Chapter 1

I should have knocked.

That's the thought that keeps surfacing, even now, even as I stand in the doorway of the Alpha suite with my hand pressed flat against my belly. I should have knocked. But this is my home. He is my mate. The mark on my neck has been there for over a year. I stopped knocking on my own doors a long time ago.

The scent hits me before anything else does.

His musk — warm cedar and dark earth, the scent that once made my wolf press forward with hunger — tangled with something floral and sharp. Something I have known my whole life. Jasmine soap and the particular sweetness of my sister's skin.

Sabrina's hands are in Dallas's hair.

His face is buried against her neck.

I don't move. I don't scream. My wolf slams into my ribs so hard I nearly stagger, but I plant my feet and I stand there, and I press my palm against the swell of my belly where his heir is kicking, and I wait for them to notice me.

Sabrina sees me first. Her eyes open over his shoulder, and for one fraction of a second I see her true face — the satisfaction in it, clean and cold and triumphant, like a woman who has been waiting years for exactly this moment.

Then Dallas pulls back. He turns around.

He doesn't flinch. That's what destroys something in me — not the embrace, not Sabrina's expression, but the complete, absolute absence of shame on his face.

"Evelyn." His voice is calm. Almost bored.

"Get out," I say to Sabrina.

Neither of them moves.

I open my mouth to say something else — something I haven't yet decided — and Dallas's Alpha tone hits me like a hand around my throat. Not loud. Not violent. Just there, sudden and total, pressing my voice flat, locking the words behind my teeth. I have felt his tone before, in pack meetings, directed at Deltas who stepped out of line. Never at me. Never at his Luna.

My wolf goes absolutely feral.

But she is five months tired and I am five months heavy and Dallas is already speaking inside my head through the mind-link, and his voice there is worse than the tone — because it is quiet, and measured, and it sounds like a man delivering a business summary.

*You were selected for your bloodline. A strong-blooded heir requires a strong-blooded vessel. That's what you were chosen for. Nothing more.*

The mate bond on my neck ignites. Not the warm pull I've always known — something else, something that feels like the mark itself is trying to crawl off my skin.

*Once the pup is born, Sabrina will take her place as my true Luna. The heir will be raised here, in this pack. You will be — accommodated.*

Accommodated.

I press two fingers against my wrist and feel my own pulse. Fast. Uneven. I focus on it.

Sabrina is watching from behind him with her hands folded, her expression arranged into something that might fool anyone who hadn't grown up watching her construct faces for an audience. Her eyes are soft. Her chin is slightly dipped. She looks like a woman who is sorry for something she is not remotely sorry for.

I leave without a word. Dallas lets me.

That night, I lie on my side in a guest room I moved into without telling anyone why, and I put my hand on my belly, and I talk to the pup. I tell them about the mountains. I tell them their father has a pack that will protect them. I don't tell them what he said. They kick twice, slow and steady, and I count the kicks in the dark until I fall asleep.

Three days later, Sabrina corners me on the upper landing.

I know she's been waiting for an opportunity. I know it, and I still turn around when she calls my name, because she is my sister and some part of me has not yet learned that this particular war has no ceasefire.

"You should leave," she says. Her voice is gentle. That's the knife edge — always the gentleness. "I'm telling you this because I still care about you. It would be easier for everyone."

"Easier," I repeat.

"Dallas has made his choice. You staying here only makes things—"

"Don't." I take a step toward the stairs. "Don't stand here and pretend this is kindness."

Her expression shifts. Just for a second. Just long enough.

She shoves me with both hands.

The world tips. The railing isn't there, or my hand misses it, and then I am falling — the hardwood steps brutal and fast against my shoulder, my hip, the back of my skull — and I hit the floor below with a sound I feel rather than hear, a crunch that is my own body failing, and then the pain comes in a wave so enormous it has no edges.

I howl through the mind-link. Not words. Just the raw, animal sound of a wolf whose body is breaking, screaming across the bond with everything she has left.

*Dallas. Dallas. Please.*

He appears at the top of the stairs.

He looks at me.

I am on the cold floor of our pack house, soaked in blood I can feel but cannot see, and the pup isn't kicking anymore, and Dallas stands there above me and looks at me the way you look at something that has become inconvenient.

Sabrina is hyperventilating behind him. One hand pressed to her chest. Her breath coming in theatrical, wrenching gasps.

Dallas turns away from me.

He scoops Sabrina up.

The pack healer arrives at a run, skidding to her knees beside me, and over her head I watch Dallas carry my sister down the hall. He doesn't look back. His voice drifts to me like smoke.

