Chapter 3

"I'm going to the restroom," Diana's voice snapped me back to reality once more.

Her beautiful face showed a strange smile as she looked at me and continued, "I only need Laura with me."

As soon as she finished speaking, Mom anxiously replied, "Will you be fine? She's useless! What if she doesn't have enough strength to carry or move anything? It could get dangerous!"

How ridiculous. Mom probably never realized just how bold Diana actually was.

Diana had learned how to smoke when she was still in school. When Mom found a pack of cigarettes in her bag, Diana just pinned the blame on me instead, causing Mom to beat me up for three days straight.

Jorge also stepped forward, looking concerned. "Diana, are you sure you don't need us to go with you? Will you be okay?"

I bit down on my lips so hard that I could taste blood in my mouth.

I had always treated Mom and Jorge well—too well. The house Mom was now living in was paid for in full, bought with the money I had saved up through endless overtime work.

Ever since I graduated, I would buy Mom whatever she wanted without any questions.

Before I got pregnant, Jorge did not work and just lived off of me as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

But after I became pregnant, he went and found a job overnight, as if taking care of me for even a single day was even more unbearable than having to work.

And the only thing I had gotten in return was disdainful looks and insults.

"Don't worry, Mom. I just want to talk to Laura alone," Diana explained before grabbing my hand and pulling me toward the restroom.

Her tone shifted completely the moment we stepped inside. "Ugh, why do you look so old, Laura? You're only in your 20s, but you look like some wrinkled old woman in her 40s or 50s. You're so disgusting."

I forced a smile and replied, "You look so much younger now, Diana. Henry must've treated you well."

Diana's expression darkened instantly as she leaned in close to my face. "Henry still thinks that I'm you! Do you have any idea how disgusting it is having to listen to him call me by your name? He's mine! So why is he still calling your name?"

I lowered my gaze. My voice turned cold as I said, "Back then, you were the one who suggested to Mom that she drug me unconscious so you could take my place in marrying Henry, weren't you?"

Diana froze up for a second before gripping my wrist violently. "So what if you know about the truth? Henry loves me, not an ugly woman like you!

"I'll get straight to the point. My son's kidney is failing, and your daughter's kidney is a perfect match for him!

"Will you believe me when I say that I only need to say the word, and Mom will immediately hand Cecily's kidney to me without questions?"

I yanked my hand away immediately. I could not believe that she dared even to utter such words.

I did not mind being humiliated. But now, she was making a move on Cecily of all people!

However, before I could even steady myself, Diana suddenly slammed her hand against the door and screamed. "Mom! Laura hit me!"

Mom and Jorge had been waiting anxiously outside of the restroom. When they heard Diana scream, Mom's face turned pale from fright as she rushed in to help.

Diana held out her hand, crying. "Laura did it! Look, my hand is bleeding!"

I stared at Diana in disbelief. Her finger only had a tiny cut that was not even an inch long. It did not even break through her skin!

A moment later, a heavy slap sent my head wobbling to the side, my vision spinning.

"You shameless woman! How dare you even touch Diana! If anything were to happen to her, I'll fucking kill you!" Mom shouted.

Cecily was woken up by the commotion and started crying loudly.

Mom continued, "And that useless daughter of yours! Why even bother giving her a name? Just call her what she is—an illegitimate child!

"I'm just going to say it now. Jorge and I have already agreed to donate her kidney to Diana's son."

Cold sweat dripped down my face from the pain. My voice trembled as I questioned, "Then what about Cecily?"

"What else?" Mom scoffed. "She'll just die, I guess."

Chapter 4

Mom tried to snatch Cecily away from me, so I immediately lunged at her like a madwoman.

She stumbled backward in shock. "What are you doing?"

She became enraged when she saw me clutching Cecily tightly in my arms. "You're both worthless! You're just a bigger piece of trash holding onto a smaller one! Why don't the both of you just die already?"

Still furious, she stepped forward and delivered a violent kick to my stomach.

It was excruciating.

It hurt so much that I could barely breathe. I felt warm liquid trickling down my thighs, and soon, intense pain erupted from my abdomen. "Mom, call 911."

