Chapter 1

The negotiation table was a battlefield I knew well. As the Luna of the Shadow Moon Pack, I had spent the last ten years perfecting the art of war with words. Across the mahogany table, Alpha Marcus of the Silver Claw Pack was sweating, his pen hovering over the trade agreement that would secure our borders for another decade.

"It seems equitable, Luna Sabrina," Marcus grunted, finally signing. "Your husband is a lucky man to have a mate with such a sharp mind."

"Luck has nothing to do with it, Alpha," I replied smoothly, organizing the documents. My hand instinctively brushed my flat stomach. I hadn't told Lorenzo yet. I wanted to surprise him tonight after the treaty was signed. A pup. Finally.

The heavy oak doors swung open, interrupting my thoughts. Kehlani Grant, Alpha Marcus’s daughter, sauntered in. She was beautiful in a superficial way, all blonde curls and polished ambition, but her presence usually annoyed me. Today, however, it froze me in place.

"Daddy, look," she chirped, waving a diamond bracelet that caught the light. "My mystery Alpha sent it."

As she breezed past me to sit on the edge of her father's desk, the air shifted. Her usual scent—a cloying, artificial vanilla—was there, but underneath it lay something else. Something rich, earthy, and terrifyingly familiar.

Cedarwood and rain.

My wolf, Sasha, bristled instantly. *That is our mate's scent.*

I stopped breathing for a second. Lorenzo? No. Lorenzo was at our pack house, miles away, managing the warriors. But the scent was fresh, clinging to Kehlani’s skin like a second layer of perfume.

"Kehlani," I said, my voice steady despite the ice spreading in my chest. "That is a lovely gift. Who is this mystery suitor?"

She smirked, her eyes glinting with a malice I hadn’t noticed before. "Oh, someone very powerful, Luna Sabrina. He’s building me a palace, actually. Says I deserve a throne, not just a pack house."

She hopped off the desk, and a folded piece of paper slipped from her designer purse, fluttering to the floor near my foot. She didn't notice. She was too busy preening for her father.

When she left, I dropped my pen. Bending to retrieve it, I palmed the paper. It was a contractor’s invoice. *Luxe Construction.* The coordinates pointed to a plot of land in the neutral territory between our packs.

My heart hammered against my ribs. I finished the meeting on autopilot, my diplomatic mask firmly in place, but inside, I was screaming.

I didn't go home. I drove to the coordinates.

The structure rising from the forest floor was not a house; it was a fortress of glass and stone, modern and obscenely expensive. I parked my modest sedan and walked toward the open front doors. The contractors were on lunch break, leaving the site silent.

I walked through the grand foyer, my heels clicking on marble that I recognized. It was the same imported Italian stone I had wanted for the pack hospital renovation—the renovation Lorenzo had claimed we couldn't afford.

I climbed the floating staircase, drawn by a sick intuition. The master suite was already furnished. A massive bed sat in the center of the room, draped in silk. But it was the painting above the fireplace that brought me to my knees.

It was an oil painting. Lorenzo, looking strong and regal, with his hand resting possessively on the shoulder of a seated woman.

Kehlani.

The brass plaque on the frame read: *Alpha Lorenzo and his True Luna.*

The world tilted. Ten years. Ten years of building his pack, managing his alliances, warming his bed, and waiting for a child. And he was building a shrine to another woman with our money.

Sasha howled in my mind, a sound of pure agony, but I shoved the pain down. I needed answers. Now.

I drove back to the Shadow Moon territory at breakneck speed. The guards at the gate waved me through, oblivious to the fact that their Luna’s life had just incinerated.

I stormed into the pack house. The scent was stronger here. Vanilla and cedarwood. It led straight to Lorenzo's office.

I didn't knock. I threw the double doors open so hard they banged against the walls.

They were there. Lorenzo was sitting in his leather chair, and Kehlani was straddling his lap, her fingers tangled in his hair. They didn't jump apart. They didn't look ashamed.

Lorenzo looked up, his eyes cold and annoyed, as if I were a maid interrupting a private meeting.

"Get off him," I said, my voice low and trembling with suppressed rage.

Kehlani giggled, sliding off his lap slowly, smoothing her skirt. "I told you she'd find out eventually, Ren."

"Lorenzo," I choked out, holding up the crumpled invoice. "The house. The accounts. The painting. How could you?"

He stood up, adjusting his cuffs. He looked at me with a detached, bored expression that hurt more than hatred. "Sabrina. Stop the theatrics. You’re embarrassing yourself."

