Chapter 1

The night air carried the scent of pine and something else—something wrong. I paused at the edge of Moonstone Pack territory, my hand clutching the ceremonial silver pendant I would present to Leo tomorrow. Our mate ceremony was less than twelve hours away, but doubt gnawed at me like a persistent wolf.

"Leo?" I called softly, scanning the shadowed tree line. "Are you there?"

He had asked to meet me here, away from prying eyes and wagging tongues. A private moment before we would be bound forever before the pack. But the silence that greeted me felt heavy, ominous.

My wolf, Lily, stirred uneasily within me. *Something's wrong. We shouldn't be here.*

I ignored her warning, taking another step forward. The pendant in my palm seemed to grow heavier with each passing second. "Leo?" I called again, louder this time.

A twig snapped behind me. I whirled around, relief flooding through me—only to freeze as three massive rogues emerged from the darkness, their eyes gleaming with malice, their lips curled back to reveal yellowed fangs.

"Well, well," the largest one growled, his voice like gravel. "Look what we have here. A little she-wolf, all alone on the edge of her territory."

My heart hammered against my ribs as I backed away slowly. "I'm not alone," I lied, my eyes darting frantically around the clearing. "My mate is—"

"Running away," the rogue sneered, pointing behind me.

I turned just in time to see Leo's retreating form disappearing into the trees, his shoulders hunched, not once looking back.

"Leo!" I screamed, disbelief and betrayal slicing through me like a knife. "LEO!"

The rogues laughed, a cruel, guttural sound that sent ice through my veins. "Looks like your mate ceremony is canceled, sweetheart," the leader taunted, advancing slowly.

Lily howled in anguish within me, not just from the danger but from the soul-deep betrayal. The pendant slipped from my trembling fingers, landing in the dirt with a soft thud.

The rogues circled me, their movements predatory and coordinated. I backed up until my spine pressed against the rough bark of a pine tree. There was nowhere left to run.

"The pack will know if you hurt me," I warned, my voice steadier than I felt. "Alpha Kincaid will—"

"Will what?" the leader snarled, drawing a silver blade that glinted in the moonlight. "We'll be long gone before anyone finds what's left of you."

I closed my eyes, bracing for the attack, when a deafening roar split the night. My eyes flew open as a massive black wolf burst into the clearing, his Alpha aura crackling with such intensity that the air itself seemed to vibrate.

The rogues hesitated, momentarily stunned by the newcomer's raw power. It was all the advantage he needed. The black wolf lunged, his movements a blur of lethal precision. Two rogues fell back, but the leader stood his ground, slashing wildly with his silver blade.

"Nathan!" I gasped, recognizing the Alpha's distinctive midnight fur.

The fight was brutal and swift. Nathan's jaws closed around the rogue's throat, but not before the silver blade came down in a vicious arc, slicing through fur, flesh, and bone. Nathan's agonized howl pierced the night as his right paw—his hand in human form—was severed clean off.

Blood sprayed across my face and chest as I rushed forward without thinking. The remaining rogues fled into the darkness as Nathan collapsed, shifting back to human form, his severed wrist pumping crimson onto the forest floor.

"Alpha!" I cried, dropping to my knees beside him. "Hold on!"

His eyes, clouded with pain, found mine. "Aria," he gasped, his good hand reaching for me, smearing blood across my cheek. "You're safe now."

Something electric passed between us as our blood mingled—his from the wound, mine from a cut I hadn't noticed on my palm. A warmth spread through my chest, unfamiliar yet undeniable.

Lily whimpered in confusion. *What is this feeling?*

I didn't know, but as I pressed my shirt against Nathan's wound, desperately trying to stem the bleeding, I felt a connection forming—a bond born of blood and sacrifice that would change everything.

Behind us, forgotten in the dirt, lay the mate pendant meant for a coward who had fled without a backward glance.

Chapter 2

The kitchen was a flurry of activity as I balanced three trays of appetizers, weaving between pack members who didn't bother to step aside. My arms ached from hours of preparation for this gathering—a celebration of Alpha Nathan's 'miraculous recovery' from his silver-inflicted wound. The wound he'd taken for me.