My voice became so weak that it was almost inaudible. "It hurts, Mom. Please, help me."

Diana glared at me before turning back to Mom, her voice trembling. "My hand's bruised from Laura hitting me! I need to go to the hospital!"

Mom and Jorge dared not delay. They treated Diana's injury like an emergency and rushed her to the hospital.

Cecily started wailing even louder in my arms. I gently placed her beside me and used the last of my strength to rummage through my bag for my phone. "Hello, 911? Please save me. I'm having a miscarriage."

When I opened my eyes again, I found myself in a white hospital room.

I immediately shot up on the bed, only to be forced back down by the immense pain in my body. "Doctor! What happened to me, doctor? My child!"

The doctor was visibly drained as he slowly replied, "I'm sorry. You had already suffered massive blood loss by the time you were brought in. The baby didn't make it."

My heart clenched tightly. I had carried my second child with me for months. It was as if it was already a part of me.

Tears streamed down my face uncontrollably as I struggled to sit up on the bed, my hands waving weakly. "Where's Cecily? Where's my daughter?"

A familiar voice came from outside the door. "Huh."

Mom walked into the room, appearing disdainful, as she remarked, "So you're still worried about that little brat even now? I guess you really are her mother, huh?"

My body began to tremble, and I lunged at her as I shouted, "Where's Cecily? Where is she?"

A loud slap echoed across the room, and a sharp pain seared across my face.

Having just undergone a miscarriage, the slap had almost sent me crashing to the ground.

The doctor quickly stepped in front of me. "What do you think you're doing?"

Mom waved her fists angrily and shouted, "Fortunately, Diana is fine! Otherwise, I'd have you and your baby buried with her!"

It turned out that Mom did not know that I had already lost the baby.

Jorge suddenly appeared out of nowhere, looking torn as he stood between me and Mom.

He eventually approached me and said, "You were in the wrong this time, Laura. But at least Diana is fine now. Just apologize to her, okay?"

So in the end, I still had to apologize to her.

I laughed out loud in my mind. The tiny scratch on Diana's hand had probably already healed before she even got to a hospital.

When I finally saw Cecily peeking out from behind Jorge, my mind calmed down again. I immediately grabbed her and bolted toward the door, completely ignoring the searing pain throughout my entire body.

Mom screamed furiously from behind me. "You vixen! If you dare step out of that door, I swear that I'll cut ties with you!"

I felt that a weight had finally been lifted off my chest.

Now that the child in my belly was gone, I had nothing left that would hold me back.

My mother, my husband, and my sister—they could all go to hell for all I care.

Severing ties would be precisely what I wanted.

Not far from the hospital's entrance was Angela Glover with her head poking out of a car window. "Laura! Over here!"

Angela opened the rear car door and helped me place Cecily inside.

She then asked, "Are you sure you're okay, Laura? You shouldn't be moving around so much after a miscarriage."

My hands paused mid-air.

It was just a simple expression of concern, yet it only made me wonder how long it had been since I was asked such a question.

Angela had been my neighbor since we were children. Her father was a drunkard who abused her frequently.

Every time her father got wasted on alcohol, she would run to my house seeking refuge.

Mom and Diana despised her, so I had to sneak her into my room and hide her in my closet.

Over time, we became close friends and remained so ever since.

"Laura, do they know about your miscarriage?" Angela asked.

I shook my head weakly and replied, "They don't. That's also why I need your help with something."

I reached into my bag and pulled out my divorce papers.

I had repeatedly convinced myself that even though I never married Henry, I still had him by my side. I believed that he loved me.

But reality would only slap me in the face again and again. Jorge had always loved Diana, and marrying me was just a way for him to get closer to her!

I once believed that enduring everything now would eventually lead to a happy ending.

But in the end, all I ever got in return was a mother that played favorites, a husband that betrayed me, and a twin sister who took everything for granted.

I was exhausted. It was time to end this.

I handed the divorce papers to Angela and said, "Give these to Jorge for me."

Angela was stunned. "Laura."

I smiled and replied, "This time, I have to win."