"Embarrassing myself?" I stepped forward, tossing the paper onto his desk. "I am your mate! I have served this pack for a decade!"

"You have served as a business partner," Lorenzo sneered, walking around the desk to stand beside Kehlani. He wrapped an arm around her waist. "Look at you. You’re stiff. Political. Cold. You manage the pack like a corporation. Kehlani... she is what a wolf needs. She is fire. She is my destiny."

"I am pregnant," I wanted to scream. But the words stuck in my throat. I wouldn't give him that ammunition. Not while he held her.

"I want you out of the Luna suite by tonight," Lorenzo said casually, as if discussing the weather. "Kehlani will be moving in."

"You can't do that," I whispered. "The pack loves me. The Elders—"

"The Elders listen to their Alpha!" Lorenzo’s voice boomed, utilizing the Alpha tone that forced my wolf to whimper in submission. He stepped closer, towering over me. "Let’s make this simple, Sabrina. You are not my true mate. I settled for you because you were useful. You aren't anymore."

He leaned down, his face inches from mine. I could smell her on his breath.

"Step down voluntarily," he hissed. "Accept the rank of Omega. You can clean the floors and stay in the servant's quarters. If you refuse, I will strip the title from you by force, and I will make sure you are left with nothing. Choose."

Chapter 2

The command hit me like a physical blow to the chest. Lorenzo’s voice wasn’t just loud; it was laced with the ancient, crushing weight of Alpha authority. It vibrated in my bones, demanding obedience from every cell in my body.

"Kneel!"

My knees buckled before my brain could process the order. I hit the hardwood floor hard, the impact jarring my spine. I gasped, trying to scramble back up, to fight the invisible hands pressing me down, but the air in the room had turned heavy, suffocating. It felt like gravity had increased tenfold.

"Lorenzo, stop," I wheezed, my hands clawing at the polished wood. "You’re hurting me... hurting us..."

He didn't listen. He stood over me, his eyes glowing with a feral, amber light that I used to find comforting. Now, it was the gaze of a stranger. Kehlani watched from the corner, a cruel little smile playing on her lips as she toyed with a lock of her hair.

"I gave you a choice, Sabrina," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, vibrating growl. "You chose defiance. You chose to cling to a title you no longer deserve."

"I built this pack!" I screamed, or tried to. It came out as a strangled cry. My wolf, Sasha, was whining in agony, curled into a ball in the back of my mind. She was strong, but against a direct Alpha command from her own mate, she was paralyzed.

A sharp, tearing pain ripped through my lower abdomen. It was sudden and absolute, like a hot knife twisting inside me. I doubled over, clutching my stomach, sweat instantly beading on my forehead.

"Please," I begged, my vision blurring. "Something is wrong. Lorenzo, please..."

He looked down at me with cold indifference. "I, Lorenzo Brooks, Alpha of the Shadow Moon Pack, reject you, Sabrina Barnes."

The bond snapped. It wasn't a clean break; it was a violent tearing of the soul. I screamed then, a raw, guttural sound that scraped my throat raw. The pain in my stomach intensified, eclipsing the heartbreak. It felt like my insides were dissolving.

"I reject you as my Luna," he continued, his voice relentless. "I reject you as my mate."

Darkness rushed in from the edges of my vision. I felt warmth spreading between my legs, soaking through my dress. The scent of blood—my blood—filled the air, sharp and metallic. The last thing I saw before the world went black was Kehlani wrinkling her nose in disgust.

The beeping of a monitor was the first thing to pierce the fog. I woke up to the sterile smell of antiseptic and the harsh fluorescent lights of the pack infirmary. My body felt hollow. Ached in a way that went deeper than muscle or bone.

Dr. Evans was standing by the bed, his face pale and drawn. He wouldn't meet my eyes.

"Sabrina," he said softly. Not 'Luna.' Just Sabrina.

"My baby," I whispered, my hand moving instinctively to my stomach. It felt flat. Empty. The spark of life I had sensed just hours ago was gone.

Dr. Evans closed his eyes for a moment. "I'm so sorry. The trauma... the Alpha command combined with the rejection... your body couldn't handle the shock. You miscarried."

A wail built in my chest, but I didn't have the breath to let it out. I just stared at the ceiling, tears leaking silently from the corners of my eyes. I had lost my mate. I had lost my title. And now, I had lost the only innocent thing left in this wretched world.

The door opened. I expected comfort. I expected an apology. Instead, Lorenzo walked in. He looked fresh, showered, wearing a crisp new suit. He glanced at the monitor, then at me, with zero emotion.

