My Alpha Let Our Daughter Die Chapter 1

Twenty-one days without a word from him, and the first thing I heard when I walked back through Ironvale's front doors was laughter coming from a wing I was never invited into.

I still had dirt from Cascadia under my nails. I'd buried Lilly alone, no pack escort, no Alpha beside me, just Dr. Voss and a hole in the ground too small for how big she'd felt in my arms. The last empty antidote vial was in my coat pocket, and I hadn't let go of it since.

The corridors still knew me. I'd walked them as Luna for ten years. But the sound pulling me now — champagne glasses, a child's giggle, Gideon's low, proud voice — came from behind a door that had never once been open to me.

I pushed it open.

Gideon stood at the center of the room, a toddler boy braced on his hip, already walking, already talking, months past infancy, glowing with the kind of health Lilly never got to have. Raven Cooper stood beside him in deep crimson, and on her neck, faded but unmistakably real, sat a mate-mark.

The warriors. The ranked wolves. Allies I'd stood beside at treaty tables for a decade. All of them watching with the ease of people who'd kept a secret so long it had stopped feeling like one.

My own mark went ice-cold the instant my eyes found Raven's throat. Something inside me tore — a thin, ragged sound, like a wolf clawing at a door it had forgotten it owned. Every wolf in the room lifted their head. They smelled it on me before I understood it myself.

Gideon saw me. His jaw went tight. He didn't move. He didn't say my name. The boy reached up and grabbed Raven's hand, and Raven looked at me across the room and did not look away.

"Explain this," I said. Flat. Controlled. The voice I use when I'm holding something too large to drop.

Gideon set the boy down slowly. "Dr. Voss's mind-link came through during a mating-run," he said, chillingly even. "I didn't answer it. I was with Raven. I couldn't be interrupted." He let that sit. "Your place was always what I assigned it, Savannah."

Then his voice dropped into the Alpha tone, a pressure like hands closing around my throat. "Kneel."

Every gaze in the room dropped to the floor. Mine didn't.

Something impossible happened inside my chest — my wolf, chemically silent for years, screamed. The mark on my neck split, a hairline crack tearing through old scar tissue, and blood traced a thin line down my collarbone. The room went dead silent. For one unguarded second, Gideon's eyes flickered — fear, before he buried it.

I took the empty vial from my pocket and set it on the ceremony table, between him and his healthy son.

"Your daughter died with this empty in her hand," I said. "Remember that."

I walked out. Not stumbling. Not running. Beta Marcus fell into step behind me, ashen-faced, his mouth working like he wanted to speak and couldn't — bound, I realized, by some command Gideon had given him long ago.

Dr. Fiona Marsh was already in the exam room when I arrived, and Dr. Elara Voss was with her, a locked case at her feet I recognized — Lilly's file.

"I want a bond-severance ritual," I said. "Tonight."

Fiona and Elara exchanged a look that stopped me cold.

"Sit," Fiona said quietly.

Her gloved hands worked at the cracked mark, peeling back skin layer by layer, and I watched the color drain out of her face with each one. When she finally spoke, it was barely above a whisper.

"This isn't a bond mark, Savannah. It's a forgery. Wolfsbane, layered — deliberate. Chemically precise." She looked up at me. "There's nothing here to sever. You were never bonded to him."

Elara's hands were shaking as she set Lilly's file down. "Your wolf's been poisoned into dormancy for over a decade," she said. "You were never legally Luna. You were never—" She stopped herself. "You need to leave this pack tonight, or your wolf won't survive the week."

The room tilted, then steadied. My eyes went flat.

I raised my hand to my own throat. My nails were already lengthening into claws I hadn't shifted in ten years, hovering an inch above the cracked, bleeding mark.

Fiona's breath caught. "Savannah — wait—"

I didn't.
