Chapter 1

The Northern Packs had been colder than usual, their Alpha's words even icier as they negotiated territory boundaries. I'd cut the diplomatic mission short, my wolf Luna growing increasingly agitated with each passing hour. Something was wrong—I could feel it through the mate bond, like a discordant note in what should have been a harmonious melody.

"Just a few more hours," I whispered to Luna as our car approached Silver Claw territory. The familiar pine scent of home should have calmed us, but instead, my wolf paced restlessly in my mind, her silver fur bristling with unease.

The pack house stood silent in the moonlight, most of our members already retired for the evening. I'd planned to surprise Ethan, maybe ease whatever tension had been building between us since Father's death. My hand unconsciously touched the crescent moon pendant at my throat—Dad's last gift to me. Three months. It had only been three months since the rogue attack that stole him from us.

My footsteps echoed softly on the marble floors as I made my way through the west wing. The private quarters I'd shared with Ethan for over a year beckoned ahead, but something made me slow my approach. A scent lingered in the air—vanilla and jasmine. Rebecca Mitchell.

My stomach clenched. Why would she be in our private wing at this hour?

Luna whimpered in my mind as I crept closer, my healing abilities allowing me to move with more stealth than most she-wolves. The door to our bedroom stood slightly ajar, warm lamplight spilling into the darkened hallway. I pressed myself against the wall, heart hammering so loud I feared they might hear it.

"—can feel him getting stronger every day," Rebecca's voice drifted out, sickeningly sweet. "Your son will be magnificent, Alpha."

My blood turned to ice. Son?

I peered through the crack in the door, and the sight that greeted me shattered something fundamental inside me. Ethan sat on our bed—our bed—with Rebecca perched beside him. His large hand rested tenderly on her visibly rounded belly, his thumb tracing gentle circles over the fabric of her dress. The same gesture he used to make on my stomach, back when we still had hope that the Moon Goddess would bless us with pups.

"He'll be everything the pack needs," Ethan murmured, his voice holding a warmth I hadn't heard in months. "Strong. Capable. Everything a true Alpha heir should be."

Rebecca leaned into him, her blonde hair cascading over his shoulder. "Unlike what she could have given you. Even before the accident, did you really think her weak bloodline would produce a worthy successor?"

The casual cruelty of her words made me bite my lip to keep from gasping. But it was Ethan's response that truly destroyed me.

He chuckled. Actually chuckled. "The Moon Goddess has interesting timing. If Marcus hadn't died saving me, I might have been stuck with a barren Luna forever. At least now I have options."

"Three months," Rebecca purred. "We've been so careful for three months. When will you tell her?"

Three months. Since right after Father's funeral. While I was drowning in grief, barely able to function, my mate had been—

I must have made a sound, because suddenly both their heads snapped toward the door. Without thinking, I pushed it open fully, standing in the doorway like a ghost of the Luna I used to be.

"Olivia." Ethan's voice held no surprise, only mild annoyance. He didn't even remove his hand from Rebecca's belly. "You're back early."

"Explain." The word came out steadier than I felt. Luna was howling in my mind, the sound of a wolf whose entire world had just imploded.

Ethan stood slowly, his six-foot-four frame imposing as always. But for the first time, I noticed how his brown eyes held no warmth when they looked at me. When had that changed? When had I become an inconvenience rather than his cherished mate?

"What's there to explain?" His eyes flashed Alpha red, the dominance in them pressing against my skin like a physical weight. "You can't give me what I need, Olivia. The pack needs an heir. Rebecca can provide that."

"We're mates," I whispered, hating how broken I sounded. "The Moon Goddess—"

"The Moon Goddess made a mistake." His words were ice-cold daggers. "Or perhaps she simply knew you'd become damaged goods. Either way, I need a son. A legacy. Something you'll never be able to give me."

The room spun. This couldn't be happening. This man who'd held me as I sobbed over Father's grave, who'd sworn to love me through everything—he was looking at me like I was nothing. Like our bond meant nothing.

Like I meant nothing.

Rebecca stood then, her hand possessively covering her belly. The smirk on her face told me everything I needed to know. This wasn't just about an heir.

This was about power. And I'd already lost.

Chapter 2

I couldn't sleep. How could I? The image of Ethan's hand on Rebecca's pregnant belly burned behind my eyelids every time I closed them. Luna whimpered restlessly in my mind, our shared pain a constant ache that no healing ability could mend.