"It’s done then?" he asked the doctor.

"Alpha," Dr. Evans stammered. "She needs rest. The physical toll—"

"She is weak," Lorenzo interrupted, his eyes boring into mine. "A strong Luna would have withstood a simple command. A strong wolf would have protected her pup. This just proves you were never fit to carry my heir, Sabrina."

The cruelty of his words stole the air from the room. He wasn't just rejecting me; he was erasing me. He was rewriting our history to make my pain my own fault.

"Get out," I whispered.

"This is my infirmary," he sneered. "And you are taking up a bed meant for pack members. You have one hour to clear out your belongings from the Alpha suite. You’ve been reassigned to the Omega quarters."

He turned on his heel and left. He didn't look back.

***

The walk to the basement was the longest journey of my life. I was still bleeding, physically and emotionally, but I refused to let them drag me. I packed a single duffel bag. My clothes, my jewelry, the heirlooms from my mother—Lorenzo’s guards confiscated them at the door. "Pack property," they sneered.

I was left with two oversized t-shirts and a pair of worn leggings.

The Omega quarters were damp and smelled of mildew. It was a stark contrast to the sun-drenched balcony of the Luna suite. The room was a concrete box with a cot in the corner and a single, flickering bulb.

As I walked down the hallway, I passed wolves I had helped. Wolves whose children I had babysat. Wolves whose medical bills I had paid from my own savings. They looked away. Some scowled, mimicking their Alpha’s disdain. Fear was a potent drug, and Lorenzo had dosed them all.

I sat on the thin, lumpy mattress, pulling my knees to my chest. The concrete walls seemed to close in on me. Above me, through the floorboards, I could hear the muffled thumping of bass. Music.

They were having a party.

Laughter drifted down through the vents. I heard the clinking of glasses and the murmur of a toast. Lorenzo’s voice, booming and cheerful, announced something about a "new era" and a "true future."

I wrapped my arms around my empty stomach and rocked back and forth, the cold of the basement seeping into my bones. Sasha was silent, dormant in her grief. I was completely alone. But as the tears finally dried on my cheeks, a cold, hard knot formed in the center of my chest.

He thought I was weak. He thought he had broken me.

I listened to them celebrate my destruction, and for the first time in ten years, I didn't feel love for Lorenzo Brooks. I felt the first, flickering spark of something else entirely.

Hatred.

Chapter 3

The smell of bleach had become my new perfume. For two weeks, I had lived on my knees, not in prayer, but in servitude. My hands, once used to signing treaties and calming traumatized pups, were now red and cracked from scrubbing the pack house floors.

I was invisible. I was a ghost haunting the halls I used to rule.

"Missed a spot, Omega," Kehlani chirped, deliberately tipping her latte onto the pristine tiles of the foyer. The brown liquid splashed against the hem of my oversized, gray t-shirt—the uniform of the lowest rank.

I didn't look up. I didn't speak. I just dipped my rag into the bucket of gray water and began to wipe.

"She’s mute now, Ren," Kehlani laughed, turning to Lorenzo, who was watching from the doorway of his office. "Maybe the miscarriage took her voice, too."

Lorenzo didn't laugh, but he didn't stop her. He just looked at me with a mixture of disgust and something else—guilt? No, that would require a conscience.

I focused on the rhythm of the scrubbing. *Circle, wipe, wring.* My silence was the only shield I had left. If I spoke, I would scream, and if I screamed, they would win.

Later, in the shadows behind the industrial laundry machines, a hand grabbed my arm. I flinched, dropping a basket of towels, but it was Teo. My former Beta looked tired, dark circles bruising the skin under his eyes.

"Take this," he whispered, sliding a cheap burner phone into the pocket of my leggings. "Hide it."

"Teo, if he catches you..." my voice was raspy from disuse.

" Let him," Teo hissed, his eyes flashing with suppressed anger. "The accounts are bleeding, Sabrina. Lorenzo authorized a transfer for Kehlani’s 'wardrobe allowance' that wiped out the warrior training budget. The suppliers are threatening to cut us off. He can’t read your coding system on the ledgers, and he’s too proud to ask for the keys."

A grim satisfaction settled in my chest. I had built this pack’s prosperity brick by brick. It was only fitting that removing the foundation would make the house crumble. "Let it burn, Teo."

"Careful," he warned, squeezing my shoulder before slipping away. "He’s planning something for tonight. A show of force."

He was right.

