Chapter 3

The emergency room doors closed behind Yvonne, cutting off the outside world in an instant.

Inside, everything moved fast and precise.

Monitors beeped in steady rhythms. Nurses spoke in quick, practiced tones. The sharp scent of disinfectant filled the air.

“Female, forty five years old. Sudden chest pain. Blood pressure unstable,” a nurse reported.

Yvonne stepped forward without hesitation and pulled on her gloves.

“Start oxygen. Prepare the ECG. Get me her vitals again.”

Her voice was calm and controlled, leaving no room for panic.

This was her world.

The chaos did not overwhelm her. It sharpened her.

The patient was pale, her breathing uneven, her hand clutching her chest. Yvonne moved to her side and began the examination, her movements quick but steady.

“Stay with me,” she said. “You are going to be fine.”

Minutes passed in focused intensity. Instructions were given, carried out, adjusted. The team worked in rhythm around her.

Ten minutes later, the situation stabilized.

The patient’s breathing evened out. Her pulse steadied.

The immediate danger had passed.

“Good work, Doctor Carter,” a nurse said with visible relief.

Yvonne gave a small nod and stepped back.

Only then did she notice the faint dampness on her back. The pressure had been real, but she had not allowed it to show.

She removed her gloves and walked out of the emergency room.

The corridor outside felt quieter.

And then she saw him.

Adrian Blake was still there.

He stood near the wall, tall and composed, but his eyes were fixed entirely on her.

As if nothing else existed.

Yvonne paused for a brief second before continuing forward.

They stopped a short distance apart.

Close enough to speak.

Far enough to feel like strangers.

“You work here,” Adrian said.

“Yes.”

His gaze lingered on her, searching for something familiar and failing to find it.

“When did this happen?”

Yvonne met his eyes calmly.

“That is not something I need to explain to my ex husband.”

The words landed harder than she intended, but she did not take them back.

Adrian’s expression tightened.

“I did not know,” he said. “You never told me.”

A faint smile touched her lips, but there was no warmth in it.

“I did not know I needed permission to exist.”

A nurse passed by, glancing at them with curiosity.

Yvonne stepped slightly aside, maintaining distance.

“If you have no medical reason to be here, you should leave,” she said. “This is a hospital.”

He did not move.

Instead, he asked, “Who was the patient?”

“A stranger,” she replied. “Like us now.”

The simplicity of her answer made his jaw tighten.

Before he could respond, a soft voice interrupted.

“Adrian.”

Sophia approached them slowly, one hand resting lightly against her chest. Her expression was pale, her movements delicate.

“I feel a little dizzy,” she said quietly.

Adrian’s attention shifted immediately.

“Sit down,” he said, supporting her arm with care.

The concern in his voice was clear. Natural.

Effortless.

Yvonne watched for a moment.

It was a kind of attention she had never received from him.

Adrian turned back to her.

“Check her,” he said.

Yvonne held his gaze for a second.

“I am not her attending doctor,” she replied. “Please register at the front desk.”

Sophia looked at her more closely.

Recognition flickered across her face.

“So it is you,” she said softly. “Adrian’s wife.”

“Ex wife,” Yvonne corrected.

Sophia hesitated, then lowered her gaze slightly.

“I am sorry. I did not mean to cause any trouble.”

“You did not,” Yvonne said.

Another doctor approached from the side.

“Doctor Carter, Director Lin is asking for you.”

“I will be there.”

Yvonne turned and walked away without another glance.

Behind her, Adrian stood still, watching her leave.

Again.

The same way she had walked away from him outside the civil office.

But this time, the feeling in his chest was sharper. It lingered longer.

And it did not feel like relief.

That night, Adrian did not sleep.

He lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, but his mind refused to settle.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw her again.

In a white coat.

Focused. Calm. Distant.

Untouchable.

It was nothing like the woman he remembered.

The Yvonne he knew had always waited quietly. She spoke softly, moved carefully, and looked at him with a kind of patience he had taken for granted.

But the woman in the hospital had not looked at him like that.

She had not looked at him at all.

He sat up and rubbed his forehead, irritation building in his chest.

“This is just temporary,” he said under his breath. “She is pretending to be strong.”

That had to be it.

She had always been good at enduring things silently.

This was just another form of it.

The next day, news began to spread quietly among certain circles.

Doctor Yvonne Carter had returned.

Not only returned, but taken a leadership position at Bright Star Private Hospital.

Head of the emergency department.

Some people remembered her name from years ago.

Others were hearing it for the first time.

But one thing became clear very quickly.

She was no longer just Adrian Blake’s former wife.

