Chapter 1

The moonlight streamed through the office windows as I hunched over my desk, finalizing the details for tomorrow's ceremony. Ten years. Ten years of devotion, sacrifice, and love had led to this moment—our official Mating and Luna Ceremony. I traced my fingers over the elaborate invitations I'd designed myself, each one addressed by hand to every member of the Silverfang Pack.

"Just a few more hours of work," I whispered to myself, "and then everything will be perfect."

My wolf, Luna, stirred weakly inside me. *We deserve this, Hazel. After all we've done for him.*

I smiled, though it felt strained. Luna had never been strong—another reminder of my status as a Late Bloomer. But Declan had promised that once we completed our marking ceremony, our wolves would sync and mine would grow stronger.

The clock on the wall read 11:42 PM. Declan had texted earlier saying he was handling "pack business" and would meet me later. I'd accepted it without question, as I always did. The Alpha's work never ended, especially with a ceremony approaching.

I reached for another stack of papers when voices drifted through the partially open door to the adjacent room—Declan's private office.

"—never had a proper celebration, Isabel. It's not right." Declan's voice was soft, almost tender in a way I hadn't heard directed at me in years.

"But Alpha, I don't want to cause any trouble," came Isabel's breathy reply. "Especially with the Luna ceremony so close."

I froze, my pen hovering over the paper.

"Nonsense," Declan said firmly. "Your first shift is a major milestone. Every pack member should witness it properly."

My stomach tightened. Isabel had shifted last week—a week after her eighteenth birthday. As an Omega, her late shift wasn't unusual, but as Declan's personal assistant, she'd quickly become... important to him.

"I just feel so special when you look out for me like this," Isabel whispered.

"You're part of our pack now," Declan replied, his tone carrying that protective edge that made my chest ache. "I promised to take care of you."

Luna whined softly inside me. *He used to say that to us.*

I forced myself to focus on my work, but the words blurred before my eyes.

---

The following evening, I stood in the doorway of the main hall, my heart sinking with each passing second.

"What's going on?" I asked Elena, my best friend and the pack's Healer, who stood beside me with wide eyes.

"I... I don't know," she stammered. "There wasn't any announcement about a party tonight."

Before us, the hall was transformed. Streamers hung from the ceiling, music blared from speakers, and pack members crowded every available space. At the center of it all stood Declan, his arm around Isabel's waist as she beamed up at him in her new dress—one I'd never seen before.

"Surprise!" Declan announced, his voice carrying over the crowd. "Tonight, we celebrate Isabel's successful shift and welcome her properly to the Silverfang Pack!"

Applause erupted around us. I remained frozen, my fingers clutching the doorframe.

"Hazel," Elena whispered, "are you okay? You look pale."

I couldn't answer. The room was too full, too loud, too many dominant wolves with their overwhelming auras pressing against my sensitive senses. My chest began to tighten.

"Declan," I called weakly, but my voice was lost in the noise.

He didn't see me. He was too busy presenting Isabel to the pack elders, his hand resting possessively on the small of her back.

The air grew thinner. Black spots danced at the edges of my vision as I tried to breathe through the panic rising in my throat.

"Need... to get out," I gasped.

But there was nowhere to go. Wolves surrounded me on all sides, their scents mingling and suffocating me. I caught a glimpse of Declan laughing, his eyes never once searching for me in the crowd.

My knees buckled.

"Hazel!" Elena's voice sounded distant as darkness crept into my vision.

I collapsed to the floor, my lungs refusing to work properly. Through the haze of my panic attack, I saw Declan's head turn toward the commotion—saw his eyes widen as he noticed me on the ground.

For one desperate moment, I thought he would come for me.

Instead, he turned back to Isabel, who had placed a delicate hand on her chest in mock distress.

"Are you okay?" he asked her, his voice carrying to where I lay. "The crowd startled you?"

"It's just so overwhelming," Isabel whispered back, leaning into him.

I watched through increasingly blurry vision as Declan pulled her closer, murmuring reassurances into her hair while my body shut down from the sensory overload.

Elena's arms wrapped around me as she tried to lift me. "I've got you," she whispered fiercely. "Let's get you somewhere safe."

As she carried me from the room, I caught one last glimpse of Declan—still holding Isabel, still not looking for me—and something inside me finally broke beyond repair.