"Careful with those, Luna," Healer Maeve cautioned as I nearly stumbled. The title still felt foreign on my ears. Luna. Nathan's mate. The position I'd accepted out of gratitude and the strange pull I'd felt that night in the forest.

"Sorry," I murmured, steadying myself. "Just a little tired."

Maeve's eyes softened with something that looked suspiciously like pity. "You've been working double shifts for weeks now. The rehabilitation treatments are expensive, but—"

"I don't mind," I cut her off, forcing a smile. "It's the least I can do after what he sacrificed for me."

She pressed her lips together but said nothing more as I pushed through the swinging doors into the main hall. The room sparkled with decorations, pack members in their finest attire mingling beneath crystal chandeliers. I scanned the crowd for Nathan, but couldn't spot his tall frame anywhere.

Lily stirred restlessly within me. *Something feels wrong tonight.*

I silenced her concerns as I had been doing more frequently these days. Nathan was busy with Alpha duties. The mate bond we shared was still new, still forming. His distance was natural, temporary.

After setting down the trays, I slipped back toward the kitchen for the next course. A flash of movement in the far corridor caught my eye—Nathan's broad shoulders disappearing around a corner. Without thinking, I followed, my footsteps silent on the plush carpet.

The corridor led to a small antechamber used for private pack business. I hesitated at the partially open door, then froze as I heard Victoria Sterling's unmistakable voice.

"You're pathetic, kneeling there like a common wolf," she hissed, her tone dripping with contempt.

Curiosity pulled me forward. I crept closer, slipping behind a row of sugar barrels stored in the hallway. Through the crack in the door, I could see Nathan—my mate, my Alpha—on his knees before Victoria.

"Please," he begged, his voice stripped of all Alpha authority. "I've done everything you asked. I took the silver blade. I bound myself to her. I've proven my devotion to you."

My heart stuttered in my chest. Lily whimpered, a low, pained sound that echoed through my mind.

"Your heart has always been mine, not hers," Victoria's voice slithered through the mind-link, so strong I could hear it clearly despite not being part of their connection. "But you're still not worthy. Not yet."

Nathan's head bowed lower. "Tell me what more I can do. The pack respects me now because of my 'sacrifice.' Aria works day and night to pay for treatments I don't even need."

A cold numbness spread through my limbs. The sugar barrel before me blurred as tears filled my eyes.

"Make her suffer," Victoria commanded, her voice like silk over steel. "Humiliate her. Break her. Show me that your loyalty lies only with me."

"Anything," Nathan promised, his voice fervent. "Anything for you."

Lily howled in anguish within me, the sound reverberating through every cell in my body. *He never accepted us. Never wanted us. It was all a lie.*

I pressed my fist against my mouth to stifle a sob. The mate bond I'd cherished, the connection I'd felt that night—had it all been fabricated? A cruel manipulation?

I stumbled backward, knocking against the sugar barrels. They wobbled precariously but didn't fall. Heart racing, I fled down the corridor, slipping back into the kitchen just as the doors to the antechamber opened.

"Aria?" Maeve called, frowning at my tear-streaked face. "What happened?"

I shook my head, unable to form words around the lump in my throat. How could I explain that the mate I'd given everything for—my devotion, my trust, my future—had never truly accepted me? That our entire bond was built on deception?

Shame burned through me, hot and suffocating. I should have known. Should have listened to Lily's doubts. Instead, I'd silenced her, desperate to believe in the mate bond I thought we shared.

"Nothing," I finally managed, wiping my eyes with trembling hands. "I'm fine."

But as Nathan and Victoria emerged from the corridor, his hand briefly brushing against hers when they thought no one was looking, I knew with devastating certainty that nothing would ever be fine again.

Chapter 3

The crisp autumn air filled my lungs as I crouched in the tall grass, my bow drawn taut against my shoulder. The Moon Hunt—a sacred pack tradition where members proved their hunting prowess—had begun at dusk. My heart hammered against my ribs, not from excitement but from dread. Victoria's words still echoed in my ears.

"Luna Aria will pursue the swift fox," she had announced with a honeyed smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Surely our Luna can demonstrate her... skills."