At the hospital, Yvonne’s schedule filled immediately.

Meetings. Emergency cases. Department planning.

Her days became tightly structured, leaving little space for anything else.

And she did not mind.

For the first time in years, she felt in control of her life.

During a short lunch break, Auntie Lin sat across from her.

“You saw Adrian yesterday,” she said.

“Yes.”

“And how did it go?”

“There was nothing to talk about,” Yvonne replied.

Auntie Lin studied her expression carefully.

“You sound calm.”

“I am.”

A faint smile appeared on the older woman’s face.

“Good. That means you are finally free.”

Yvonne lowered her gaze slightly but said nothing.

Free.

The word felt unfamiliar, but not unpleasant.

That afternoon, a black luxury car stopped outside the hospital.

Adrian stepped out.

This time, he came alone.

He walked straight into the emergency department without hesitation.

The nurse at the desk looked up.

“Sir, do you have an appointment?”

“I am here to see Doctor Carter.”

“She is currently in surgery.”

“I will wait.”

He sat down on a nearby bench.

Time passed slowly.

People came and went. Patients were wheeled in and out. Staff moved around him without pause.

One hour passed.

Then two.

Finally, the surgery room doors opened.

Yvonne walked out, removing her mask as she stepped into the corridor.

Her eyes met his.

There was no surprise in her expression.

“You are here again,” she said.

“Yes.”

“For Sophia?”

“No.”

That answer made her pause.

“Then why are you here?”

“I came to see you.”

Yvonne looked at him quietly for a moment before walking to the sink to wash her hands.

“Is that necessary?” she asked.

“Yes.”

She dried her hands slowly before turning to face him.

“What do you want to say?”

Adrian stepped closer, his expression more serious than before.

“Why did you never tell me you were a doctor?”

Yvonne met his gaze without hesitation.

“Why did you never ask?”

He frowned.

“You never talked about it.”

“You never listened,” she replied.

The silence that followed was heavier this time.

“I thought you were just a housewife,” he said. “I thought you needed me.”

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

“That was your mistake.”

His chest tightened.

“I gave up my career for that marriage,” she continued. “Not because you asked me to. Because I chose to.”

He looked at her, something unreadable passing through his eyes.

“I regret it,” he said.

The word lingered between them.

Yvonne’s heartbeat shifted for a moment, but her expression remained calm.

“You regret divorcing me?”

He hesitated.

“I regret not knowing you.”

A soft laugh escaped her.

“That is worse.”

He took another step closer.

“Can we talk somewhere else?”

“There is nothing to talk about.”

“Yvonne.”

“Doctor Carter,” she corrected.

The distance between them widened again.

She turned to leave.

His hand reached out instinctively and caught her wrist.

The contact froze them both.

For a brief second, neither moved.

Yvonne slowly pulled her hand back.

“Do not touch me,” she said quietly.

There was no anger in her voice.

Just a clear boundary.

People nearby had already started to look in their direction.

Adrian lowered his hand.

“I am sorry.”

She gave a small nod.

“Goodbye, Mr Blake.”

That night, Adrian stood alone on the balcony of the villa.

The city lights stretched endlessly in front of him.

Behind him, the house was silent.

He walked back inside and stopped at the dining table.

After a moment, he went to the kitchen and made himself a cup of instant soup.

He took one sip and frowned.

It tasted flat. Empty.

Nothing like what she used to make.

For the first time, he realized something he had never considered before.

She had not just left the marriage.

She had taken something with her.

Something he had never valued until it was gone.

At the hospital, Yvonne finished her shift late.

As she walked out into the night, her phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

She answered.

“Hello?”

“Doctor Carter,” a man’s voice said. “This is James Moore from Zenith Medical Group. We would like to invite you to join an international medical project.”

Yvonne stopped walking.

Zenith Medical Group.

The top medical organization in the country.

“You are inviting me?” she asked.

“Yes. We have been observing your work for some time.”

Her grip on the phone tightened slightly.

“When would you like to meet?”

“Tomorrow, if possible.”

Yvonne looked up at the night sky, her expression thoughtful.

“Tomorrow is fine.”

After the call ended, she stood still for a moment.

A new door had just opened.

And she had no intention of looking back.

She did not know it yet.

But when Adrian learned where she was going next, he would finally understand one thing clearly.

Letting her go was not the end.

It was the beginning of everything he was about to lose.

Chapter 4

The city was still half asleep when I woke up.

Sunlight slipped through the curtains of my apartment, landing softly on the floor.

I lay there for a moment, staring at the ceiling, listening to my own breathing.