Chapter 2

I woke to the sterile scent of antiseptic and the steady beep of monitors. The pack clinic's white ceiling swam into focus above me, and for one blissful moment, I didn't remember why I was here.

Then it all crashed back—the party, the crowd, Declan's arms around Isabel while I collapsed on the floor.

"Hazel?" Elena's voice came from beside me. She'd fallen asleep in the chair, her healer's robe rumpled. "How are you feeling?"

I tried to sit up, but dizziness forced me back down. "Like I've been trampled by a herd of elk."

Elena's eyes filled with concern. "Your panic attack was severe. Your wolf couldn't handle the stress."

Luna whimpered inside me, weak and distressed. *He didn't come for us.*

"No," I whispered, the truth settling like ice in my veins. "He didn't."

Elena took my hand. "Hazel, you need to rest. We can talk about—"

"There's nothing to talk about." The words surprised us both with their firmness. "There never was a true mate bond between us."

The realization hit me with stunning clarity. Ten years of devotion, of excuses, of believing Declan's promises that our wolves would sync after the marking ceremony. All lies.

"I'm done," I said, my voice steadier than I expected. "I'm done being his convenient supporter, his unpaid assistant, his placeholder Luna."

Elena's grip tightened. "Hazel, are you sure? Tomorrow's your ceremony."

"Exactly." I pushed myself up, ignoring the room's spin. "And I won't be there."

---

The pack house was silent at 3 AM. I moved through the shadows of what had been my home for a decade, a single suitcase in hand.

My fingers trailed over the Luna ceremonial dress hanging on my closet door—ivory silk with silver embroidery, months of work and hope stitched into every seam. I'd designed it myself, imagining how it would feel to wear it while Declan marked me as his forever.

"Goodbye," I whispered, leaving it behind.

I packed only what mattered—clothes, a few books, the small wooden box containing my mother's jewelry. Everything else could stay. Everything else had been for a life that was never truly mine.

Luna stirred restlessly. *We're really leaving?*

"Yes," I answered silently. *We deserve better.*

The main hall was dark, but I could still see the remnants of Isabel's party—streamers hanging limply from the ceiling, empty glasses on tables. In less than twenty-four hours, this space was meant to host my ceremony.

Instead, I'd be gone.

I slipped out the side door and into the cool night air. No one saw me leave. No one came after me.

---

My friend Sarah's apartment was small but safe. She'd let me crash on her couch without questions, though her worried glances said everything.

"I need to check something," I said, reaching for my phone.

Sarah nodded. "The pack's probably wondering where you are."

"They can wonder." I opened the Crescent Moon Social app—our local werewolf network—and stared at the blank status box.

What could I possibly say? *After a decade of devotion, I just walked away from my chosen mate*? *I'm currently homeless and heartbroken*?

A strange, bitter laugh bubbled up from my chest.

*Taking applications for a new Alpha groom. Serious inquiries only.*

I typed the words before I could think better of them, adding a single winking emoji at the end.

"There," I muttered, setting the phone down. "Let them think I've lost my mind."

Sarah raised an eyebrow. "That's... bold."

"It's either that or crying into my pillow." I forced a smile. "And I'm tired of crying."

The phone buzzed almost immediately. I expected Elena or maybe Ryan, Declan's Beta, coming to drag me back.

Instead, a private message from a name I hadn't seen in years popped up.

*Callan Spencer*

My heart stuttered. Callan Spencer—Alpha of the Blood Moon Pack. My childhood friend. The boy who'd pulled my pigtails and called me "Hazel-Nut" before we'd grown apart.

*Application submitted. Where are you?*

I stared at the screen, my finger hovering over the reply button. Through the years, I'd heard stories of him—how he'd built the Blood Moon Pack from nothing, how formidable he'd become.

Why would he respond to my silly post?

And why did his simple words send a shiver down my spine?

Luna suddenly perked up, more alert than she'd been in days. *Something's different.*

I didn't know what to reply. Where was I? What did I want? Everything had changed in the span of a single night.

But as I looked at Callan's message again, something stirred inside me—something I hadn't felt in years.

Hope.

Chapter 3

The night air carried a chill as I paced outside Sarah's apartment building. My phone buzzed with another notification—Callan Spencer was at the Silverfang Pack borders. I hadn't expected him to arrive so quickly.