The swift fox—the most elusive prey in our territory. Even seasoned hunters rarely caught one. I'd seen the knowing glances exchanged among the pack members, the barely concealed smirks. This wasn't a challenge; it was a setup.

Lily whimpered within me. *We can't catch it. She knows we can't.*

I silenced her doubts, focusing instead on the rustling in the underbrush fifty yards ahead. A flash of silver-gray fur darted between the trees—too fast, impossibly fast. I released my arrow, knowing even as it left my bow that it would miss.

The shaft buried itself in a tree trunk as the fox disappeared into the darkness.

"Such a pity," Victoria's voice sliced through the quiet forest. She emerged from the shadows, flanked by her friends, her eyes glittering with malice. "Everyone else has made their kills. Even the juveniles."

Humiliation burned through me as other pack members materialized from the trees, their successful hunts hanging from their belts. Nathan stood among them, his expression carefully blank.

"Perhaps," Victoria continued, her voice carrying to all present, "our Luna should forfeit her share of tonight's feast. After all, those who don't contribute shouldn't partake."

I looked to Nathan, waiting for him to defend me—his mate, his Luna. His eyes met mine for a brief moment before sliding away. Then, almost imperceptibly, he nodded his agreement.

Lily retreated deep within me, confused and hurt. *Why doesn't he protect us?*

I had no answer as I walked back to the pack grounds alone, my stomach hollow with hunger and betrayal.

---

Three days later, I found myself rummaging through my meager possessions, searching for something—anything—that might lift my spirits. My fingers brushed against soft fabric tucked beneath my folded tunics. The red scarf.

I pulled it out, running my fingers over the worn material. Nathan had tied it around my neck the day after he'd saved me from the rogues, before I knew the truth. "Red suits you," he'd said, his fingers lingering against my skin. It was the only gift he'd ever given me.

Despite everything, I couldn't bring myself to throw it away. It represented a moment I'd believed was real—before I'd overheard him with Victoria, before the humiliations began.

I wrapped it around my neck, drawing comfort from its warmth as I made my way to the mid-moon meeting in the central clearing. Pack members parted before me, their expressions ranging from pity to contempt. I kept my head high, the scarf a small rebellion against the shame they tried to heap upon me.

Victoria's sharp intake of breath cut through the murmur of conversation. Her eyes fixed on the red fabric around my neck, narrowing dangerously.

"What a lovely accessory," she said, her voice carrying across the clearing. "May I?"

Before I could react, she was beside me, her fingers closing around the scarf. With a swift yank, she pulled it from my neck.

"Victoria," I protested, reaching for it. "Please—"

"Such a tattered old thing," she sneered, holding it up for all to see. "Hardly befitting a Luna, don't you think, Nathan?"

Nathan stood nearby, his expression unreadable. "It's just a scarf," he said flatly.

Victoria's smile was triumphant as she approached the central fire pit. "Then you won't mind if I dispose of it properly."

With theatrical flourish, she dropped the scarf into the flames. The red fabric blackened and curled, consumed by fire as pack members watched in silence.

I felt something break inside me as the last thread turned to ash. Lily howled in anguish, but Nathan's wolf remained unnaturally silent—no growl of protest, no defense of his mate's dignity.

*He's not ours,* Lily whimpered. *He never was.*

---

Two weeks later, I sat on the cold tile of the pack bathroom, staring at the small testing stone in my palm. It had turned a deep, unmistakable blue. Pregnant. I was carrying Nathan's pup.

Despite everything—the betrayal, the humiliation, the pain—joy bloomed in my chest. A pup. My pup.

*Our pup,* Lily whispered, her presence warming for the first time in weeks. *Something truly ours.*

I pressed my hand against my still-flat stomach, a smile spreading across my face. Perhaps this would change everything. Perhaps Nathan would see me—truly see me—when he learned he was to be a father.

With renewed purpose, I spent my last coins at the market, purchasing wild berries and chestnuts—Nathan's favorites. I would prepare a special dinner, just the two of us, and share the news.

As I arranged the berries on a plate, humming softly to myself, I allowed hope to flicker to life once more. This pup would be our new beginning. It had to be.

Little did I know that as I planned our celebration, Victoria was already whispering in Nathan's ear, planting seeds of destruction that would soon bear the bitterest fruit.