This kind of quiet was something I never had in the Blake villa.

 There, even silence felt heavy.

My phone buzzed on the bedside table.

A message from Auntie Lin.

"Did you sleep well Big day today"

I smiled faintly and replied.

 "Yes. I am ready."

But the truth was, my heart was not as calm as my words.

I sat up and pressed my hand against my chest.

Why was my heart beating so fast?.

Is it because of the meeting with Zenith Medical Group.

Or because Adrian's face still appeared in my mind when I closed my eyes.

I pushed the thought away and got up.

After a simple breakfast, I put on a clean white shirt and black pants.

No makeup, no jewelry.

I wanted to face today as Doctor Yvonne Carter, nothing else.

At the Blake villa, Adrian woke up late.

He had barely slept.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the same scene.

Me pulling my wrist away, me saying do not touch me.

The cold in my voice hurt more than anything.

He sat up and stared at the empty side of the bed.

His phone was on the table.

He picked it up and opened our chat window again.

Still nothing.

He scrolled up.

Good morning Did you sleep well I left soup on the stove

Message after message.

All sent by me.

All unanswered.

His throat tightened.

He suddenly realized something terrifying.

I had been talking to him for three years and he had never replied.

He threw the phone onto the bed and stood up.

In the bathroom, he looked at his reflection.

His eyes were tired.

When did this happen, when did his life become so quiet.

He remembered a night from last year.

He came home drunk.

I waited for him in the living room, worried.

He walked past me without a word.

That night, I cried quietly in the kitchen.

He heard it but he chose to ignore it

The memory stabbed him sharply.

At the hospital, I walked out of the building and stopped a taxi.

"Zenith Tower," I told the driver.

The car moved through the morning traffic.

My fingers rested on my bag.

Inside it was my CV, it looked simple and clean but it carried years of effort.

When the car stopped in front of Zenith Tower, I looked up.

The building was tall and modern, shining under the sun.

This was a place I never dared to imagine while I was married.

I took a deep breath and walked inside.

 The meeting room was bright.

James Moore stood up when he saw me. "Doctor Carter," he said warmly.

"Thank you for coming." He said.

He was in his early forties, with calm eyes and a gentle smile.

"Thank you for the invitation," I replied.

 We sat down.

He went straight to the point.

"We want you to lead our emergency response team for an international medical program," he said.

"The project will last two years." He added.

Two years.

 My heart skipped.

"That is a long time," I said.

"Yes," he replied. "It will involve traveling abroad."

 I hesitated.

Traveling abroad meant leaving this city.

Leaving everything, including Adrian.

James seemed to notice my pause.

"You do not have to decide now," he said. "But we hope for an answer within a week."

I nodded.

"Thank you for considering me." I said

As I stood up to leave, he added, "Doctor Carter, talent like yours should not be hidden."

Hidden.

That word stayed with me.

For years I had hidden myself not because I had to, but because I loved someone who never noticed me .

Outside the building, the wind was strong.

I wrapped my arms around myself.

A strange mix of emotions filled my chest.

Excitement, fear and sadness.

At the same time, Adrian drove to Bright Star Hospital.

He did not know why he came.

He just knew he had to see me.

When he arrived, he went straight to the emergency department.

The nurse recognized him.

"You are here again," she said.

 "Yes," he replied.

"Is Doctor Carter on duty"

"She is off today."

He felt sad.

"Do you know where she went"

The nurse shook her head.

 "I am sorry."

He stood there for a moment, feeling foolish.

For three years, he never asked where I went.

Now he was asking strangers.

He walked out of the hospital slowly.

As he passed the lobby, he heard two nurses whispering.

"Doctor Carter is amazing."

 "Yes."

"I heard Zenith Medical Group invited her today."

"Really"

"That is huge."

His steps stopped.

 Zenith Medical Group.

The name echoed in his head.

That afternoon, I returned to my apartment.

I placed my bag on the table and sat down.

The room felt small but warm.

I opened my phone and stared at the screen.

There was no message from Adrian.

 There never would be.

 I closed my eyes.

Why did it still hurt, why did I still feel sad

I hugged my knees and leaned against the sofa.

"I am free now," I whispered.

"So why does it feel like I lost something"

Tears fell silently.

I cried not because I loved him.

But because I had once loved him so deeply.

At night, the rain fell heavily.

The rain hit the windows hard.

There was a loud thunder sound.

I stood by the window, watching the rain.

This weather reminded me of another sad memory.

Three years ago.

I had a high fever that night.

I called Adrian, he did not answer.

I waited until morning, shaking under the blanket.

