Chapter 1

I stared at the silver envelope on my small wooden desk, my fingers trembling as I traced the elegant cursive of my name. Today was my twenty-fourth birthday, and this was the only card I'd received. Three years ago, birthdays meant pancakes with extra blueberries and Alex's warm arms wrapped around me as we watched the sunrise from our little cottage porch. Now, they were just another day of scrubbing floors and avoiding Victoria's cruel gaze.

Something about the envelope felt wrong. The Sterling family crest pressed into the wax seal seemed to mock me. I broke it open, expecting perhaps a formal acknowledgment from Alexander—something cold but proper.

What fell out stole the breath from my lungs.

Photographs. Glossy, professional shots of Alexander and Victoria in ceremonial white robes, standing beneath an arch of moonflowers—my moonflowers, the ones I'd cultivated for years. His hands on her waist. Her triumphant smile. The sacred marking ritual captured in high definition.

"No," I whispered, my voice cracking as I flipped through image after image. "No, no, no..."

Then I saw it—a check. Eight million dollars made out to me, with Luna Sterling's elegant signature. A small note card accompanied it: "Leave the Sterling territory. Never return. This is your only warning."

My legs gave out, and I sank to the floor of my tiny Omega quarters, clutching the evidence of my mate's ultimate betrayal to my chest. The mate bond between us twisted painfully, as if someone had driven a knife through it. I'd known Alexander was courting Victoria publicly—a political match, he'd said—but I'd clung to the desperate belief that our sacred bond meant something. That somewhere inside the cold Alpha was still my Alex, the man who'd marked me under the full moon and promised me forever.

I was still sitting there, tears dried on my cheeks, when the door opened without a knock. Luna Sterling stood in the doorway, her silver-streaked hair pulled into a severe bun, her eyes assessing me like I was a particularly disappointing piece of furniture.

"I see you received my gift," she said, her voice as crisp as autumn leaves. "Eight million is generous. More than generous for someone of your... status."

I rose slowly to my feet, still clutching the photos. "This isn't a gift. It's a bribe."

"Call it what you will." She stepped into the room, her expensive perfume overwhelming the small space. "My son has made his choice. Victoria will be his Luna. Your presence here is an embarrassment to everyone, Isabella. Take the money. Start a new life far from here. Or don't take it—but leave regardless."

"And if I refuse?" I asked, surprising myself with the steadiness in my voice.

Luna Sterling's perfectly painted lips curved into something too cold to be called a smile. "Then what has happened to you so far will seem like kindness."

I straightened my spine, feeling something harden inside me. "I won't be threatened. I won't be bought. Alexander marked me as his mate. That bond—"

"Means nothing compared to pack politics," she interrupted. "You're wolfless. An Omega. You have no place beside an Alpha."

She turned to leave, then paused at the door. "Consider the offer. It expires at midnight."

That evening, I was assigned to serve at the formal pack dinner. My birthday dinner, though no one acknowledged it. I moved silently between tables, refilling wine glasses, my eyes burning with unshed tears every time I caught sight of Alexander at the head table, Victoria draped possessively across his arm.

I was refilling a glass near their table when Victoria suddenly jerked her arm, sending her crystal wineglass shattering across the floor. Shards sliced into my hand as I immediately knelt to clean up the mess.

"Clumsy Omega," Victoria sneered, loud enough for nearby tables to hear. "Don't you recognize your own sister?"

My head snapped up, blood dripping from my palm onto the white tablecloth. "What?"

"Victoria," a sharp female voice cautioned from across the table.

I looked up to see an elegant woman with Victoria's same amber eyes—eyes I'd seen in my own reflection for twenty-four years. My mother. Luna Ashford. The woman who had cast me out thirteen years ago for being wolfless.

"Mother?" I whispered, the word foreign on my tongue.

She looked straight through me, as if I were nothing but air, and turned to speak to Alexander.

In that moment, kneeling on the floor with blood and wine seeping into my uniform, the full weight of my abandonment crashed over me. Not just by Alexander, but by my own flesh and blood—twice over.

Chapter 2

The morning after my birthday, I found myself carrying a stack of fresh linens toward the east wing of the Sterling Pack House. My arms still ached from yesterday's humiliation, and the revelation about Victoria being my sister had left me hollow inside. Eight million dollars to disappear. My own mother looking through me like I was nothing but air. These thoughts circled in my mind as I approached Alexander's private chambers.