*"Deal with the mess."*

The healer's hands are on my face. Her eyes are bright with something that might be horror or might be fury — it's hard to tell, in my current condition, with the world narrowing down to a grey tunnel at the edges.

"Stay with me," she says. "Evelyn. Stay with me."

I'm not sure I want to.

But my wolf — barely a flicker now, barely a heartbeat — makes a decision before I do.

"I need you to do something," I hear myself say. My voice is strange. Too far away. "I need you to let me die."

Chapter 2

I don't remember the drive out of Ironclad territory.

I remember the healer's hands — cold, steady, slick with my blood — pressing the syringe into the soft skin inside my elbow. I remember the way the paralytic moved through me like cold water filling a glass, and how I thought, for one strange second, that maybe I was actually dying after all and she had decided to be merciful in a different way.

I remember the howling outside. The rogue attack on the eastern border. The chaos that gave her the cover she needed.

I remember reaching up to my own neck — to the mark Dallas put there — and tearing.

Not with my hands. With whatever was left of my wolf. The bond severed in a single, wrenching pull, and the pain of it was so total that for a long time afterward I could not tell which part of me had screamed.

Then there was a road. A truck bed. A blanket that smelled like diesel.

Then there was nothing for a long time.

The Shadowveil intake room has no windows.

It is small and grey and smells of antiseptic and pine — the pine I will later learn is the disinfectant they use on the cot frames, not anything alive — and the woman across the desk from me has her sleeves pushed up to her elbows and a clipboard balanced on her knee.

"Vital signs are stable," she says. She is not speaking to me. She is reading aloud to her own notes. "Hemoglobin low. Soft tissue scarring at the cervical mark site, consistent with self-severance. Wolf signature reads — " She pauses. Her pen taps once against the clipboard. "Flatline."

I sit very still in the metal chair.

She lifts her eyes. They are dark, unsentimental, and they assess me the way I will later learn to assess a body on a triage table — not for who I am, but for what can still be salvaged.

"Do you have anything you want to tell me about that?" she asks.

"No."

"Family?"

"No."

"Pack?"

I press two fingers against my wrist pulse. Fast. Uneven. I focus on it.

"No."

She writes something down. She does not ask again.

"You'll be in the junior field triage unit. Bunk seventeen, west barracks. Survive the first month and we'll talk about training. Don't survive it and we won't." She sets the clipboard aside. "Anything you need before you're shown to your cot?"

I think about it.

The river stone is in my pocket. I do not know why I kept it. I put my hand around it through the fabric of pants that are not mine, and I shake my head once.

"No."

The west barracks is a long, low room with twelve cots on each side and one bare bulb burning at the far end. The other healers in my unit look up when I come in. They look at my neck. They look at my face. None of them say anything.

I lie down on bunk seventeen in my clothes.

I do not sleep. I do not cry. I lie on my side with my hand pressed flat against my stomach, and the stomach is empty, and I keep my hand there anyway because some animal part of me has not yet been told.

The first week passes that way.

I eat what they put in front of me because not eating draws attention. I run the morning drills because not running draws attention. I do not speak unless spoken to, and when spoken to, I answer in the fewest words the question requires. The other healers stop trying within four days. One of them — a tall woman with a scar that splits her eyebrow — watches me longer than the rest, and once, on the fifth night, she sets a tin cup of coffee on the floor by my bunk and walks away without a word.

I drink it after she's gone.

It is the first kindness I accept from anyone in five years' worth of nights to come.

Somewhere — and I will not learn this for years, not until the tribunal pulls it into the light — Dallas is making arrangements.

He does not grieve me. He rages. The pack believes he is locked in his study with the door bolted, mourning his Luna and his lost heir; in truth he is on the phone, in the dark, arranging a transfer of one packless she-wolf to a private rehabilitation facility in the foothills he quietly owns through three layers of corporate shell.

Sabrina goes willingly. She believes it is sanctuary. She believes it is the next stage of the plan.

The first month, he doesn't visit.

The second month, he comes at night. He sits across from her in a small white room with no decoration. He uses his Alpha tone — low, unhurried — and he forces her to walk him through the staircase. Step by step. Her hands on my back. The angle of the shove. The sound my body made when it hit the floor below.

When she is finished, he stands up and leaves without speaking again.

She sits very still after the door closes. Then she smooths the front of her gown with both hands, and she begins, quietly, to plan.

She has survived on manufactured helplessness her entire life. She is patient. She can wait.

The third year, the ceiling comes down.