When he came home, I was already better.

He never knew.

Outside, lightning flashed.

At the same time, Adrian stood alone in the villa.

The power went out for a moment.

The house fell into darkness.

For the first time, he felt fear.

Not fear of the dark but the fear of being alone.

He remembered that memory too.

He remembered me laid quietly alone on the sofa the next morning.

 He thought I was sleeping.

Now he knew better.

He sat down heavily.

"I am sorry," he said into the empty room.

My phone rang suddenly.

The sound startled me.

I looked at the screen.

Adrian Blake.

My fingers stiffened.

For a long time, I did not answer.

The phone kept ringing, my  heart pounded.

Finally, I answered.

"Hello" His voice came through the line, low and calm.

"Yvonne," he said. "Where are you"

I closed my eyes.

"That is not your concern," I replied.

"I heard about Zenith," he said. "Are you leaving?"

 Silence filled the line.

I did not deny it.

"You are really leaving?," he asked slowly.

"Yes."

"When"

 "I have not decided."

 He took a sharp breath.

 "Do not go."

 Those three words shook me.

I laughed softly.

"You did not say that when you asked for a divorce."

"I was wrong," he said. "I did not know what I was losing."

I leaned my forehead against the cold window.

"You lost me the moment you gave me the divorce papers to sign" I replied.

The rain poured louder.

"Give me another chance," he said."I will make it right."

I opened my eyes.

The city lights blurred with tears.

"I gave you three years," I whispered.

"You did not even give me one look."

He was silent.

Then he said something that made my heart stop.

"If you leave," he said, "I will follow you."

"What did you say"

"I mean it," he continued. "Wherever you go, I will go."

My hand tightened around the phone.

And in that moment, I knew.

If I walked away now, everything would change.

For both of us.

But if I stayed, I might lose myself again.

I closed my eyes and made no answer.

The call ended.

 Outside, thunder roared.

Inside, my heart was breaking.

And I did not know yet which path I would choose.

Chapter 5

The rain lasted all night.

When morning came, the sky was gray, heavy, like it had not decided whether to clear up or break down again.

I barely slept.

Adrian's words echoed in my mind again and again.

"If you leave, I will follow you."

I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at my phone.

 He had not called again.

No message, no explanation, just like before.

I let out a slow breath.

I got up, washed my face, and tied my hair back.

The woman in the mirror looked calm, but her eyes were tired.

 "Focus," I told myself.

"You cannot move forward if you keep looking back."

At Bright Star Hospital, the atmosphere felt different that day.

People greeted me with brighter smiles.

"Good morning, Doctor Carter."

"Doctor Carter, the patient from yesterday is stable."

I nodded, replied and kept walking.

Work was my shield.

As long as I stayed busy, my heart stayed quiet.

During the morning meeting, Auntie Lin glanced at me several times.

After everyone left, she closed the door.

"You met Zenith yesterday," she said.

 "Yes."

"And?" She asked.

"They offered me a two year project abroad."

 She leaned back slightly.

"That is a big step." She said.

 "Yes."

She studied my face.

 "You look troubled." She said

" I smiled faintly. "Big changes are always scary."

She was silent for a moment.

"Is it because of Adrian" she asked.

 I did not answer.

 That was already an answer.

Auntie Lin sighed.

"Yvonne, listen to me," she said gently.

"Some people only realize the value of someone after they lose them . But not all regret deserves forgiveness." She continued.

 I lowered my head.

 "I know."

"Knowing is not the same as accepting," she replied.

Her words stayed with me the whole day.

That afternoon, a young nurse rushed toward me.

"Doctor Carter, there is an emergency consultation. The patient insists on seeing you."

"Who is it"

The nurse hesitated.

 "It is Mr Blake."

 My steps stopped.

Of course it was him.

"I am busy," I said. "Assign another doctor."

"He refuses," the nurse said nervously.

"He says if you do not come, he will not accept treatment."

I closed my eyes.

This was exactly like him.

Using pressure, using position, using control.

"I will go," I said finally.

Not because I cared but because this was a hospital.

When I walked into the consultation room, Adrian stood up.

He looked different, less perfect.

His eyes were red, his suit slightly wrinkled.

"You are sick" I asked coldly.

"No," he replied. "I am fine."

"Then why are you here"

"To see you."

I sat down and opened a file.

"This is a hospital, not a meeting room," I said.

"If you have no medical issue, please leave."

He did not move.

"Yvonne," he said, lowering his voice.

"I thought about everything last night." "I was wrong," he continued.

"About you. About us."

I finally looked up at him.

