elowen!" Killian shouted from the hallway. "If you walk out that door, don't bother coming back! We don't need you!"

I didn't stop. I grabbed my suitcase from the foyer and pulled the front door open.

The lock clicked shut behind me, severing my past completely.

I tossed my bag into the trunk of my car and climbed into the driver's seat. My hands gripped the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white. I stared at the front window of the house. The curtains twitched. Blair was watching me leave.

I pulled out my phone and dialed a number I hadn't called in five years.

"Mr. Gallagher," I said when the line connected.

"Elowen. It's been a while. To what do I owe the pleasure?"

"I need the best divorce shark in your firm. And I need you to draft the paperwork to liquidate the marketing agency I bought for Killian."

"Liquidate? Elowen, that will bankrupt him by Friday."

"I know," I said, starting the engine. "Make sure it happens by Thursday."

Chapter 2

"Drop the files on the table, Gallagher," I said.

My pre-marriage apartment smelled of dust and lemon polish. I hadn't lived in this penthouse for six years. I kept it as an investment property, never imagining it would become my war room.

Gallagher tossed a thick manila folder onto the glass coffee table. The heavy thud echoed in the empty living room.

"You're not going to like this, Elowen," he warned. He unbuttoned his suit jacket and took a seat on the leather sofa opposite me.

"I didn't hire you to make me happy. Tell me how much he stole."

Gallagher flipped the folder open, adjusting his glasses. "Over the last twelve months, Killian transferred roughly two point four million dollars into a private offshore trust."

"And the beneficiary?"

"Blair."

I stared at the black ink on the bank statements. A phantom weight pressed against my ribs.

"I paid off her student loans," I whispered, my voice sharp and hollow. "I pulled her out of bankruptcy two years ago. I handed Killian thirty percent of my family’s core equity so his board would take him seriously."

"They used your money to build a very comfortable life," Gallagher replied. He slid a stack of glossy photographs across the glass. "A luxury villa in the hills. Paid in full. A customized Porsche. Also paid in full. All registered under Blair's name."

I picked up the top photo. It showed Blair posing next to a white sports car, wearing a diamond necklace I had insured under my own name last year.

"Wait," I said, pointing to a property deed buried in the stack. "This address is in Denver. Blair doesn't go to Colorado."

"No, but her deadbeat younger brother does," Gallagher said. "She bought him a four-hundred-thousand-dollar townhouse. Fully paid, using the cash Killian wired her last November."

I dropped the paper back onto the table. "She secured a backup plan with my money."

"She's a parasite, Elowen. But that’s just the financial side." Gallagher reached into his briefcase and pulled out his laptop. "My investigator pulled this from Leo's preschool security cameras."

He hit the spacebar.

The screen brightened, showing the sunny courtyard of the kindergarten. Blair knelt in the grass, zipping up Leo’s jacket.

"Mommy Elowen is on another trip, baby," Blair’s voice crackled through the speakers. "She'd rather be with her money than with you."

"Mommy's always gone," Leo mumbled, looking at his shoes.

"I know, sweetie. She doesn't love you like I do. But I'll always be here."

Leo threw his arms around her neck. "I love you, Mommy Blair."

I slammed the laptop shut. The plastic cracked under the force of my hands.

"How long?" I demanded.

"Eight months," Gallagher answered quietly. "She signed up as the primary pickup contact in January. She’s been poisoning his mind every single afternoon."

"She brainwashed my son."

"She alienated him," Gallagher corrected. "It's a calculated move to secure custody for Killian."

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

I pulled it out. A new message from Blair lit up the lock screen.

"Speak of the devil," I muttered.

"What does it say?"

I opened the chat. "She’s playing the victim. Listen to this. *El, I am so incredibly sorry. I never meant to hurt you. I was just trying to help Leo, and Killian and I fell in love. Please forgive us.*"

"Do not reply," Gallagher instructed.

"I'm not finished." I tapped the image she attached. "She sent a picture of a handwritten letter. It's from Killian. He promises to finalize our divorce and marry her by Christmas."

Gallagher scoffed. "She's provoking you. Trying to make you act irrationally."

"There's more." Another text popped up on the screen. My stomach twisted as I read the words aloud. "*We think it’s best if Leo takes Killian’s mother’s maiden name. Or mine. He needs a fresh start, El. He needs a mother who is actually around.*"

I tossed the phone onto the table. The screen stayed lit, displaying her vile words.

"Look at the edge of the photo," I said, pointing at the screen. "She's wearing my silk robe. The one I bought in Milan."

