The last night in my Manhattan apartment, I sat on the floor surrounded by boxes. Everything I owned was labeled and sealed. Kitchen. Books. Winter Clothes. I had color-coded them with sticky notes — green for immediate unpack, yellow for later, blue for storage. My mother always said I was the kind of person who made lists for her lists. She wasn't wrong.

I pulled out my phone and video-called Chandler. He answered on the third ring. His face filled the screen, slightly pixelated, hair still damp from a shower.

"Hey," he said. He was smiling. "Ready for tomorrow?"

"I'm ready now," I said. "I'm sitting in an empty apartment with forty-three boxes and a suitcase. I feel like I should be more nervous."

"You're going to love it here," he said. "I promise."

I believed him. Five years of long-distance — five years of weekend flights and time zone math and falling asleep on the phone — were about to end. I had quit my job. A six-figure marketing position at one of the best firms in New York. My boss had looked at me like I was insane when I gave notice. Maybe I was.

But I loved Chandler. And love required sacrifice. That's what I told myself every time the doubt crept in.

"I can't wait to see you," I said.

Then I heard it. A woman's voice in the background. Soft. Lilting. Almost musical.

Chandler glanced to the side. "Yeah, just leave it on the counter," he called out. Then back to me. "Sorry. That's Novah. My mentee from work. She's dropping off some documents."

"Oh," I said. My chest tightened. "This late?"

"We had a deadline thing," he said. He waved a hand like it was nothing. "You know how it is."

I did know how it was. I had worked late a thousand times. I had been the one dropping off documents. But something about the voice — the ease of it, the familiarity — made my skin prickle.

"Right," I said. I kept my face smooth. "Well, I should finish packing."

"I'll pick you up at the airport tomorrow," he said. "I love you."

"Love you too."

I hung up. I stared at the screen for a long time. Then I opened my calendar and changed my flight. I booked an earlier one. I would arrive a full day ahead of schedule.

I told myself it was because I was excited. I told myself I wanted to surprise him.

I didn't tell myself the truth.

The next afternoon, I stood outside Chandler's building in downtown LA with two suitcases and a carry-on bag. The sun was bright and hot. It felt like a different planet compared to New York. I pulled out the spare key he had mailed me three months ago. He had included a note: *Use this whenever you want. Mi casa es su casa.*

I rode the elevator up to the twelfth floor. My hands were steady. I unlocked the door and stepped inside.

The apartment was quiet. His shoes were by the door. His jacket was draped over a chair. He was home.

I set my bags down and walked toward the bedroom. The door was half-open. I could hear movement inside. Soft rustling. The sound of drawers opening and closing.

I pushed the door open.

Novah Cruz was standing in front of Chandler's dresser, folding his laundry.

She looked up. Her eyes went wide. She had the kind of face that belonged in a skincare ad — dewy skin, big eyes, a small mouth that formed a perfect O of surprise.

"Oh," she said. Her voice was exactly as I remembered it from the call. Soft. Lilting. "You must be Margo."

I stared at her. She was holding one of Chandler's T-shirts. She set it down carefully, like she had been caught doing something she shouldn't. But her expression wasn't guilty. It was curious. Almost amused.

"Chandler mentions you sometimes," she added.

Sometimes.

The word hit me like a slap. Not often. Not all the time. Sometimes.

I opened my mouth to respond, but then I saw it. On the dresser. A small stack of folded clothes. And next to it, a hair tie. Pink. Definitely not mine.

I looked back at Novah. She was watching me. Waiting.

"I'm his girlfriend," I said. My voice came out calm. Steady. "We've been together five years."

"Oh, I know," she said. She smiled. It didn't reach her eyes. "He talks about you."

Sometimes.

I turned and walked out of the bedroom. I went to the kitchen. I needed water. I needed air. I needed to think.

I opened the cabinet to grab a glass. And that's when I saw them.

Two matching tumblers. Stainless steel. Engraved.

One had a "C."

The other had an "N."

I stood there. Staring. My hand was still on the cabinet door.

Behind me, I heard the front door open. Chandler's voice. Bright. Surprised.

"Margo? You're here early!"

I closed the cabinet. I turned around. He was standing in the doorway, holding his briefcase. His face was caught between delight and panic.

Novah appeared behind him. She looked at him. Then at me. Then back at him.

"I thought I'd surprise you," I said.

Chandler set his briefcase down. He walked over and kissed my cheek. "This is amazing," he said. "I'm so glad you're here."

"I met Novah," I said.

"Oh. Yeah." He glanced back at her. "She was just — we had some work stuff."

"She was folding your laundry," I said.

His face shifted. Just slightly. "She offered. I had a crazy week. She was being nice."

I looked at Novah. She smiled at me. Sweet. Innocent.

"I should go," she said. "I'll see you at work, Chandler."

She walked past me. I smelled her perfume. Something floral. Expensive.

Chandler closed the door behind her. He turned back to me. "I'm sorry about that. I didn't know she'd still be here."

"It's fine," I said.

He pulled me into a hug. I stood there. My arms at my sides.

"I saw the tumblers," I said.

He pulled back. "What?"

"In the cabinet. The matching ones. C and N."

His face went blank for half a second. Then he laughed. "Oh. Those. That was a team-building thing. The whole office got them. Bulk order. Everyone's initials."

"Everyone?"

"Yeah. It was this company morale thing. Kind of cheesy, honestly."

I looked at him. His eyes were steady. His smile was easy.

He was lying.

I knew it. I felt it in my bones.

But I smiled back. "That's cute," I said.

I opened the cabinet. I took out the tumblers. I looked at them. Then I put them back. Exactly where I found them.

"I'm going to unpack," I said.

That night, I lay beside him in the dark. He fell asleep quickly. He always did.

I stayed awake. I watched him. His phone was on the nightstand, screen down.

Around midnight, it buzzed. Once. Twice. Three times.

Chandler stirred. He reached for it. He pulled it under the covers.

I closed my eyes. I kept my breathing slow. Steady.

Through my lashes, I watched the glow of the screen light up his face.

He was texting someone. His thumbs moved fast. He smiled.

I saw a notification preview before he swiped it away.

Novah: *She doesn't deserve you. You know that, right?*

My heart cracked. Quietly. Completely.

I didn't move. I didn't cry. I didn't say a word.

I waited until he set the phone down. Until his breathing slowed again.

Then I pulled out my own phone. I opened my Notes app.