"Are you sure about this?" Sarah asked, her eyes wide with concern.

"I'm not sure about anything anymore," I admitted. "But I need to know."

The drive to the border took fifteen minutes, but my heart raced as if I'd run the entire way. What was I doing? Had I lost my mind, posting that ridiculous message?

And yet, something pulled me forward—a strange tug I couldn't explain.

When I arrived, he was waiting. Tall, broad-shouldered, with dark hair that caught the moonlight. Even from a distance, his presence commanded attention.

"Hazel," he said, his voice deeper than I remembered.

"Callan." My voice came out steadier than I felt. "You didn't have to come all this way."

"I had to." His eyes never left mine as he stepped closer.

That's when it hit me—his scent. Pine and petrichor—the earthy smell of rain on dry soil. It enveloped me like a forgotten memory suddenly recalled.

Luna surged forward so violently I gasped. *Mate. Our mate.*

My knees weakened as my wolf, dormant for so long, suddenly roared to life inside me. She clawed at my consciousness, desperate to reach Callan.

"Hazel?" His voice was urgent, concerned. He'd stopped several feet away, respecting my space even as his eyes flashed with recognition.

"You feel it too," I whispered.

He nodded slowly. "I've been waiting for you."

The words hung between us, heavy with meaning. Waiting for me? All these years?

"How is this possible?" I asked. "We've known each other since we were pups."

"Some bonds are worth waiting for." His voice was gentle, but I could hear the Alpha underneath—controlled power that made my wolf purr with approval.

"I need to get you somewhere safe," he said. "Somewhere quiet."

I nodded, unable to form words as Luna continued to circle inside me, finally awake after years of weakness.

---

Morning light filtered through unfamiliar curtains. I sat on the edge of a plush bed in what appeared to be a guest apartment in Blood Moon territory. Callan had been nothing but respectful, arranging this space for me without pressure or demands.

But I knew what I had to do.

I closed my eyes and reached for the pack mind-link that still connected me to Silverfang.

*Declan.* I pushed my thoughts through the link, feeling his surprise at my contact.

*Hazel.* His response was cold, controlled. *This little tantrum is beneath you.*

*I'm not coming back.* The words flowed easier than I expected. *Our chosen mate tie is severed.*

His anger flooded the link, hot and sudden. *You're being ridiculous. Where are you?*

*That doesn't matter.* I kept my mental voice steady despite Luna's growls. *What matters is that I'm done.*

*Your weak wolf needs me,* he snarled. *You'll come crawling back when you realize what you've thrown away.*

I could almost see him—pacing his office, Alpha aura flaring with indignation that anyone would dare reject him.

*Goodbye, Declan.*

I severed the link with a decisive snap, blocking his furious attempts to reopen it.

---

The pack mind-link hummed with activity later that afternoon. I'd forgotten to block the general channel in my haste to settle in.

"Attention everyone!" Isabel's voice rang through the link, sweet and smug. "Alpha Declan has graciously invited me to move into the Alpha's private guest floor!"

My stomach clenched as Luna snarled in disgust.

"The Alpha feels I need special protection," she continued, her mental voice dripping with false innocence. "He says I'm too valuable to the pack to risk anything happening to me."

I could practically see her preening as pack members responded with congratulations and questions.

"Isn't that where Hazel used to stay?" someone asked.

"Oh yes," Isabel replied, her satisfaction evident. "But Alpha Declan says I need more care and attention than she ever did."

I blocked the channel with a savage mental push, cutting off her chatter.

"She's not worth your energy," Callan's voice came from the doorway. He leaned against the frame, watching me with those intense eyes.

"How did you know?" I asked.

"I heard." He stepped into the room, his movements controlled but predatory. "Word travels fast between packs."

"She's moving into your space," he added, his voice dangerously soft.

I met his gaze steadily. "It's not my space anymore."

Something flickered in his eyes—approval, perhaps. Or something deeper.

"No," he agreed. "You have a new space now."

Luna stirred restlessly inside me, drawn to his presence like a moth to flame.

"And what exactly does that mean?" I whispered.

His smile was slow and confident. "It means, Hazel Reed, that your life is about to change in ways you never imagined."