As dawn broke, a sharp knock rattled my door—not our door anymore, but the guest room I'd retreated to after last night's revelation.

"The Alpha requests your presence in the Great Hall. Immediately." Delta Warren's voice was stiff, formal. News traveled fast.

I dressed mechanically, fingers trembling as I fastened my father's crescent moon pendant around my neck. Its familiar weight against my collarbone was the only comfort I had left.

"We'll get through this," I whispered to Luna, though neither of us believed it.

The Great Hall loomed before me, its massive wooden doors suddenly intimidating. I'd walked through them countless times as Luna of the Silver Claw Pack. Today, I entered as... what? A discarded mate? A barren she-wolf with no place?

The council members sat in a semi-circle, their expressions ranging from pity to poorly disguised contempt. Rebecca wasn't present—small mercies. Ethan stood at the center, tall and imposing in his ceremonial Alpha attire, his face a mask of cold determination.

"Olivia Bennett," he announced as I entered, using my maiden name already. "The council has been informed of my decision."

I lifted my chin, refusing to show weakness before these wolves who had once respected me. "And what decision is that, Alpha?"

The formal title tasted bitter on my tongue. Luna growled low in my mind.

Ethan unfolded an ancient parchment, his eyes glowing Alpha red as he began to read. "I, Ethan Crawford, Alpha of the Silver Claw Pack, reject you, Olivia Bennett, as my mate."

Each word was a physical blow. I felt our bond—already strained—begin to crack further.

"Our union has failed to produce the necessary heir for pack continuation. By the power vested in me as Alpha, I hereby dissolve our mating bond, effective upon the completion of the rejection ceremony at tonight's half-moon."

The council members avoided my gaze. Only Beta Mitchell—Rebecca's father—looked pleased, a smug smile playing at the corners of his mouth.

"Do you consent to the rejection ritual?" Ethan asked, his tone suggesting there was only one acceptable answer.

"And if I don't?" The words escaped before I could stop them.

A dangerous flash crossed Ethan's face. "Then you will be stripped of all titles and pack protections. You will leave Silver Claw territory by nightfall with nothing but the clothes on your back."

The threat hung in the air between us. I needed time. Guidance.

"I'll give my answer by noon," I said, turning on my heel before he could object.

I fled to the only place that felt safe—the pack healer's cottage at the edge of our territory. Miriam had been a friend to my mother before she passed, and she'd taught me much of what I knew about healing.

"I sensed you would come," she said, opening the door before I could knock. Her ancient eyes were sad as she ushered me inside. "The pack bonds are shifting. I felt it in my bones."

"He wants to reject me," I whispered, collapsing onto her worn sofa. "For her. For Rebecca."

Miriam's wrinkled hands clasped mine. "What does pack law say about this?"

"That's why I'm here. I need to know my options."

She sighed heavily, the sound of someone delivering bad news. "There are none, child. If you refuse the ritual, you lose everything—your status, your home, your protection. At least with a formal rejection, you retain your dignity and rights to seek another pack."

"Another pack?" The thought had never occurred to me. "Who would take in a rejected Luna?"

"You are more than your mating bond, Olivia. You are your father's daughter. A healer. A wolf with her own strength." She squeezed my hands. "But for now, you must consent. It is the only way forward."

As the half-moon rose that night, I stood in the sacred grove where Ethan and I had once pledged our eternal love. The pack gathered in a circle around us, silent witnesses to my humiliation. Rebecca stood at the front, her hand protectively cradling her swollen belly, triumph gleaming in her eyes.

Ethan approached me, his expression unreadable. "Kneel," he commanded, using his Alpha tone.

My knees buckled against my will. Luna howled in protest as I sank to the ground before him.

"I, Ethan Crawford, Alpha of the Silver Claw Pack, reject you, Olivia Bennett, as my mate before the Moon Goddess and this pack."

He bent down, his breath hot against my neck where his mating mark had resided for over a year. His teeth sank into the same spot, but instead of the pleasure of our first bonding, white-hot pain shot through me as he severed our connection.

I bit my lip until I tasted blood, refusing to cry out. As he pulled away, I felt something fundamental inside me tear loose—the mate bond shattering like glass.