I hesitated at the ornate double doors. Omegas weren't permitted in the Alpha's quarters without explicit permission, but the Beta had ordered these linens delivered before noon. Taking a deep breath, I balanced the stack against my hip and knocked softly.

No answer.

After waiting a respectful moment, I used my keycard—one of the few privileges I still maintained as a servant—and slipped inside. The room was immaculate, as always. Sunlight streamed through floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the massive four-poster bed with its crimson sheets. I moved to place the linens on the dresser when a scent stopped me cold.

Floral. Intoxicating. Victoria's perfume.

It wasn't faint either—it permeated the air, clinging to the sheets, the pillows, the very walls themselves. My hands trembled as I set down the stack, my eyes drawn to the rumpled bed. Against the deep red pillowcase, several long blonde hairs caught the sunlight like golden threads.

My stomach lurched. I'd known, of course. The photos made it clear. But seeing the evidence so intimately displayed in the space that should have been ours...

I reached out, fingers hovering over one of the strands, when the bathroom door swung open.

Alexander stood in the doorway, a towel wrapped around his waist, water droplets still clinging to his broad chest. For a moment—just a heartbeat—I saw a flash of the man I'd fallen in love with. The soft eyes that had looked at me with such tenderness in our little cottage by the sea.

But it vanished instantly, replaced by the cold, hard stare of Alpha Sterling.

"What are you doing here?" His voice dropped to that low, commanding tone—the Alpha voice that made wolves cower and submit.

"I—I was delivering fresh linens," I managed, clutching the edge of the dresser for support. "Beta Ronan asked me to—"

"You have no right to be in my private chambers." Each word fell like ice between us. "Return to the Omega wing immediately."

The mate bond between us twisted painfully, sensing the proximity yet feeling the emotional chasm. I wanted to scream, to remind him of what we'd been, of the mark he'd left on my neck that bound us eternally.

Instead, I lowered my eyes. "Yes, Alpha."

I moved toward the door, but paused, unable to stop myself. "Her scent is everywhere," I whispered.

His jaw tightened, that muscle in his cheek jumping—the tell he'd had since I'd known him. "That's none of your concern."

"I'm your mate," I said, the words burning my throat.

"You're an Omega," he corrected coldly. "And she will be my Luna."

I fled before he could see my tears.

---

Three days later, the seasonal pack gathering filled the great hall with laughter and conversation. I moved between tables with a tray of coffee mugs, keeping my eyes down, trying to be invisible. The revelation about Victoria being my sister had spread through the pack like wildfire, adding a new layer of humiliation to my already precarious position.

I approached the head table where Alexander sat with the pack elders, Victoria at his right hand, her fingers possessively intertwined with his. My mother sat across from them, still refusing to acknowledge my existence.

"Coffee, Alpha?" I asked softly, offering the tray.

Alexander barely glanced at me, giving a curt nod. I carefully placed a mug before him, then moved to serve Victoria.

"Oh, Isabella," Victoria purred, her amber eyes—so like my own—glittering with malice. "How thoughtful."

As I extended the tray, Victoria's arm jerked suddenly. The mug of scalding coffee tipped, its contents pouring directly onto my exposed forearm. White-hot pain seared through my skin as the liquid burned into my flesh.

I bit back a scream, the tray clattering to the floor as coffee splashed across the polished wood. Several nearby pack members laughed, watching the clumsy Omega's mishap with amusement.

"Oh dear," Victoria gasped with theatrical concern. "How terribly clumsy of you."

The pain was blinding. I clutched my arm, feeling blisters already forming on the angry red skin. Through the haze of agony, I felt something stir in the mate bond—concern, alarm.

For one desperate moment, I thought Alexander would help me. That he would see through Victoria's act.

But then I heard his voice, not spoken aloud but through the mind-link he shared with her: "Did you burn yourself, my Luna?"

His concern was for her. Not me. Never me.

I stumbled backward, cradling my injured arm, as Victoria smiled sweetly up at him. "I'm fine, my love. Though we might need a new server. This one seems rather... accident-prone."

More laughter rippled through the crowd as I retreated, my vision blurring with unshed tears. The burn on my arm throbbed in time with my heartbeat, but it was nothing compared to the searing pain of the truth I could no longer deny.

Alexander wasn't just playing a role. He wasn't secretly protecting me while maintaining pack appearances.

He had truly, completely abandoned me.

