My Chef Husband Gave Our Recipes to His Mistress Chapter 1

I woke up at five-thirty on our anniversary. The apartment was still dark. Damien's side of the bed was empty, sheets barely wrinkled. He'd come home late again. I heard him stumble in around two, smelled the wine and kitchen smoke on him as he collapsed into bed without saying a word.

I slipped out quietly and went to the kitchen. Today I was making the first meal I ever cooked for him. Braised short ribs with root vegetables and fresh herbs. It took me three buses to get to the farmers market yesterday. I'd been saving money for weeks, skimming a few dollars here and there from the grocery budget. The meat cost forty-two dollars. The heirloom carrots were eight. I carried everything home in canvas bags that cut into my shoulders.

I set the ribs in my cracked Le Creuset pot. The one I'd had since before we got married. The handle was loose. I'd wired it back on myself last year. There was a hairline crack along the rim that I covered with my thumb when I poured. Damien said he'd replace it. That was eighteen months ago.

I browned the meat slowly, the way Grandma taught me. Low heat, patience, watching for the moment the surface caramelized just right. The smell filled the kitchen. I remembered the first time I made this for Damien. We were dating then. He'd come to my tiny apartment after a double shift at the restaurant where he was working garde manger. I wanted to impress him. I used Grandma's recipe, the one she'd written in the margins of her journal with a note: *For when you want someone to feel loved.*

He'd taken one bite and closed his eyes. When he opened them, they were wet. "Maren," he'd said. "This is the best thing I've ever tasted."

I thought about that a lot. How he used to look at me.

I added the vegetables and the broth. Set the temperature low. Covered the pot. It would take six hours. I set the table while it cooked. Used the good plates, the ones we got as wedding gifts and never touched. Folded cloth napkins. Put out wine glasses.

Then I saw the magazine.

It was lying on the counter. *Seattle Metropolitan Magazine*. Damien's face on the cover, arms crossed, standing in front of his restaurant's open kitchen. The headline read: **SEATTLE'S CULINARY GENIUS: How Damien White Became the West Coast's Hottest Chef.**

I picked it up. My hands were still damp from washing the vegetables. I opened to the feature story.

There were photos of Damien in his chef's whites. Damien plating a dish with tweezers. Damien laughing with his sous chef, Skyler Vasquez, both of them leaning over a cutting board. She was young, maybe twenty-six. Long dark hair, sharp cheekbones, the kind of face that photographed well. In the picture, she was smiling at him. He was smiling back.

I started reading.

*Damien White's meteoric rise in the Pacific Northwest culinary scene has been nothing short of extraordinary. But the secret to his success, he says, isn't just talent—it's partnership.*

*"I owe everything to my creative collaboration with Skyler Vasquez," White explains, gesturing to his sous chef, who's prepping mise en place beside him. "She understands flavor on an instinctual level. We finish each other's sentences in the kitchen. It's like we share a brain."*

I kept reading. Four pages. Interviews with food critics. A timeline of Damien's awards. A sidebar about his "signature dishes"—dishes I had taught him to make, step by step, in our apartment kitchen, using recipes from Grandma's journal.

My name appeared zero times.

Not in the body text. Not in the photo credits. Not in the acknowledgments section at the end.

I read it again. Slower this time. Looking for my name. Looking for any mention of the five years I gave him. The restaurant I closed. The recipes I handed over. The techniques I taught him at midnight after his shifts, when he'd come home frustrated and I'd show him how to fix his knife work, his timing, his sauces.

Nothing.

I set the magazine face-down on the counter. My chest felt tight. I went back to the stove and stirred the pot. The broth was simmering perfectly. I adjusted the heat and covered it again.

I waited at the table. Six o'clock came. Then seven. Then eight.

I texted him. *Dinner's ready. Are you coming home?*

No reply.

I sat there with the braised short ribs getting cold. The carrots going soft. The garnish wilting under the kitchen light. I'd made fresh gremolata, chopped by hand. It was turning brown at the edges.

At eleven-thirty, I heard my phone buzz. A text from Damien.

*Sorry babe. Got stuck at a tasting event. Don't wait up.*

I looked at the cold plate in front of me. At the wine I'd poured and not touched. At the folded napkins.

I stood up. Picked up both plates. Walked to the trash can and scraped everything in. The meat, the vegetables, the gremolata. It hit the bottom of the garbage bag with a wet, heavy sound.

I washed the plates. Dried them. Put them back in the cabinet.

Then I went to bed.

Damien came home at two-fifteen. I heard him in the hallway, fumbling with his keys. He didn't turn on the lights. He slid into bed beside me, smelling like wine and someone else's perfume.

I lay there in the dark with my eyes open.

Something inside me had gone very, very quiet.