In that moment of blinding pain, as my world collapsed around me, a strange voice brushed against my mind—deep, powerful, and entirely unfamiliar.

*Hold on, little wolf. This is not the end of your story.*

Chapter 3

The rejection ceremony left me hollow, a shell of the Luna I once was. As Ethan's teeth released my neck, the severed mate bond felt like a physical wound no healing ability could mend. I remained kneeling in the sacred grove, the half-moon's light casting long shadows across my face as pack members began to disperse, their whispers carrying on the night breeze.

*Hold on, little wolf. This is not the end of your story.*

The strange voice lingered in my mind, but I had no strength to question it. Luna had retreated deep within me, curled into a ball of grief and pain.

I finally stood on trembling legs, my hand instinctively reaching for the crescent moon pendant at my throat—Dad's last gift. What would he think of me now? Rejected. Discarded. Replaced.

"Luna—I mean, Olivia." Delta Warren approached cautiously, avoiding my eyes. "The Alpha requests you remove your Luna armband before returning to the pack house."

Of course he did. I glanced down at the silver band encircling my upper arm, the symbol of my position for over a year. With numb fingers, I unclasped it and handed it to Warren, who took it like it might burn him.

"Thank you for your... service to the pack," he muttered before hurrying away.

The walk back to the pack house stretched before me like a gauntlet. Wolves who had once bowed their heads in respect now averted their gazes or, worse, stared with naked pity. A few of Rebecca's friends didn't bother hiding their smirks.

"Good evening," I greeted a group of she-wolves I'd once considered friends.

They mumbled incoherent responses before scurrying away, as if rejection might be contagious. The corridor suddenly felt too narrow, the walls closing in as whispers followed me.

"Poor thing."

"Can't blame the Alpha, though. The pack needs an heir."

"Did you see Rebecca? Already three months along."

"Three months... right after her father died..."

I quickened my pace, desperate to escape their voices. The guest room—my room now—offered little comfort, but at least there I could break in private.

As night deepened, I sat by the window, watching the half-moon climb higher. The same moon that had witnessed my mating ceremony, my father's funeral, and now my rejection. What cruel games the Moon Goddess played with mortal wolves.

"What do we do now?" I whispered to Luna, but my wolf remained silent, her pain too deep for words.

Exhaustion finally claimed me. I collapsed onto the unfamiliar bed, not bothering to change out of my ceremonial dress. The weight of everything—Ethan's betrayal, Rebecca's triumph, the pack's abandonment—crushed down on me until breathing became an effort.

I was drifting in that hazy space between wakefulness and sleep when it happened. A presence brushed against my mind—powerful, ancient, and distinctly male.

*Olivia Bennett.*

I bolted upright, heart racing. This wasn't Ethan's mind-link. This was something else entirely.

*Who are you?* I projected back, Luna stirring slightly at the intrusion.

*Alexander Morgan, Lycan Prince of the Western Territories.*

The name sent a jolt through me. Alexander Morgan—my father's ally. A royal Lycan whose power dwarfed that of ordinary Alphas. What could he possibly want with me?

*I offer you sanctuary, Olivia. What Ethan has done—it goes beyond the rejection.*

His mind-voice carried an urgency that cut through my fog of despair.

*What do you mean?* I asked, suddenly alert.

*Your father's position as Beta—Ethan plans to erase it from pack history. The treaties Marcus helped forge, his contributions to Silver Claw... all of it will disappear by morning. The rejection was just the beginning.*

A cold fury began to replace my numbness. My father had given everything to this pack—including his life. And now Ethan would erase him like he never existed?

*Why would you help me?* I questioned, suspicion threading through my thoughts. *What do you gain?*

A pause, heavy with unspoken meaning.

*I owed Marcus my life long before he gave it for another. And I keep my debts.*

Something in his tone made Luna stir more forcefully, her silver fur bristling with interest for the first time since the rejection.

*Come to the eastern border before dawn,* Alexander continued. *My Beta will escort you to safety. Bring only what matters most—Ethan's wolves will be watching.*

The connection began to fade, but not before one final thought reached me:

*You are more than a rejected mate, Olivia Bennett. You are your father's daughter. And that makes you dangerous.*

As his presence withdrew from my mind, I sat frozen in the darkness, torn between fear and a flicker of something I hadn't felt since discovering Ethan's betrayal.

Hope.