Chapter 3

I woke to the sound of shouting and heavy footsteps thundering down the hallway of the Omega quarters. My arm still throbbed from Victoria's 'accident' with the scalding coffee three days ago, the blisters having barely begun to heal. The burn seemed like a cruel metaphor for my life—raw, exposed, and treated with indifference by everyone around me.

The door to my tiny room burst open without warning. Beta Ronan stood in the doorway, his massive frame blocking the light from the hallway, two Delta guards flanking him with stern expressions.

"Omega Isabella Hayes," he announced, his voice carrying that official tone that made my stomach clench. "You're summoned to the council chamber immediately."

"What's happening?" I asked, pulling my thin robe tighter around my nightgown.

Ronan's eyes narrowed. "The Alpha's sacred moonstone artifacts are missing. A routine search has been ordered for all Omega quarters."

My blood ran cold. The moonstone artifacts were ancient relics passed down through generations of Sterling Alphas. They were said to hold the pack's collective power, symbols of the Alpha's divine right to rule.

"Search all you want," I said, stepping aside. "You won't find anything here."

The Deltas tore through my few possessions without ceremony—upending my mattress, emptying my small dresser, scattering my clothes across the floor. I watched in stunned silence, the mate bond in my chest twisting with anxiety. Something was very wrong.

Then one of the guards straightened, holding up a small velvet pouch with trembling hands. "Beta Ronan," he said, his voice hushed with reverence and horror. "The moonstones."

"That's impossible," I whispered, staring at the pouch. "I've never seen those before in my life."

Beta Ronan's expression hardened. "Seize her."

Rough hands grabbed my arms, twisting them behind my back. The guard holding my burned arm squeezed deliberately, making me cry out as pain lanced through the raw skin.

"I didn't take them!" I protested as they dragged me from the room. "This is a mistake—someone planted those!"

But my words fell on deaf ears.

---

The council chamber was packed when they brought me in. Word had spread quickly through the pack, and dozens of eyes watched with barely concealed disdain as the guards forced me to my knees before the raised dais where the pack leadership sat.

Alexander occupied the center seat, his face a cold mask of authority. Victoria sat beside him, her lips curved in a smile that didn't reach her eyes. My mother—Luna Ashford—was there too, her gaze sliding over me as if I were nothing but an unpleasant stain on the floor.

"Isabella Hayes," Beta Ronan's voice echoed through the chamber as he stood to address the gathering. "You stand accused of stealing the sacred moonstone artifacts of the Sterling Pack—a crime punishable by exile or death."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd. I struggled to my feet, ignoring the guard who tried to force me back down.

"I didn't steal anything," I said, my voice stronger than I felt. "Those stones were planted in my room. Anyone could have done it."

"And why," Victoria asked sweetly, leaning forward, "would anyone want to frame a worthless Omega?"

I met her gaze directly. "You tell me, sister."

Gasps echoed through the room. Victoria's face flushed with anger.

"Enough," Alexander commanded, his Alpha tone reverberating through the chamber. Everyone fell silent immediately. He turned his cold eyes to me. "The evidence is clear. The sacred moonstones were found in your possession."

"Alexander," I pleaded, reaching for our bond, trying to make him feel my sincerity. "You know me. You know I wouldn't—"

"Alpha Sterling," he corrected sharply. "And I know only what the evidence tells me."

He rose to his feet, towering over the assembly. "For the crime of theft against the Alpha and the pack, I sentence you to public flogging. Twenty lashes."

The room spun around me. Twenty lashes could kill a human—and without my wolf, I was dangerously close to human in my physical resilience.

"Additionally," Alexander continued, his voice devoid of emotion, "to ensure the lesson is properly learned, Healer Elias will administer wolfsbane."

A collective intake of breath swept through the room. Wolfsbane was toxic to our kind—especially to someone wolfless like me. In small doses, it caused excruciating pain. In larger ones, it could be fatal.

I looked up at Alexander, searching his face for any sign of the man who had once held me through nightmares, who had whispered promises against my skin under the light of the moon. There was nothing there but the cold, implacable mask of an Alpha protecting his pack.

"Take her to the cells," he ordered. "The sentence will be carried out at dawn."

As the guards dragged me away, I caught Victoria's triumphant smile and the subtle nod she exchanged with my mother. In that moment, I knew with absolute certainty—this was no random act of cruelty. This was a carefully orchestrated plan to destroy me completely.

And Alexander, my mate, my once-beloved, had just become their willing executioner.