"She wants you to lose your temper," Gallagher said. "She wants you to show up at the house and scream so Killian can record it and call you unstable."

"I won't give them the satisfaction." I looked at the lawyer. "Where is your investigator, Gallagher?"

"Waiting in the hall."

"Bring him in."

Gallagher stood, walking to the front door. He opened it, ushering in a tall man in a gray suit.

"Elowen, this is Miller. Best private detective in the state."

"Have a seat, Miller," I said, pulling a pen from my bag. "I want everything."

Miller sat next to Gallagher. "Define everything, ma'am."

"Every hotel receipt. Every flight they took together. I want the surveillance footage from the school downloaded and certified. And I want Killian’s commercial gray operations exposed."

Miller raised an eyebrow. "Gray operations?"

"He took kickbacks from suppliers in Dubai last year," I explained, signing the bottom of Miller's retainer agreement. "He uses a holding company called Apex Solutions. It's registered in the Caymans. Start there. He funneled three million dollars through it to avoid taxes. I have the account numbers memorized."

Miller wrote the name down in a small notepad. "You have a photographic memory for his crimes?"

"I have a photographic memory for my money." I pushed the signed contract toward him. "Find the paper trail. Burn his empire to the ground."

Miller grabbed the paper and stood up. "I'll have the preliminary files by tomorrow morning."

He walked out, leaving Gallagher and me in the quiet apartment.

"You're playing a dangerous game, Elowen," Gallagher said, packing up his briefcase. "If you corner him, Killian will lash out."

"Let him."

Right on cue, my phone rang.

Killian’s name flashed across the screen.

I answered, putting him on speaker.

"Elowen!" he roared. The background noise sounded like a busy street. "My credit cards just declined at the jewelry store! What did you do to the joint accounts?"

"I liquidated the marketing agency, Killian. Just like I promised."

"You psychotic bitch!" he screamed. "I was buying Blair an engagement ring!"

"Use the cash you stole from my family's equity, Killian."

"That money belongs to us! I earned it by putting up with your cold, corporate attitude for ten years!"

"You earned nothing. You lived off my charity."

"You think you can ruin me?" Killian snarled, his tone venomous. "I just got off the phone with my lawyer. I filed an emergency injunction."

"For what?"

"I'm taking full custody of Leo. You will never see our son again."

The line went dead.

Chapter 3

"Sign it, Elowen," Killian said.

He slid the thirty-page document across the mahogany table. The thick stack of paper stopped right at my fingertips.

I scanned the bold print on the first page. *Marital Settlement Agreement.*

"You want the house," I said, keeping my voice small.

"I need the house," Killian corrected. He leaned back in his leather chair, adjusting his expensive tie. "Leo needs stability. You’re never there anyway. It makes sense for Blair and me to keep the primary residence."

"And the company equity?" I asked.

"All of it stays with me." He crossed his arms over his chest. "You don't get to walk away with the empire I built."

I bit the inside of my cheek to stop myself from laughing. He built nothing. I bought that agency for him. I funded his initial payroll.

"What about Leo?" I asked.

"Full physical and legal custody goes to me," Killian stated. He didn't even blink. "You get one weekend a month. Supervised."

"Supervised?" I forced my voice to tremble. I let my shoulders slump, shrinking into the chair. "Killian, please. He's my baby."

"He calls Blair 'Mommy' now. You heard him."

I squeezed my eyes shut, pushing a single, pathetic tear down my cheek. "You're leaving me with nothing. Just a ten-thousand-dollar payout."

"Consider it severance," he sneered. "You should be grateful I’m not suing you for emotional damages. You were a terrible wife, El. Cold. Distant. I’m just taking what I deserve."

I buried my face in my hands. I let out a loud, broken sob.

Through my fingers, I watched his posture relax. His chest puffed out. The arrogant fool bought every second of my performance. He truly believed he had broken me.

"I can't fight you," I whispered. I dropped my hands and stared at the wood grain on the table. "I don't have the energy anymore. You win, Killian."

"Good." He tapped a gold pen against the document. "Have your lawyer review it. But don't try to change a single clause. If you do, I'll make sure you never see Leo again."

"I won't," I choked out. "Just... take care of him."

Killian stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. "Blair already is."

He walked out of the conference room without looking back.

The second the door clicked shut, my tears stopped. I wiped my cheek with the back of my hand. My sadness evaporated, replaced by a freezing, sharp focus.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Gallagher.

"He took the bait," I said. "He thinks I'm defeated."