We are in a bombed-out forestry station three ridges north of the Wyoming line, and the rogues have us pinned, and the Delta on my table has shrapnel in his abdomen and a femoral bleed I have approximately ninety seconds to find before he becomes someone I lose.

The ceiling fragments above me. Plaster dust falls into the open cavity. I cover the wound with my body and keep working.

My hands do not shake.

This is the thing I have learned about myself in three years here: my hands do not shake. They have not shaken since the night on the hardwood floor. Whatever broke in me that night broke a circuit somewhere between fear and fingers, and the result, in this work, is that I do not falter under fire. I find the bleed. I clamp it. I close him.

The rogues are driven back at some point. I don't notice when. By the time someone touches my shoulder and says my name, the Delta is breathing in long, even pulls, and I am sitting on the floor next to his litter with my hands red to the wrist and my back against a wall that is no longer entirely a wall.

The Shadowveil commander finds me there an hour later.

She does not say good work. She does not say thank you. She crouches in front of me, looks at the blood on my hands, and says, "Pack your kit. You're moving to the senior bunks tonight."

That is all.

That night, in a private room that is barely larger than a closet, I lie on a cot that is mine alone for the first time in three years, and something happens.

It is not large. It is not a flood. It is barely anything at all.

A warmth. A faint, silver warmth, curling at the edges of my consciousness like breath on cold glass.

My wolf.

Not awake. Not yet. Just — there. A coal that remembers it was once fire.

I press my fingers against my wrist pulse in the dark and I do not let myself cry. I have not let myself cry in three years and I am not going to start tonight, in a strange bunk, over a flicker that may not survive until morning.

But I lie awake until the bulb in the hallway clicks off at dawn, and I keep listening for her.

She is still there when the sun comes up.

She is very small. She is very quiet.

She is still there.

Chapter 3

Somewhere in the world, Dallas Jensen is rebuilding.

I know this the way I know most things now — not through the bond, which has been dead for three years, but through the quiet, reliable intelligence network of people who owe the Shadowveil Task Force favors. A contact in the Northwest Alliance sends a two-line message that I read once, standing in the doorway of the senior barracks at six in the morning with my coffee going cold in my hand.

*Jensen released the Wright woman from the private facility. They were seen together at the Ironclad alliance dinner. He's calling her his companion.*

I delete the message.

I drink the cold coffee.

The thing about survival — real survival, the kind you build bone by bone in rogue-war zones over years of work — is that it eventually stops being dramatic. Dallas releasing Sabrina is a chess move. I can read the shape of it from four states away: his pack alliances are fraying, his political image needs a prop, and Sabrina's manufactured fragility was always his favorite performance to be the audience for. She will stand at his side at dinners with her chin slightly dipped and her eyes soft, and the allied Alphas who never looked closely enough will see a grieving man finding comfort, and they will be sympathetic, and that sympathy will buy him another year of borrowed credibility.

I know exactly how the performance goes. I lived inside it without knowing I was in the cast.

Iris Shen appears beside me in the doorway, reads my face the way she has learned to read it over four years of shared trenches, and says nothing. She just leans against the frame and looks out at the grey Colorado morning with her hands wrapped around her own cup.

"Bad news?" she asks eventually.

"Background noise," I say.

She looks at me sideways. She has the specific scepticism of a woman who has watched me describe catastrophic femoral bleeds as *manageable* and ambushes as *inconvenient.* But she doesn't push. That is one of the reasons she is still someone I allow to stand next to me.

"Convoy debrief at zero eight hundred," she says instead. "Blizzard's moving in from the north. Command wants everyone staged before it hits."

"I'll be there."

She pushes off the doorframe and goes.

I stand there a moment longer, pressing two fingers against my wrist pulse — fast, even, controlled — and think about Sabrina smoothing the front of a silk dress in some alliance dining room, her face arranged into sorrow, Dallas's hand at the small of her back.

Then I put it down. I have surgery kits to check.

The blizzard comes faster than command predicted.

We are three ridges into Colorado high country when the first convoy vehicle hits black ice on a switchback and goes over the edge. I feel the impact before I see it — the shudder through the vehicle frame, the scream of metal, and then we are stopped and someone is shouting through the unit frequency about overturned vehicles and scattered casualties and rogue contacts moving through the tree line.

I am out of my vehicle before the door is fully open.

The snow is knee-deep and still falling, thick and sideways in the wind, and visibility drops to almost nothing past ten meters. I pull my kit and move toward the burning wreckage downslope, running through the mental triage list: casualties, access points, nearest cover. Someone behind me is returning fire at the tree line. Someone else is calling a position through the frequency. I block it all down to one task at a time the way I have learned to do — the way I had to learn to do, in that first year, when everything still felt like it was happening to someone else.

