After My Alpha Betrayed Me for the Pack’s Heiress Chapter 1

I opened the door to the Luna quarters at 2:17 on a Thursday afternoon and walked straight into the smell of my own marriage ending.

Sterling had Nyla curled against his chest on the chaise by the window. His mouth was at the curve of her neck. Not a kiss. Worse. The slow, deliberate drag of lips and breath that werewolves only ever spend on a mate—scent-marking, the gesture that says mine to every wolf within scenting range. His cedar-and-iron smell was already laid down on her skin in layers, the way snow stacks.

My mark went cold first. Then empty. Like a door closing in a room I had never been allowed to enter.

"Sterling."

My hands were shaking. My voice wasn't. Three years of being Luna in this pack taught me which one mattered.

He lifted his head slowly. He did not move Nyla off his lap. Her wet, careful eyes found mine over his shoulder, and I watched her face arrange itself into the exact shape of injured surprise.

"Riley." Sterling's tone was patient. It was the patience he used on warriors who asked questions during briefings. "You're interrupting."

"You're scent-marking her."

"I'm comforting my sister's ward."

"With your mouth on her neck."

His eyes flickered gold.

I felt the bond open between us, not the warm channel it was supposed to be but a tight, hot wire pulled taut. His voice came down it instead of through the air.

*Never question my protection of family again.*

The Alpha tone hit my body before I understood the words. My jaw locked. My throat sealed. My knees wanted to fold and my spine forced them not to, and somewhere inside that battle I felt the mark on my neck flare like a brand pressed twice.

Something deep in my chest—something I had stopped believing was alive—snarled.

It was the first sound she had ever made.

Sterling stood. Nyla slid down his body in a long, practiced motion and tucked herself behind his shoulder. He walked past me without looking back. The door clicked shut. I stayed where I was, my thumbnail driving a half-moon into the inside of my opposite wrist, and I listened to that snarl underneath my ribs settle into a low, steady vibration that did not stop for hours.

*Sable,* something whispered inside me, in a voice I had never heard before. *My name is Sable. I am not dead. I am waiting.*

I read pack law until dawn.

---

The claw marks appeared on Nyla's forearm the next morning. Four neat parallel lines, the kind a she-wolf makes when she rakes her own skin in front of a mirror and then waits ten minutes for the blood to look convincing.

She wept beautifully in the great hall. She named me.

Sterling did not open the bond link to check. He did not ask me a single question. He stood on the dais in front of his assembled warriors and said, "Luna Riley will kneel outside the pack house for three hours. Barefoot. As public penance."

The command came down the bond before my mind finished hearing it out loud. My knees buckled. My feet were already moving toward the door.

The blizzard took me at the threshold.

I knelt in snow up to my thighs in a thin indoor shift. The warriors lined the porch and looked at the trees. Nyla watched from the heated window above, her bandaged arm cradled against her chest, and I could see the small private curve of her mouth from forty feet away.

Forty minutes in, the cramping started.

I had not told Sterling yet. I had been waiting for a quiet evening, the right hour. The healer had only confirmed it last week. *Eight weeks along,* she had said, smiling, the first smile anyone in Ironveil had given me in months.

The blood came twenty minutes after the cramps. Dark. Unmistakable. I felt the pup leave me in a long, tearing wave, and I clawed at the bond with everything I had to make Sterling feel it—to make him know, to make him come—

The link was sealed from his side. A wall of nothing where my mate should have been.

He was in the healer's quarters. Holding Nyla's hand while a scratch was bandaged.

I bent forward over my own thighs in the red snow and I did not scream, because the command had sealed my throat for three hours and I had no voice to spend. Sable pressed against the chemical ceiling inside me and held me upright from the inside while my body emptied itself.

She recorded everything. I felt her doing it.

When the command released at the third hour, I fell sideways into the drift. A small, fierce shape moved out of a side door and a pair of thin, strong arms hooked under mine.

"Up," Marlee said into my ear. "Now. Before anyone remembers to look."

---

The storage room behind the kitchens smelled like flour and bleach. Marlee laid me on a folded tarp and called the healer with the words *routine wellness check* and a stare that did not blink. He came. He documented. He wrote down the words *spontaneous fetal loss, second month, exposure-induced* in his careful, terrified handwriting, and then his hands started shaking and he reached for the paper to tear it.

Marlee took it out from under his fingers before he finished the motion.

He left without speaking.

She folded the report into a square no bigger than a playing card and slid it inside a waterproof pouch I had not known she owned. Then she pressed a small glass vial into my palm and closed my fingers around it.

"Keep taking these," she said. "Don't ask me why yet."

I looked at the vial. Wolfsbane. The same suppressant the pack healer had quietly prescribed me for years, for a wolf everyone agreed was too weak to ever rise.

Marlee had never once been wrong about what I needed to survive.

I swallowed the dose dry. Inside my chest, Sable went very, very still—the stillness of a wolf who has just understood she is being hidden on purpose.

Above us, somewhere in the pack house, a door opened and Sterling's voice carried down the hall, smooth and certain, asking someone where his Luna had gone.
