After I Left Them, I Became the Woman They Could Never Reach Chapter 1

Five years.

That was how long it took me to forget the smell of my father's cologne.

It came back the second the VIP doors slid open.

"Elena."

Victor Ashford stood in the middle of the arrivals hall, gray suit, silver hair, the same face he wore at board meetings when someone lost him money. Beside him was my older brother, Nathan. And a step behind them both, hands in his pockets like he owned the airport, was Dominic Kessler.

The man I almost married.

My fingers tightened around my daughter's small hand.

"Father," I said.

"Don't." Victor's voice cut low and flat. "You don't get to call me that after what you did. I want to know one thing. How do you have the nerve to come back?"

Nathan folded his arms. "Vanessa cried for weeks after you left. Did you know that? Weeks."

I almost smiled. Of course she did.

Dominic finally stepped forward. He looked me over slowly, from my coat to my shoes, like he was checking a returned package for damage.

"Five years, Elena." He shook his head. "You made your point. You threw your little tantrum. Ran off, made everyone worry." His mouth curved. "So. Are you ready to apologize now?"

There it was.

The same tone he used the night of our engagement party. The night Vanessa Reed, my stepsister, stood in the middle of the ballroom with tears on her perfect cheeks and told two hundred guests that I'd been jealous of her. That I'd leaked numbers from the Harrow deal to sink the family's contract. That I'd done it just to hurt her.

None of it was true.

My father didn't even ask me.

"Let it go, Elena," he'd said. "She's fragile. Be the bigger person."

Nathan had shaken his head at me like I was a stranger. "Why can't you ever just think about how she feels?"

And Dominic, my fiancé, had walked straight past me. He'd wrapped his arm around Vanessa and led her off the floor while everyone stared at me standing alone under the chandelier.

I took off his ring that night. Set it on the champagne table. Walked out.

They all laughed. I heard Nathan say it on my way to the door.

"She'll be back in a week. Begging."

I didn't argue with Dominic now. I didn't say a word to him at all.

I crouched down instead and brushed the hair out of my daughter's eyes.

"Are you tired, baby?"

Chloe yawned so wide her whole face scrunched. She was four, all dark curls and pink sneakers, her stuffed rabbit tucked under one arm.

"A little." She tugged my sleeve. "Mommy, when is Daddy coming to get us?"

Silence hit the three of them like a dropped glass.

I watched it happen. Nathan's arms came uncrossed. My father's chin jerked back half an inch. And Dominic—

Dominic went completely still.

"What did she say?"

I stood up, slow. "You heard her."

"Daddy?" He stared at Chloe like she was a math problem he couldn't solve. Then at me. "Whose kid is that, Elena?"

"Mine."

"Don't play games with me." His voice climbed. A woman rolling a suitcase glanced over. "Who's the father?"

"My husband."

I said it the way you'd mention the weather.

Dominic laughed. One short, ugly bark. "Your husband. Right." He dragged a hand down his face. "You've been gone five years and you expect me to believe some guy just picked you up off the street? You had nothing when you left. No money. No name. You walked out with one suitcase."

"I remember," I said. "I packed it."

Nathan stepped in, lowering his voice like he was talking a jumper off a ledge. "Elena, come on. If you're in some kind of trouble—if this guy is using you—you can tell us. Dad will handle it."

That one actually made me laugh.

Nathan blinked. He didn't know what to do with that sound.

"Handle it," I repeated. "The way he handled the Harrow deal? The way he handled Vanessa's lie?"

"It wasn't a lie." Victor's jaw set hard. "The leak came from your office."

"The leak came from my office the week Vanessa borrowed my key card." I tilted my head. "But you never checked. Did you?"

For the first time, my father didn't have an answer ready.

Dominic grabbed my wrist.

"We're not done."

Chloe shrank against my leg. Her rabbit hit the floor.

I looked down at his hand on my arm. Then up at his face. I didn't pull away. I just waited.

"Take your hand off me, Dominic," I said quietly. "Before my daughter sees what kind of man you are."

His grip loosened. Not because of me. Because of the engine outside.

A black car rolled up to the curb beyond the glass doors. Long, sleek, tinted so dark it swallowed the light. Two men in dark suits climbed out of the front first and took positions by the doors like it was routine.

Then the back door opened.

The man who stepped out didn't hurry. He didn't need to. He was tall, broad through the shoulders, his black coat open over a charcoal suit. People in the hall moved out of his path without seeming to know why.

Chloe saw him first.

"Daddy!"

She tore away from me and ran, curls bouncing, sneakers squeaking on the tile.

He dropped to one knee and caught her mid-leap. Swung her up against his chest. She wrapped both arms around his neck and squeezed.

"There's my girl." His voice was low, warm, a little rough. "Did you take care of Mommy on the plane?"

"I did! I shared my crackers."

"That's very generous." He kissed the top of her head. "Did you lose something?"

Chloe gasped and twisted around. "Mr. Hops!"

He walked toward us, Chloe on his hip, and bent to pick the rabbit up off the floor. Right at Dominic's feet.

He straightened. Handed the rabbit to our daughter.

Then he lifted his eyes.

The warmth was gone. Not faded. Gone. What looked back at Dominic, at Nathan, at my father, was something cold and patient, like a man reading the last line of a contract before he signed it.

His gaze dropped to Dominic's hand, still hovering near my arm.

Dominic pulled it back.

"Sweetheart," my husband said to me, never taking his eyes off the three of them. "Are these the people you told me about?"

"Yes."

He nodded once. Calm. Almost polite.

"Good," he said. "I've been wanting to meet them."

Nathan's face had gone pale. He was staring at the car. At the security. At the man. And I watched recognition crawl across my brother's face like a slow chill.

"Dad," Nathan whispered. "Dad, do you know who that is?"

Victor didn't answer.

He didn't have to.

His hands had started to shake.