"Adrian," I said quietly.

"Do you know what hurts the most"

He shook his head.

"It is not the divorce," I said.

"It is that you only speak when I am already gone."

 He looked at me.

"I want to start again," he said. "From the beginning."

"There is no beginning anymore."

"There can be," he insisted. "I will wait. I will change."

 I smiled.

"You waited three years for Sophia," I said. "But you could not wait three minutes for me."

His face turned pale.

"That is different," he said weakly.

"No," I replied. "It is the same."

 I stood up.

"Please leave," I said.

"Do not come to my workplace again."

 He stepped closer.

"You are really going to leave," he said. "You already decided."

"I am deciding," I corrected. "And you are not part of it."

Something broke in his eyes.

"Then tell me," he asked suddenly. "Did you ever love me"

 The room fell silent.

 I looked at him.

"Yes," I answered honestly. "I loved you."

His eyes lit up.

"But," I continued, "I will never love you like that again."

I walked past him without another word.

That evening, I received an email from Zenith Medical Group.

They attached the contract.

 Two years, international recognition.

At the bottom was a line.

Please confirm within three days.

Three days.

 I stared at the screen.

Three days to choose my future.

That night, I visited the old neighborhood near the hospital.

There was a small food stall there.

I used to eat there during night shifts years ago.

I ordered a bowl of soup.

When it arrived, steam rose slowly.

 I took one sip.

It was warm and comforting.

 Suddenly, tears filled my eyes.

This was the warmth I had been trying to give Adrian for three years.

 He never tasted it.

 My phone vibrated again.

 Sophia.

I frowned and answered.

"Hello"

"Yvonne," she said softly. "Can we meet"

 I was silent.

"I know I have no right," she continued. "But please. Just once."

 "Why" I asked.

"Because Adrian is falling apart," she said. "And it is because of you."

 I laughed quietly.

"He fell apart because he finally feels something," I replied. "That is not my responsibility."

She inhaled shakily.

"You are leaving, right" she asked.

 "Yes." I replied.

"Then please meet me," she said. "Before you go."

 I hesitated.

Then I agreed.

"Tomorrow afternoon," I said. "One hour."

After the call ended, I felt a strange calm.

The next day came faster than expected.

I signed discharge papers, reviewed cases, and finally took off my white coat.

At the cafe near the river, Sophia was already waiting.

 She looked thinner, more fragile.

"You look different," she said when she saw me.

 "So do you."

We sat in silence for a moment.

"I never thought it would end like this," she said.

 "Neither did I."

She looked down at her cup.

"I thought if I came back, everything would return to how it was," she said. "But he looks at me differently now."

 I smiled faintly.

"He is chasing something he lost." I said

"And what about you" she asked. "Do you still want him"

I looked out the window.

"No," I said. "I want myself."

 Sophia nodded slowly.

"I envy you," she whispered.

I left the cafe.

As I walked toward my car, someone stood in my way.

 Adrian.

He looked at me like he was afraid I would disappear if he blinked. "

You met her," he said.

"Yes."

"What did she say" he said

"Nothing important." I said

 He took a deep breath.

"Are you really leaving" he asked

I did not answer.

Instead, I handed him something.

 An envelope.

He frowned and opened it.

Inside was a copy of the Zenith contract.

His hands shook.

 "You already signed? "he asked.

"No," I replied. "I will sign it tomorrow."

Tomorrow.

 He looked up sharply.

"You will not even give me time?" He asked.

"I gave you three years," I said softly. "This is me giving myself one chance."

He stepped back.

At that moment, his phone rang.

 He answered absentmindedly.

"Mr Blake," the voice said urgently. "The board meeting has been moved up.

There is a problem with the overseas project. We need you immediately."

 Overseas project.

The word hung in the air.

 I smiled

. "Looks like," I said quietly, "we are both being pulled in different directions."

 I turned to leave.

Behind me, he called my name but I did not stop.

That night, I sat at my desk, staring at the Zenith contract.

A pen in my hand.

Outside, the city lights glittered.

I closed my eyes.

Tomorrow, everything would change.

Either I would leave this city.

Or I would stay and face a past that still refused to let go.

My phone buzzed one last time.

 A message.

Doctor Carter, this is Zenith Medical Group.

Due to sudden changes, the project start date has been moved up.

Departure is in forty eight hours.

My breath caught.

At the blank signature line and then at the window, where the city waited quietly.

Somewhere in that city, Adrian Blake was about to make a choice too.

What I didn't know yet-someone was already on their way to stop me from leaving. And this time, it wasn't Adrian.