The lead vehicle is on its side against a boulder, the front cab fully alight.

I get three meters from it before the heat stops me.

There is someone inside. I can see movement through the cracked windshield — a hand, pressed flat against the glass, and then stillness. I try the door. It is buckled. I try it again. I look for another access point and find none and I stand in the snow with fire on my face and I think, with clinical clarity, *there has to be a way in.*

And then the scent hits me.

It comes through the smoke and the blood and the cold and the burning metal and it has no business being here, in this wreckage, in this blizzard — pine resin and winter smoke, clean and sharp and overwhelming, and it is not the vehicle burning, it is not anything I have smelled in four years of territory operations, and my wolf—

My wolf.

She doesn't stir. She doesn't flicker.

She *slams* awake.

Four years of dormancy, four years of barely-there embers and quiet, careful hope, and she comes back all at once like a door blowing open in a storm — and the word she sends up through me is not a word I choose, not something I decide, not something I could stop if I wanted to.

*Mate.*

I spin around.

He comes from the tree line at a dead run — a wolf the color of storm clouds, massive and moving with the specific terrible efficiency of something that has decided an outcome and is in the process of delivering it. He shifts mid-stride, the wolf giving way to a man who is all lean, controlled force, and he doesn't slow down at the burning vehicle, he doesn't calculate the access point, he simply drives both hands into the buckled door frame and *tears*.

Metal screams. The door gives.

He reaches inside and pulls someone out — a Delta, barely conscious, uniform scorched along one side — and sets him in the snow with a careful, practiced efficiency that tells me he has done this before, many times, in many burning places.

Then he straightens up and turns around.

And his eyes find me through the snow and the smoke as if there is nothing else to find.

I have never seen this man in my life.

My wolf knows every single thing about him.

He goes very still. Not the stillness of hesitation — something else. The stillness of a man who has just received news he was not expecting and is taking a single moment to let it land before he acts. His jaw is tight. His chest is moving in long, controlled pulls. And under the snow and the smoke and the blood I can smell him — pine and winter, clean and devastating — and every part of me that spent four years learning not to feel anything is making a catastrophic amount of noise.

He walks toward me.

He stops close. Not too close. Close enough that I can see his eyes are dark, and steady, and completely certain in a way that should frighten me but does not.

"You're hurt," he says. His voice is low. It carries under the wind.

I look down. There is blood on my sleeve from the door frame — a cut I do not remember getting. I look back up.

"It's minor," I say.

He looks at me for a long moment. His wolf is looking at me too — I can feel it, a presence at the edge of his eyes, enormous and dark and absolutely, overwhelmingly certain.

Then he unzips the outer layer of his tactical jacket and puts it around my shoulders.

Not a dramatic gesture. Not a performance. Just — a thing he does, quietly and without announcement, the way you do something you have already decided.

My wolf presses forward so hard that my knees nearly give out.

I am standing in a blizzard with blood on my sleeve and fire at my back and casualties in the snow around me, and for the first time in four years — four years of hardwood floors and grey intake rooms and bombed-out ceilings and cold coffee drunk in doorways — I feel, in the precise center of my chest, something that is not armor.

It scares me more than the fire did.

My eyes burn.

I don't cry. I haven't cried in four years and I am not going to cry now, in the snow, in front of a man whose name I don't yet know—

But my wolf is four years old in this moment, new and raw and certain, and she does not have four years of armor, and something breaks open very quietly behind my sternum and the tears come before I can close the door on them.

Just a few. Just one breath's worth.

I turn my face slightly away. Habit.

His hand comes up — slow, giving me every opportunity to step back — and he cups the side of my jaw the way you cup something that is both fragile and very important, and he turns my face back toward him. He doesn't say anything. He just holds my face in his hand and looks at me in the snow, steady and unhurried, and his thumb is very careful against my cheekbone.

I let him.

I stand in the blizzard with the fire going down behind us and the wind screaming off the ridgeline and casualties being triaged twenty meters to my left, and I stand in the circle of a stranger's warmth and I let him hold my face, and my wolf is pressing her whole self against the inside of my ribs like she wants him to feel her through the skin.

For the first time in four years, I don't tell her to stop.

"Kyler Castillo," he says. Quiet. Like he is giving me something.

I look at him.

My voice comes out steadier than I expect.

"Evelyn Wright."

His thumb pauses against my cheek. His wolf is very loud in his eyes.

"I know," he says.

And somehow — in all the ways that matter, in the ways my wolf has been screaming since the moment the scent hit me through the smoke — so do I.