At sunset, the gathering bells tolled—a deep, resonant sound that usually signaled celebration or war. Two enforcers barged into the laundry room, grabbing me by the arms before I could even stand.

"Move, Omega," one grunted, dragging me out the back door and toward the central square.

The entire pack was there. Hundreds of wolves stood in silent formation, their eyes tracking me as I was hauled through the dirt. I saw pity in some gazes, mockery in others. I kept my chin high, even as my bare feet stumbled over the gravel.

Lorenzo and Kehlani stood on the raised wooden platform in the center of the square. Kehlani was wearing a white silk gown, looking every bit the blushing bride, though her smile was predatory. Lorenzo wore his ceremonial Alpha furs.

The guards threw me down at the base of the stairs. The impact jarred my teeth, sending a fresh wave of ache through my healing body.

"Citizens of the Shadow Moon Pack!" Lorenzo’s voice boomed, amplified by the natural acoustics of the square. "Tonight, we officially welcome your true Luna. But before we begin the celebration, we must clear away the remnants of the past."

He pointed a finger at me.

"Sabrina Barnes," he commanded, his Alpha tone pressing down on my shoulders like a physical weight. "Kneel before Luna Kehlani. Acknowledge her station. Kiss the hem of her dress and beg for her mercy, and perhaps I will let you remain in the pack instead of exiling you to the Rogues."

The square went dead silent. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath.

My wolf, Sasha, stirred from her grief-stricken slumber. She was weak, but she was proud.

I stood up.

My legs shook, and my rags hung loosely on my frame, but I stood. I looked Lorenzo dead in the eye, then shifted my gaze to Kehlani.

"No," I said. It wasn't loud, but it carried.

Kehlani’s smile faltered. Lorenzo’s face darkened, turning a violent shade of red.

"What did you say?" he growled, stepping down the first stair.

"I said no," I repeated, my voice gaining strength. "I will not kneel to a mistress. I will not bow to a thief. She has no aura. She has no power. She is not a Luna; she is a pet."

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

Lorenzo roared. It was a feral, ugly sound. He closed the distance between us in two strides, his hand raised high, palm open but heavy with Alpha strength. He was going to strike me. He was going to beat me into submission in front of the people I used to protect.

I didn't flinch. I didn't close my eyes. I wanted them to see. I wanted them to see exactly what their Alpha was.

His hand began its descent.

*Growl.*

It wasn't a sound; it was an earthquake. A low, vibrating thrum that shook the ground beneath our feet and rattled the teeth in my skull. It wasn't the growl of a wolf; it was the roar of a monster.

Lorenzo froze, his hand suspended inches from my face. His eyes went wide, the amber light in them flickering out, replaced by sudden, primal fear.

Gravel crunched loudly as a convoy of four matte-black SUVs tore into the square, ignoring the perimeter guards. They screeched to a halt in a V-formation, blocking the exit.

The air pressure in the square dropped instantly. Gravity seemed to double. It was an Aura, but not like Lorenzo’s. This wasn't a wave; it was an ocean. It was ancient, heavy, and absolute.

Every wolf in the square dropped to the ground. Not out of respect, but because their instincts gave them no choice. Even Lorenzo stumbled back, his knees buckling, fighting to stay upright.

The door of the lead SUV opened. A polished black boot hit the dirt.

Alpha King Orion Spencer stepped out.

He was taller than I remembered, his shoulders broader. He wore a tailored black suit that strained against his muscles, and his eyes... his eyes were molten gold, burning with a rage that could incinerate cities.

He didn't look at Lorenzo. He didn't look at the cowering pack. He walked straight toward me, moving through the crushing pressure of his own aura as if it were nothing.

Lorenzo opened his mouth to speak, to challenge the intrusion, but Orion simply tilted his head. A wave of pure dominance slammed into Lorenzo, forcing him to his knees with a bone-cracking thud.

Orion stopped in front of me. I was the only one left standing, trembling not from his power, but from the sheer intensity of his gaze.

He unbuttoned his suit jacket, sliding it off his shoulders in one fluid motion. The scent of rain and cedarwood enveloped me—pure, clean, and safe—as he draped the heavy coat around my shivering frame.

"Forgive me for being late," he murmured, his voice a deep velvet rumble that soothed the jagged edges of my soul.

He reached out, his large, warm hand cupping my chin, tilting my face up until I was drowning in his golden eyes.

"Lift your head, Sabrina," he commanded softly, loud enough for Lorenzo to hear from the dirt. "A Queen does not bow to peasants."
