Winter’s Rejected Gift Chapter 1

The golden chandeliers cast warm light across the grand ballroom, their crystal tears catching the flickering flames like captured stars. I smoothed my emerald silk gown one final time, my fingers trembling slightly as they brushed over the barely noticeable curve of my belly. Tonight was the night. Tonight, I would tell Ryker about our child.

The Winter Solstice Ball was always the most magnificent event of the year, but this one felt different. Electric. The air hummed with anticipation, though I couldn't shake the feeling that something had shifted in the pack's dynamics. Conversations seemed to halt when I passed, and knowing glances were exchanged behind gloved hands.

I spotted Ryker across the room, his commanding presence drawing every eye. Even in formal attire, he radiated the raw power that made him our Alpha. His dark hair was perfectly styled, his broad shoulders filling out his midnight blue jacket with an elegance that made my heart flutter. When our eyes met across the crowded ballroom, I expected to see the warmth that had been there just days ago when we'd shared stolen moments in his study.

Instead, his gaze was cold. Distant.

A chill ran down my spine, but I pushed the feeling away. Perhaps he was simply focused on his duties as Alpha. The Winter Solstice was an important night for political alliances and pack business.

I made my way through the crowd, nodding politely to the various pack members and visiting dignitaries. The scent of pine and cinnamon filled the air, mixed with expensive perfumes and the underlying musk of so many wolves in one space. My heightened senses, sharpened by pregnancy, picked up every nuance.

"Elara." Beta Marcus appeared at my elbow, his usually jovial expression strained. "You look beautiful tonight."

"Thank you, Marcus." I studied his face, noting the tension around his eyes. "Is everything alright?"

He opened his mouth as if to speak, then seemed to think better of it. "Enjoy the evening," he said instead, but his tone carried a warning I couldn't decipher.

Before I could press him further, the orchestra fell silent. All conversations ceased as Ryker stepped onto the raised platform at the front of the ballroom. The sight of him there, so powerful and commanding, made my pulse quicken. Soon, everyone would know about our child. Our future.

"My fellow wolves," Ryker's voice carried easily across the silent room, rich and authoritative. "Tonight, we celebrate not only the longest night of the year, but also a new dawn for our pack."

Murmurs of interest rippled through the crowd. I found myself holding my breath, wondering if somehow he already knew about the pregnancy. Perhaps he'd sensed the change in my scent.

"It is my honor to announce," Ryker continued, his gaze sweeping across the room but never landing on me, "my engagement to Lady Victoria Ashworth of the Northern Territories."

The words hit me like a physical blow. The ballroom seemed to tilt, and I gripped the back of a nearby chair to steady myself. Engagement? But we were mates. We had been together for months, sharing not just our bodies but our dreams, our fears, our—

A elegant woman in a stunning silver gown glided up the steps to join Ryker on the platform. Lady Victoria Ashworth. I recognized her now from the political briefings – a wealthy Beta from a powerful family, known for her business acumen and extensive land holdings. She was beautiful in a cold, classical way, with platinum blonde hair and sharp blue eyes.

Ryker took her hand, lifting it to his lips in a gesture that should have been mine. The crowd erupted in polite applause, but the sound felt muffled, as if I were underwater.

"This union will strengthen our pack's position and secure our future prosperity," Ryker announced, his arm now around Victoria's waist.

I couldn't breathe. The room was spinning, and the scent of pine had become overwhelming, cloying. This had to be some mistake, some political theater that he would explain later. We were mates. We had the bond. I was carrying his child.

As if sensing my distress, Ryker's eyes finally found mine across the room. For a moment, I saw something flicker there – regret? Pain? But then his expression hardened into something I'd never seen before. Something cruel.

The Alpha power hit me like a tsunami.

It wasn't the gentle dominance he'd used during our intimate moments, or even the firm authority he wielded during pack meetings. This was raw, brutal force designed to break rather than guide. The invisible chains of our mate bond, which had felt like silk threads binding our souls together, suddenly became barbed wire.

I gasped, doubling over as pain lanced through my chest. The bond that had been our connection, our promise of forever, was being severed. Not naturally, not through mutual agreement, but torn apart by sheer Alpha will.

"No," I whispered, but the word was lost in the celebration around me.

The pain intensified, spreading from my heart through every nerve in my body. It felt like being turned inside out, like having my soul flayed. I could taste copper in my mouth, feel warmth spreading across my lips.

Blood.

I was vomiting blood onto the pristine marble floor, my emerald gown staining crimson. Gasps and screams erupted from the nearby guests as they scrambled away from me, but I could barely hear them over the roaring in my ears.

Through my blurred vision, I could see Ryker watching from the platform. His face was a mask of cold indifference, showing no trace of the man who had whispered sweet promises in my ear just nights ago. Lady Victoria looked down at me with obvious disgust, as if I were something unpleasant she'd stepped in.

The mate bond snapped completely.

The absence was immediate and devastating. Where once there had been warmth, connection, love, now there was only a gaping void. I felt hollow, as if someone had reached into my chest and carved out my heart.

But worse than the emotional devastation was the physical agony. My body, already stressed by early pregnancy, convulsed with the trauma of the severed bond. I could feel something wrong, something shifting inside me that made my blood run cold.

The baby.

"Help her," someone called out, but the voice seemed to come from very far away.

I looked up one final time at the man I had loved, the father of the child I might now be losing, and saw nothing in his eyes but the cold calculation of an Alpha who had made his choice.

The golden chandelier light began to fade as darkness crept in from the edges of my vision, and the last thing I heard was the continued applause for the happy couple above.