"Perfect," Gallagher replied. "That means they’ll let their guard down."

"They already are."

Three days later, I sat in the back of an unmarked sedan across from the Apex Solutions corporate building. Rain battered the windshield.

Miller sat in the driver's seat, monitoring a laptop screen.

"Your replacement is making quite the impression," Miller said. He pointed at the monitor.

He tapped a key, playing a recorded security feed from Killian’s executive suite.

Blair sat in Killian’s oversized chair, her feet propped on the glass desk. She wore a bright red designer dress. My designer dress. The one I bought in Paris last spring.

An older woman stood across from her, clutching a tablet. It was Margaret, the head of finance. I hired her seven years ago.

"I don't care about the quarterly projections, Margaret," Blair snapped through the audio feed. "I want my new office renovated by Monday."

"Ms. Blair, the budget doesn't allow for a fifty-thousand-dollar remodel right now," Margaret explained. "We have vendor payments due."

Blair slammed her hand on the desk. "Do you know who I am? I am the future Mrs. Killian. You work for me now. Pack your desk. You're fired."

Margaret stared in shock. "You can't do that."

Killian walked into the frame. He wrapped his arms around Blair’s shoulders from behind.

"Killian," Margaret pleaded. "Tell her."

"You heard my fiancée, Margaret," Killian said, kissing Blair’s cheek. "Security will escort you out."

I watched the screen fade to black.

"She fired three senior directors this week," Miller noted. He shut the laptop. "She's treating the corporation like her personal piggy bank. She even ordered the IT department to upgrade her personal phone on the company dime."

"And Killian is letting her," I said.

"He's completely blinded," Miller agreed. "He thinks he's invincible now that you've surrendered."

"It gets worse." Miller handed me a tablet. "Check the society blogs. From the Plaza Gala last night."

I swiped the screen. A video played.

Blair stood in front of a step-and-repeat banner, holding a champagne flute. She wore a diamond necklace. My diamond necklace. She leaned into a microphone held by a local reporter.

"It’s been so hard on little Leo," Blair said, pouting her lips. "Elowen just walked out on him. She only cared about her bank accounts. She never even hugged the poor boy. But I’m here now. I’m picking up the pieces."

The reporter gasped. "How tragic. And she really left him?"

"Completely abandoned him," Blair lied effortlessly. "But Killian and I are providing a loving home. True love always wins."

I handed the tablet back to Miller. My expression remained entirely neutral.

"She’s digging her own grave," I murmured. "Did you get into his laptop?"

Miller grinned. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a silver flash drive.

"He didn't even lock his office door while they were at the gala," Miller said. "Left the computer wide open on his desk. No passwords. No encryption. I walked right in wearing a janitor's uniform."

I took the drive. The metal felt heavy in my palm. "What's on it?"

"Everything," Miller replied. "Seven years of offshore wire transfers. The forged financing contracts for the Dubai suppliers. Tax evasion records."

"And the personal files?"

"Hundreds of photos and hotel receipts. Proving the affair started nearly two years ago. Long before you filed for divorce."

"Two years," I repeated.

My best friend. My husband. Two years of smiles, shared dinners, and lies. They had plotted this takeover right in front of my face.

"You have enough to put him in federal prison, Elowen," Miller said quietly. "And enough to leave her with absolutely nothing."

I gripped the flash drive tight enough to leave a red mark on my skin.

"Gallagher has the divorce papers ready," I said. "Killian thinks we’re signing his version tomorrow morning at the firm."

"Are you going to confront them?"

"I'm going to destroy them."

I looked out the window. The rain washed the city streets clean.

"Drive me to Gallagher's office," I ordered. "We need to prepare the final filings."

Miller shifted the car into gear. We pulled away from the curb.

My phone buzzed in my purse. I pulled it out.

A message from Killian lit up the screen.

*Bring the signed papers tomorrow at 9 AM. Don't be late. Leo is calling Blair 'Mom' now. It's for the best.*

I stared at the text. A slow, cold smile crept onto my face.

I typed my reply.

*I'll be there. I have a surprise for you both.*

I hit send and turned my phone off.

Tomorrow, the charade would end. Tomorrow, Killian would learn exactly what happens when you try to steal from a woman who built the vault.

I slipped the flash drive into my pocket.

But as we approached the intersection, a black SUV suddenly swerved into our lane, cutting us off completely.

Miller slammed on the brakes. The tires screeched against the wet pavement.

"What the hell?" Miller shouted.

Four men in dark suits stepped out of the SUV. They walked straight toward my window.
